Recent Spartan baseball success can look back to Yagodinski

Fred Yagodinski helped build the Luxemburg-Casco baseball program to where it is today. He coached the Spartans beginning in 1968 when the program was just getting started to 1984 and then again from 1987-1999. Yagodinski led L-C to three regional championships in 1984, 1989 and 1990. The program has found even more success in recent years under Terry Jorgensen and now John Bray thanks to the work put in by Yagodinski.

Fred Yagodinski passed away on December 29th of last year.

He was the correct answer to Thursday's trivia question. Congratulations to David Pfister for answering the question correctly! David is the winner of a $25 certificate to The Rendezvous.

Luxemburg-Casco soccer falls in final regular season game

Luxemburg-Casco girls soccer played their final regular season game on Friday at Freedom. It was a tough matchup for the Spartans and they fell 4-0. Up next for L-C is the playoffs which begin on Thursday against a familiar opponent. They'll travel to conference foe Fox Valley Lutheran for a 5 PM kickoff. FVL won the only matchup between the two teams this season winning 2-0 at Luxemburg-Casco on May 16th.

Geib runs wild at sectional meet

Attendees at the WIAA State Track Meet will get to know the name Griffin Geib very well next weekend in LaCrosse.

The Luxemburg-Casco junior qualified for state in the 100 meter dash, 200 meter dash, and part of the 4 x 200m relay team also featuring Derek Chervenka, Bryce Ronsman, Colton Koss, Parker Veeser, and Jake Guth. Marhsall also qualified in the 400 meter run.

Luxemburg-Casco football will open season against New London

Luxemburg-Casco football will open their 53rd season on the gridiron at New London on Friday, August 23rd at 7 PM. The Spartans hope to start this season like they did last year. In 2018, their season began with a 14-7 victory at Denmark.  The Thursday High School Sports Question of the day was "Who did Luxemburg-Casco football beat to open up the 2018 season? The answer is Denmark?".  Cheri Kline correctly answered Denmark and wins a $25 gift certificate from the Rendezvous of Luxemburg.

Spartans softball shutout by Seymour

After cruising past Marinette earlier this week, the Luxemburg-Casco Spartans were shutout by the Seymour Thunder 7-0 in the Division 2 Regional softball final.

Two big innings doomed the Spartans, including a four-run first inning by the Thunder thanks to three run home run by Patricia Nieland.

Spartans baseball edged by Denmark

Luxemburg-Casco Spartans Varsity's bats were strong against Denmark on Thursday, but it wasn't enough as Luxemburg-Casco Spartans Varsity fell 7-6.

Noah Lindsley got things going for the Spartans with a solo home run in the first inning before Owen Deprez tacked on a run a couple batters later. With the Vikings up 4-2, the Spartans would score four runs in the top of the fifth led by a game tying two-run home run by Lance Tebon. The Vikings would score two runs in the bottom of the sixth and deal the fatal blow in extra innings when Brennan Miller stole home.

The Spartans finished the season 6-12.

Luxemburg-Casco soccer postpones, others play on

Area soccer teams are coming to the end of their season with just a couple matches remaining before playoffs begin next week.

Luxemburg-Casco was originally supposed to play Thursday afternoon against Freedom in a make-up contest from April. That game will now be played tomorrow.

Packerland Conference matchups include Sevastopol/Gibraltar hosting Sturgeon Bay at 6 p.m. and Kewaunee playing on the road against Green Bay NEW Lutheran at 4:30 p.m.

Fifth inning dooms Spartans baseball

Luxemburg-Casco saw its 5-3 lead evaporate quickly in the fifth inning as it lost to Pulaski 7-5 Monday evening.

It was a letdown for the Spartans, which came back from its own 3-0 deficit by scoring three runs in the third inning and tacking on an additional pair one inning later. Owen Deprez led the offensive attack for the Spartans getting two hits and driving in a pair. Bryce Hanmann also drove in two runs for the Spartans.

Twenty Spartans qualify for track sectionals

It will be a full bus when Luxemburg-Casco heads to their track sectional meet on Thursday.

The Spartans will send 20 qualifiers to the sectional meet, including six of its eight relay teams. Tanner Kasten and Griffin Geib each brought home multiple gold medals on the boys side while Taylor Thiry and Arabella Adams were the top performers for the girls.

Gibraltar and Sevastopol are slated to head to the Division 3 regional site hosted by Oneida Nation with the Pioneers golfing in the first wave and the Vikings putting their way through the second wave. The regional meets conclude on Wednesday with qualifiers golfing next week at sectional sites on May 28th and 29th.

L-C will have one final regular season hosting non-conference opponent Pulaski on Monday at 4:30 PM.

Then on Thursday the 23rd, the Spartans will take on a very familiar foe. It will be the start of the postseason and for the eighth consecutive year, Luxemburg-Casco will play Denmark in the playoffs. The game will be at Denmark starting at 4:30 PM. L-C lost both matchups during the season Vikings while the Spartans have won the last two postseason matchups between them.

Senior Cassie Schiltz named as finalist for WIAA Scholar Athlete Award

Cassie Schiltz, a senior at Luxemburg-Casco High School, has been selected as one of 32 finalists – 16 senior girls and 16 senior boys – to receive the 2019 WIAA Statewide Scholar Athlete Award of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association.

Chosen from among 823 seniors nominated, the 32 finalists were recognized at an awards ceremony held May 5 in Wausau. Each received a medallion and certificate, along with a plaque for display at their respective schools.

Schiltz is the seventh finalist for the WIAA Statewide Scholar Athlete Award from Luxemburg-Casco High School.  She follows: Mary Kay Destiche (1994), Dennis Delebreau (1994), Brad Shefchik (1995), Stephanie Warnke (1996), Ann Gotstein (1998) and Eric Metzler (2005).

A 5-11 guard for the L-C girls basketball team, she finished her career as the school’s all-time scoring leader with 1,980 points and was a four-time team Most Valuable Player. Schiltz has committed to play basketball at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay starting next season.

Schiltz was a four-time, first-team All-North Eastern Conference selection, and she was chosen as the conference’s Offensive Player of the Year her junior and senior years. Schiltz also was a unanimous pick to the Division 2 first team of the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), along with fourth-team all-state, as a senior.

The daughter of Dan and Mary Schiltz of Luxemburg, she earned four letters in basketball, four in volleyball and one in softball at Luxemburg-Casco.

The 32 finalists for Statewide Scholar Athlete were determined by selecting four boys and four girls – based on athletic and academic achievement – from each of four WIAA divisions (Schiltz in Division 2). More than 1,000 Scholar Athlete finalists have been recognized since the program began in 1984.

An archived version of the awards ceremony is available at www.wiaawi.org.

Schiltz also has been nominated for the girls basketball Player of the Year at the Wisconsin High School Sports Awards, which recognizes and honors the top athletic accomplishments in state high school sports. The event will be held May 8 at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center in Appleton.

Spartans baseball comeback bid comes up short

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans baseball team scored three runs in the fourth inning, but it was not enough to claw all the way back in a 6-5 loss to Little Chute.

Dylan Dahlke, Jake Cravillion and Blake Yagodinski led the way offensively for the Spartans. Dahlke had two hits and a RBI while Cravillion and Yagodinski each knocked in a pair.

Pitcher Ian Doell took the loss for the Spartans, striking out six Mustangs but allowing five runs (four earned) in almost five innings of work.

Home Again: L-C's Hallet Returns to Alma Mater as LAT

For Luxemburg-Casco native Adam Hallet, returning to L-C High School as a sports medicine professional seemed like an improbable dream.
He and his high school sweetheart wife, the former Sara Streckenbach, were living in Western Wisconsin with the thought of someday getting back to the area to be closer to family. They came back to participate in the Bellin Run — Sara as a runner and Adam as a medical volunteer — and though he wasn’t job searching, Hallet learned Bellin Health was looking to hire a Licensed Athletic Trainer at Peshtigo High School. He applied, landed the job and he and Sara, an ICU nurse, were on their way back — but L-C wasn’t a Bellin school, so Hallet figured that was as close to home as he was likely to get.
That all changed a year later when Bellin began providing L-C’s athletic training services. Again, Hallet, a 2009 L-C grad, applied — and before he knew it the former football player and wrestler was back on the same fields and in the same gyms where he’d competed back in his high school days.
“The way it’s worked out has been for the absolute best – I love it,” Hallet said. “If you would’ve asked me two years ago, I would’ve said there’s no way — but how everything has worked out, it has been just unreal. It’s been cool.”
Motivated to become an athletic trainer by the AT who helped him when he tore his ACL wrestling as a high school sophomore, Hallet loves his job and relishes the chance to make a difference in the lives of his athletes. He spends his mornings in the clinic setting and mid-afternoons until early evenings (or later evenings on event days) at the high school.
“It’s just fun – it’s something different every day,” Hallet said. “I really like the event coverage. I’m a big sports fan and I think sports bring out the best in people.”
Hallet also enjoys serving as a resource for students and families who may struggle to navigate an often-confusing healthcare landscape. And there’s nothing like the feeling of satisfaction when an athlete he’s worked with makes his or her comeback.
“I don’t know if there’s a way to describe it, when you see them return to sport and doing something they enjoy,” he said. “It’s not even the physical aspect of playing the sport, but just mentally, psychologically, returning to the team.”
The Hallets are happy to have returned to their home town, and now they’re looking forward to adding to their own team — Adam and Sara’s first child is due this month.
“It’s pretty cool,” Hallet said. “I didn’t realize how many people I grew up with stayed here. It just goes to show you how good the community is. We’re happy to be home.”

Luxemburg-Casco softball drops two in Poynette

Luxemburg-Casco got off to a strong start on Friday in the Poynette Jamboree but couldn't carry that momentum into Saturday. The Spartans dropped two games starting with a 6-5 loss to Portage. In the second game, they fell 11-3 to Whitnall. The Spartans avoided losing in the fifth inning by picking up three runs in that frame.

L-C will try to get back on track on Monday when they host Clintonville in a doubleheader. Game one is scheduled for 2 PM.

Spartan softball wins in walk-off fashion

Luxemburg-Casco softball won in walk-off fashion on Friday in a tournament at Poynette High School. The Spartans faced off with Waupun and won 4-3 when McKenzie Hanson hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning. Kendal Prevost hit a home run while Ally Dart had an RBI. Dart also pitched the whole game for the Spartans, striking out four batters.

L-C will continue in the tournament on Saturday. They'll take on Portage at 11 AM and then Whitnall at 3 PM.

Luxemburg-Casco track and field teams finish strong in Two Rivers

The Luxemburg-Casco track and field teams put up strong showings in Two Rivers on Friday. The boys finished in second place out of 10 with 111.5 team points. The girls placed 3rd with 106.5 points.

For the boys, Griffin Geib was the fastest in the 100M Dash and 200M. He also was third in the 400M while his teammate Marshall Paider was second in the event. Derek Chervenka, Parker Veeser, Bryce Ronsman, Tanner Kasten, Luke Larson, John Larson and Colton Koss also finished in the top five in other events.

For the girls, they had no winners but picked up plenty of top-five finishes. Arabella Adams in the 100M, Samantha Kahr in the 200M, Morgan Tillmann and Micaela Boucher in the 400M, Jordan Bukouricz for the 800M and Brenna Cisler in the 1600M were all runners that placed in the top five. Kate Hilbert and Hannah Derenne had strong showings in the 300M Hurdles. Taylor Thiry was fourth in the Shot Put. Hannah Derenne was tied for third in the High Jump. Brooklyn Christoph and Teddi Froelich were 4th and 5th respectively in the Pole Vault. Arabella Adams had a personal-best distance in the Long Jump placing in third.

Last second goal saves game for Spartans

You cannot cut it any closer if you are the Luxemburg-Casco girls soccer team.

A last second goal by Hannah Judkins set up by Heather Iverson gave the Spartans 1-1 decision against Denmark. Goalie Natalie Haen was peppered all evening long, saving 18 of the 19 shots she faced.

Luxemburg-Casco track and field headed to Two Rivers

Luxemburg-Casco's track and field teams are headed to Two Rivers Friday night for a meet with nine other teams. Gibraltar, Kewaunee and Sturgeon Bay are the other local teams that will be participating. The Spartans last meet was cut short by rain on Tuesday. Neil Seering's teams have had some nice results so far in the season. It shouldn't come as a surprise as Seering has been a head coach at L-C longer than any other active coach there. His first season coaching the girls track and field team was 2007. Seering took over the boys program in 2018.

Neil Seering was the answer to Thursday's trivia question.

Luxemburg-Casco shut out by Denmark

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans could not find their offense in a 10-0 loss to Denmark Thursday.

Ian Doell had a rough day on the mound as well, giving up five runs over just three innings of work.

The loss evened the Spartans record at 6-6 overall and 5-6 in Northeastern Conference play.

Early deficit downs Spartan softball

Luxemburg-Casco could not come back from a two-run first inning deficit en route to a 5-1 loss to Denmark Thursday.

After Lexi Penovich and Abby Maricque drove in runs to stake Denmark to its 2-0 lead, McKenzie Hanson cut the lead in half with one swing with a solo home run in the fourth inning. The Vikings would put the game away in seventh inning with three runs Denmark's Katie O'Brien dealing the final blow. Ally Dart took the loss for the Spartans.

High School Sports Trivia Contest Question of the Day 5-2-19

Thursday's trivia question is, "Don Schoen has the second longest active tenure as a head coach at Luxemburg-Casco. He's been coaching Spartan softball since 2009. Who has the longest active tenure of all head coaches at Luxemburg-Casco?"

You can find this question in the DoorCountyDailyNews.com E-paper. If you answer correctly through the E-paper, you have an opportunity to win a $25 certificate to The Rendezvous.

The answer will be posted at 7 AM on Friday.

Full slate of soccer games scheduled for Thursday

Area soccer fields will be busy as teams in Door and Kewaunee Counties all have games this afternoon.

Spartan baseball falls to Denmark

Luxemburg-Casco couldn't quite come back against Denmark after getting down early at home. The Vikings scored 4 runs in the first inning to take control of the game. The Spartans would outscore Denmark 5-2 the rest of the game but it wasn't enough to get the victory. The final score was 7-5. Anthony Otradovec and Blake Yagidinski each had two hits for the Spartans. Noah Lindsey took the loss.

These two teams will meet again on Thursday, this time at Denmark. The first pitch is scheduled for 4:30 PM.
