Luxemburg-Casco goes for NEC wrestling tournament title

The Luxemburg-Casco wrestling team hopes to collect another tournament title on Friday when they take on the North Eastern Conference at Little Chute.

Clintonville, Denmark, Fox Valley Lutheran, Freedom, Little Chute, Marinette, Oconto Falls, Waupaca, and Wrightstown are also scheduled to participate when the tournament begins at 4:30 p.m. You can find the schedule below:

The Spartans have won several tournaments this season on their way to a number one ranking in Division 2, including the Battle on the Bay, the Bi-State Classic, and the Duffy. The rest of the conference is no slouch though, with Freedom currently ranked #3 in the state at Division 2 and ranked wrestlers dotting the other rosters.

Luxemburg-Casco coach offers alternate view of performance-factor debate for cross country

While many cross-country coaches in Wisconsin are fighting against the WIAA on its performance factor initiative, some, like Luxemburg-Casco's Collin LeGrave, are showing more patience for the process.

The WIAA's performance factor reorganizes successful teams into higher divisions depending on the success that they have at lower levels. No teams in Door and Kewaunee counties were affected by the first round of changes for the fall season, but Luxemburg-Casco wrestling coach Chas Treml seemed resigned to the fact that his team will be elevated to Division 1 if they can qualify for a third straight team state appearance when he talked to the Green Bay Press-Gazette's Scott Venci recently.

In a different interview with Venci this month, Notre Dame head cross-country coach John Gard said he received more than 100 signatures from other coaches petitioning the WIAA to change their mind about the process. Their request would classify cross country as the same category as track and field, swimming, and sports, with only one division where the performance factor initiative is not employed.  Gard calls the initiative a "war on success," telling Venci that “the kids feel like, here is what we are being told: Don’t work hard, slow down, and we’d rather have you be average than excellent.”

One of the coaches who did not sign the petition was LeGrave, who would like to see how things go next year before taking a firmer position. "Some concerns have already been addressed with boys and girls being at different sectional sites." His biggest concern is that now teams have moved out of their sectional, it will be easier to accumulate the points that could trigger a division move. I think the number of points should be increased if they plan to use the three-year period or a larger sample size than three years should be used. If not, teams that had one very successful group of athletes will be moved up a division when the group that had the success graduates, leaving the next group competing against much larger schools for a minimum of two years because of past success."

Sevastopol's Annie Kapolnek and Gibraltar's Bonnie DeGrave were also asked for their opinions on the rule, though no local teams were in danger of being moved up for their success. Approximately a dozen teams, including both of Gard's Notre Dame squads, will be changing divisions as a result of their success.

Luxemburg-Casco boys play in doubleheader vs. Marinette

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans boys' basketball will head north to face Marinette on Tuesday as they play as the opening act in a doubleheader.

The Spartans entered the second half in a 10-point hole and could not dig themselves out as they lost to Waupaca on Saturday 62-49. Lance Cherovsky and Mason Burmeister scored 13 points in the loss, with two others scoring at least seven points.

The Marines enter the matchup 2-12 on the season, trying to snap a seven-game losing streak that dates back to December 12th. That streak includes a loss to Little Chute, where four players scored at least nine points, led by Deyten Magnussen's 11 points.

The boys will play at 5:45 p.m. before the girls' game at 7 p.m. The Lady Spartans have split their last eight games including a 54-34 loss to Mishicot in its previous game. Maggie Hanmann scored 11 points, and Erin Cherovsky chipped in nine points in the loss against the Indians. They face a Marines squad that is 11-3 on the season and winners of five straight. That streak includes a 44-38 win against 2023 state participant Freedom and a 64-49 victory over its border rival Menominee (MI).

The Luxemburg-Casco girls' basketball team will open their week with a non-conference matchup when the Mishicot Indians come to town.

The Spartans took a slim one-point lead into the break and never let go in a 40-30 win over Waupaca on Friday night, outscoring the Comets 22-13 in the second half to keep the visitors at bay. A big reason for that was Brianna Bray, who scored 16 of her game-high 22 points after the break. Gabby Wech played a big role in the win as well as she added 12 points.

The Indians have split their last six games, entering the matchup with the Spartans with a 6-6 record. Julie Koeppel does a little bit of everything for the Indians, leading the team in scoring (12.6 ppg) and rebounding (6.6 rpg) and second on the team in assists.

Tip-off is set for 7:15 p.m.

L-C, Kewaunee, Southern Door meet for quad at Little Chute

Three local teams will be under one roof Thursday night when Luxemburg-Casco, Kewaunee, Southern Door, and Little Chute battle on the wrestling mats.

All three local teams are coming off tournament performances over the weekend, with Kewaunee and Southern Door traveling to Oshkosh for the On The Water Classic and Luxemburg-Casco traveling across the state for the Bi-State Classic.

Two Southern Door wrestlers made it deep into the On The Water Wrestling Classic in Oshkosh but ultimately came up empty on the weekend. Trevor Englebert and Hayden Jeanquart made it as deep as the fifth round of the consolation bracket but finished outside the extended podium finish.

Mitchell Boeder ensured the Kewaunee wrestling team garnered a podium finish during its weekend stay at the On the Water Wrestling Classic in Oshkosh. Boeder went 5-2 on the weekend, including a second-period pin of Warren Sauer (Lomira) to capture 5th place in the tournament. Mitchell VanGoethem and Kemper Robinson finished just outside the podium, seeing their days end in the fifth round of the consolation bracket.

The Luxemburg-Casco wrestling scored the fourth most points out of the 70+ team field en route to a Division 2 championship at the Bi-State Classic in LaCrosse on Saturday. Only three Division 3 teams scored more than the 247 points earned by the Spartans, beating second-place Zumbrota-Mazeppa by 42 points for the Division 2 crown. The Spartans' success was anchored by Trace Schoenebeck, who won the 190-pound weight class with a 3-2 decision against Ethan Winkelman (Hudson) in the championship match. Other place winners include Sam Schutz ( 9th, 175), Max Ronsman (6th, 150), Isaac Jerabek (12th, 144), Caleb Delebreau (5th, 138), Blakelee Bastien (5th, 132), Michael Bostwick (10th, 126), Carson Neubert (3rd, 120), and Carson Blohowiak (12th, 113).
