Spartans takes 10th at Beast of the East

Luxemburg-Casco, the defending 2024 tournament champions after going a perfect 7-0 last season, turned in another strong showing in 2025, finishing 10th out of 32 teams with a 5-2 record across the two-day event. On Friday in pool play, the Spartans picked up wins over Kaukauna (25-23, 25-15), Randolph (25-10, 25-10), and Kewaskum (25-12, 19-25, 15-10). Saturday’s bracket play saw them fall to New Berlin West (25-16, 17-25, 12-15), before bouncing back with victories over Waupaca (28-26, 26-24) and Freedom (25-16, 25-17). They closed the weekend with a hard-fought loss to Oconto Falls (25-16, 20-25, 10-15).

The Spartans were led by Alayna Deprez (167 assists, 47 digs), Aubrey Frey (86 kills, 44 digs), and Rylan Kaminski (71 digs, 12 aces).

Head coach Jeff Frey reflected on the team’s performance: “It was a good weekend. We did a lot of good things, and did some things that we need to continue to improve on. That’s what these early season tournaments are about, learning and growing as players and as a team. I like the direction we are moving in.”

Hinckley's hat trick pushes Spartans past Storm

Just a day after losing 6-0, Luxemburg-Casco leveled the score for the week with a 6-0 win over cross-county rival Kewaunee.

The Spartans did all the scoring in the first 40 minutes with Rylen Hinckley registering his three tallies between 7th and 12th minute. Owen Mears, Dylan Roberts,  and Brady Hart followed suit to double the advantage. Jay Kunesh stopped six other shots for the Storm while Carson Koller had a quiet night in the net for the Spartans with no saves.

L-C will be in action next Tuesday for a Non-Conference game at Sturgeon Bay.

Spartans soar past Hawks on 104.1 WRLU

Another fast start powered Luxemburg Casco past Xavier, as the Spartans rolled to a 35-7 win that was heard on 104.1 WRLU.

Xavier received the opening kick and strung together 3 straight plays for 1st downs, before Luxemburg Casco’s defense found its footing. Once settled in though, the Spartans dug in their heels and wound up forcing a turnover on downs. Now with the ball, a couple chunk plays courtesy of Mason Trimberger and Cam Dorner, brought the Spartans to the red zone, with a 4 yard Brayden Loritz touchdown run capping the drive.  Jacob Walton’s kick was no good, but gave L-C a 6-0 lead.  After forcing a Hawks punt, the Spartans took over from its own 20, and marched down the field, with Loritz converting a 4th and 1 run near the goal line, and then scoring on the next play on a 1 yard touchdown run.  Loritz also ran in the 2 point conversion to give the Spartans a 14-0 lead.  The Luxemburg Casco defense remained stout and forced another quick stop and punt. This time, after taking over from midfield, a 3rd and 9 wound up in the end zone, as Eli Derenne found Mason Trimberger for a 49 yard touchdown catch and run.  Walton’s next kick was good, capping off the scoring for the 1st half, with the Spartans leading 21-0.

After both teams traded punts to open the 2nd half, Luxemburg Casco got back in business offensively.  After returning a punt to the Xavier 18 yard line, Cam Dorner took the drive’s opening play to the house, for his first touchdown of the season.  The Spartans defense did their part once again, forcing another 3 and out, with Xavier forced to punt, backed up deep in its own territory. Dorner once again found the endzone, with a 28 yard touchdown on his second carry of the drive. Walton drilled another kick to put Luxemburg Casco up 35-0, activating a running clock for the remainder of the game. The Spartans defense forced one more 3 and out, before giving way to the reserves to get some key snaps with the game firmly in control.  Xavier would get on the board, as Ben Kappell took a direct snap 69 yards for a touchdown. Ethan Bires hit his PAT kick, resulting in what would be the final score, 35-7.  The Spartans ran more clock before punting, and Xavier got a couple plays off before the clock hit 0:00.

Luxemburg Casco moves to 2-0 on the season, wrapping up the nonconference season by avenging a pair of losses from last year. The Spartans will return home next week, begging North Eastern Conference play against the Denmark Vikings.

Ripon did most of their work in the opening half with three goals, three of which came off the foot of Carson Kaiser. It could have been worse as Spartans keeper Carson Koller still made 12 saves on the night. The Spartans managed just one shot on goal and it was stopped by Ripon's Gavin Dahlvig.

Spartans face first road test on 104.1 WRLU

Coming off a win in the season opener against Seymour, the Luxemburg Casco Spartans will journey to the Fox Valley for a nonconference clash with the Xavier Hawks, which will be heard on 104.1 WRLU.

In the season opener last week, the Luxemburg Casco offense got off to a fast start, scoring on its first two drives of the ball game. From there, the Spartans relied on the defense to hold off the Thunder, including a crucial interception by Mason Burmeister in the endzone to end Seymour’s final rally attempt.

Xavier will also come into Friday night’s game with a 1-0 record, having defeated the Valders Vikings in their season opener. After last week’s game, head coach Neil Seering says the Hawks will feature a very similar style of play as Seymour did in their season opener.

Join Eric Fischer on the coverage, with the pregame show starting at 6:45 with kickoff at 7pm.

Spartans volleyball challenged in splits

The Division 2 state runner-up, Luxemburg-Casco, also opened its season with a quad, but in Neenah instead, facing Appleton North, Bay Port, Notre Dame, and Neenah on Tuesday. The Spartans beat Appleton North (2-0) and Notre Dame (2-1), while dropping close matches to Bay Port (21-25, 21-25) and Neenah (25-27, 21-25).

Leading the way for the Spartans were Alayna Deprez (88 assists, 23 digs, 8 aces), Aubrey Frey (43 kills, 26 digs), Claire Schleis (22 kills), and Rylan Kaminski (28 digs).

"It was a good first night of the season," said head coach Jeff Frey. "We have a number of inexperienced players who tonight was their first varsity action, there were a ton of learning opportunities and they all grew.  We have a long ways to go and grow as a team and as individuals, and that’s exciting."

They move on to another non-conference tournament this Friday, August 29, where they’ll face Kaukauna, Randolph, and Kewauskum starting at 12:00 p.m.

Spartans golf hosts first home meet against Freedom

The Luxemburg-Casco girls golf team gets back to work right away on Monday with a home dual meet against Freedom.

The Spartans are coming off a strong first full week of their season, during which the team won once and Reese Bandow captured the top spot twice. Monday marks the first competition the team will have at its home course of Northbrook Golf Course in Luxemburg. Head coach Will Simonar says it is great to have a course like Northbrook so close and to have it as their ticket to the WIAA Sectional Meet as a regional site.

The Spartans and the Irish tee off at 1 p.m.

Outside Hitter Frey commits to Stephen F. Austin

She may only be a junior, but outside hitter Aubrey Frey already knows where she is going after her time at Luxemburg-Casco is up.

The Luxemburg-Casco volleyball team celebrated Frey's commitment to Stephen F. Austin last week ahead of the team's first matches on Tuesday. She has piled up postseason accolades her first two years as a varsity starter. She was named first team All-NEC both years and she was first team All-State in 2024 after being a second team All-State designee in 2023. Senior Rylan Kaminski was proud of her teammate unprompted during last week's Luxemburg-Casco Fall Sports Preview.

Before she concentrates on her collegiate career, Frey still has two full seasons. Her junior season officially begins on Tuesday with a quad meet in Neenah.

Spartans outlast Thunder on 104.1 WRLU

Luxemburg Casco was able to weather a furious comeback attempt by the Seymour Thunder, winning its season opener 13-6, as heard on WRLU.

The Spartans opened the game with the ball and on the first play from scrimmage, Eli Derenne hit Mason Trimberger for a 43 yard pitch and catch to flip the field.  A few plays later Brayden Loritz rushed in for a 3 yard touchdown.  The PAT attempt was no good, giving the Spartans a 6-0 lead.  After Seymour’s initial drive stalled out, resulting in a turnover on downs, Luxemburg Casco moved down the field once again.  Facing 4th and 7, Derenne connected with Trimberger once again, this time for a 27 yard touchdown.  This time, Jacob Walton’s kick was good, and gave Luxemburg Casco a 13-0 lead.

The Spartans held this lead through the first quarter, with Seymour driving down the field to end the opening quarter.  This time, the Thunder found paydirt, as Xavier Salzman found his way into the endzone. A two point conversion attempt failed, keeping the score at 13-6.   Luxemburg Casco was forced to punt on its next drive, giving the Thunder a chance to score before the half.  An initially promising drive fizzled out, as Lane Ledvina sacked Seymour quarterback Cayden Staffeldt as the clock wound down on the opening half.

The second half was a battle between the 20s as neither team was able to get an upper hand. The Spartans did force an early Seymour punt, which Calvin Henderson was able to block, giving Luxemburg Casco excellent starting field position. After converting a 4th and long early on the drive, the Spartans would end up turning the ball over on downs, ending the drive without points.  Seymour and Luxemburg Casco exchanged empty possessions, including another turnover on downs forced by the Spartans defense.

Seymour had one more shot to tie,or potentially, take the lead.  Another methodical drive led the Thunder down to the Spartans 20 yard line.  A touchdown by the Thunder was wiped out by a holding penalty, putting Seymour behind the sticks. Shortly after, 3rd and 12 quickly became 3rd and 27 after three straight pre-snap penalties, due in part to the Spartans faithful loudly supporting their team, causing miscommunication on the field.  When Seymour finally got the play off, Staffeldt hurled a ball to the endzone, which was intercepted by Mason Burmeister.  The Spartans were able to salt away the remaining clock, taking home the 13-6 win.

Coach Neil Seering joined the booth, praising his team’s effort in the win.

Luxemburg Casco hits the road next week, traveling to Xavier for a non-conference battle.  That game will also be broadcast on 104.1 WRLU.

Spartans set to open 2025 season vs Seymour on 104.1 WRLU

Luxemburg Casco will kick off the 2025 season on Friday night when it hosts the Seymour Thunder, which will be broadcast on 104.1 WRLU.

The Spartans' season came up short of a return trip to Camp Randall last season, when it lost to the Plymouth Panthers in the first round of the WIAA playoffs.  Luxemburg-Casco has a large group of returning players, especially in skill positions. On Thursday night’s Fall Sports preview, Spartans head coach Neil Seering says their leadership will be crucial to this year’s success.

Join Eric Fischer and Ramsay Thompson on the call, with the pregame show slated for 6:45 pm and kickoff at 7 pm.

Spartans golfers play conference foes Thursday

The Luxemburg-Casco golf team will play its second conference meet in three days on Thursday when it faces Denmark and Oconto Falls.

The three teams will tee off at 9 a.m. at a location TBA according to the school's website.

Despite First-Place Finish From Bandow, L-C Settles for Second

Junior Reese Bandow led the way for Luxemburg-Casco, capturing the individual title in the girls golf match Tuesday with a 46, finishing two strokes ahead of runner-up Whitney Derricks, senior from Denmark, who carded 48.

The match, played at Twin Oaks Golf Course in Denmark, proved to be a tight team battle. Denmark edged out Luxemburg-Casco for the top spot, finishing at 201, while the Spartans came in at 208, and Oconto Falls rounded out the field with 232.

Luxemburg-Casco showed strong depth as all five Spartans landed in the top 12 individually. Alongside Bandow’s first-place finish, sophomore Brielle Snowberry took fifth with a 53, sophomore Chloe Treml placed ninth with a 54, junior Avery Buresh followed in 10th at 55, and sophomore Lauren Davister rounded out the scoring group with a 12th-place finish at 61.

Denmark used consistency across its lineup to secure the team victory, placing four golfers between second and fifth along with another in 11th. That balance allowed the Vikings to hold off L-C despite Bandow’s individual title.

While Oconto Falls finished third in the team standings, several other schools were represented individually in the field but did not post full team scores, adding to the competitive depth of the match.

The Spartans will look to build on the performance, leaning on Bandow’s leadership and the contributions of their young roster as the season continues.
