Lady Spartans fall just short to Foxes on WBDK

A potential game-tying last second, desperation half-court shot fell just short as the final chapter of the old gymnasium was written Thursday night in Luxemburg as the Lady Spartans fell to the Fox Valley Lutheran Foxes 62-59.  The end of an era of Luxemburg-Casco games played in the gym known as "The Pit" was a close game throughout the first half as the Spartans rallied from a six-point deficit to tie the game 24-24 at intermission.  Both teams turned the ball over frequently and the Spartans had a hard time controlling a quicker and faster Foxes team.  The Spartans fell behind by as many as 10 points in the second half only to rally again and cut the lead to 2 points with :04 left.  After the Foxes' Madison Jacobson made a free throw, the Spartans had a chance when she missed the second one.  McKenna Gmeider's half-court heave at the buzzer came up just short brushing the net and the Foxes held on for the victory.  Fox Valley Lutheran was led by freshman Emily Jaenke who scored 17 points.  Luxemburg-Casco (4-9, 4-12 overall) were led by Taylor Thiry with 21 points and Lauren Adams who scored 15 of her 17 points in the second half to keep the Spartans close.  The Lady Spartans will now open the historic first game in the new gym next Tuesday against Clintonville.  Pregame will be at 7 pm and tip at 7:15 pm on WBDK 96.7 FM as well as streamed live on DoorKewauneeHighSchoolSports.com.

Luxemburg-Casco boys dominate Marinette

Something was in the water Tuesday as the Luxemburg-Casco boys basketball team joined Kewaunee in putting up video game numbers offensively. The Spartans lit into Marinette on the road, winning 95-53.

Luxemburg-Casco has won three in a row and the schedule says that could balloon to a lot more over the coming weeks. The only true hurdle is Friday’s game at Clintonville. The Truckers are 8-3 in the North Eastern Conference, a game ahead of the Spartans for third place in league play.

Luxemburg-Casco wrestling hosts Coleman

Two of the top teams in the state will be in Luxemburg-Casco Tuesday night as the Spartans wrestling team hosts Coleman.

The Spartans are ranked #4 in the state in Division 2 after falling to Wrightstown in a conference dual meet last week. The Cougars have held onto their #1 ranking for much of the season after winning its dual last week against Ashwaubenon, currently ranked 12th in the state by WIWrestling.com. Coleman holds a 13-6 advantage in ranked wrestlers heading into the dual, which begins at 6:30 p.m.

Spartans finish off Foxes 65-52 on WBDK

In the final boys' basketball game played in the old L-C gymnasium and broadcast on 96.7 FM WBDK, the Luxemburg-Casco Spartans pulled away late to claim a 65-52 North Eastern Conference victory over the Fox Valley Lutheran Foxes Friday night.  The first half was a see-saw affair that had the Spartans hold a narrow 32-29 lead into halftime.  The Foxes went on a run to take a 42-36 lead with 12:39 left in the second half when L-C coach Tyler Thrune took a time-out.  From that point on, the Spartans outscored the Foxes 29-10 the rest of the way.  The Spartans hit key free throws down the stretch and a harassing 1-3-1 defense that forced turnovers and held the Foxes in check for the majority of the night.  Logan Doell had a huge game with 29 points and Ryan Roblillard added 13 as the Spartans improved to 7-5 overall and 6-4 in the conference.  Fox Valley Lutheran (3-6, 4-8 overall) was led by Josiah Butler who had 16 points.  Luxemburg-Casco will now start a three-game road trip starting next Tuesday in Marinette.  The Spartans will play their first game in the new gymnasium on Thursday, February 6 against Oconto Falls.

Tigers too much for Lady Spartans

The Luxemburg-Casco Lady Spartans were overmatched Thursday night against the Wrightstown Tigers in a North Eastern Conference girls basketball game.  Wrightstown cruised to a 92-36 victory at home.  Bridget Froehlke led the Tigers with 29 points hitting eight three-pointers.  Ella Diny added 27 points and six rebounds.  The Lady Spartans will now travel to Waupaca to play the Comets on Monday night before returning home to play Fox Valley Lutheran in the last girls’ basketball game in the old gymnasium.  That game will be broadcast on 96.7 FM WBDK as well as the first game in the new gym on Tuesday, February 4 when the Lady Spartans host Clintonville.

Luxemburg-Casco Wrestling falls short against Wrightstown

In a battle of #1 vs #2, it was Luxemburg-Casco not being able to string enough victories together to top Wrightstown, losing 40-23.

The Spartans were only able to grab five victories from the 14 contested matches. On a positive note, the Spartans were able to get bonus points in those five wins with no wrestler capturing less than a major decision. Luke Shefchik, Reece Worachek, and Lucas Joniaux earned major decisions while Easton Worachek won by technical fall. Kyle Kroll captured his decision by disqualification.

Luxemburg-Casco boys break above .500

After a tough luck stretch where the Luxemburg-Casco boys basketball team dropped four of five, the Spartans got back to winning basketball Tuesday. They topped Waupaca 85-59 in one of the final varsity boys games to ever be played at the old gym.

The Spartans are in a favorable stretch where they match up against Fox Valley Lutheran, Marinette, Menasha, and Oconto Falls the next two weeks. All of those teams have losing records in league play, whether it be the North Eastern or Bay Conferences. It’s an important set of games for L-C to win because middle February is tough.

Spartans fall to Wrightstown on WBDK

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartan boys basketball kept the game Friday night with the undefeated Wrightstown Tigers close until the final eight minutes but fell 65-49 in Luxemburg.  The teams played a see-saw affair in the first half with Wrightstown going into halftime with a 29-25 lead.  The Tigers dominated the offensive boards throughout the game and outscored the Spartans from the free-throw line 19 to three.  Managing to keep the game close, the Spartans actually led in the second half but saw the Tigers turn a 44-42 lead into a 58-42 score with a 14-0 run from the seven-minute mark until late in the game.  Spartan Ryan Robillard left the game with an apparent ankle injury and L-C could not close the gap.  Logan Doell and Robillard led the Spartans with 13 points each, while Sam Haese paced the Tigers with 14.  Luxemburg-Casco (4-4, 5-5 overall) will now play Waupaca Tuesday night at home. Luxemburg-Casco boys lose heartbreaker to Freedom on WBDK

Luxemburg-Casco Spartan boys’ basketball could not hold Thursday night at home, as the Freedom Irish prevailed 54-51 in Luxemburg in a game the Spartans led for nearly the entire game.  The Spartans started fast with an 18-4 lead in the first seven minutes frustrating the cold-shooting Irish early on.  Freedom then went on a 13-0 run to get right back into the game but the Spartans finished out the half scoring the final 11 points to go up 31-20.  The second half was back-and-forth with Freedom staying within striking distance until the final three minutes.  The Irish used a pressing defense to force numerous turnovers and easy baskets to eventually take the lead in the final minute on a steal and layup by Zach Mashlan.  The Spartans had a few opportunities at the end, but Matt Cravillion’s three-pointer bounced off the back of the rim at the buzzer.  Mashlan, who started slow and still finished with 23 points, scored the final five points for the Irish to seal the victory.  Logan Doell led the Spartans with 20 points and Ryan Robillard added 15 more.  Luxemburg-Casco (3-3, 4-4 overall) will now travel to Denmark Tuesday to play the Vikings before coming back home next Friday to face the undefeated Wrightstown Tigers on 96.7 FM WBDK.  Freedom improves their record to 5-1 in the North Eastern Conference and 8-1 overall.
