Spartans girls look to tame Tigers, sting cancer Thursday

The Luxemburg-Casco girls basketball team returns to NEC play on Thursday with a home date against Wrightstown.

The Spartans gave Division 1's Bay Port all it could handle in a 55-45 loss earlier in the week. Trailing 27-22 at the break, the Spartans had to rely on other players offensively in the second half as the Pirates focused their attention on Brianna Bray after she scored 18 points in the opening period . She would end her night with 19 points Sienna Blohowiak was the beneficiary of that attention, scoring all 10 of her points in the second half. Chloe Host added four points, and two other players registered a pair.

The Tigers had their two-game winning streak snapped with a 51-48 loss to Chilton on Tuesday. Led Ella Verbeten (15.6 ppg, 6.2 rpg, 2.2 apg), the Tigers are 7-9 overall with all seven wins coming in conference play.

Tip is set for 7 p.m. The game is the school's Sting Cancer game, raising important funds for local families battling cancer. According to the organization, 37 cancer patients in the district were recipients of a basket last year because of the community's generosity. Baskets include a blanket, gas, and grocery gift cards, chemo bag filled with goodies, shirt and warm hat. You can find more details about tonight's efforts below.

Spartans fall to Wrightstown on 104.1 WRLU

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans could not match Wrightstown's defensive intensity and hot shooting on Thursday night, falling to the Tigers 71-51.

The Spartans struggled early to get into their offense as Wrightstown applied heavy pressure and forced quick shots and turnovers. The Spartans were within eleven late in the first half, but the Tigers went on a late run and took a 42-18 lead into halftime, ending with a three-pointer at the buzzer by Jaeden Kittoe.

The Spartans were led by Josh Parins, who made three three-pointers and scored 11 points, and Jacob Coisman, who tallied ten points. Eli Derenne and Brayden Duescher chipped in seven apiece, but it was not enough to overcome the Tigers' attack.

Wrightstown was led by Ethan Cyra, who scored 19 points, and Aiden Humphreys, who added 18 more.  Kittoe finished with 14 points, as the Tigers drained 15 three-pointers in the game.
