Spartans baseball struck by Comets

Two innings was all it took to send the Luxemburg-Casco Spartans baseball team into the offseason with a 7-1 home loss to NEC rival Waupaca on Thursday.

The Comets scored four runs in the second inning and three runs in the fourth inning to put the Spartans in a hole they could not dig out of in the end. The Spartans made one final stand in the seventh inning that put three men on base, including a one-out RBI single from Reagan Doell. Along with Doell, Gage Delcore, Caleb Radart, Carson Blohowiak, and Hudson Billings also posted hits. Max Dolski did most of the damage for the Comets, going 2-4 with three RBI. Jacob Coisman took the loss, allowing seven runs (3 ER) on six hits while striking out four.

Spartans softball fall short against Vikings

The Luxemburg-Casco softball team fell one run short of reaching next week's sectional showdown against Fox Valley Lutheran, losing to fellow NEC rival Denmark 3-2 on Thursday in their regional title fight.

Down 1-0 in the second inning, the Spartans matched their opponents on an RBI single by Alayna Deprez. The Spartans gave that run back and then some in the top of the fifth inning when Vanny Umentum took Erin Cherovsky deep to make 3-1. The Spartans made a comeback in the seventh inning when Lauren Lindsley hit a solo shot, but they were set down in order after that to end their season.

Kacie Jorgenson, Riley Westlund, Kate Van Ess, Deprez, and Lindsley registered one hit in the loss. Cherovsky was on the tough end of the loss, allowing three runs (3 ER) on six hits while striking out two in a complete game.

Spartans swept by Mustangs on U-102.1

Two four-run innings sank the Luxemburg-Casco baseball team in both ends of its doubleheader against Little Chute on Saturday, losing game one 9-5 (11 innings) and 8-3 in game two.

In game one, the Mustangs got off to a fast start thanks to a two-run home run by Noah Faccio in the first inning and an RBI single by Rowen Schmidt in the third inning to put them up 3-0. The Spartans began to rally after that, sparked by a two-run single in the fourth inning by Caleb Radart to make it 3-2. Radart would later tie the game at three when his single drove in Landon Derenne.

Thanks to the Mustangs' Dawson Roseman and Brock Gardner and the Spartans' Riley Richards and Gavin Lax, the game would stay that way until the 10th inning. Both teams would put multiple runners on base only to come away empty-handed. Faccio would not let Lax off the hook in the 10th when he deposited a pitch over the right field fence to make it 5-3 only to see the Spartans come back against Gardner with Reagan Doell driving in two on a single. The Mustangs had one more rally in them as a double from Trevor Verhagen, a homer from Reece Joten, and a single from Faccio all drove in runs in the 11th inning to give the Mustangs the win. The rally spoiled multi-hit games from Lax, Landon Derenne, Radart, and Doell.

In game two, both teams struck in the first inning. The Spartans' Ethan Werner registered an RBI single, and the Mustangs pieced together two runs on an error and a double from Noah Faccio. The Spartans tied the game in the third inning when Werner grounded into a fielder's choice that brought home Eli Derenne.

The Mustangs struck back in the fifth inning with two runs on an RBI single from Dawson Roseman. The Spartans' Jacob Coisman got one of the runs back on a towering home run to center field in the sixth inning to make it 4-3, but the Mustangs scored four runs in the bottom of the inning to push the game out of reach. Landon Derenne had two hits in the loss.

The Spartans are back in action on Tuesday when they play their first of two games next week against Oconto Falls. They end the regular season on May 27th at Green Bay Preble.

Spartans softball blows past Storm, takes on Comets Friday

An eight-run second inning proved to be all the Luxemburg-Casco softball team would need against their country rivals on Thursday, beating Kewaunee 11-1 in six innings.

The Spartans registered four hits and used two Kewaunee errors to spark their eight-run rally. Maggie DeBaker's two-run single was the inning's biggest blow for the Spartans. The Spartans added one more before the Storm found their way to home plate in the fifth inning on a single by Breanna Riha that scored Mariah Schlies. DeBaker's second two-RBI single of the afternoon ended the game with two outs in the sixth inning.

The Spartans also received multi-hit performances from Erin Cherovsky and Rylan Kaminski, who had three hits in the game to go along with her RBI. Kate Van Ess and Baylee Wypisinski split the duties, with the latter earning the win by allowing no runs on two hits while striking out a pair. The Spartans return to action on Friday with a doubleheader against Waupaca.

The Storm registered six hits in the game by six different players, led by Riha who went 1-3 with an RBI.

The Spartans' only runs came in the third inning when Landon Derenne singled in Carson Blohowiak, and Ethan Werner did the same for Ethan Derenne. Three walks and a groundout led to the Irish's lone run in the fourth inning. Landon Derenne and Werner had two hits and one RBI in the win. Chervenka allowed one run (1 ER) and four walks to accompany his four strikeouts.

Spartans softball takes down the Irish

A pair of three-run innings helped the Luxemburg-Casco softball team leave Freedom with a 6-0 win on Tuesday.

Scoreless after three innings, the Spartans struck first in the fourth with Kate Van Ess' RBI single the frames' biggest blow. She would come though in the next inning with another RBI single as follow-up to Erin Cherovsky's RBI double and a run-scoring fly out off the bat of Riley Westlund. Van Ess ended the night as the lone Spartan with multiple hits and multiple RBI. Cherovsky certainly appreciated the run support as she earned the win, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out six.

Spartans baseball shuts out Marines

A four-spot in the first inning helped the Luxemburg-Casco baseball team cruise to a 5-0 win over Marinette on Tuesday.

Back-to-back RBI singles from Gage Delcore and Caleb Radart set the tone for the game with a Carson Blohowiak acting as the cherry on top for the the four-run frame. Delcore stole home in the third inning to cap off the scoring in the game. Landon Derenne and Jacob Coisman combined to strike out 10 Marines and scatter five hits in seven innings of work. Derenne and Delcore each had two hits while Radart led the way with two of the team's five RBI.

Bounceback week continues for Spartans softball with twin bill sweep

The Luxemburg-Casco softball team have now won five in a row after being swept by Fox Valley Lutheran following their 4-1 win over Waupun and 6-2 victory over Laconia on Saturday.

In game one, the Spartans did their heavy lifting in the third inning when they scored three times behind back-to-back extra base hits by Rylan Kaminski and Kacie Jorgenson. The two teams would exchange one run the rest of the game. Jorgenson ended her day going 3-3 with the RBI while Kate Van Ess posted two hits. Riley Westlund, Kaminski, and Emma Murphy all drove in runs in the win earned by Erin Cherovsky, who went the distance with seven strikeouts while allowing one run (1 ER) on nine hits.

In game two, the Spartans jumped out to a 4-0 lead before Laconia could respond two of their own fourth. The Spartans added two insurance runs in the seventh inning to keep the Saturday sweep alive. Jorgenson was just as effective in the second game offensively, going 4-4 with two RBI. Kaminski, Westlund, Cherovsky, Bray, Van Ess, Alayna Deprez, Lauren Lindsley, and Emma Murphy also registered hits in the second game.

Spartans baseball edges Eagles on the road

Luxemburg-Casco and Southern Door saved the drama for the final inning of their make-up tilt on Saturday with the Spartans prevailing 4-3.

The Spartans struck first in the third inning when Gavin Lax singled in a run to make it 1-0. It would stay that way until the sixth inning when Tyler Neinas hit a RBI double that drove in Braylon Berg to tie the game at one. The bats came alive for both teams in the seventh inning as the Spartans scored three times on back-to-back singles from Landon Derenne and Ethan Werner. The Eagles did not go down quietly as Jerek Valley scored on an error and Tyler Neinas singled in another one to get to within one run of the Spartans. With two on and two out, Derenne struck out Isaac Baudhuin to end the threat and the game in the same pitch.

Neinas paced the Eagles at the plate with two hits and two RBI while Baudhuin, Valley, and Mason Paye each tallied one hit. Lax earned the win on the mound, striking out 10 batters across six innings as he allowed one run (1 ER) on four hits.

Luxemburg Casco zaps Zephyrs on 104.1 WRLU

Even inning scoring outbreaks led Luxemburg Casco past St. Mary Catholic by a score of 10-0, as the Spartans mercy ruled the Zephyrs after 6 innings, as heard on 104.1 WRLU.

Luxemburg Casco’s lead off man, Eli Derrene started the game with a single and made it to third with a pair of stolen bases, but was left stranded to end the frame. After starting pitcher Noah Chervenka worked around a pair baserunners to keep the game tied at 0-0 through 1 inning.  Luxemburg Casco notched a pair of runs in the 2nd, after Gage Delcore led the inning off with an infield single, followed by a ground rule double by Caleb Radart, setting the stage for Jacob Coisman. Coisman hit a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Delcore.  Radart came around to score on a Reagan Doell RBI single. Chervenka got out of a bases loaded jam in the 3rd, for the Spartans to tack on 2 more runs in the 4th in similar fashion, Coisman knocking in a run on a sacrifice fly and Doell driving in a run, this time with a safety squeeze sacrifice bunt.

After allowing a runner into scoring position in the 5th, before ultimately closing the door on a St Mary’s rally, the Spartans came up to bat in the 6th, looking to score again.  Ethan Werner reached on an error, followed by a Delcore base hit.  Delcore stole 2nd to give the Spartans runners on 2nd and 3rd with no one out.  After Radart and Coisman were retired, the trend of LC scoring in even innings appeared to be in danger, until a wild pitch allowed Werner to score, and Doell drove in another run with a single to right field.  Carson Blohowiak worked a walk bringing Eli Derrene to the plate.  Derenne, facing a new pitcher chopped a ground ball up the first base line and off the bag, leading to a miscommunication between the  Zephyrs.  With no one paying attention, Doell came around to score all the way from 2nd.  Gavin Lax drove in Blohowiak with a line drive single, followed by a Landon Derrene triple to clear the bases.  All in all, it was a 6 run 6th inning that saw 10 Spartans come to the plate.

With the opportunity to finish the game in the 6th, Luxemburg Casco turned to Eli Derenne to finish the game, allowing a baserunner on a walk, but sealing the win on a fantastic catch by Blohowiak at 2nd base.

The win moved Luxemburg Casco to an 11-4 record on the season. Next up for the Spartans, they’ll resume North Eastern Conference action, when they travel to Freedom on Tuesday, May 13th.

The Luxemburg-Casco softball team needed a six-run rally in the seventh inning to overcome a six-error day in their 10-5 win against Wrightstown on Thursday.

The scoring came fast and furious for the Spartans with Wallace scoring twice in the first 10 minutes. Casidee Jacobson (18th minute) and Claire Vandenbush (25th) scored goals before Wallace secured the hat trick in the 29th minute. Reese Bandow registered the final goal of the period in the 34th minute. There was a lot less scoring in the second half, but Maggie Pravechek was able to complement her assist earlier in the game with a goal in the 77th minute. Emi Kuhn, Pravecheck, Diem Bonness, Kilee Barbiaux, and Monroe Schaenhofer registered assists in the win. The game could have been even more lopsided if it hadn't been for Mustangs goalkeeper Lilah McGregor, who still made 18 saves despite the lopsided score. On the opposite side of the spectrum,  Ashley Fameree and Teagan Gunderson combined for the clean sheet with no saves required.
