Spartans come up just short against Denmark on 104.1 WRLU

The #8 seeded Luxemburg-Casco Spartans almost pulled off a major upset over the #1 Denmark Vikings on a hot Tuesday evening, but came up just short, 6-5 in a Division II WIAA Regional semi-final in Denmark.

Denmark scored first on a run scoring double by Rheiss Johnson in the bottom of the first inning.  Ryan Routhieaux started for the Spartans but had to leave the game briefly for an injury, when he knocked down a line shot up the middle and cut down a run at the plate.  Braeden Schley then relieved Routhieaux to get the final out of the inning.

The game was delayed over an hour between innings after a scary incident. The home plate umpire collapsed on the field but appeared to respond to treatment after 15 minutes before being transported to a medical center for observation and evaluation.  Another official was reached and arrived about 45 minutes later for the game to resume.

Denmark added a run in the third inning to take a 2-0 lead before the Spartans mounted a comeback.

Routhieaux, who re-entered the game in centerfield, hit a two-run double in the top of the fifth inning.  After the Spartans loaded the bases, Max Thayse hit a bases clearing triple to right field to give L-C a 5-2 lead.

That lead held until the bottom of the sixth inning when the Vikings scored three runs to tie the game at 5-5 with the help of two hit batters and a costly error.

Denmark won the game on a long single that hit the gap in left field by John Wertel in the ninth inning that scored Eli Kapinos from second base.

Braedon Schley took the hard-luck loss giving up four runs in 5.2 innings, while Jaycob Ditmer was the winning pitcher, coming in relief of Lucas Miller for the final two innings.

Denmark (24-2) now will host #5 Wrightstown Wednesday afternoon in the regional championship.

Luxemburg-Casco ends the season at 11-15 overall and 8-8 in the NEC.

Spartans look to upset Denmark in Regionals on 104.1 WRLU

The #8 seeded Luxemburg-Casco Spartans look to avenge two regular season losses to #1 Denmark Vikings on Tuesday when they face the NEC champs in a Division II WIAA Regional semi-final baseball game.

The Spartans (11-15) survived an extra-inning opening round matchup with the Seymour Thunder last Thursday in Luxemburg, coming away with a 5-4 win in eight innings on Braeden Schley’s suicide squeeze bunt.

Denmark (24-2) who beat L-C 7-1 at home and 6-1 in Luxemburg earlier this season, are looking to return to the State Tournament to defend their back-to-back Division II championships.

The winner will play either #4 Clintonville or #5 Wrightstown in the regional championship on Wednesday.

Tuesday’s game will be broadcast on 104.1 WRLU beginning at 4:45 p.m. the pregame. with the first pitch scheduled for 5:00 p.m. from Denmark High School.  The game will also be streamed on New Radio Sports Network with Paul Schmitt and Reece Robillard on the call.

Walk-off win sets Spartans' rematch against champs in regionals

The Luxemburg-Casco baseball needed an extra frame to punch their ticket to the regional semifinal against Denmark Thursday night, beating Seymour 5-4 innings.

The Spartans scored first in the second inning on a Garrett Simonar RBI single and added two more in the sixth inning thanks to a pair of sacrifices.

The 3-0 lead proved to be not enough as the Thunder scored four runs in the top of the seventh to put the pressure on the host Spartans. One of the Thunder's seven errors in the game led to the Spartans extending the game in the seventh before a squeeze bunt by Braeden Schley drove in the winning run.

The Spartans will now face the defending state champion Denmark Vikings on the road on Tuesday. The NEW Radio Sports Network will provide coverage of the game with Paul Schmitt on the call on 104.1 WRLU.

Goalkeeper scores in L-C's 2-1 loss to Xavier

Spartan softball season ends with loss to Marines on 104.1 WRLU

The #1 seeded Luxemburg-Casco girls softball team saw their season end abruptly Thursday afternoon as the #4 Marinette Marines upset the Spartans 5-2 in the Division II regional final in Luxemburg.

The Spartans scored first on an RBI single by Josie Dorner in the fourth inning after both pitchers Savannah Jandrin and Wynn Erdman effectively and efficiently shut down the opposing offenses.

Marinette took control of the game by scoring four runs on five hits in the top of fifth inning, coming up with clutch two out hits to score the final three runs.

Erdman picked up the win by going the distance and holding the potent L-C attack to just two runs on five hits while striking out nine.

Jandrin took the loss for the Spartans giving up five runs on eight hits while striking out six.

Luxemburg-Casco ends the season with a 20-3 record while Marinette (14-9) will now face Freedom in a Sectional Semi-Final in the WIAA Division 2 tournament next Tuesday.

In Tuesday's match against Sturgeon Bay, Tabi Lemens made 12 saves while Emi Kohn scored the lone goal for the Spartans.

Xavier is on their own four-game point streak, but their tide of success has been more fruitful, going 3-0-1. That includes outscoring New London and Shawano by a 16-1 margin over the last two games.

Thursday's game begins at 6:30 p.m. at the Luxemburg-Casco Sports Complex.

Luxemburg-Casco soccer welcomes Peshtigo

With the tournament field now set, the Luxemburg-Casco girls' soccer team will do what needs to do to tune up for its opening-round matchup against Marinette with a fixture against Peshtigo on Monday.

The Spartans are starting to turn things around after a three-game losing skid with a two-match point streak, going 1-0-1 during that stretch. They forced a 0-0 draw in their last match against Fox Valley Lutheran, which is challenging Marinette for the top of the NEC table.

The Bulldogs have played almost exactly .500 ball since April 25th, going 3-3-1 in their last seven matches. They lost 2-1 to Sturgeon Bay in their last match a couple of weeks after playing to a 3-3 draw against them. The Spartans will face Sturgeon Bay later this week.

Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m.

Spartan baseball wins slugfest over Clintonville

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans outlasted the Clintonville Truckers Thursday evening with an ugly 12-9 win at Fred Yagodinski Field in North Eastern Conference baseball.

Both teams combined for 13 errors contributing to 15 unearned runs to be scored.  The three-hour game started out with 12 combined runs scored in the first inning, with the Spartans able to overcome a big seven run deficit right away and cut the lead to 7-5 score after one inning.

Ryan Routhieaux got the win for the Spartans who finished the NEC with a 9-9 record and will now get ready for tournament time.  #8 seeded Luxemburg-Casco will host #9 Seymour next Thursday with the winner taking on the #1 seeded Denmark Vikings on May 30th.

Bredael-Schmidt out as Spartans girls' basketball coach

A new coach will be at the helm of the Luxemburg-Casco girls' basketball team next season.

Taylor Bredael-Schmidt announced on social media earlier this week that her contract had not been renewed. In her statement, she expressed sadness that she would not be able to reach her goal of rebuilding the program's championship culture.

Bredael-Schmidt was 38-58 during her four-year tenure with the Spartans, rebounding from a 4-19 mark in her first year to three straight years of at least 11 wins.

Spartans soccer secure draw against Foxes

The Luxemburg-Casco soccer team challenged the top of the NEC table on Thursday, ending their match with Fox Valley Lutheran in a 0-0 draw.

The Spartans were able to force the Foxes to drop a point since a 2-2 draw earlier this month against Xavier and kept them scoreless for the first time since a 2-0 loss to Green Bay Preble on May 5th.

The Spartans will make their way through the Packerland Conference again next week with matches against Peshtigo on Monday and Sturgeon Bay on Tuesday.

Spartans top Winneconne on 104.1 WRLU

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans defeated the Winneconne Wolves 8-3 Thursday afternoon in non-conference action that saw both teams battling the severe windy conditions.

The Spartans jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first two innings, taking advantage of Winnconne's starting pitcher Eden Youngbauer who had control issues, especially early on.  Benefiting from four walks and a hit batter, L-C scored five runs in the first inning with the aid of only two hits.

Winneconne would close within 7-3 by picking up three runs in the top of the fifth inning, but the Spartans were able to close out the game by picking up an insurance run in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single by Josie Dorner.

Savannah Jandrin pitched the first three innings and returned to pitch the sixth inning to pick up the win.  Senior Amanda Fameree came in to get the final out on a fly ball to left field to end the game.

Jillina Jorgenson scored twice and knocked in two runs and Rylen Kaminski had two RBIs as well to lead the Spartan attack that finished with seven hits.

Winneconne (14-10) will now play Port Washington next Tuesday in the WIAA tournament.

The #1 Spartans (19-2), who won the NEC championship last week, will now play #8 Fox Valley Lutheran next Tuesday in the WIAA Division II Regional Semi-Fiinal in Luxemburg.

L-C Baseball looks to snag win from Clintonville

After falling to the same team on Tuesday, the Luxemburg-Casco Spartans baseball team will look to bounce back against the Clintonville Truckers on Thursday.

The Spartans are on a three game losing streak entering the second matchup with the Truckers with losses to Green Bay Preble, Denmark, and Clintonville. The last time L-C lost the first game of a series was against Fox Valley Lutheran, where they bounced back and won the second game to force a split series. The Spartans are 7-14 overall and 6-10 in the North Eastern Conference, looking to improve on that before they enter the postseason.

Clintonville has been a strong contender in the NEC for the entire season, as they are 10-4 in conference play and 11-5 overall. With impressive wins over Little Chute and Wrightstown, the Truckers may find themselves trucking through the postseason and the rest of the regular season.

First pitch from Fred Yagodinski Field is set for 4:30 p.m.

Spartan soccer faces tall task in Foxes

After snapping a three game losing streak the last time they were on the pitch, the Luxemburg-Casco Spartans soccer team will look to finish their NEC slate strong against Fox Valley Lutheran on Thursday.

The Spartans took down Waupaca in their last match, winning by just one goal of a 2-1 score. L-C sits near the middle of the conference with just one last match remaining, as they have a 3-3-1 record in NEC play and are 5-8-2 overall with four matches remaining. Peshtigo, Sturgeon Bay and Xavier are the remaining teams on the schedule for the Spartans.

Fox Valley Lutheran has dominated the conference pool this season, with the only team they did not defeat being the team at the top of the standings, Marinette. Non-conference has not been kind to the Foxes however, as they are 2-6-2 against teams that are not in their conference. The Marines will be a tough test and measuring point for the Spartans.

The match is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. in Luxemburg-Casco.

Spartan softball host Winneconne on 104.1 WRLU

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans will take on the Winneconne Wolves Thursday afternoon in a non-conference game that will be a tune up for both teams as the playoff tournament begins Tuesday.

Winneconne (8-4, 14-9 overall)  finished fourth in the East Central Conference and will play Port Washington next Tuesday in the WIAA tournament.

The Spartans, who clinched the NEC championship last week, lost to New Holstein  8-6 in a non-conference game Tuesday afternoon.

Thursday’s game will be broadcast on 104.1 WRLU beginning at 4:15 p.m. the pregame. with the first pitch scheduled for 4:30 p.m.  The game will also be streamed on New Radio Sports Network with Paul Schmitt and Reece Robillard on the call.

The #1 seeded Luxemburg-Casco Spartans will then wait to see who they play next Tuesday, after #9 Xavier and #8 Fox Valley Lutheran play in the opening round of the WIAA Division 2 regional tournament.

Spartans softball tune-up for playoffs against New Holstein

The Luxemburg-Casco softball team has just a few games left before opening tournament play as a number one seed.

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans defeated the Waupaca Comets 5-1 and claimed the outright North Eastern Conference championship in the process last Thursday afternoon. The Spartans took care of business early with four first-inning runs and cruised to the victory while benefiting from Denmark’s upset of the Freedom Irish 5-0 to clinch the conference title.

Their opponent, New Holstein, is tied for first place in the Eastern Wisconsin Conference and has their own impressive record of 20-2. Since losing to co-leader Chilton, they have won six straight games and have scored at least 10 runs in their previous four matchups.

The first pitch is set for 4:30 p.m.

Spartans soccer looks to dim Comets' hopes

The Luxemburg-Casco girls' soccer team will try to snap a three-game skid when they travel to Waupaca Tuesday night for an NEC affair against the Comets.

The Luxemburg-Casco soccer team was kept scoreless in Oostburg on Saturday as they lost 4-0 to their hosts and 1-0 to their rivals. Goalkeeper Tabi Lemens took the loss in both pairs but not without being challenged throughout. She stopped 15 of 19 shots from the Flying Dutchmen of Oostburg and followed it up with 17 of 18 shots against Denmark. The loss marked their second and third straight time being shut out and Lemens made 10 or more saves in a single contest. The skid follows a three-match point streak where they 2-0-1.

The Comets are 6-8-2 on the year and tied in the NEC standings with the Spartans at five points. They went 0-1-1 in their own tournament over the weekend, earning a draw against Northland Pine and losing to Winneconne 3-0. They had lost five of their previous six before that with a 9-1 victory over Clintonville their lone victory.

Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m.

Spartans fall late to Denmark 6-1 on 104.1 WRLU

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans fell to the first-place Denmark Vikings 6-1 in North Eastern Conference baseball Monday afternoon.

A scoreless pitcher's duel through four innings, turned in the top of the fifth inning as the Vikings scored three runs and added three more in the sixth inning to secure the win.

Ryan Routhieaux was the tough-luck pitcher for the Spartans as he went 4 1/3 innings and allowed only two earned runs on four hits to take the loss.

The Spartans defense struggled with four errors in the game and the L-C offense could muster only one run when Jacob DeGrave was hit-by-pitch in the sixth inning with the bases loaded.

Cole Jacquet hit a double and Breaden Schley added a single for the only two hits in the game for the Spartans.

Denmark (16-0, 20-2 overall) has clinched the NEC championship and remains undefeated in the conference.

The Spartans (6-9, 7-13 overall) will now play back-to-back games, away and home, with the Clintonville Truckers on Tuesdsay and Thursday this week.

The next broadcast of L-C baseball game will be the first round of the WIAA Divsion II playoffs in two weeks.  The seeding for the tournament will be done Wednesday and will determine when, where and who the Spartans will play.  That game will also be streamed on New Radio Sports Network with Paul Schmitt and Reece Robillard on the call.
