Explosive second half leads Spartans' boys to win

Traveling to Waupaca, Luxemburg-Casco got a slow start offensively and the Comets took an eight point lead into the break.

The Spartans half-time speech got them rolling and they started converting opportunites that they failed to in the first half, outscoring the Comets 36-23 in the second half on their way to a 54-49 win.

L-C was projected to win the game from the beginning, but stats don't always tell the full story. Waupaca came ready to play and with it taking a while to get the offense in system, the Spartans had their work cutout for themselves.

The win gives Luxemburg-Casco a double-digit victory season at 10-7 and they will defend home court and look to win their fifth straight game against Marinette Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Spartans girls extinguish Comets

The Luxemburg-Casco girls basketball team throttled their NEC opponent, Waupaca, Friday night, beating them 56-33.

The Spartans' defense shone brightest during the contest, allowing less than 20 points in each half. Meanwhile, the Spartans' offense, anchored by Sienna Blohowiak, Alayna Deprez, and Chloe Host were efficient inside the arc. Host led the way with 13 points while Deprez added 12 points and Blohowiak chipped in 10 points in the win.

Spartans edged by Cougars on the mat

A pair of forfeits proved to be the difference in Luxemburg-Casco's 36-31 loss to D2 #1 Coleman on Thursday night.

The Spartans won seven of the contested matches, including a stretch of four in the middleweights where Joseph Jeanquart and Linken Bastien registered technical falls and Carson Neubert pinned his opponent. Luxemburg-Casco, Coleman meet for battle of state powers

Two of the state's best teams meet in Luxemburg on Thursday night when Luxemburg-Casco welcomes Coleman.

The dual marks a departure from conference duals for the Spartans, which beat Marinette 63-16 and Oconto Falls 56-19 last week in Oconto Falls. Coy Anderson (106), Joseph Jeanquart (138), Carson Neubert (144), Linken Bastien (150), Mason Boulanger (157), Logan Ellwanger (175), Calvin Henderson (190), Zaender Schoenebeck (215), and AJ Delebreau (285) went 2-0 on the evening.

State wrestling websites have the Spartans ranked fifth in Division 1 and Coleman as the top-ranked squad in Division 2. Both teams have bumped up a division in recent years due to the WIAA's Performance Factor guidelines. Sixteen ranked wrestlers will duke it on Thursday, making the dual extra special to head coach Chas Treml.

The first matches begin at 6:30 p.m. You can listen to the latest edition of the Kewaunee County Wrestling Podcast brought to you by Total Dairy Service here.

Spartans crush Clippers on 104.1 WRLU

Some nights, everything just goes your way, and Monday night was one of those nights for Luxemburg-Casco, as it cruised to a 74-30 win over Sturgeon Bay on 104.1 WRLU.

After trading baskets early in the contest, a 16-0 run by the Spartans through the middle of the first half separated the two teams. Luxemburg-Casco forced turnovers and misses on the defensive end and took advantage of its opportunities in transition. The run finally ended when Vincent Laughlin earned and converted an and-one opportunity, making the score 23-9. That would be as close as Sturgeon Bay would get the rest of the way, as the Spartans finished the half on another run, outpacing the Clippers 16-3 over the remainder of the period to take a 39-12 lead into the locker room.

The second half started a bit slower for both teams, as it took a few minutes for each side to hit its first field goal. But once again for Luxemburg-Casco, once the lid was off the basket, it stayed off. Much like the first half, the recipe for success came from forcing Clippers turnovers and scoring in transition. With the game firmly in hand, coach Jandrain was able to go deeper into his bench and keep the momentum going. Every Spartan who suited up got into the game and scored, as Luxemburg-Casco cruised to the final score of 74-30.

As mentioned, every dressed Spartan scored, but 14 points from Ethan Ropson and 13 from Mason Trimberger set the pace for LC. Alex Biden and Siggy Hansen each scored five to lead the Clippers in defeat.

Sturgeon Bay will be back in action Tuesday, traveling around the bay to Peshtigo for a Packerland Conference game, while Luxemburg-Casco resumes North Eastern Conference play with a road trip to Waupaca on Friday.

Before that game, be sure to check out the Luxemburg-Casco Winter Sports Pep Rally, hosted by Tim Kowols and Eric Fischer, on Tuesday night from the Rendezvous of Luxemburg at 6 p.m. The event will air on the NEW Sports Network Facebook page.

Mustangs girls stampede past Spartans

Freshman Lauren Vosters' early hot shooting doomed Luxemburg-Casco as they lost to Little Chute 54-37 on the road Monday night.

Vosters scored 13 of her game-high 22 points in the first half, knocking down a pair of the threes as the Mustangs jumped out to a 31-18 halftime lead. The Spartans knocked a trio of threes after the break and tightened up defensively to keep the Mustangs closer, but were still outscored 23-19 in the second half.

Brianna Bray scored 13 points in the Spartans' defeat while Alana Mrotek and Sienna Blohowiak each tallied six points. Hattie Grishaber complemented Vosters' performance with 16 points in the Mustangs' win.

The Spartans will be at Tuesday's Winter Sports Pep Rally at the Rendezvous of Luxemburg beginning at 6 p.m. with the show being broadcast live on the NEW Radio Sports Network Facebook page. The team's next game is Friday at home against Waupaca at 7 p.m.

Spartans host Clippers on 104.1 WRLU

Sturgeon Bay will travel south tonight for a nonconference battle against Luxemburg Casco, and it’ll be on the air on 104.1 WRLU.

The Spartans are coming off back to back wins, having taken down Two Rivers and Little Chute last week. In the win against the Mustangs, Bryce Piesler starred, tallying a game high 25 points, including the game winning 3, as the Spartans swept the “Battle of the LCs”.

On the flip side, Sturgeon Bay will come into Monday’s game having dropped its last two games, most recently a 50-44 loss to NEW Lutheran early last week.  The Clippers’ leading scorer, Ben Ash, totaled 19 points in the effort.

Eric Fischer will have the coverage, with the pregame show starting at 6:45 and tipoff slated for 7:00 pm.

Luxemburg boy included Brewers spring training experience

Eleven-year-old Lucas Connor of Luxemburg is heading to Maryvale this spring as a guest of a local hospital and the Milwaukee Brewers.

Connor is joining Marinette teen Reece Walters and Ixonia teen Andersen Kerls as Aurora Health Care All-Stars. According to WLUK, Connor suffered from lymphoblastic lymphoma before undergoing two years of chemotherapy treatments, including oral, spinal, leg and belly treatments. While he is still undergoing chemotherapy treatments, he is essentially cancer-free after a softball-sized tumor forced him to lose the ability to walk, stay in a hospital for 35 days, and suffer from organ damage.

Along with their families, Connor, Walters, and Kerls will join the Brewers for  an all-expenses-paid VIP experience at Brewers spring training next month in Phoenix, Arizona.

Connor will not be the only newbie in Maryvale after the Brewers finalized a trade with the New York Mets that sent ace pitcher Freddy Peralta and bullpen arm Tobias Meyers for star prospects right-hander Brandon Sproat and utility player Jett Williams.

Spartan Boys' Get Big Road Win

Luxemburg-Casco boys went to Two Rivers for a big matchup Tuesday. For the Spartans, it's a pivotal point of a season that has had bright moments, but there is no time to waste anymore.

L-C gets back to 7-7 with the 63-51 win in a game where neither team seemed to have full control of the game, although the Spartans controlled the lead often.

The Spartans snap a two-game losing streak with Little Chute next up on Thursday. It will be more of a test, but Luxemburg-Casco is looking to get back on the right side of a .500 record.

Monster First Half Leads Spartans to Victory

Luxemburg-Casco put up 52 points in the first half against Clintonville Tuesday on their way to a commanding 81-32 win.

The Spartans nailed 12 three's in the win including four from Bray and another three from Alana Mrotek.

Spartan pride runs through Bastien family

For wrestlers Josiah and Linken Bastien, wearing the colors of Luxemburg-Casco is a birthright.

The pair are the latest of the Bastien boys to battle in the school's wrestling room. Last year, brother Blakelee completed a high school career that included placing in the top six three times in the WIAA Individual State Tournament and two team state championships. Their oldest brother, Antonio Bastien, is also a part of the program's successful lore. Josiah and Linken say they have been able to take away a lot from each other, especially since they have always been pretty close in weight.

The Bastien boys are not the only ones in the house to represent the Spartans on the biggest of stages. Their mother was a part of some of the school's state championship runs in girls' basketball. Josiah and Linken both said that mom's advice has come in handy too.

The Spartans are back in action this Thursday with a triangular meet against Oconto Falls and Marinette.

Spartans fall to Blue Jays on the road

For Luxemburg-Casco girls basketball, it was their second long distance road game in three days and this time went in favor of the host team, 47-38. The Spartans have had bright moments on the season and put up a strong fight in almost every matchup, but can't quite get consistent offensive firepower needed to win a high volume of games. L-C is 2-3 in 2026 and hovering around the .500 mark on the season (7-8) with a home game in their sights against a struggling Clintonville team (3-10). The Spartans tip off Tuesday at 7 p.m. looking to get back to an even record.

Spartans' boys downed by Oconto Falls Friday night

One night after the Spartans' girls traveled to face Oconto Falls and won, the boys hosted them, but again the outcome went in favor of the visitors.

Oconto Falls held L-C below 50 points for the first time this season and took the victory 60-46.

Spartans pounce on Panthers on 104.1 WRLU

Brianna Bray’s bookend scoring helped Luxemburg Casco power past Oconto Falls on Thursday night, winning 44-31, as heard on 104.1 WRLU.

Bray got to work early, splashing a pair of three pointers, as the Spartans built an early lead on the Panthers.  LC’s defensive efforts also forced Oconto Falls into numerous turnovers that helped the Spartans build the lead even further.  Karsyn Walczyk and Chloe Host each added 6 points in the half, combined with shutting out Panthers leading scorer Rylie Shallow, guiding the Spartans to a 30-14 halftime lead.

Both teams started the second half slowly, as the defenses dug in and limited scoring opportunities. Host broke the seal for the Spartans, though points were a premium in the half. Shallow also got going, scoring 9 in the half, as Oconto Falls fought back into the contest.  Unfortunately for the home team, they would get too aggressive, and sent the Spartans to the line often in the late going of the game.  Bray, who was held scoreless through most of the second half, stepped up, and hit 5 free throws to help seal the game for Luxemburg Casco.  Her 13 points led all scorers, aided by 9 points from Host, and 8 from Alana Mrotek.  Ella Jahnke led the Panthers with 12 points.

The Spartans will travel to Menasha on Saturday for a 1pm tip time in their next contest.

No. 1 Irish stays perfect as they down Spartans

Freedom came into Luxemburg Friday night as the number one team in the state and continued their perfect start to the season behind the teams leader, Donvoan Davis.

The final, 74-56, felt closer than it was for the Spartans as they had a strong offensive stretch, but couldn't keep up to the power of Freedom's offense behind Davis.

A big run in the first half took control of the game for the Irish as a game that L-C trailed 6-5 quickly turned into a 19-point deficit nearing the halfway point of the first frame.

Luxemburg-Casco has ridden out streaks on the season leaving them at 5-5 heading into a contest at Clintonville January 13 at 7 p.m.

Freedom steals win from L-C in final minutes

After various lead changes throughout the game, Freedom took the win away from Luxemburg-Casco in the games final minutes.

Tied at 51, Freedom's Callie Anderson hit a three to give the Irish a 54-51 lead that they wouldn't give up for the last 2:34. L-C had an opportunity to tie up the game multiple times, but a late turnover on a pass to a cutting Spartan proved to be just enough to push the game in favor of Freedom.

Starters Brianna Bray, Alana Mrotek and Alayna Deprez all finished with double-digits in the loss and Bray led the Spartans with 13.

Luxemburg-Casco has been up-and-down all season and the close loss is just a small setback as they sit at 6-7 continuing the back half of their schedule with a trip to Oconto Falls January 15 for 7 p.m.

The Luxemburg-Casco wrestling team is hitting the road this Thursday as they are traveling to Wrightstown for a triangular meet. The first round of the triangular will see Denmark facing Wrightstown, round two will have the Spartans taking on Denmark, and the 3rd round has the Spartans facing Wrightstown. The Spartans' last time hitting the mat saw them in DeKalb, Illinois, and the Spartans won their first dual against Lockport (Twp) 35-30 before falling 40-30 to Frankfort (Lincoln-Way East), and Minooka defeated Luxemburg-Casco 39-36. Carson Neubert, Joseph Jeanquart, Josiah Bastien, and Logan Ellwanger went undefeated on the day.
    Wrestling begins at 5:00 PM

Spartans hand Wrightstown first conference loss

A big first half for the girls of Luxemburg-Casco put them ahead of Wrightstown 31-23, but the Tigers came storming back making it closer yet ultimately leading to a 6-point victory for the Spartans, 51-45.

Brianna Brey's 21 points were vital in the big first half and leading L-C to victory. She cashed in four three-pointers and went a perfect 5-of-5 from the free throw line on the night.

Wrightstown's Madelyn DeCleene challenge the Spartans defense throughout the night finishing with 17, but it wasn't enough to defeat L-C.

Luxemburg-Casco wins their fifth game on the season (5-6) and another in conference (4-1) to slide ahead one slot. They will face Freedom later this week with a 7 p.m. Friday tip off on Jan. 9.

Spartans fall in 2OT against Wrightstown on 104.1 WRLU

36 minutes wasn’t enough for Luxemburg Casco and Wrightstown, as the two teams battled through regulation, an overtime period, and then a second overtime before a winner was crowned. Ultimately though, it was the Tigers who emerged victorious, defending home court for a 63-60 thriller as heard on 104.1 WRLU.

The Spartans got out to an early advantage, grabbing a 5-0 lead before Wrightstown got on the board. The two squads traded baskets throughout the first half, with Luxemburg Casco building onto an early advantage as Eli Derenne connected on a pair of threes to set the pace. The Spartans defense was also able to limit leading Wrightstown scorer Alden Cyra, holding him scoreless in the first half. After the opening stanza was complete, it was the Spartans in front, 29-23, to head into the locker room.

Wrightstown tightened things up in the early part of the second half, forcing Spartans turnovers as they inched back into the game. Luxemburg Casco rallied though, with Bryce Piesler hitting a pair of threes to help build the lead back for the Spartans. LC would build the advantage to as high as 11 points, and would hold that lead for much of the half. In the closing minutes, things tightened up, and Wrightstown forced some timely turnovers to close the gap and ultimately tie the ball game. LC had the ball in the final seconds of regulation, with Tatem Klaubauf driving to the lane. Klaubauf took a lot of contact, and no whistle came, giving the ball to the Tigers with a shot to win the game. Asher Vanden Heuval attempted to get a shot off at the buzzer, but it too came up shy, sending the game to overtime, tied at 55-55.

In the first overtime, Wrightstown got on the board first, and seemed well in control to start the extra period. The Spartans fought back valiantly, and managed to tie the game at 60-60. Once again, it would be Luxemburg Casco with the ball in the final seconds, trying to draw something up to win the game. As was the case in the end of regulation though, LC couldn’t get the look to go, giving the ball back to Wrightstown with 2 seconds on the clock, but this time, the Tigers had to go the length of the floor, and a half court heave came up just a bit too strong. The officials put 4 more minutes on the clock, and the scoring was light in the early going. Daniel Buntin split a trip to the line to put the Tigers up 61-60, and then a pair in the late going when the Spartans had to foul to try to get the ball back in the final minute. The Spartans would get one last shot at the buzzer, but a Piesler 3 pointer to extend the game rimmed out and gave Wrightstown a hard fought win.

Eli Derenne and Bryce Piesler led the scoring efforts for the Spartans, each scoring 16 in the contest. For the Tigers, it was Jack Genke leading the way, with a game high 20 points, with 16 points for Daniel Buntin. The Spartans will face one of their biggest tests of the season in their next game, when they take the court on Friday, hosting #1 ranked Freedom.

Spartans look to continue winning ways on 104.1 WRLU

Luxemburg Casco will be on the hunt for a third straight win, when they travel to Wrightstown for a North Eastern Conference game on Tuesday night, which will be broadcast on 104.1 WRLU.

The Spartans rang in the new year with a 56-42 win over Southern Door last Friday. Bryce Piesler and Tatem Klaubauf led Luxemburg Casco with 14 points each in the victory, with Ethan Ropson adding in 10 points.

Wrightstown will come into the game with a 3-6 record, but took down Valders in their last game, a 66-55 win in the Shawano Holiday Hoops Classic last week. Alden Cyra, the leading scorer for the Wrightstown, scored 17 in the win, aided by a 14 point effort by Daniel Buntin.

Eric Fischer and Ramsay Thompson will have the call, with the pregame show starting at 6:45, and tipoff slated for 7pm.

Spartans girls' basketball hosting Tigers

Spartans Survive Eagles in Second Half on U-102.1

The Luxemburg Casco Spartans survived a second half surge by the Southern Door Eagles on Friday night to keep the Eagles winless.

The Eagles won the opening tip, and put 2 points on the board or a very early lead, but the Spartans quickly answered with a three to take the early 3-2 lead.  Throughout the rest of the first half, the press of the Spartans gave the Eagles plenty of trouble forcing double digit turnovers in the half alone.  LC used that surge, to double up the point total of the Eagles in the half thanks to 12 points from Tatem Klaubauf, and 6 each from Bryce Piesler, Ethan Propson, and Eli Derenne.  Southern Door trailed 17-35 at the break with their leading scorer of the half being Talon Mueller with 7.

For anyone who tuned out at the break, they missed a second half surge from Southern Door.  The Eagles off and defense came out swinging in the second half, preventing the Spartans from putting a single point on the board for the first 10 minutes of the half while on a 14-0 run.  During the run, Lauden Berg would score nearly all of his game high 18 points, helping cut the game to a much closer 31-34 tally.  Rhyker Lohrey and Talon Mueller each added 9 in the game.

The Spartans would finally get back in to the scoring column with a 3 by Bryce Piesler.  The teams would trade buckets from that point on until in the final 2 minutes, the Spartan defense began forcing turnovers, and thanks to early foul trouble blew the game back open to its eventual 56-42 final.

The Spartans hit the road again in their next matchup that comes on Tuesday at Wrightstown. Eric Fischer will have the call of that game on 104.1 WRLU beginning at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the opening tip at 7 p.m.

Southern Door has a quick turnaround, hosting Marinette Monday at home, before hitting the road Tuesday for a matchup at Gibraltar. Tim Kowols will have the call of that game from Fish Creek beginning at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the opening tip at 7 p.m.

Spartans girls' basketball facing Storm at home

The Luxemburg-Casco girls’ basketball team is hosting the Kewaunee Storm this Friday. The Spartans are looking to bounce back from a 65-37 loss to Pulaski. Alana Mrotek and Karsyn Walczyk led the Spartan scoring, combining for 19 points. The Storm have won five in a row, most recently taking down Wrightstown 67-37 at the Shawano Holiday Hoops Classic.

Friday’s tip-off is at 7:00 PM.
