Spartans fall to Xavier on 104.1 WRLU

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans battled but could not overcome turnovers in dropping a 31-20 decision to the Xavier Hawks on Friday night.

Xavier scored on their second possession on an eight-yard run by Cole Hietpas to take a 7-0 lead.  The Spartans responded after a nice kickoff return by Tatum Klaubauf that gave them great field position, but an interception by Brenden Bruen was returned 70 yards to set up a four-yard touchdown run by Matt Potter to give the Hawks a 14-0 lead.

Luxemburg-Casco then cut the lead to 14-6 when Andrew Klass followed up a 31-yard gain with a four-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter.

In the next series, Xavier benefited from a roughing the passer penalty that extended their drive, which culminated with Potter's 29-yard touchdown run, making the score 21-6.

Xavier would add a 28-yard field goal by Ethan Bires to take a 24-6 lead into halftime.

Spartan quarterback Landon Derenne pulled L-C within 24-13 on a seven-yard run in the third quarter, but that would be as close as the Spartans would get.

The Hawks added a one-yard run by Potter in the third quarter to increase the lead to 31-13 before Derenne connected with Jacob Coisman on an exciting 65-yard touchdown pass to get the Spartans.

Turnovers were a problem for Luxemburg-Casco with three interceptions and Xavier fumbled once late in the game.

Luxemburg-Casco (0-2) will now play Denmark next Friday night in the NEC opener for both teams.  The next broadcast on 104.1 WRLU will be the Kewaunee Storm hosting the Oconto Blue Devils next Friday in the Packerland Conference opener.

Luxemburg-Casco cross country sweeps Chief K Invitational

The Luxemburg-Casco cross-country teams found themselves at the top of the podium of Thursday's Chief Kahquados Invitational hosted by Gibraltar.

The girls won their division with a score of 32 thanks to an individual title by Claire DuChateau with a 5K time of 20:16. The boys had a little more drama with their win over Mauston. Kyan Lynts led the team with a second-place finish and a 5K time of 17:25, but it was Zach Tassoul's time of 19:32 that was used the tiebreaker to earn the victory.

Hawks soar past Spartans soccer

Owen McGreevy proved to be too much for the Luxemburg-Casco soccer team as he led Xavier past the Spartans 5-0 on Thursday.

McGreevy registered a brace in the first 25 minutes of the game and made a hat trick with a goal in the 66th minute to lead the Hawks. Noah Schulist's tally in the 44th minute and Noah Arndt's goal in the 63rd minute accounted for the other goals. The Spartans' goalkeeping tandem of Quentin Massart and Carson Koller combined to make nine saves on the evening while forcing the Hawks' netminders to only stop three shots.

Spartans host Xavier on 104.1 WRLU Friday

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans hope some home cooking will help them bounce back this Friday as they take on the Xavier Hawks in non-conference football.

The Spartans (0-1) lost on the road to the Seymour Thunder 20-14 last week.  One bright spot for L-C was running back Andrew Klass rushing for 110 yards on 21 carries and two touchdowns.

Xavier (1-0) dominated the Valders Vikings 56-12 and scored six touchdowns in the first half alone to take a commanding 42-6 lead into intermission.   Matthew Potter had a huge game with 147 yards on 12 carries and scored four of the Hawk’s eight touchdowns.

L-C Coach Neil Seering challenged his squad this week to bring their “A” game against one of the top five teams ranked in the state.

The pregame is set for 6:45 p.m. on 104.1 WRLU, and kick-off is set for 7 p.m. from the Luxemburg-Casco Sports Complex. The game will also be streamed on New Radio Sports Network with Paul Schmitt and Eric Fischer on the call.

Spartans lose heartbreaker to Seymour on 104.1 WRLU

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans opened their 2024 campaign with a tough 20-14 road loss to the Seymour Thunder in non-conference action Friday night.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Spartans struck first on a 54-yard touchdown gallop by Andrew Klass with 8:39 left in the second quarter.  Jacob Waltons kicked the extra point to make it 7-0.

Seymour then scored right before halftime, driving downfield and converting on a 27-yard connection from quarterback Cayden Staffeldt to Brandon Neppl with under 30 seconds left in the half.  After an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, the Thunder converted on a two-point conversion when Staffeldt hit his brother Carson Staffeldt with a pass to make the score 8-7 Seymour at halftime.

Both teams struggled to move the ball in the third quarter, but Seymour exploded with a 47-yard run by Cayden Staffeldt on the first play of the fourth quarter to take a 14-7 lead.

Klass would score from five yards out with 7:03 left to tie up the game after Walton’s extra point.

Seymour would make some big plays down the stretch and scored on a five-yard run by Xavier Salzman with just 36.2 seconds left to make the score 20-14.

Luxemburg-Casco had one more chance when a 44-yard pass from Landon Derenne to Mason Trimberger set the Spartans up inside the Thunder's 15-yard line with just 10 seconds to play.

After two incompletions, Derenne hit Jacob Coisman at the five-yard line, but he was tackled short of the end zone.

The Spartans (0-1) will now battle the Xavier Hawks at home at 7 p.m. next Friday, with the pregame show starting at 7:15 p.m. with Paul Schmitt on 104.1 WRLU and streamed NewRadioSportsNetwork.com.

Spartan football opens against Seymour on 104.1 WRLU Friday

After an incredible state run last year in Division 4 football, the Luxemburg-Casco Spartans will open the 2024 campaign on the road in Seymour to take on the Thunder in non-conference action Friday night.

The Spartans, champions of the NEC, finished 12-2 last year while the Thunder of the Bay Conference were 3-7.  Falling to the Lodi Blue Devils 38-14 in the state finals last November, the Spartans will be looking to replace the 15 seniors on the roster who have graduated.

Luxemburg-Casco Head Coach Neil Seering says many of the incoming seniors will need to step up in leadership roles as the team tries to manage early season injuries.

Senior Landon Derenne will get the call at starting quarterback and senior running back Andrew Klass will get the nod in the starting backfield as the Spartans look to pull off the road win.

The season will kick off from Seymour High School  at 7 p.m. Friday with the pregame show starting at 7:15 p.m. with Paul Schmitt on 104.1 WRLU and streamed NewRadioSportsNetwork.com.

Luxemburg-Casco wrestling celebrates century mark on Saturday

A celebration a century in the making will take over the Kewaunee County Fairgrounds Exhibition Hall on Saturday when Luxemburg-Casco celebrates 100 years of wrestling.

According to its website, George Gregor ran the program from 1924 to 1949, producing one state champion along the way.  Frank Chalupa took the program's reins in 1950, compiling a 224-46-5 dual meet record thanks to coaching 68 state qualifiers, 16 state place winners, and two state champions. In 1974, Emil Kuhn only led the Spartans to even more success in his quarter century of coaching, leading the Spartans to a 318-55-2 dual meet record and Team State championships in 1992, 1994, 1996, and 1999.  Kuhn mentored 77 state qualifiers, 61 state place winners, and nine state champions under Kuhn.

The Team State dynasty picked up steam under Bob Berceau, who led the Spartans to titles in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006, 2012, and 2013. Chas Treml took the torch from his old coach, guiding the Spartans to state championships in 2018, 2023, and 2024. The support the wrestling team gets year after year was not lost on Treml earlier this year after the Luxemburg-Casco wrestling team won its most recent state championship.

Food, beverages, live music, and other activities will be a part of the celebration, which will take place on August 24th from 2 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Kewaunee County Fairgrounds.

L-C girls' golf opens fall high school sports season Thursday

The team will face off against Bonduel, Denmark, Marinette, and Oconto Falls when they tee off at 9 a.m.

The Spartans may have lost their top golfer, Bowie Bredael, to graduation, but they bring four players back for this season, including senior Marissa Annoye.
