High School Sports Trivia Contest Question of the day - 4-25-19

Thursday's trivia question is, "Liz Benson was the offensive star for Luxemburg-Casco soccer in the 2016 regional championship game against Fox Valley Lutheran with 2 goals. Who was the goalkeeper that kept FVL off the board in a 4-0 Spartan victory to claim their only regional title?"

You can find this question in the DoorCountyDailyNews.com E-paper. If you answer correctly through the E-paper, you have an opportunity to win a $25 certificate to The Rendezvous.

The answer will be posted at 7 AM on Friday.

L-C baseball falls to Freedom 2-1

Luxemburg-Casco hosted Freedom in conference play under the lights last night at the Luxemburg-Casco Sports Complex. The Spartans looked on as Senior Captain and Ace Ian Doell continued his dominant senior campaign allowing 0 earned runs over his 5 innings of work. Over that span of time Doell retired 8 Freedom hitters via the strikeout while Freedom only scattered 3 hits over 5 frames. This pushes Doell to a 0.55 ERA over 25 innings of work this year. Freshman Owen Deprez came in as relief for the Spartans and allowed 1 unearned run and 1 earned run as Freedom took the lead in the top of the 6th 2-1. Deprez closed out the seventh frame with a 1,2,3 inning to get the bats to the home team for one final chance. Luxemburg-Casco couldn't muster anything in the bottom of the seventh as they also went down 1,2,3. The Spartans had very little to show offensively with only two hits and one run. Those lone hits came off the bats of Senior Captain OF Noah Lindsley and Junior 1B Dylan Dahlke. Dahlke was also responsible for the only RBI in the Spartans offense as he knocked in Senior Captain Lance Tebon home on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the first.

Luxemburg-Casco will travel to Freedom for Game 2 of the series on Thursday, April 25th with opening pitch slated for 4:30 PM.

Luxemburg-Casco hosts North Eastern Conference track and field meet

L-C is now back at the .500 mark at 4-4-2. They'll travel to Freedom on Thursday for a 4:30 PM kickoff.

Luxemburg-Casco softball postponed

The weather has postponed another game for Luxemburg-Casco softball. It was snow this time but all the rain has made the softball fields not safe to play at Luxemburg-Casco. The Spartans were scheduled to play Little Chute and it will be played at a later date. Luxemburg-Casco has been rolling so far this season with a 5-1 start.

That's a much better start than L-C had in 2009 when the Spartans were only 3-3 after their first six games but ended up winning the first softball state championship in the school's history. Luxemburg-Casco defeated Monroe 4-0 in the state title game to win it all.

Thursday's trivia question asked who L-C defeated in the 2009 softball state championship game and the answer was Monroe. Congratulations to Anita Kinnard for answering the question correctly! She will win a $25 certificate to The Rendezvous.

High School Sports Trivia Contest Question of the Day 4-18-19

On the girls side, Morgan Tillmann finished first in the 400M. Brenna Cisler took home first in the 3200M. L-C won the 4x400 and 4x800 Relay Races. Taylor Thiry took first in the Shot Put. Cassie Flynn won the Triple Jump.

Spartans shut down at Seymour

Heather Dart's triple set up the Spartans' only won in the 6-1 loss to Seymour Monday. She was driven home on a McKenzie Hanson hit. The Thunder's Dinah King was a thorn in the side for the Spartans, knocking in four runs on two hits including a triple. Ally Dart took the hard loss, giving up three runs while scattering six hits.  The Spartans are back at it in Luxemburg Tuesday when they face Fox Valley Lutheran.

Luxemburg-Casco soccer gets game in against Ripon

All of Door and Kewaunee County high school sports scheduled for Saturday was postponed or canceled except for Luxemburg-Casco soccer. The Spartans went to Ripon and picked up a 1-0 victory. Heather Iverson scored on a penalty kick to supply the only goal of the game. Natalie Haen notched another shutout.

The game was originally supposed to be played on Friday but was postponed by a day because of the poor field conditions at Ripon.

The Spartans next game will be their first one in the conference when they take on Waupaca at home on Tuesday at 4:30 PM.

Luxemburg-Casco at Denmark softball rescheduled

The softball game scheduled for Thursday between Luxemburg-Casco at Denmark has been postponed to April 22nd due to the snowstorm. The Spartans are off to a hot start this season with a 4-0 record. L-C has only allowed 2 runs so far all year. The hitting hasn't been bad either. The Spartans put up 12 runs in their last game against Freedom and 9 in the game before against Waupaca.

If the early results are any indication, Luxemburg-Casco has the makings of a championship-caliber team like the Spartan teams from 2009 and 2010 that won state championships. Thursday's trivia question was about the 2010 state title game when the Spartans defeated Rice Lake 4-0. Who starred on the mound for the Spartans in the championship game going all seven innings and not allowing any runs. The correct answer was Kalli Schmelzer. Congratulations to Dave Klu who answered the question correctly. Dave is the winner of a $25 certificate to The Rendezvous in Luxemburg.

High School Sports Trivia Contest Question of the day - 4-11-19

Thursday's trivia question is, "In the 2010 softball state championship game, Luxemburg-Casco's Mariah Mleziva was the hitting star of the game going 2-4 with a triple. Who was the pitching star of the game for the Spartans going all seven innings and allowing only 2 runs and striking out 5 in L-C's 5-2 win?"

You can find this question in the DoorCountyDailyNews.com E-paper. If you answer correctly through the E-paper, you have an opportunity to win a prize.

The answer will be posted at 7 AM on Friday.

Spartan baseball wins a pair on Tuesday

Luxemburg-Casco baseball was only scheduled to play one game on Tuesday against Clintonville but Thursday's game was moved up due to the forecasted snowstorm. The Spartans took two from the Truckers in a very long day for both teams. L-C won game 1 6-0 behind a dominating performance on the mound from Ian Doell who went the distance striking out 13. Anthony Otradovec had three of the 10 hits for the Spartans including two doubles.

Game 2 was the long one. Luxemburg-Casco prevailed by a final score of 18-12 in a game that lasted over three hours. The Spartans were trailing 12-11 going to the 7th inning but put up 7 in the final frame. Blake Yagodinski pitched a scoreless 7th to get the victory.

Those two wins pushed L-C to 3-1 in the North Eastern Conference early on. The Spartans will wait a week to play again when they'll take on Fox Valley Lutheran at home with the first pitch coming at 4PM.

Arabella Adams took home first in the High Jump and Cassie Flynn won the Triple Jump.

L-C softball hits four home runs in route of Freedom

It was more of a home run derby instead of a softball game for Luxemburg-Casco on Tuesday. The Spartans hit four dingers including two from McKenzie Hanson. Those long balls helped L-C defeat Freedom 12-2. Kendal Prevost hit a three-run homer in the first inning. Ali Routhieax would also go yard. Ally Dart threw a great game on the mound allowing only two runs in five innings while striking out three. The Spartans will play another conference matchup on Thursday when they travel to Denmark for a 4:30 PM first pitch.

Natalie Haen busy in goal for the Spartans

Spartans goalkeeper Natalie Haen had a busy and productive day in goal. She made 10 saves in Luxemburg-Casco's 4-0 loss in Ashwaubenon. It was a non-conference matchup so this won't hurt the Spartans too much in the standings. L-C will play their first North Eastern Conference game on Thursday when they host Marinette.

Spartans squeeze in one, shutout Waupaca 9-0

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans softball hoped they were going to play two games, but settled for six innings in a 9-0 win over Waupaca. McKenzie Hanson, Ally Dart, Jenna Jorgensen, and Ali Routhieaux all collected two hits in the victory. In addition to driving two runs, it was Dart picking up the decision, allowing just three hits and a walk in four innings while striking out a pair. The first game was called short of seven innings due to lightning, which also canceled the second half of their doubleheader.

Spartans travel for softball doubleheader

The Luxemburg-Casco softball team will practice what baseball great Ernie Banks preached Monday when they play two against Waupaca.

The Spartans have won their first two games of the season including a 5-0 win over conference rival Marinette. The offense has not needed to do much in the early outgoing with Spartans pitching staff going scoreless in 14 innings of work.

Monday's doubleheader begins at 4 p.m.

Luxemburg-Casco and Sturgeon Bay girls soccer tie

A day after both schools lost in the opening game of the Notre Dame Quad, Luxemburg-Casco and Sturgeon Bay tied each other at two on Saturday. Starr and Fischer Beckham scored the two goals for the Clippers.

On Friday, Sturgeon Bay lost to the host school 7-1, while L-C lost a tough hard-fought game to Lakeland 1-0.

The Spartans next match will be on Tuesday at Ashwaubenon at 6:30 PM. Sturgeon Bay will play at Freedom on Tuesday at 4:30 PM.

Spartan baseball gets revenge on Marinette

Luxemburg-Casco got a little revenge on Marinette on Friday. The Marines defeated the Spartans on Tuesday but L-C took Friday's game 7-3. The Spartans were very patient at the dish taking nine walks. Noah Lindsley pitched five solid innings to pick up the win. L-C's next game is on Tuesday when they host Clintonville, first pitch at 4:30 PM.

Luxemburg-Casco to play in soccer quad at Notre Dame

The Luxemburg-Casco girls soccer team will take on Lakeland Union at Notre Dame High School Friday night. The Spartans next opponent will depend on the outcome of their own game and the game between Sturgeon Bay and Notre Dame. That game will happen on Saturday morning. L-C comes into their game Friday night with a record of 1-1-1. Their first win came in their last game against Green Bay NEW Lutheran by a final score of 3-0.

If the Spartans are able to keep improving throughout the year, they may be in line for some playoff success. The farthest L-C has ever gone was in 2016 won they won a regional championship.

Thursday's trivia question asked, "When was the only time the girls soccer team at Luxemburg-Casco won a regional championship?" The answer was 2016. Congratulations to Jenny Fameree for correctly answering the question!

Spartans shut out Marines

Five was a magic number in Luxemburg-Casco's 5-0 victory over Marinette Thursday in Northeastern Conference softball action. Pitcher Aly Dart pitched five innings of shutout ball while striking out five Marine batters in the process. The Spartans scored all five of their runs in the fifth inning, thanks to Dart and McKenzie Hanson both hit two-run singles in the decisive frame.

New Luxemburg-Casco baseball manager Ryan Brown got one milestone off his list last week when the Spartans topped Notre Dame in its opening game. The Pennsylvania native moved to the area after getting a promotion with Green Bay-based Schneider National and officially got the job last fall. Brown says the weather made it a challenge to get going this season.

The Spartans hope to get their second win of the season when they travel to Marinette for a 4:30 p.m. game.

Luxemburg-Casco looks for first goal of the season

The Luxemburg-Casco girls’ soccer team hopes a trip to Green Bay Tuesday will help open up their offense when they face NEW Lutheran. The Spartans have not scored a goal in their first two matches of the season, going 0-1-1 in the process. Monday marked the beginning the second week the Spartans were even able to get outside for workouts. Senior defender Hannah Jenkins told DoorCountyDailyNews.com at last week’s Spring Sports Preview says the cold does not make things any easier.

The Spartan’s match against the Blazers begins at 4:30 p.m.
