Luxemburg-Casco suffers first loss of season

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans boys’ basketball team saw a highly contested conference loss to the Wrightstown Tigers on Tuesday afternoon, 81-71.

The undefeated Spartans saw an early 7-0 lead in the first half to a Tigers team that turned the ball over five times in the first nine minutes. LC extended their lead by 14 points until the Tigers went on a 19-0 scoring run for six minutes straight. Ryan Robillard ended the Spartans scoring drought by adding eight straight points in the last two minutes of first half play to lead his squad ahead of the Tigers, 41-34.

The Spartans continued their scoring run into the second half with 10 consecutive points after it was halted by a Tigers lay-up. Peyton Mrotek tallied five straight points in the second half to give the Spartans a 10-point lead three minutes in. 64-61 is where the score stood with 5:20 left to play until the Tigers’ Jack Van Zeeland nailed three triples in a row to contribute in the 11-0 Wrightstown scoring run. The Spartans trailed 75-71 with 1:21 left to play and strategized for the foul percentage game but that would not prevail with Wrightstown’s Van Zeeland at the line who sank all four of his free throws to end the game, 81-71. The Spartans Robillard finished with 29 points while Logan Doell added 23 points in their loss. The Tigers’ Van Zeeland led the way for all scorers with 37 points. The Spartans fall to 6-1 in North Eastern Conference play and will rest until they face Little Chute at home on January 4th at 7pm.

Spartan girls' basketball stumble at home

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans girls’ basketball team fell to the Valders Vikings on Tuesday evening, 55-49.

The Vikings marked the first points of the game and continued the early scoring momentum against the Spartans to go up 15-8 eight minutes into play. LC stopped the bleeding with a timeout minutes before the first half closed to propel two consecutive Taylor Thiry layups to bring the game within seven points. Valders controlled the last minute of first half play to lead by 10 points, 27-17.

Second half play saw the Spartans’ Thiry add the first points which were followed by an Alexandria Wech layup seconds later to bring the game within two possessions. The Vikings Kate Wagner did not slow down her offensive play by adding two baskets in a row to pace the lead at seven points. Thiry battled back for her Spartans with three consecutive makes to drain what was a 13 point Valders lead to six points. With three minutes left of play, LC’s Magdeline Hanman gathered a shooting foul opportunity in which she converted one of three free-throw shots. Valders’ Wagner sank a pair of crucial free throws down the stretch to steal a road win for her squad over the Spartans, 55-49.The Spartans (5-3) will continue their season on January 5th for a home game against Freedom at 7pm.

Spartans drop dual to Pirates

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans wrestling team came up just short in its Tuesday morning dual meet against Division 1 power Bay Port, losing 40-30.

After the Spartans received forfeits at 160 pounds and 170 pounds, the Pirates drew first blood with three straight victories including Drake Anderson's pin of Joey Chervenka at 195 pounds. The Spartans would start their own winning streak after Travis LeGrave got six on the board due to an injury default to Connor Corrigan. Issac Jerabek (106 lbs) and Easton Worachek (113 lbs) picked up pins to give the Spartans a 30-12 advantage.

The Spartans would not win another match as Nicholas Schomaker beat Jake Jandrin 7-1 to earn the decision. Carter Kallies got a 12-0 major decision over Tyler Derenne at 132 pounds before a double forfeit at 138 pounds. Tristin Thiry dropped a close 3-1 decision to Bay Port's Ayden Bruckner at 145 pounds before Jacob Ward closed out the dual with a pin of the Spartans' Hunter Joniaux at 152 pounds.

L-C strides for perfection

The Luxemburg-Casco (3-0) wrestling team will hit the mat on Tuesday morning for a non-conference dual against the Bay Port Pirates.

L-C has seen victories in all three of their duals this season, most recently coming off a dual win over the Division III defending state champion Coleman Cougars last Tuesday night. Easton Worachek will look to earn a second straight major decision (though I'd argue a pin would be swell too) on Tuesday while Issac Blohowiak will look to continue his winning streak as well. Bay Port will head into this matchup 1-1 on the season, most recently coming off a conference win over Kimberly, 38-28. The first whistle will take place at 9:30am in the Luxemburg-Casco gymnasium.

L-C, Wrightstown battle for NEC bragging rights

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans (6-0) boys’ basketball team tips-off another conference matchup at home against the Wrightstown Tigers (5-2) on Tuesday night.

The Spartans are coming off back-to-back 30+ point victories against two conference opponents, one of the games tallied a triple figure score as well. Wrightstown is riding a four-game win streak in conference play and has not forgotten about the last time they played LC back in January of 2020 in which they captured a 65-49 win. This battle will tip-off at 3:30pm.

Easton Worachek started things off for the Spartans with a 13-0 major decision over the Cougars' Raymond LeMieux. The Cougars would rattle off two straight pins before Max Ronsman earned a second-period pin at 132 pounds and Luke Shefchik won his match at 138 pounds by a 9-5 decision over Wil Bieber.  The two teams traded pins for eight straight matches with Hunter Joniaux (152 lb, 3:31), Isaac Blohowiak (160, 1:01), Kyle Kroll (220, :44), and Travis LeGrave (285, 1:44) coming out on the winning side. With the Spartans hanging onto the dual by a single point, Issac Jerabek won in an active match at 106 pounds, getting the 9-5 decision over Cameron Kimmell.

The Spartans will wrestle next Tuesday morning at home against Bay Port with the first whistle taking place at 9:30 a.m.

Spartans crush Panthers on WBDK, Robillard hits 1,000 on Senior Night

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartan boys’ basketball team celebrated a memorable Senior Night on Friday in Luxemburg blowing out the Oconto Falls Panthers 112-49 in a North Eastern Conference game.  Senior Ryan Robillard scored his 1,000th point in his Spartan career on a three-pointer from the top of the key with 3:32 left in the first half.  Robillard finished with a game-high 23, needing 21 points to reach the milestone.

The Spartans jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead over Oconto Falls in the first few minutes only to see the Panthers hit two three-pointers to cut the lead to four.  That was as close as Oconto Falls would get as the Spartans steamrolled Panthers by forcing numerous turnovers with a stifling 1-3-1 half-court trap.

With Robillard becoming the third player to score 1,000 points in a boys basketball career, the Spartans coasted into halftime with a 63-20 lead.

The Spartans substituted freely in the second half and kept the pressure defense going as junior Evan Dahlke had a career night scoring 19 points including six three-pointers with five of those coming in the second half.

All 11 Spartan players scored with five of them scoring in double figures, including Logan Doell who finished with 21.  The four seniors, Garret Zuleger, Blake Yagodinski, Jonas Otradovec, and Robillard were honored after the game with a brief ceremony.

Luxemburg-Casco (5-0) will now host Waupaca Tuesday night before the holiday break.   Matt Piesler and Paul Schmitt will have the call starting at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame show and tip-off set for 7:15 p.m. on 96.7FM WBDK.  The game audio can also be streamed on NEW Radio Sports Network.

Luxemburg-Casco finds a way in OT

Luxemburg-Casco Spartans girls’ basketball second-year head coach Taylor Schmidt led her team to their fourth win of the season over the Oconto Falls Panthers, 47-46. This fourth victory signified Schmidt’s win total in the 2019-20 campaign. The Panthers ended the first half up one point over the Spartans, 21-20. The Spartans went on an 8-0 scoring in the second half to take the lead 37-32. The Panthers did not score a bucket for over 5 minutes midway through the second half, that was due to an aggressive Spartans defense. The Panthers went on a 7-0 scoring run of their own to tie the game up, 39-39 with 43 seconds left to play in the second half, which would prevail for an overtime matchup.

The Spartans won the coin toss to receive first dibs to start overtime play and that went over well for the Spartans Taylor Thiry (17 points) who completed a triple point play to up the Spartans 42-39. LC’s Lauren Adams sank a pair of crucial free throws to extend the lead, 44-41. The Panthers punched right back with a basket of their own to make it a one-point game, 44-43. LC gathered their composure and finished strong with another five points from Thiry during overtime play, she led the team with 19 points total.
