Lady Spartans edge Panthers, Adams hits 1,000 scoring mark on 96.7 WBDK

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans girls’ basketball survived a frantic second-half comeback by the Oconto Falls Panthers Thursday night, prevailing 41-35 in Luxemburg.  The “senior night” crowd was treated with a last-minute victory and some history.  Needing 14 points coming into the game, senior Lauren Adams scored her 1,000 career point with 7:30 left in the second half on a free throw. Teammate Tyler Thiry scored her 1,000th point the same way earlier this month against Clintonville.

A defensive and low-scoring first half saw the Spartans slowly build a lead and took a 20-8 advantage into the locker room at halftime.  That set the stage for a rally by Oconto Falls and Adams making L-C history.

Oconto Falls used full-court pressure and was able to cut into the Spartans lead early in the second half and managed to tie the game at 35-35 with just over a minute left in the game.

After a missed shot by the Panthers that would have given them their first lead of the night, Spartan Gabby Wech hit the first of two free throws and Thiry rebounded the second one and converted the hoop with a foul to eventually give L-C a four-point lead with less than 30 seconds left to secure the victory.

Thiry led the Spartans with 18 points and Adams finished with 17.  Oconto Falls was led by Alexis Euchlide with 13 points and conference-leading rebounder Haily Peitersen scored 11 points before fouling out with eight minutes to play.

Luxemburg-Casco will now prepare to play the Pulaski Red Raiders next Tuesday at home in the WIAA State Regional tournament quarterfinal.  The game will be broadcast on 96.7 WBDK and streamed on NewRadioSportsNetwork.com starting at 6:30 pm with the pregame and tipoff at 7 pm from Luxemburg-Casco High School.

Clintonville went on a run and took a four-point lead late in the game but the Spartans were able to tie up the game and send it into overtime.

Both teams struggled from the field in the overtime with Thiry hitting a free throw to open the scoring and Clintonville managing only one field goal.  That set up the last sequence that had Thiry fouled with two seconds left in the lane.  Calmly hitting both free throws with two seconds remaining, Thiry sealed the victory.  A desperation shot by Trucker’s Lauren Zwirschitz at the buzzer missed to the left and the Spartans survived in overtime.

Thiry led Luxemburg-Casco with 22 points, hitting 11-17 free throws, and Lauren Adams added ten points.  Clintonville (7-7, 8-12 overall) was led by Zwirschitz with 16 points, but the Truckers hit only five of 12 free throws which proved costly.

The Spartans (7-7, 8-11 overall) will now travel to Little Chute to face the Mustangs on Friday night.
