Spartans softball secures big win at home

The Luxemburg-Casco softball team responded to a slow start with eight-run fourth inning to beat the visiting New Holstein Huskies 13-4 on Thursday's opening day.

After falling behind 2-0, the Spartans took the lead, scoring three in the third inning on a two-RBI single by Rylan Kaminski and a run on an error. The Spartans broke the game open in the fourth, scoring eight runs. Josie Dorner's two-RBI single was the hitting highlight of the inning.

Winning pitcher Kate VanEss earned the victory in four innings of relief. VanEss surrendered two runs on six hits and struck out four.

Spartans soccer denied goals in season opening loss

Luxemburg-Casco's girls' soccer team could not muster the offense needed to get past the Seymour Thunder on Thursday, dropping their season opener 1-0 on the road.

The Thunder peppered goaltender Tabi Lemens for much of the game, but only snuck one of the 11 shots on goal past the senior netminder. That tally came in the second half. The Spartans' offense generated some chances, but could not get any of them to enter the goal mouth.

The Spartans will play again on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. when they travel to Ashwaubenon.

Spartans softball set for home opener

Sharing the day with most Major League Baseball teams, the Luxemburg-Casco softball team will open their 2024 campaign at home when they welcome New Holstein to the complex.

Monday's rains canceled the Spartans' original opener against Fox Valley Lutheran. The Spartans are coming off a 20-3 season that ended abruptly against NEC rival Marinette in the regional final with a 5-2 loss. While they did lose NEC Player of the Year Kylie Hanson to graduation, the Spartans do return plenty of experience, with All-NEC performers Josie Dorner, Payton Kaminski, Grace Kahr, Jillian Jorgensen, and Anna Vandermouse potentially returning for their senior season.

The Huskies went 25-3 last season just a couple of games short of the state tournament when they lost to state participant Mishicot 3-0 in the sectional round. They return three of their eight All-Eastern Wisconsin Conference team members from a season ago.

First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. at the Luxemburg-Casco Sports Complex.

Luxemburg-Casco soccer visits Seymour for season opener

The Luxemburg-Casco girls' soccer team will officially kick off their season on Thursday when they travel to Seymour to battle the Thunder.

The Spartans tuned up for Thursday's game against one of the best teams in the region by playing at De Pere on Tuesday. Goalkeeper Tabi Lemens, defender Alana Mrotek, and forward Emi Kuhn returned to the squad after being named part of the All-NEC team last season.

The Thunder finished 9-7-4 overall last season, including a 5-0 loss to Plymouth in the WIAA Regional Final last season. They finished in third place in the Bay Conference last season with four All-Conference performers. From that group, only Bree Schuettpelz returns to the fold.

Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m.

Spartans soccer tunes up against Redbirds

The Luxemburg-Casco girls' soccer team will prepare for their season opener on Thursday at Seymour with a friendly against De Pere on Tuesday, weather permitting.

The Spartans are coming off a 5-10-5 campaign that saw their season come to a close with a 4-0 loss to Marinette in the WIAA Regional round. They finished in the middle of the NEC table with a 3-3-2 mark. Goalkeeper Tabi Lemens, defender Alana Mrotek, and forward Emi Kuhn returned to the squad after being named part of the All-NEC team last season.

The Redbirds went 20-3 last season, losing to Bay Port in the sectional round 5-4 in their last action.

The scrimmage begins at 5 p.m. at De Pere. The Spartans will start their season in Seymour on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Luxemburg-Casco softball scheduled to open season against Fox Valley Lutheran

If Mother Nature allows, the Luxemburg-Casco softball team could hit the diamond as soon as today.

The Foxes went 8-15 last season, losing to the Spartans  13-0 in the regional round.

If the field dries out, the game will take place at 4:30 p.m.

Spartans track captures Kjono's 4x400m relay title

The combination of Lydia Morozov, Elaina Holschuh, Grace Seering, and McKenna Rank proved fruitful Friday at Manitowoc Lincoln's Pam Kjono Invite.

As a relay, the foursome took home the win in the 4x400m relay to go along with their other accolades during the meet. Holschuh took fourth in the triple jump while Morozov took fourth in the 55m dash and second in the 200m. Seering and Holschuh were part of another top five relay performance while Seering and Rank had similar success in the 55m hurdles and 400m respectively. Outside of that group of athletes, Claire Dechateau took second in the 1600m run.

Schutz, Beaupre lead Spartans in Herbert Invite

The Luxemburg-Casco track team opened their season Thursday night with impressive performances at the Hebert Invite in Manitowoc, including one event win.

Sam Schutz won the pole vault with a height of 11 feet, which is listed as a personal record. Trevor Beaupre nearly won two events of his own as he nearly broke 20 feet in the long jump and 40 feet in the triple jump to come in second place. Kyan Lynts took third in the 3200m, and two relays came in fifth place to lead the Spartans.

The girls take their turn at Manitowoc on Friday.

NEC football conference gets face lift

The Luxemburg-Casco football team will face different teams this upcoming season.

The WIAA gave the state's conferences its seemingly annual shuffle earlier this week, with some remaining unchanged while others saw teams move. The Northeastern Conference, which features Luxemburg-Casco, saw Sheboygan Falls and Two Rivers enter the conference while Fox Valley Lutheran exited. A mandatory crossover game with the Bay Conference remains.

The Packerland Conference saw no changes, while the Peninsula Conference for eight-player football saw its name change to the Across the Bay Conference while ditching Wausaukee, which went to the Northeast Conference. Teams like Gibraltar, Algoma, and Sevastopol will have to find another non-conference game or take a bye.

Spartans wrestling captures fourteenth team state title

Luxemburg-Casco's likely exit from Division 2 wrestling was on a high note as they defeated St. Croix Falls 36-19 to claim their 14th WIAA Team State Championship.

The Spartans and the Saints traded wins early in a trio of low-scoring matches. Carson Neubert switched the momentum in favor of the Spartans with a two-period tech fall. The two teams split the next four matches before the Spartans' Caleb Delebreau secured a first-period pin. The score would remain close until the final three matches when Sam Schutz, Trace Schoenebeck, and Ezra Waege won out to clinch the title for the Spartans.

The win marked the second straight title for the Spartans after being Prairie du Chien last year, but there will be no repeat at Division 2. The WIAA's new Performance Factor rules have the Spartans likely moving up to Division 1 based on the program's past success. They will try to return to Madison sans nine senior: Jake Jandrin, Michael Bostwick, Brian Enderby, Delebreau, Max Ronsman, Isaac Jerabek, Schutz, Schoenebeck, and Waege.

Luxemburg-Casco powers past Kewaskum, face St. Croix Falls for title on U-102.1

A fast start helped the Luxemburg-Casco wrestling team secure its berth in the state championship match with a 51-17 victory over Kewaskum.

After trading victories, the Spartans' Jake Jandrin, Carson Blohowiak, and Carson Neubert registered three consecutive pins to stake the team to a sizable lead. The Indians would take two close regular decisions after that, but the Spartans would win six of the final eight matches to earn the victory, with Max Ronsman and Trace Schoenebeck also picking up pins.

The Spartans are back in action this afternoon after St. Croix Falls shocked Prairie du Chien with a pin in the final match to steal it away from last year's state finalist 27-26. Tim Kowols and Newton Smerchek will have the action on U-102.1 beginning at 2:45 p.m., with the pregame show followed by the first match at 3 p.m.

Spartans wrestling looks to capture team state title on U-102.1 Saturday

Winning has followed the Luxemburg-Casco wrestling team all season long, and it will hopefully make the trip to the UW Field House on Saturday for the program's 20th appearance in the Team State Wrestling Championships.

The Spartans brought nine and finished with nine podium finishers, including 138-pound state champion Caleb Delebreau. Delebreau won his title with a 3-2 decision over Cole Bozile (Oconto Falls). Max Ronsman narrowly missed out on his second state championship, losing a 6-1 decision to Danny Heiser (Evansville). The Spartans also had Carson Neubert take 3rd place, Carson Blohowiak finished in fourth place, Blakelee Bastien in fifth place, and Jake Jandrin, Michael Bostwick, Isaac Jerabek, and Trace Schoenebeck snagged sixth place. The Spartans went undefeated in their dual meets this season and captured several tournament titles.

The top-seeded Spartans will face Kewaskum in the first dual of the day at 10 a.m. The Indians had four wrestlers at last weekend's individual state tournament, including third-place finishes by Bryston Scoles and Ethan Immel. In the team sectional, they beat Jefferson 73-6 before topping Campbellsport 49-21. The winner will take on #2 Saint Croix Falls or #3 Prairie du Chien at 3 p.m.

Tim Kowols and Newton Smerchek will have the call beginning at 9:45 a.m. on U-102.1 and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com, with the pre-match show followed by the first whistle at 10 a.m. If the Spartans win, the duo will return for the championship match at 2:45 p.m. with the pre-match show followed by the first whistle at 3 p.m.
