Luxemburg-Casco Track looks forward to summer season

The Luxemburg-Casco Track Team will try to bring closure to its 2020 season next week.

The squad will host a week of practice that is optional for athletes from July 6th-10th from 4 to 6 p.m. The team will follow WIAA reopening guidelines, including only parents being allowed when competing, no sharing of equipment or relays, and alternate lanes for races.

The school will also host a lifting camp for all athletes beginning July 6th with a cap set at 28 students for the six sessions.

Luxemburg-Casco going without head coach for 2020 season

About four weeks after Dillon Maney left Luxemburg-Casco High School to take an assistant coach position at Bay Port, the Spartans announced they would be tackling 2020 with a coaching committee. Roles are still being defined as the program begins to plot out its summer schedule, including contact practices in Mid-July. Coach Neil Seering provided a video update Friday, which is linked here.

Two different coaches led the Luxemburg-Casco wrestling team to three team state titles in the 2010s.

After falling to Ellsworth in 2011, Bob Berceau and the Spartans got revenge the following year, winning the 2012 state champion over them by a 41-13 margin. They followed that up the following year , this time defeating Mauston 45-13. Luxemburg-Casco would not appear in another state final until Chas Treml took the team to Madison in 2017. Facing a familiar foe, the Spartans fell to Ellsworth 27-26.

For a second straight year, the Spartans traded blows with Ellsworth and for a second straight year, each team split their 14 matches. This time, however, it was the Spartans that captured more bonus points and won the team state title 30-28.

There was also plenty of individual wrestlers who also won their own state title during those special years.

2018- Bryce Bosman, Luxemburg-Casco (50-2)

2013- Luke Destiche, Luxemburg-Casco (46-7)

2012- Newton Smerchek, Luxemburg-Casco (49-2)

DKHS.com's Champion of Champions Series: 2000s Luxemburg-Casco Wrestling

A Luxemburg-Casco alum took the torch during the 2000s and made sure the wrestling team did not skip a beat.

During the 2000s, head coach and former state champion wrestler Bob Berceau led five teams to state championships, including three straight from 2001 to 2003.

In 2001, the Spartans met Ellsworth in the state final again, topping them 30-19. The following year it was Lodi that fell to the Spartans in the state final by a 34-18 margin. The run ended in 2003 when they edged Lodi in a rematch 29-25. Left out of the state finals in 2004, the Spartans returned to the top of the Division 2 wrestling world in 2005, pounding Lomira 64-6. The Spartans last title of the decade was in 2006 when they beat Lodi 39-32. They would make the state final the following year, but the Spartans fell to Ellsworth 33-22.

The following wrestlers earned double-gold medals by winning individual titles the same year they won state with the team.

2003- Brian Barbiaux, Luxemburg-Casco (46-2)

2005- Brian Barbiaux, Luxemburg-Casco (37-2)

DKHS.com's Champion of Champions Series: 1990s Luxemburg-Casco Wrestling

The Chicago Bulls, Dallas Cowboys and the Luxemburg-Casco wrestling team can all say their dynasties started in the 1990s, though it is the third one that has been able to sustain it.

From 1992 to 1999, the Spartans won four state titles to put the program on the map. When Emil Kuhn's 1992 squad defeated Lancaster 40-20 for the Division 2 title, it was the first time a team state champion was determined in the dual meet format. Kuhn would lead three more teams to titles to close out the decade with the Spartans beating Nekoosa in 1994 31-18, Baldwin-Woodville 30-23 in 1996, and in 1999 beating Ellsworth 26-24.

Those teams had wrestlers that were also able to claim gold medals in the individual tournament and are listed below:

1999- Nick Pell, Luxemburg-Casco (41-2)
1992- Mike Selner, Luxemburg-Casco (25-7-1)

L-C wrestler named honorable mention All-American

Months after walking off the mat at the Kohl Center as a two-time state champion, Luxemburg-Casco wrestler Reece Worachek earned more recognition for his career.

A three-time place winner, Worachek was named a Wrestling USA Magazine Honorable Mention All-American. Worachek was also part of two team state-qualifying squads, including a state championship in 2017. He went a combined 165-37 on the mat during his time wrestling for the Spartans.

Luxemburg-Casco to honor spring athletes

Luxemburg-Casco High School will honor its senior spring sports athletes one last time before the summer officially begins.

On Thursday, June 11th from 1:00-9:00, banners of each of the senior spring athletes will be on display in the Athletic Complex. Community members are invited to drive through the complex to look at the banners displaying the seniors who missed out on the spring season due to COVID-19. At 9 p.m., they will turn on the lights for about 20 minutes as a final salute to the senior class. The district is encouraging people to stay in their car during the event.

DKHS.com's Champion of Champions Series: 1994 Luxemburg-Casco Girls' Basketball

The Luxemburg-Casco won a pair of low-scoring games at the UW Fieldhouse in the winter of 1994 to capture their second state championship.

In its state semifinal game, the Spartans outscored Durand 17-2 in the opening frame and neither team would crack double digits again in a 34-21 victory. Mary Destiche was the only member on the team to crack double digits, scoring 14 points. Things opened up a little more in the state final game with the Spartans beating Monona Grove in a nail-biting 46-44 contest. After going down 15-9 in the first quarter, the Spartans got it even by the beginning of the fourth quarter, outscoring their opponents 11-9 in the final frame to capture the program's second-ever state tournament title. Kelly Warnke led the team with 18 points and Destriche pitched in 11.

It was the first of two straight tournament runs for the Spartans, which lost to Holmen the following year.

DKHS.com's Champion of Champions Series: 2004 Luxemburg-Casco Girls' Basketball

Some of the success the Green Bay women's program would have in the 2000s was born during the 2004 Luxemburg-Casco state championship season.

Future Phoenix standouts Rachel Porath and Trisha Legois were a one-two offensive punch for a Spartans squad that went undefeated during the season, including a 53-37 state semifinal win against Mosinee and a 59-51 championship clincher over Richland Center. In the game against Mosinee, the pair combine to score 32 of the team's 53 points while also helping hold Mosinee to just 29 percent shooting from the field. The team also finished its halves strong in the contest, outscoring their opponents 16-3 in the second quarter and 22-9 in the final stanza. In the championship game another future Phoenix standout Erin Templin would try to knock out the Spartans. She scored 16 but her future teammates combined to score 37 points in the Spartans last state championship win. The Spartans would make the state tournament in 2011, but lose in the final.

Maney leaving Luxemburg-Casco football for Bay Port

After 7 years, Dillon Maney has stepped down as the head coach of the Luxemburg-Casco football program to take a physical education teaching position at Howard-Suamico School District.  Maney led the Spartans to a winning record of 47-26 during his tenor at L-C.  The Spartans finished 3-5 in 2019 which was the only losing season in Maney's career as the Spartan head coach.  The Spartans reached the level 3 playoffs twice in Division back in 2014 and 2016.  Maney will be part of Bay Port Pirates' coaching staff as an assistant this year.  Luxemburg-Casco will now accept applications for the head coaching position and look to fill the job while the uncertainty of fall sports remains.

DKHS.com's Champion of Champions Series: 1988 Luxemburg-Casco Girls' Basketball

The first of three Luxemburg-Casco girls' basketball state titles is coming up on its 35th anniversary in a few years.

In 1988, the Spartans had convincing wins over Monona Grove (63-45) and Horicon (71-60) to capture the state title. Ann Seidl scored 42 points over the two-game span to be one of the most prolific scorers in state tournament history. Much of that work came from the free throw-line as she hit 12 free throws in the title game to clinch the victory over Horicon and 18 shots overall. With 1.000 shooting percentage, she is tied as the best free-throw shooter in state tournament history.

Luxemburg-Casco Baseball Senior Day: Dylan Dahlke

Shout out to the clean up hitter who was a consistent force in the middle of our lineup last season, #19 Pitcher/First Basemen Dylan Dahlke! Dylan, who is a young man of many nicknames to his fellow teammates and friends, has been participating in the game as a young buck since age 5. Along with many clutch at-bats and hits in his Jr season, one of Dahlke’s fondest memories was a walk-off he had to send the team to sectionals two years ago in his sophomore season. Dylan credits his love and passion for the game to his father Todd who has been there to support and teach him the game his whole life growing up. His father is who he looks up to and admires the most for the support he’s given him all these years, and in the future years as Dylan starts to create his own path. Dahlke plans on attending UW-Green Bay in the fall and enrolling in their Business Administration program. With this he is interested in learning more about the real estate business and says he could one day see himself dealing with real estate brokerage. When he isn’t playing baseball, Dylan likes to trade his bat in for a club and hit the links for a round of golf. Dylan is poised for great things and as a strong silent type was going to be one of our captains this season, and we were so excited to see him lead with his understanding, compassion for his teammates, and his love for the game. One thing that as a coach stood out to me about Dylan was his selflessness in a game last summer where we were short players and he volunteered to move positions to help the lineup be more flexible. He is selfless and can see the big picture at a young age. We’re proud of you Dahlke and excited for your future endeavors, best of luck to you and Congratulations 19!
