Spartans fall hard to Tritons in regionals on 104.1 WRLU

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans’ season came to an end on the road Tuesday with an 86-42 loss to the Notre Dame Tritons in Division 2 Regional quarterfinals.

The Tritons jumped out to a 13-0 lead in the first three minutes and never looked back.

Notre Dame’s 6’10” center, Andrew Rader proved to be too much for the Spartans as he scored 16 of his game-high 21 points in the first half, including three three-pointers.  The Tritons took a commanding 48-11 lead into halftime, thanks to a full-court press that caused numerous Spartan turnovers and easy transition baskets for Notre Dame.  Adam Guyette added 16 points, including one thunderous dunk.

The one bright spot for L-C was J.D. Glampe, who scored all his 11 points in one stretch during the second half.   Freshman Jacob Coisman tallied six points coming off the bench.

The Spartans finished the season at 3-22 as seniors Braeden Schley and Lance Cherovsky finished their careers walking off the court together to the bench in the final minute, greeted with hugs by teammates and the coaching staff.

Notre Dame (10-15) will now travel to West De Pere to take on the Phantoms Friday night in a regional final game.

Comets Soar Past Spartans on 104.1 WRLU

The Luxemburg Casco Spartans were on the road Friday night trying to make it a winning week but fell short against the Waupaca Comets, 75-48 as heard on 104.1 WRLU.

The contest started with both teams trading baskets early on, before the Comets went on an 18-0 run to make the score 24-5.  In that run, Comets center Riley Bechard grabbed the Waupaca High School single season rebounding record. The Spartans ended the half on a high note, as Mason Burmeister got a steal and hit a deep 3 just across half court at the buzzer to narrow the halftime deficit to 45-16.

Luxemburg Casco came out riding the momentum of the buzzer beater and wouldn’t go away, including a sequence of 3 straight 3pt shots by the Spartans to cut into the lead.  Ultimately though, the Comets remained in control and extended the lead out to close the game.

Riley Bechard paced all scorers with 24 points, nearly all of them in the paint, and Henry Mouw chipped in 20 as well for Waupaca.  For the Spartans, Lance Cherovsky scored 11 points, 9 of which came in the 2nd half.

Luxemburg Casco will find out its playoff seeding over the weekend, and wrap up the regular season on Thursday evening, hosting Fox Valley Lutheran.

Spartans out-Fox-ed in overtime

The Luxemburg-Casco girls' basketball team was shutout in overtime to fall to their NEC rivals Fox Valley Lutheran 42-37.

The Spartans had to make a comeback in the second half to force the extra frame, outscoring the Foxes 15-11 in the second half after being down 26-22 at the break.

Erin Cherovsky paced the Spartans with nine points while while three others scored at least five points. Lauren Movrich was the heartbreaker for the Foxes, scoring 17 points in their win over the Spartans.

In Division 2, #6 Luxemburg-Casco will start on the road at Watertown on February 23rd, setting up a match-up between #2 West De Pere or the winner of Slinger and West Bend West.

Luxemburg-Casco wrestling clinches state berth with milestone win

A dual meet win over one of their chief rivals carried extra weight for the Luxemburg-Casco wrestling team, and not just because it clinched their 20th Team State appearance in program history.

The Spartans' 49-20 win over fellow NEC stalwart Freedom marked the 1000th dual meet in the school's history, many of which occurred at the UW Fieldhouse, where they will compete for a state title on March 2nd. The evening started with a 56-16 win over Wittenberg-Birnamwood.

More than a half dozen of the wrestlers went 2-0 night, many of which picked up bonus points in their matches to put the meets out of reach. They were particularly strong in the lighter weights where Jake Jandrin, Carson Blohowiak, Carson Neubert, Michael Bostwick, Blake Bastien, and Caleb Delebreau won their matches in consecutive order.

Many of the wrestlers will compete for a chance at the individual state meet when they wrestle at sectionals on Saturday.

Mustangs sweep Spartans in Battle of LC's on 104.1 WRLU

Playing on back-to-back nights, fresh off a victory against Green Bay West, the Luxemburg Casco Spartans could not win back-to-back games, falling to the Little Chute Mustangs 76-55 on 104.1 WRLU on Tuesday night.

There’s an old saying in basketball that “basketball is a game of runs.” This was the formula in this rendition of the North Eastern Conference foes.  Luxemburg Casco got off to a red-hot start, as James Glampe scored the Spartans first 8 points and had 14 points in the 1st half.  Unfortunately for Luxemburg Casco, the Mustangs' defense amped up, and the lid went on the basket as Little Chute went on a  15-0 run for six and a half minutes of game action.  Little Chute went into halftime with a 46-29 lead.

The Mustangs would extend the lead up to 20 points, but Luxemburg Casco wasn’t done yet.  The Spartans would go on a run of its own, getting the deficit down to 9, at 62-53 with 8:18 left in regulation.  Little Chute called a timeout, made a mass substitution, and jumped back to a 15-point lead in the next few minutes.  Both teams would empty the benches to finish the game at a 76-55 final score.

Tyler Fischer from Little Chute lead all scorers with 22 points, tying his season high.  James Glampe led the Spartans with 22 points.

Luxemburg Casco is off until Friday, February 16th, when they will face Waupaca.

Spartans wrestling looks for 20th appearance at Team State

The Luxemburg-Casco wrestling team could make its final trip to the Division 2 Team State Tournament next month at the UW Fieldhouse with a pair of win in front of its home fans on Tuesday night.

The Spartans will face Wittenberg-Birnamwood at 6 p.m. before battling the winner of Winneconne and Freedom in the second match if they secure a victory.

Sectional qualifiers Carson Neubert, Caleb Delebreau, Max Ronsman, Jake Jandrin, Carson Blohowiak, Michael Bostwick, Blakelee Bastien, Isaac Jerabek, Trace Schoenebeck, Ezra Waege, Caleb Salentine, and Sam Schutz helped secure the regional title with 270 points and 18 total pins.

The other teams had their fair share of success as well, with Freedom (11 sectional qualifiers, 3 regional champions) Wittenberg-Birnamwood (9,3), and Winneconne (5,1) combining for 25 sectional qualifiers and seven champions.

The winner of Tuesday's team sectional will go to the Team State tournament in Madison. Because of the WIAA's Performance Factor rules, the Spartans are likely destined to moved up to Division 1 next year thanks in part to their success.

Spartans look to ride momentum against Little Chute on 104.1 WRLU

After an exhilarating win over Green Bay West on Monday night, the Luxemburg-Casco Spartans are set to travel south in the “Battle of LCs” against the Little Chute Mustangs on 104.1 WRLU on Tuesday night.

The Spartans toppled visiting Green Bay West 64-57, snapping a nearly season-long losing streak with their first win since early December.

On January 2nd, these two teams squared off in North Eastern Conference play, where Little Chute took the first matchup in a 55-42. Josh Parins exceeded his season average of 9.6 points with a 10-point performance in the loss.

Eric Fischer and Henry Annen will have the call of 104.1 WRLU and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com, with the pregame show starting at 6:45 and tipoff slated for 7 pm.

Spartans boys start week with Green Bay West matchup

The Luxemburg-Casco boys' basketball will start their week with a non-conference matchup at home against Green Bay West.

The Spartans fell to the Freedom Irish at home Thursday night 72-37. The luck of the Irish took over Luxemburg as a flurry of scoring came early from Drew Kortz, who finished the evening with 20 points. Leading scorers for Luxemburg-Casco include Braeden Schley with 8, JD Glampe with 7, and Mason Trimburger with 6.

The Wildcats have struggled to a 4-16 mark with a win against Green Bay East in its last ten games in its Silent Night matchup, its lone highlight. In their previous game, Sam Hemery scored 22 points, and two others registered 13 points in a 72-57 loss to Menasha.

The Spartans and Wildcats take to the court at 7 p.m. Monday night in Luxemburg.

Luxemburg-Casco wrestling captures Two Rivers Regional

If recent history is any indication, death, taxes, and regional championships by Luxemburg-Casco are some of the few guarantees in life.

The Spartans won the Two Rivers regional with 298 points, more than 130 points more than second place Winneconne. Twelve of its 14 wrestlers will move onto next week's sectional meet, including regional champions Carson Neubert (120), Caleb Delebreau (138), and Max Ronsman (150). The top four in each weight class move on to next week's sectional meet. As a result of their regional title, Luxemburg-Casco will wrestle in the team sectional on Tuesday in front of their home crowd. Wrestling begins that night at 6 p.m.
