Three point shooting barrage ends Spartans season on 104.1 WRLU

The Luxemburg Casco Spartans season has come to an end, as it fell to the Xavier Hawks 67-46 in the WIAA Division 2 Regional Finals as heard on 104.1 WRLU.

Luxemburg Casco grabbed an early lead at 4-2 as both teams matched baskets early. The Hawks went on a 9-0 run before the Spartans got on back in the scoring column.  After the run ended, Sienna Blohowiak led a valiant charge back into the game, as the teams traded buckets.  The Spartans got the game as close as 25-20, before Xavier caught fire from behind the arc.  Thanks in large part to Brynn Krull's sharpshooting efforts, the Hawks closed the half outscoring LC 20-4 to take a 45-24 lead to the locker room.

Luxemburg Casco and Xavier matched baskets early in the second half, but the Spartans were unable to make a significant dent into the Hawks' advantage.  The Spartans did clamp down on the perimeter defense, only allowing a single three-point make in the second half, compared to eight in the first half.  Unfortunately, the halftime deficit was too much to overcome, as the teams drew even in the second half.

Sienna Blohowiak led all scorers with 21 points, with teammate Chloe Host also in double figures with 10 points for the Spartans.  Krull finished the game with 20 for Xavier, leading a trio of Hawks double digit scorers.  Annika Heimann added 12 points, and Hailey Hafner scored 11 to round out the double-digit scoring efforts.

Luxemburg Casco's season comes to an end, with a final record of 13-13.  The Spartans will lose 4 seniors: Alana Mrotek, Brianna Bray, Chloe Host, and Alayna Deprez.  Xavier will move on to play West De Pere in the sectional semi-final on Thursday.

L-C's Neubert keeps repeat bid alive

All three Luxemburg-Casco wrestlers at this weekend's WIAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament in Madison still have a chance at hardware on Saturday after a successful day on the mat.

Carson Neubert clinched his second straight finals appearance after a first-period pin of Slinger's  Emmitt Becker. Joey Jeanquart nearly joined him in the Grand March, but fell to Hortonville's Cashtyn Botting 7-2 to drop him to the 3rd place match. Kiley Georgel's final placing will be sorted out on Saturday as she stays alive in the consolation brackets.

Spartans power past Plymouth, will play for Regional Title on 104.1 WRLU

Luxemburg Casco's season will continue, as the Spartans took down Plymouth 44-29 on 104.1 WRLU to advance to the regional finals on Saturday night.

Luxemburg Casco jumped out to a 7-0 lead early on, as Sienna Blohowiak scored 5 early points to put the Spartans in front.  Natalie Mauk got the Panthers on the board when she split a trip to the free throw line, followed by a bucket by Claire Poppe.  The make by Poppe would be the only field goal that Plymouth would make in the first half, as Luxemburg Casco closed the half on a 15-2 run, to take a 22-5 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Scoring picked up in the second half, with Plymouth scoring on its first two possessions, nearly matching its first-half scoring total.  Luxemburg Casco was able to keep pace, though, spreading the scoring efforts out.  The Panthers got as close as 10 points, thanks to the long-range shooting of Izzy Stielow, who scored 12 points, all on second-half three-pointers.  With the score tightening, and the Spartans holding a 39-29 lead, a late bucket by Alayna Deprez gave LC a bit of breathing room, as it closed the game on a 5-0 run, including a pair of made free throws by Karsyn Walczyk that iced the game and led to the Panthers pulling its starters.

Blohowiak's 10 points paced the Spartans, with Deprez and Alana Mrotek each adding 8 to power the Spartans into the WIAA Regional Finals.  Luxemburg Casco will travel to #1 Xavier (Appleton) on Saturday night. The Hawks moved on courtesy of a 59-33 win over Ashwaubenon.  We will have the broadcast of that game on 104.1 WRLU with the pregame show at 6:45, with tipoff to follow at 7 pm.

Spartans girls begin playoff run on 104.1 WRLU

The Road to the Resch kicks off tonight for the Luxemburg Casco Spartans as it hosts the Plymouth Panthers on 104.1 WRLU.

The Spartans come in as the #4 seed in the WIAA playoffs, having finished the season at 12-12.  This earned Luxemburg Casco a first round bye into the Regional Semifinals, and the opportunity to host the opening contest.  The Spartans will be without its leading scorer, Brianna Bray, who averaged 12.7 points per game. LC will also be looking to turn the tide, as it lost its last game 48-41 to Oconto Falls.

Plymouth comes in as the #5 seed, also with a 12-12 record. The Panthers dropped 2 of its last 3 games prior to receiving a first round bye into the playoffs. Senior forward Ezra Streblow leads Plymouth averaging nearly a double-double with 11.7 points per game, and 9.4 rebounds per game.

Eric Fischer will have the call from Luxemburg Casco High School, with the pregame show starting at 6:45, and tipoff at 7pm.

Jeanquart, Neubert make semifinals

Luxemburg-Casco will have two wrestlers competing in Friday night's WIAA State Tournament semifinals after a successful day on the mats Thursday.

Wrightstown is coming off a 68-59 win over Denmark.

The Spartans aim to rebound from an 86-61 loss to Oconto Falls. Jacob Coisman led the Spartans with 15 points, seven rebounds, three assists and four steals. Bryce Piesler added nine points, while Eli Derenne and Ethan Ropson scored eight points each.

Tipoff is at 7 p.m.

Luxemburg-Casco's Neubert looks to defend state title

Luxemburg-Casco 144-pound wrestler Carson Neubert knows there is a target on his back, but he's not running away from it.

Neubert won a state championship at 126 pounds last year with a record of 51-1, a loss that occurred to a non-Wisconsinite. He will enter the Kohl Center under similar circumstances with a 50-1 record with his one defeat coming against a different non-Wisconsinite. Stepping onto the mat as a defending state champion has been more privlege than pressure for Neubert

Improving and winning state championships is not the only thing that is keeping Neubert motivated as his high school career is on the doorstep of its final year. Neubert is eyeing a state record before his days as a Spartan are over.

Neubert will open the WIAA Individual State Wrestling Tournament with a bye, but will still wrestling later in the day on Thursday. You can listen to our interview with Neubert and replays of our other interviews with some of the area's other state qualifiers on the latest episode of the Kewaunee County Wrestling Podcast sponsored by Total Dairy Service.

Luxemburg-Casco wrestling's Team State push ends

The Luxemburg-Casco wrestling team will likely not be moving onto the Team State Wrestling Championships in LaCrosse this year after splitting its four duals on Saturday.

After beating FRCC champion Pulaski 41-30 in the quarterfinals and edging Hortonville 34-31 in the semifinals, the Luxemburg-Casco Spartan Wrestling team to get within one win away from returning to Team State, a tournament they were shut out of last year in their first year of being in Division 1.

Things went south after that with the Spartans falling to Kaukauna 62-11 and to Bay Port 38-29. The Spartans mustered just three wins in their loss to Kaukauna and needed five straight wins at the end of their dual against the Pirates to get it within single digits.

Carson Neubert went 4-0 while Joseph Jeanquart, Mason Boulanger, Linken Bastien, Josiah Bastien, Logan Ellwanger, and Zaender Schoenebeck posted multiple wins. Jeanquart was extra special as he recorded his 100th win.

The state's seven team sectional winners will all advance to the LaCrosse Center for the Team State Tournament. Seven runners-up, including Bay Port, will have to wait for the WIAA to select them as a wild card.

Jeanquart, Neubert, and Kiley Georgel still have matches to win when they travel to the Kohl Center for Individual State Tournament next weekend.

Luxemburg-Casco (-1): Unsportsmanlike conduct - #190
Bay Port (-1): Unsportsmanlike conduct - Coach

Panthers' defense shines in second half

Luxemburg-Casco was on the road against Oconto Falls on Friday and kept pace for much of the first half but couldn’t keep up once the Panthers’ defense turned stops into quick scoring opportunities.

L-C trailed by just one after a layup at the 9:30 mark and later used a 4-0 run to tie the game at 25 with 3:25 left in the half.

Coming out of the break, the Spartans trailed 33-30, but an 11-2 run ignited the crowd in favor of Oconto Falls, and Luxemburg-Casco never regained momentum.

The Spartans fell 86-61 on the road.

One regular-season matchup remains for the boys, as they host Wrightstown on Feb. 26 for a 7 p.m. tipoff.

Luxemburg-Casco's Steinhorst carries on wrestling tradition

After spending a year on the Luxemburg-Casco dance team, Jakayla Steinhorst decided to enter the family business of wrestling.

The Steinhorst and Wery names have long been associated with the sport in Kewaunee County, a calling Steinhorst had put aside until last year. Now, she is blazing her own path after qualifying for her first sectional meet last weekend with a second-place finish.

Being a girl and a lightweight does not always provide a consistent number of matches throughout the year, leading Steinhorst to find other ways to gain the experience needed to be successful.

As Steinhorst prepares to continue her postseason journey this weekend — with a chance to wrestle under the Kohl Center lights at the WIAA Individual State Tournament next month — she said she is happy to see her hard work paying off.

Steinhorst joins teammates Evelyn Lange and Kiley Georgel, along with Kewaunee’s Arianna Niemojuski, at the Waupaca Sectional on Friday. Competition begins at 5 p.m.

You can listen to the full interview as part of this week’s Kewaunee County Wrestling Podcast, brought to you by Total Dairy Service, here.

Spartans drop regular season finale on 104.1 WRLU

Foul trouble proved too much for Luxemburg Casco to handle, as the aspartame dropped its regular season finale to Oconto Falls 48-41 as heard on 104.1 WRLU.

Luxemburg Casco honored their seniors before warm ups got underway, and provided a special moment for one of the players.  After allowing Oconto Falls to win the opening tip and score, injured Spartans guard Brianna Bray was able to cap off her playing career with a basket and was embraced by her teammates as she was subbed out of the game.  The two teams seesawed through much of the first half, as the two teams matched baskets for much of the half.  Alana Mrotek hit a three at the halftime buzzer to give the Spartans a 22-16 advantage into the break.

LC scored the opening 4 points of the second half, building the lead up to 10, before Oconto Falls was able to dig in and claw back into the contest. A combination of turnovers and fouls allowed the Panthers to sneak back into the game, ultimately taking the lead.  LC was able to weather the storm initially, but eventually this combination proved to be too much. Panthers guard Riley Shallow scored 20 second half points to lead the comeback, with 12 coming from the free throw line.

Shallow led all scorers with a game high 24 points. Alana Mrotek led the Spartans with 10.

Luxemburg Casco will have a week off, as it prepares for its regional semi final matchup against Plymouth next Friday.  We will carry that game on 104.1 WRLU.

Spartans boys travel to battle Panthers

The Luxemburg-Casco boys basketball team looks to continue their hot stretch Friday night when they travel to Oconto Falls to take on the Panthers.

The Spartans are 4-1 in their last five games with a loss to #2 Freedom their lone blemish. In their last game, the Spartans outscored Clintonville by double figures in both halves of a 60-39 win. Jacob Coisman led the way with 12 points while Tatem Klaubauf added 11 points and Ethan Ropson chipped in 10 points as the Spartans knocked down seven shots from deep in the game.

The Panthers are 3-2 over their last five games, including a 77-66 lost to Little Chute their last time out. Jameson Beaman paces the team with 16.3 ppg while Jj Pytleski averages 14.0 ppg and a team-high 6.3 rpg.

Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.

Oconto Falls lost its last matchup, a 61-49 loss at the hands of Little Chute.  Rylie Shallow leads the Panthers in scoring, averaging 17.0 points per game, but was held to 9 points in the first matchup between Luxemburg Casco and Oconto Falls.

Spartans wrestling sends two to state

Luxemburg-Casco will have two wrestlers traveling to the Kohl Center in two weeks after finishing in the top two at Saturday's Green Bay Preble sectional.

Spartans trio advance to girls wrestling sectionals

All three members of the Luxemburg-Casco girls wrestling team extended their season at least another week on Friday night with second-place finishes in the Wrightstown Regional.

Jakayla Steinhorst and Evelyn Lange advanced after dropping the championship match due to the rule against beating their wrestleback opponent earlier in the tournament. Kiley Georgel rebounded from getting pinned late in the championship match with a pin midway through the second period against Ashwaubenon's Elmyrah Komanekin.

The Luxemburg-Casco girls wrestling team is preparing for the WIAA regional tournament at Wrightstown on Friday. The Spartans will compete against wrestlers from Appleton North, Ashwaubenon, De Pere, Freedom, Green Bay Preble, Notre Dame Academy, Seymour, West De Pere and Wrightstown.

Nearly claiming gold at 100 pounds was Jakayla Stienhorst, who pinned three of her first four opponents before falling in the championship round.

Georgel, Lange lead Luxemburg-Casco girls wrestling into the future

For nearly as long as girls wrestling has existed in the WIAA, Luxemburg-Casco’s Kiley Georgel and Evelyn Lange have been a part of it.

The senior duo is embarking on its final run toward Madison on Friday, when Luxemburg-Casco competes in the WIAA regional tournament.

Just five years ago, the WIAA Girls State Wrestling Tournament was brand new and hosted at the La Crosse Center, culminating a season in which 452 girls participated.

This year, more than 1,800 girls are vying for a spot in the state tournament, competing under the same Kohl Center lights the boys have enjoyed since the tournament moved there in 1998.

During last month’s winter sports pep rally at the Rendezvous of Luxemburg, Georgel joked that Lange was the trailblazer for the Spartans’ girls wrestling program.

Lange is proud to have that role, and even though she wishes girls wrestling would grow faster in the region, she has enjoyed the journey leading up to what could be her final matches.

Georgel is looking to place for a third time at the state wrestling tournament after finishing just one win away from a state title a year ago. She said she has her eyes on the top of the podium this season.

Head coach Chas Treml said girls have been part of the school’s wrestling program before, but he believes Lange and Georgel are true trailblazers for younger athletes who may join the sport in the future.

Both Lange and Georgel encourage more girls to follow in their footsteps, commenting on the strong bonds they have made on the team and at various tournaments along the way.

The Wrightstown Regional also includes Appleton North, Ashwaubenon, De Pere, Freedom, Green Bay Preble, Notre Dame Academy, Seymour, West De Pere and Wrightstown. The first matches begin at 5 p.m.

Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.

Spartans boys cruise past Wildcats

The Luxemburg-Casco boys basketball team used a big halftime lead to its advantage as it ran past Green Bay West for a 69-47 win Monday night at home.

The Spartans jumped out to a 40-19 lead at the break and were able to extend that advantage by the slimmest of margins in the second half, outscoring the Wildcats 29-28.

The Spartans will face a tall road task Thursday when they head south to face second-ranked Freedom for a 7 p.m. tip.

Spartans boys look to tame Wildcats at home

After squeaking past Denmark on Friday, the Luxemburg-Casco boys basketball team goes back to work Monday at home against Green Bay West.

The Spartans used a strong second half to rally for their sixth straight win, a 64-57 victory over the Vikings. Bryce Piesler led the way with 14 points, while Eli Derenne added 12. Jacob Coisman and Tatem Klaubauf each scored 10.

The Wildcats are winless in 17 games this season, most recently falling to New London 98-64. They have allowed at least 90 points in six games, including a 104-59 loss to Xavier in the opener. Alston Metoxen leads Green Bay West with 19.6 points per game.

Tipoff is set for 7 p.m.

She was nearly joined at the top of the podium by 100 pounder Jakayla Steinhorst, who pinned three of her first four opponents before losing in the championship match. Evelyn Lange took fourth place after opening the tournament with three straight wins.

Spartans rally leads to sixth straight win on 104.1 WRLU

A slow start to the game was not enough to derail Luxemburg Casco, as the Spartans used a strong second half to rally for its sixth straight win, a 64-57 victory over the Denmark Vikings.

Denmark started the game red hot from the floor, jumping out to an 18-5 lead before the Spartans called a timeout to try to calm the waters. Nolan Lemke was masterful early on, scoring 12 of those 18 points.  After the timeout though, Luxemburg Casco was able to get the offense going, with a balanced attack, and slowly but surely clawed back into the contest. Eli Derenne led the Spartans with 6 first half points, with 7 different players each getting into scoring column.  On the flip side, Lemke totaled 17 first half points, as the Vikings took a 36-26 lead into the locker room.

Out of the break, it was the Spartans who got off to the hot start.  Bryce Piesler knocked down three 3’s, leading a 13-5 run for the Spartans to inch back into the game.  With 9:45 left in regulation, Luxemburg Casco grabbed its first lead at 42-41 and didn’t look back.  The combination of clutch shooting and crucial defensive stops helped the Spartans hold off any comeback attempts from the Vikings. Tatum Klaubauf was able to ice the game, going 4 for 4 from the free throw line, as the Spartans earned the win.

Lemke led all scorers with 18 points, but Luxemburg Casco’s defense limited him to just a single point in the second half. He was joined in double figures by teammates Brayden Jeanquart who added 14 points, David Dittmer who tallied 11, and Jack Freitag with 10 points. For the victorious Spartans, Bryce Piesler’s 14 points led the way, with Eli Derenne adding 12, and both Jacob Coisman and Tatem Klaubauf each scoring 10 points.

Luxemburg Casco will look to extend the win streak to 7 on Monday when it hosts Green Bay West.

L-C sneaks away from Denmark with win

Dueling in a low-scoring affair, Luxemburg-Casco pulled out the 34-33 win over Denmark Friday. It gave the Vikings just their 3rd loss on the season and stopped their six-game win streak.

Tied at 14 through the first half, both teams knew it was going to be a defensive second half where every point mattered. The game finished that way and the difference came in the form of a free throw as the Spartans went 5-for-10 versus the Vikings 4-of-10.

Brianna Bray finished with 11 and all three Spartans three-pointers while Denmark's Allie Van Vonderen had 10 points.

L-C adds a third-straight win and will take on Wrightstown Tuesday at 7 p.m. on the road.

Luxemburg Casco will be looking for a sixth straight win, when it travels to Denmark on Friday night on 104.1 WRLU.

To earn that sixth straight win, the Spartans will have to avenge a 76-54 loss from the last time it played Denmark. The Vikings have lost two games in a row coming into Friday night’s contest, including a 65-45 loss to Little Chute on Tuesday. Nolan Lemke scored 16 in the loss, as Denmark’s leading scorer, Cade DeLarwelle has been out of action in both losses.
