Luxemburg-Casco suffers first loss of season

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans boys’ basketball team saw a highly contested conference loss to the Wrightstown Tigers on Tuesday afternoon, 81-71.

The undefeated Spartans saw an early 7-0 lead in the first half to a Tigers team that turned the ball over five times in the first nine minutes. LC extended their lead by 14 points until the Tigers went on a 19-0 scoring run for six minutes straight. Ryan Robillard ended the Spartans scoring drought by adding eight straight points in the last two minutes of first half play to lead his squad ahead of the Tigers, 41-34.

The Spartans continued their scoring run into the second half with 10 consecutive points after it was halted by a Tigers lay-up. Peyton Mrotek tallied five straight points in the second half to give the Spartans a 10-point lead three minutes in. 64-61 is where the score stood with 5:20 left to play until the Tigers’ Jack Van Zeeland nailed three triples in a row to contribute in the 11-0 Wrightstown scoring run. The Spartans trailed 75-71 with 1:21 left to play and strategized for the foul percentage game but that would not prevail with Wrightstown’s Van Zeeland at the line who sank all four of his free throws to end the game, 81-71. The Spartans Robillard finished with 29 points while Logan Doell added 23 points in their loss. The Tigers’ Van Zeeland led the way for all scorers with 37 points. The Spartans fall to 6-1 in North Eastern Conference play and will rest until they face Little Chute at home on January 4th at 7pm.
