Spartans win thriller over West De Pere 21-20 on WBDK

An eight-yard touchdown pass with one second left in the game from quarterback Owen Deprez to wide receiver Jonas Otradovec led the #3 Luxemburg-Casco Spartans to a stunning 21-20 victory over the #1 West De Pere Phantoms in a Division 2 Level 2 playoff Thursday night.  The Spartans drove 65 yards in the final four minutes, converting on two fourth-down plays to pull off the upset.

The game was a roller coaster of momentum as turnovers and key plays kept both teams always within seven points.  West De Pere came out fast as running back David Vanderlogt scored on the first offensive play of the night on a 59-yard scamper to put the Phantoms up 7-0.

The Spartans responded to tie the game early in the second quarter on a 73-yard drive capped by a 4 yard run by Isaac VandenBush.  VandenBush later scored with 3:08 left in the half on a 12-yard run that gave the Spartans a 14-7 lead at intermission.

The Phantoms came out of halftime fired up and evened the score at 14-14 on a 16 yard run by Vanderlogt with 6:24 left in the third quarter.

West De Pere took the lead in the fourth quarter capitalizing on a Spartan turnover with a 28-yard halfback option pass touchdown by Vogerlogt to Joshua Wiegman but missed the critical extra point.  After the Spartans were forced to punt, the L-C defense stopped West De Pere and forced a punt with just four minutes left.  Taking over from their own 35, the Spartans then drove 65 yards converting on a fourth and nine when wide receiver Logan Doell made an acrobatic catch of a pass he tipped over his head to keep the Spartans alive.  That set the stage for the final touchdown with only :01 left that tied the game at 20-20.  Backup kicker George Herlache then split the uprights for the extra point to lift the Spartans to victory.  Luxemburg-Casco finished the storybook season 7-1 having won their last six games.

The community will still be able to show their support this Saturday as they get ready for their commute. Fans can bring their signs and voices to the high school parking lot between 10:30 and 10:45 as they board the bus. The Spartans will open tournament play at 1 p.m. Saturday.
