Spartan girls take on Green Bay Southwest

The Luxemburg-Casco girls' basketball team will host a familiar non-conference foe Tuesday night when Green Bay Southwest comes to town. 

 

The Spartans enter the contest 0-2, falling by double figures to Kewaunee and Wrightstown which have a combined record of 4-1 on the young season. The Trojans captured their first victory before the break on Tuesday when they rode a 41-10 first half to a 67-26 win over Seymour.

 

Tip is set for 7:15 p.m.

Luxemburg-Casco girls toppled by Wrightstown

The Luxemburg-Casco Lady Spartans could not overcome an early deficit and fell to the Wrightstown Tigers 64-47 at home on Tuesday in a North Eastern Conference basketball matchup.  The Spartans played even with the Tigers in the second half scoring 30 points, but the halftime disadvantage of 34-17 was enough for the Tigers to claim the victory.  Taylor Thiry led the Spartans (0-1, 0-2 overall) with 20 points and Leah Lemke scored 19 for the victorious Tigers.  

Spartans volleyball trio unanimous selections on All-NEC squad

With a number of players getting All-Region and All-State nods, it was only a matter of time before members of the state champion Luxemburg-Casco volleyball team got their due from the Northeastern Conference.

 

Senior outside hitter Grace Holschuh, Senior setter Emma Johnson, Junior middle blocker Autumn Flynn all received unanimous first-team All-NEC honors this week. The trio also earned unanimous WVCA 1st Team All-State honors and was named to the WVCA Division 2 All-Tournament team. Johnson was named to the AVCA High School All American 3rd team. while Holschuh earned a spot as an honorable mention.

Spartans girls basketball opens season against Kewaunee

The Luxemburg-Casco girls' basketball team will face a familiar foe on Tuesday despite it not being a conference game.

 

The Spartans open against Kewaunee County opponent Kewaunee, which is coming off an undefeated run in the Packerland Conference and a 14-3 overall record. The Storm fell in the WIAA Regional Semifinal 65-36 to Wrightstown. 

 

The Spartans won six of their final 13 games to finish an even 11-11 on the season including a 9-8 North Eastern mark. 

 

Tip is set for 7:15 p.m.

Johnson, Holschuh sign volleyball NLI

Less than a week after winning their third straight state volleyball championship, two Luxemburg-Casco players made their plans to play at the next level officially known.

 

On Wednesday, Grace Holschuh and Emma Johnson signed their National Letters of Intent to play collegiate volleyball at UW-Green Bay. Both players were recently named to the AVCA Region 6 All-Region team and represented two of the three stars of their state championship-winning match against McFarland on Saturday. 

 

The Phoenix are currently 13-15 on the season and 8-8 in Horizon League play.

Spartans fall to Menasha in Level Three Playoff on 104.1 WRLU

The undefeated Luxemburg-Casco season came to an end Friday night in a WIAA Division 3 Level 3 playoff as the Menasha Bluejays defeated the Spartans 27-13.

 

# 2 seeded Menasha benefited from three L-C turnovers and converted a key onside kick in the fourth quarter to topple the #1 seeded Spartans in Luxemburg. 

 

The Bluejays opened the scoring in the first quarter on a 27-yard run by quarterback A.J. Korth to take a 7-0 lead.

 

Spartan quarterback Owen Deprez connected with Max Ronsom on an electric 57-yard pass play to pull the Spartans within one point at 7-6. as the extra point was missed.

 

The second quarter saw both teams exchange scores as Menasha running back Davontre Smith scored on a 57-yard scamper at the 11:06 mark and Spartan running back Isaac VandenBush scored on a six-yard run in the final minute of the half. 

 

After a scoreless third quarter, Menasha captured the momentum on a 6-yard pass from Korth to Mason Tanner with 8:43 left in the game.  The point-after-touchdown was missed, leaving the score at 20-13.

 

Then the key play of the game came on special teams as Menasha surprised the Spartans with an onside kick and recovered it at the L-C 46-yard line.  The Bluejays then scored on a 13-yard run by Korth to finish the scoring.  

 

The Spartans quickly drove down to the eight-yard line on some big runs by Vandenbush and a face-mask penalty, but a fumbled shotgun snap with 5:39 left sealed the victory for Menasha.

 

Luxemburg-Casco (11-1) finished the season with one of the best records in school history as they had to say goodbye to ten seniors playing their last high school football game.

 

Menasha (10-2) will now play Rice Lake in Level Four playoffs next Friday with the winner going to state.

Spartans battle Menasha in Level 3 playoff on 104.1 WRLU

The undefeated Luxemburg-Casco Spartans will look to keep their perfect record intact Friday night in a WIAA Division 3 Level 3 playoff against the Menasha Bluejays in Luxemburg. 

 

The #1 seeded Spartans (11-0) are coming off a 49-7 rout of #4 Waupaca last week, while the  #2 seeded Bluejays (9-2) beat #3 Notre Dame 43-27 last Friday at home.

 

Matt Piesler and Paul Schmitt will have the call starting at 6:30 p.m. with the pregame show and kick-off set for 7 pm on 104.1 FM WRLU.  The game audio can also be streamed on the NewRadioSportsRadioNetwork.com.

Spartans volleyball battles Reedsburg in state opener on 104.1 WRLU

The quest for a third straight state volleyball title begins on Friday when Luxemburg-Casco battles Reedsburg in a Division 2 semifinal match.

 

The Spartans are riding a 20 match winning streak to the Resch Center, which includes straight-set wins against Fox Valley Lutheran and Mosinee in the sectional round. The last time the Spartans dropped even a set was September 18th where it dropped matches against Brookfield East and Germantown and took two of three from Franklin. It was 2019 when the Spartans last dropped a best-of-five match.

 

Reedsburg makes their state tournament debut after a 27-8 season and a third-place finish in the Badger-West. It defeated River Valley and Baldwin-Woodville in the WIAA Sectional Round after toppling LaCrosse Logan and West Salem in the regional round. The winner will battle the winner of McFarland/Pewaukee on Saturday afternoon.

Lady Spartans volleyball state games on 104.1 WRLU

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartan volleyball team will look to back it three state championships in a row this weekend at the Resch Center in Green Bay.  The Spartans (40-5), the two-time defending Division 2 state champs, will play Reedsburg at 2 pm in the semi-finals.  The match will be broadcast on 104.1 WRLU and streamed on New Radio Sports Network starting with the pre-match show starting at 1:30 pm with Tyler Thrune and Tim Kowols on the call.  If the Spartans get past Reedsburg, the state final championship would be at 2:30 pm on Saturday.
