Spartans fall just short against Denmark on 96.7 WBDK

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans rallied but came up short Friday night in losing to the Denmark Vikings 35-30 in North Eastern Conference football action at Leiterman Field on 96.7 WBDK.

The Spartans trailed by as many as 19 points in the second half and struggled to contain Denmark’s explosive special teams.

Viking running back Nolan Perry scored three touchdowns, including two 90-yard kickoff returns for scores to lead the Vikings.

Ryan Routhieaux had a huge game for L-C, scoring on a 70-yard punt return and returning a fumble 55 yards in the fourth quarter to cut Denmark's lead to five points.

Denmark opened the scoring on a 15-yard scamper by Reis Johnson with 5:55 left in the first quarter.  The Spartans tied it on a 40-yard pass from freshman quarterback Brayden Loritz to Braeden Schley before Perry returned the ensuing kickoff for one of his three scores.

George Herlache kicked a 26-yard field goal to cut the lead to 14-10 with 8:16 left in the half, but Denmark would score twice more before intermission to take a commanding 28-10 lead.

Routhieaux electrified the Spartan faithful with his 70-yard punt return to make it 28-16, only to see Perry take the kickoff back for his second TD return of the night with 9:34 left in the third quarter.

Spartan Chris VanderWielen scored on a seven-yard run with 7:22 left in the third quarter to cut the Viking lead to 35-23.

The Spartans had a few chances late but could not get the ball past midfield in the final minutes, as Denmark secured their homecoming win.

Denmark (3-2, 4-3) will now take on Freedom next week, while Luxemburg-Casco (2-3, 4-3 overall) will host Fox Valley Lutheran next Friday night.

Spartans lose Ronsman, homecoming game to Freedom on 96.7 WBDK

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartan’s homecoming was spoiled by the Freedom Irish Friday night after a 26-14 loss in North Eastern Conference football action.  The game turned quickly when quarterback Max Ronsman severely injured his right ankle early in the second quarter and never returned to the game.

The Spartans started fast scoring on their first two possessions and stunning the Irish by forcing to three-and-outs on Freedom’s first two possessions.

Luxemburg-Casco struck early on a 59-yard strike from Ronsman to Ryan Routhieaux to set up a four-yard run by Routhieaux to open the scoring with 8:50 left in the first quarter.   Ronsman then scored on a 12-yard scramble to make it 14-0 and seem in control of the game.

The momentum all changed when the Spartans drove to the 10-yard line of Freedom and on the first play of the second quarter, Ronsman was injured on a run and fumbled.

Freedom then scored 20 unanswered points before halftime, including a 40-yard interception returned for a touchdown by Gavin Greiner.

The second half saw both teams trade turnovers twice with Freedom finally taking control with 5:15 left in the game on Carter Kriewaldt’s second touchdown run of the night to make it 26-14 and keep the Irish undefeated.

Competitive balance proposal targets successful teams

Sturgeon Bay soccer and Luxemburg-Casco volleyball would likely have to play up a division if a new competitive balance proposal is approved. According to WisSports.net, the WIAA is discussing a new proposal to address the gap between the best and worst teams in a given division by assigning them points based on their success in the state tournament series. Teams could get up to four points for winning a state title and at least one if they make it to a sectional final or Level 2 playoff for football. Accumulate at least six points in three years, and you could find yourself in a higher division. If the proposal were in effect this fall, the Spartans volleyball would undoubtedly find themselves in the Division 1 Tournament after winning their third straight state championship in Division 2. If the system were in place a few years ago, the Clippers soccer team also would have found themselves in a higher division after playing in four state tournaments and winning the gold ball twice. Spartans volleyball coach Jeff Frey believes the proposal punishes success but admits addressing competitive balance is a tricky topic.

A multiplier for private schools and a reducer for schools with a high percentage of students on free and reduced lunch are other ways the WIAA has tried to address competitive balance over the years without any success.

The Vikings have a similar mark this season, going 2-5 overall, including 1-2 in the Northeastern Conference. That includes a 5-1 loss to Wrightstown in their last reported match.

Match time is set for 4:30 p.m.

Luxemburg-Casco falls to Little Chute on 96.7 WBDK

The battle of the L-Cs ended with the Luxemburg-Casco Spartans falling just short against the Little Chute Mustangs, 14-8, in a North Eastern Conference thriller at Fitzpatrick Field.

Little Chute opened the game with a 73-yard drive that culminated by a four-yard touchdown run by Drew Joten.  The Spartans responded with a 65-yard drive of their own on a 38-yard strike from quarterback Max Ronsman to Ryan Routhieaux to cut the Mustang lead to 7-6.  Ronsman then scrambled and scored on a two-point conversion to give the Spartans an 8-7 lead with 1:30 left in the first quarter.

The only other scoring during the night came when Mustang quarterback Charlie VandenBurgt hit his big receiver, Hunter Thiel, on a 27-yard touchdown pass with 6:09 left in the half.

The second half saw the Spartans get into Little Chute territory but turn the ball over on downs as the Mustang defense contained the Luxemburg-Casco offense the rest of the way.

The Spartans did have one final chance when the defense held Little Chute on fourth down with just under two minutes left at the Spartan 10-yard line, but a desperation drive ended at mid-field on a short completion to Sawyer Dorn.

Luxemburg Casco (1-6 Overall, 0-3 NEC), have struggled after beating Kewaunee the first game of the season. The Spartans have struggled to score so far this season, averaging 0.86 goals per game, and must start scoring the ball more to get the losing streak broken.

Freedom (2-3 Overall, 2-1 NEC), have been back and forth all year, never losing or winning more than one game in a row. The Irish have been able to score more goals than the Spartans have per game, with their average being over a goal a game.

The match is set for 4:30 P.M.

Spartans overcome slow start, tame Wolves on 104.1 WRLU

It took a while, but the Luxemburg-Casco Spartans were able to get the offense clicking in the second half en route to a 28-7 victory over the Winneconne Wolves on Friday night.

Both teams were able to register big stops against each other in the first half with each just scoring once. The Wolves got onto the scoreboard first with a 25 yard run from Ethan Mathe to make it 7-0. The Spartans would tie the game in the second quarter on a short touchdown run by Max Ronsman to make it 7-7 heading into the break.

The Spartans would get their eventual game-winning score in the third quarter when Ronsman hit Sawyer Dorn on a post route to make it 13-7. The play of the game may have happened in the fourth quarter. After the Wolves forced the Spartans to turn the ball over on the downs, the Spartans got the ball almost immediately back when they forced quarterback Brady Immel to fumble the ball and a Luxemburg-Casco defender picked it up. A few moments later, Ronsman would find Ryan Routhieaux for the touchdown and with a two-point conversion, made it 21-7. Jacob DeGrave would add an insurance score with a two-yard rushing touchdown to make it 28-7.

The player of the game was Sawyer Dorn, who scored the game-winning score in the third quarter and provided a number of key blocks that set up big gains in the passing game.

The Spartans are back in action next Friday as they travel to Little Chute to face the Mustangs. Paul Schmitt and Reece Robillard will have the call on 104.1 WRLU with the pregame show at 6:45 p.m. and the kickoff at 7 p.m.

Luxemburg-Casco, Southern Door run at Chilton

Luxemburg-Casco and Southern Door will end their week with an invitational in Chilton on Friday.

Southern Door and Luxemburg-Casco will head to Chilton for an invitational featuring Chilton, Denmark, Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah, Hilbert, and Wrightstown. The first race begins at 4 p.m.

Both teams have had strong performances in each other presence this season. The Spartans' Gabe Havel took second in the boys' race and the Eagles' Brooke Strege captured first place when the two teams raced against each other at the Chief Kahquados Invitational hosted by Gibraltar last month. The Spartans captured most of the team awards at that invitational and have collected hardware at some of the meets they have been at since.

Spartans soccer struggles continue

The Luxemburg-Casco soccer team will have to wait until Tuesday to snap a six-game skid after losing to Roncalli 5-3 on Thursday.

Zap Patek and Johan Amador provided the offense for the Spartans. Patek scored twice while Amador registered a goal and an assist on the night.

The Spartans had no answer for Matthew Bonin, who scored three goals in the contest to lead the Jets to victory.

The Spartans will play at Freedom on Tuesday.

Spartans volleyball sweeps Marinette

The Luxemburg-Casco volleyball team rallied around its home crowd for the first time this year and emerged victorious with a 3-0 sweep of Marinette on Thursday.

The Spartans never allowed the Marines to crack 20 points in a single set, winning 25-11, 26-16, 25-12 while improving their record to 12-3/2-0 on the season. Despite the lopsided score, head coach Jeff Frey credited the Marines with playing hard in the match. "It was great to play in front of our crowd tonight for the first time this year and get a win on our home court.  We need to continue to grow and attack everytime we step on the court," Frey said afterward.

Leading the way for the Spartans were Alayna Deprez (21 assists and 3 aces), Autumn Flynn (9 Kills, 3 aces, and 2 blocks), Campbell Onell (8 kills), and Ella VanderVelden (6 kills).

Spartans look to stay perfect in football vs Winneconne on 104.1 WRLU

The Luxemburg-Casco football looks to stay perfect this season when they host Winneconne Friday night.

The Spartans' current regular-season winning streak dates back to October 2nd, 2020, when they lost to Wrightstown. After a couple weeks off due to health concerns, the Spartans toppled Southern Door in a makeshift game and have not looked back. They had a scare last week against Xavier that eventually went to the Spartans by a 21-17 score. The Spartans were down at the end of three quarters, but a touchdown and a key interception later kept them perfect. The streak is something head coach Neil Seering does not think to much about.

The Wolves come into the game 1-2 on the year after falling to Fox Valley Lutheran last week 49-23.

Tim Kowols and Reece Robillard will have the call on 104.1 WRLU and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com beginning at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame show followed by kickoff at 7 p.m.

Spartans golf play in NEC Triangular in De Pere

L-C Volleyball to host Marinette Marines in NEC matchup

The WIAA Division 2 reigning State Champions are off to the start that everyone would have projected, as Luxemburg-Casco takes on the Marinette Marines in a North Eastern Conference matchup.

The Spartans have started their season off right, with an impressive 11-3 record overall, and a 1-0 record in the NEC after a 3-0 sweep of Denmark. The Spartans have swept half of the games that they have played, sweeping 7 of the 14 that have been played. L-C appears to be once again another force in the North Eastern Conference and will look to continue that over the Marines.

Marinette hasn’t played as many matches as the Spartans have, as they are 1-4 overall and 0-1 in conference play after falling to Fox Valley Lutheran by way of a 3-0 sweep. The Marines will look to turn the tides tonight and play upset against the Spartans.

7:00 P.M. is the time for the first serve in Luxemburg Casco.

Spartans soccer look to get back to winning against Roncalli

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans soccer team will face off against the Roncalli Jets Thursday night, looking to get back to their winning ways.

The Spartans are having a challenging start to their 2022 season, going 1-5 in their matches so far, and 0-3 in the NEC matches they have played. The Spartans have only been averaging 0.5 goals per game so far this soccer season, so the offense will have to be going against the Jets Thursday night to walk off their home field with a win.

Roncalli has had a better start to their season, going 2-1-1 in all non conference games, with their conference consisting of 2 other teams besides them. The Jets have averaged 3 goals per game so far this year, so the Spartans will have to get the offense going, and stop the Jets offense as well.

The match is scheduled to start at 5:30 in Luxemburg-Casco.

Luxemburg-Casco soccer looks for breakthrough performance

The Luxemburg-Casco soccer team looks to get out of the basement of the North Eastern Conference Tuesday night when they host Wrightstown.

The Spartans are winless since their season-opening 8-1 victory over neighboring Kewaunee. That includes an 0-2 mark in the NEC by a 7-3 margin to Waupaca and Clintonville. The Spartans lost their last game to Sheboygan 4-2.

The Tigers went 3-0 to start the season, outscoring their opponents 20-1 in the process. They lost their last game, however, 1-0 to St. Mary Catholic.

Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m.

The team won three matches before falling to Brookfield Central in the semifinals in three sets. They swept Kewaskum to take bronze. Head coach Jeff Frey said afterwards that he "loved the the way our team responded to adversity today and the resiliency that we showed.  Each time on the floor we keep showing a lot of growth, which is awesome to see."

Spartans hang on for 21-17 win over Xavier on 104.1 WRLU

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans edged the Xavier Hawks 21-17 in a non-conference game Friday night at Rocky Bleier Field in Appleton. Turning the Hawks away at midfield in the final minute on an interception by Sam Schutz, allowed the Spartans to remain undefeated for the season.

The Spartans scored first on a 13 yard run by Jacob DeGrave in the first quarter and a 37 yard run by quarterback Max Ronsman to give L-C a 14-0 lead in the second quarter.

Xavier would come back to score on a 25-yard field goal by A.J. Seidler on the final play of the half and carryover the momentum with two touchdowns in the third quarter to take a 17-14.

Luxemburg-Casco responded with the drive of the game when Ronsman hit Ryan Routhieaux from 15 yards out to give the Spartans the lead for good at 21-17.

Xavier turned the ball over four times in the game, including two fumbles in the fourth quarter that the Spartans could not capitalize on, but the interception on fourth down by Schutz sealed the victory with :44 left in the game.

Luxemburg-Casco (3-0) will now play the Winneconne Wolves next Friday night at home on Veterans Night with pregame on 104.1 WRLU and New Radio Sports Network starting at 6:45 and kickoff at 7 pm.  Tim Kowols and Reece Robillard will have the call for the game.

The Spartans took the match by a 25-15, 25-4, 25-7 score. Head coach Jeff Frey said afterward that "tonight was a good way to start the conference season.  After a slow start, I thought we controlled the match.  We put a lot of pressure on them from the service line."

Leading the way for the Spartans were Alayna Deprez (12 assists and 3 aces), Josie Dorner (8 assists), Autumn Flynn (8 Kills and 4 blocks), Campbell Onell (7 Kills), and Brooke VandeHei (9 digs and 7 aces).

Spartans travel to Appleton Xavier on 104.1 WRLU

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans will look to keep their 2022 record perfect Friday as they travel to Appleton to take on the Xavier Hawks.

The Spartans are coming off a 56-6 drubbing of Seymour last week, which saw L-C take a 50-0 lead into halftime.

Xavier (1-1) has split a pair of low-scoring games against two NEC conference teams this season.  The Hawks nipped Denmark 7-6 in the opener and fell to Little Chute 14-6 last Friday on the road.

Max Ronsman and Ryan Routhieaux had huge games last week and will look to find the end zone against a staunch Xavier defense.

The pregame show will begin at 6:45 pm from Xavier High School with kickoff at 7 pm on 104.1 WRLU and streamed on New Radio Sports Network.  Paul Schmitt and Reece Robillard will be on the call for the broadcast.

L-C boys cross country team looks to win again at Wisconsin-Green Bay meet

The Luxemburg Casco Spartans cross country team will be hitting the trails at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay as they take part in the De Pere invitational. Joined by them also is the Kewaunee Storm, the only other local team participating.

The Spartans boys cross country team is coming off of a victory at the Chief K Invitational in Gibraltar. Leading that team was Gabe Havel and Spencer Thiry. Havel finished second in the race, and Thiry finished 7th. They will be once again looking for a team win as they take on some good competition at a tough course.

For the girls team, Madilyn Bevins came off of a second place finish at the Chief K Invitational, behind Southern Door’s Brooke Strege. Bevins ran a 21:26.0 time, which narrowly finished behind Strege. Bevins will not have to worry about Strege this meet, but will meet some other great runners that she will look to improve her time against.

That meet will kick off with the girls race first at 5:20, with the boys shortly following behind at 5:50.

State Champion Spartans open conference play against Vikings

After winning the WIAA State tournament about 9 months ago, the Luxemburg Casco Spartans girl volleyball team is back in conference action when they travel to Denmark.

The Spartans did what every team dreams of doing last season, and look to potentially repeat. They went 6-2 at the Sun Prairie Tournament last Friday. After starting the tournament 0-2, the Spartans won 6 in a row to finish the tournament off on the right note. Another potentially big season is on the books for the Lady Spartans.

The Vikings of Denmark were a .500 team last year, going 11-11 in their matches all season, and 5-4 in conference play. A match against the Spartans will show Denmark how the team fares against the rest of the North Eastern Conference this year.

First serve is scheduled for 7:00 P.M. in Denmark.

Luxemburg Casco soccer heads south to Sheboygan South

Luxemburg Casco will have to make a long drive south to play their non-conference matchup on Thursday night, as they take on Sheboygan South.

The Spartans started their season off right, being Kewaunee 8-1, but have sputtered after that, losing their last 3 matches by a combined score of 11-4. L-C will look to get back on the right track against South tonight, before a big matchup against the Tigers of Wrightstown.

The Redwings of Sheboygan South are playing the second game of their season, after facing off against Port Washington last Tuesday. The result of that game was not reported. South was 7-11-1 last season, and 2-6-1 in the Fox River Classic Conference (FRCC).

The match is scheduled for 6:00 P.M. in Sheboygan.
