For the third time in four years, the Luxemburg-Casco Spartan girls’ volleyball team will be heading to state.  The Spartans swept the Oconto Blue Devils in the sectional final Saturday night 25-12, 25-20, and 25-20.

After Oconto jumped to a 5-2 lead in the first set, the Luxemburg-Casco ran off seven consecutive points to take a 9-5 lead and never was seriously challenged in winning the first set.

In set two, the Spartans scored 11 consecutive points after Oconto scored the first three points.  Oconto could not get any closer than four points and L-C closed out the scoring to claim the 25-20 set.

The Spartans came out in set three and jumped to an 11-5 lead and saw the Blue Devils close in at 21-19.  After a timeout by Coach Jeff Frey, the Spartans rolled and close out the sectional match with a 25-20 decision.  The Spartans have not lost a set this season.

Hannah Derenne had a huge match with 14 kills, five digs, and 2 aces.  Emma Johnson had a strong floor game with 33 assists and seven digs.  Kenzie Hanson chipped in nine kills and ten digs while Jillian Lynts contributed eight digs and two aces.

Luxemburg-Casco (13-0) will now wait to see who they will play in the state semi-final in Kaukauna next Saturday for the one-day state tournament.  The Spartans will play St. Croix Falls, Lakeside Lutheran, or Edgewood. The WIAA seeding will take place Sunday afternoon to decide who and what time next Saturday the Lady Spartans will play at Kaukauna High School for the Division II state semi-finals.  The match or matches will be broadcast on WBDK 96.7 FM and the NEW Radio Sports Network.

Spartans shutout Little Chute 28-0 on WBDK

https://www.facebook.com/NEWRadioSportsThe Luxemburg-Casco Spartans used a relentless defense to stun the Little Chute Mustangs Friday night 28-0 in a North Eastern Conference football game in Luxemburg.  After a sloppy first quarter that saw numerous penalties and miscues, the Spartans finally got on the board with a one-yard run by Isaac VandenBush with only 44 seconds left in the first half to take a 7-0 lead into halftime.

After stopping the Mustangs on their opening drive in the second half, The Spartans drove down and scored on a 4 yard run by Owen Deprez with 7:00 left in the third quarter.  The Spartans then put the game away on two defensive scores in the fourth quarter.  First, linebacker Logan Doell, who had a huge game with three sacks, returned an interception 29 yards for a touchdown with 7:03 left in the fourth quarter.  Then fellow linebacker Luke Brolin picked off a pass with 4:33 left and returned it 82 yards for the final touchdown.

Spartans volleyball rides runs to sectional final on 96.7 WBDK

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans volleyball were able to use big runs in each of their three sets to sweep Valders in the WIAA Sectional Semifinal Thursday night.

Up 3-2 early in the first set, the Spartans gave themselves some cushion with a 7-0 run that had the Vikings playing catch-up the rest of the evening. Getting three service aces along the way, the Spartans ended the set on a 5-0 run to take the 1-0 lead.

The second set went back and forth early on, but the Spartans took control up 6-5 with an 11-2 run to allow them to cruise to a 25-11 victory in the second set.

The Vikings battled back hard in the third set, burying the Spartans with 11-4 lead. The Spartans used two service aces and some drop shots against an aggressive Vikings defense to score 9 of the next 10 points to take the lead. The two teams traded blows until the Spartans scored 10 of the last 13 points to capture the final set 25-18.

Setter Emma Johnson was able to collect 38 assists and six kills while outside hitters Grace Holschuh (15 kills) Kenzie Hanson (10 kills, three aces) each reached double figures. Tyler Thrune and Paul Schmitt will have the call on 96.7 WBDK beginning at 6:30 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the first serve at 7 p.m. The Spartans are trying to make their third state tournament since 2017.

Spartans volleyball hopes to take next step against Valders on 96.7 WBDK

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans volleyball team hopes to get one step closer to the state tournament when they host Valders Thursday night.

The Vikings have drawn some parallels to the Spartans. Both advanced out of their regionals as the #1 seed by winning their matches in straight sets. The Spartans defeated Two Rivers 25-15, 25-12, and 25-15. The Vikings won their matches over Kiel (25-21, 25-14, 25-18) and Wrightstown (25-23, 25-15, 25-14) Valders also lost out on some opportunities to play out the entire season due to COVID-19 issues. Head coach Jeff Frey says Valders is a better team than their 10-9 record indicates.

Frey says last week's conference matches against Freedom and Fox Valley Lutheran got them ready for their upcoming sectional matchups.

You can listen to our full interview with Coach Frey on the Luxemburg-Casco Sports Central Podcast page. Tyler Thrune and Tim Kowols will have the call on the NEW Radio Sports Network and 96.7 WBDK beginning at 6:30 p.m. with the pregame show followed by first serve at 7 p.m.

Spartan fooball battles LIttle Chute Friday on WBDK

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans host the Little Chute Mustangs Friday night in a Northeastern Conference football game.  The Spartans (0-1, 3-1 overall) are coming off a 34-7 win over Seymour last Friday.  Luxemburg-Casco, having won two non-conference games in-a-row, has not played a conference game since October 2.  Little Chute (2-2, 3-2 overall) beat Hortonville 25-7 last week.  The winner Friday night will claim the “Battle of the L-Cs” trophy for 2020.   Matt Piesler and Paul Schmitt will have the call starting at 6:30 p.m. with the pregame show and kick-off set for 7 pm on 96.7FM WBDK.  The game audio can also be streamed on the NewRadioSportsRadioNetwork.com.

State volleyball venues announced

If Luxemburg-Casco is fortunate enough to get through this week, they have the list of places they could go to next narrowed down to four.

With the Resch Center ruled out for this season, the WIAA has settled on four different high school hosts for the state volleyball championships. Those four schools are Kaukauna, Little Chute, Wausau West, and Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln. The mystery remains where the Spartans could go since as of Tuesday morning the schools were not assigned a division.

Before they worry about that, the Spartans have to get through Valders this Thursday night at 7 p.m. at Luxemburg-Casco. The game will air on 96.7 WBDK beginning at 6:30 p.m. with the pregame show.

Spartans fall in shootout to Plymouth

The Luxemburg-Casco soccer team fought until the very end, but fell to Plymouth 6-5 in penalty kicks in regional final at the Luxemburg-Casco Sports Complex on Saturday night.  A scoreless match that lasted through regulation and overtime went to a shootout that finished with a game-winning save by Plymouth goalie Micah Falk.  Penalty shootout scorers from the Spartans were Derrick Davister, Johan Amador, Hayden Koss, Griffin Saldana, and Matthew Conway.  L-C goalie Garrett Zuleger had seven saves while Panther's goalie Falk had six.

Lady Spartans sweep Two Rivers for Regional Championship on WBDK

The Luxemburg Casco volleyball team rolled in all three sets Saturday night against Two Rivers to claim the Division II Regional Championship in Luxemburg.  The undefeated Spartans were never seriously challenged by the undefeated Raiders as they won 25-15, 25-12, and 25-15.

Jumping to an early 10-4 lead in the first game, the Spartans capitalized on several Raider miscues including several service errors to cruise to a ten-point margin.  Two Rivers (8-1) did take the lead 7-6 in game two but the Spartans went on a run to more than double up the Raiders with the 25-12.  The third set saw the Spartans jump on the Raiders quickly and allow some underclassmen to get playing time and close out the match.

Luxemburg-Casco was led by Emma Johnson who had 22 assists and five kills.  Grace Holschuh added seven kills while Kenzie Hanson provided six kills and 8 digs.  Jillian Lynts garnered the “Prime Time Player of the Game” with 8 digs and 2 aces.

Luxemburg-Casco (11-0) will now have to wait for the reseeding by the WIAA on Sunday to determine foe and location for sectional play next Thursday evening.   Tyler Thrune and Tim Kowols will have the broadcast on 96.7 FM WBDK and streamed on the @NewRadioSportsNetwork.  Pregame will be at 6:30 pm with first serve at 7 pm.

Luxemburg-Casco soccer kicks off postseason

Luxemburg Casco High School’s boys’ soccer team takes the field Saturday night at seven against (3) Plymouth. It will be L-C’s first contest in the WIAA tournament. Plymouth took down Denmark in the first round earlier this week, 10-0. Spartan head coach Cory Romdenne says that the score has a wow factor to it, but it was not the most surprising result. Romdenne says if Luxemburg-Casco plays their style, with no regrets, then the Spartans have a great shot at advancing. L-C received the second seed before falling into a slump. Romdenne says they’ve learned a lot about what it will take to make a deep playoff run.

Romdenne wants to see his team more aggressive in the opponent’s box. He says that games are won and lost in that crucial space on both sides of the pitch. With senior goaltender Garrett Zuleger supporting a stout back line, Romdenne likes the progression they’ve made defensively around the net. He thinks the team is capable of more in the offensive box.

Romdenne is glad to see senior striker Cody Arendt back in recent weeks and says the team’s attack is smoother with him involved, even if he does not factor into the score sheet. Griffin Saldana is another offensive weapon for the Spartans. The winner of Saturday night’s game will take on either (1) Roncalli/Two Rivers or (5) Marinette on Thursday.

Thiry clinches state cross country berth

A little mud did not slow Spencer Thiry on his way to representing Luxemburg-Casco in next week's Division 2 cross country meet.

Thiry's 17:46 on the  5K course hosted by Kettle Moraine Lutheran was good for sixth place out of 38 participating runners to punch his ticket to Colby High School next week. The team scored 83 points, 57 points behind first place Valders. Lance Cherovsky, Gabe Havel, and Michael Otradovec all broke 20 minutes for the Spartans.

Ranked fourth in state, Luxemburg-Casco (8-0, 10-0 overall) will look to defeat the Purple Raiders (7-0, 8-0 overall) from the Eastern Wisconsin Conference.  Two Rivers defeated Denmark 3-0 games in the regional semi-final on Tuesday.

Spartans roll past Thunder 34-7 on WBDK

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans routed the Seymour Thunder 34-7 Friday Night in a non-conference game at the Luxemburg-Casco Sports Complex.  The Spartans used a relentless rushing attack that Seymour could not stop all night long.

Junior running back Evan Dorner, filling in for Isaac VandenBush, had a huge game scoring three touchdowns in the first half alone as the Spartans dominated the line of scrimmage.  Dorner scored on two four-yard runs in the first quarter before adding a three-yard run late in the second quarter as L-C took a commanding 21-0 lead into halftime.

Quarterback Owen Deprez hooked up with wide receiver Ryan Routhieaux with 4:30 left in the third quarter to give the Spartans a 28-0 lead.  Deprez added a 9-yard touchdown scamper with 5:33 left in the fourth quarter to finish out the Spartans’ scoring.

The lone Thunder score came with 4:21 left in the game on quarterback Peyton VanDeHei’s one-yard sneak.

Luxemburg-Casco (0-1, 3-1 overall) will now play host to the Little Chute Mustangs in a “Battle of the L-Cs” next Friday night in a North Eastern Conference matchup.  Matt Piesler and Paul Schmitt will have the broadcast on 96.7 FM WBDK and streamed on the NewRadioSportsNetwork.  Pregame is set for 6:30 pm with kickoff at 7 pm.

Spartans cross country to keep the season alive

Three big meets in just over a week is not phasing the Luxemburg-Casco cross country team.

Both the boys and the girls teams advanced to Friday's sectional meet at Kettle Moraine Lutheran by taking second place. Spencer Thiry (17:20) and Sophia Mliezva (21:13) paced the Spartans to clinch the spots, but cross country coach Katie Waege credits the runners for doing that extra something little to push them over the edge.

The teams have not raced at Kettle Moraine Lutheran before, but even with some sneaky elevation changes Waege is not worried.

The girls will toe the line at 4:15 p.m. Friday afternoon while the boys will tackle the course at 5 p.m. If any of the runners qualify, they will learn next where their next race will be.

Spartan football battles Seymour on WBDK Friday

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans will host the Seymour Thunder in a non-conference football game Friday night at the Luxemburg-Casco Sports Complex.  The Spartans (0-1, 2-1 overall) of the North Eastern Conference are coming off a 49-14 rout of Southern Door last Friday in a non-conference matchup of old Packerland Conference rivals.  Junior running back Isaac VandenBush had a huge night rushing for nearly 200 yards and scoring six touchdowns.  Seymour (1-1, 1-3) is coming off a lopsided 34-0 loss to Plymouth last week in a non-conference game.  Matt Piesler and Paul Schmitt will have the call starting at 6:30 p.m. with the pregame show and kick-off set for 7 pm on 96.7FM WBDK.  The game audio can also be streamed on NewRadioSports.com.

Spartans await playoff foes

Luxemburg-Casco's volleyball and soccer teams will have the gift of foresight as it prepares for the WIAA playoffs.

Both squads have regionals with small numbers attached to them, giving them a bye to Saturday's final with a chance to head to sectionals with just a single win. The soccer team already knows who they will see on Saturday after Plymouth blew past Denmark 10-0 on Tuesday. The volleyball team will keep a close eye on Denmark Thursday night as they play host to Two Rivers.

Both regional finals will take place on Saturday at Luxemburg-Casco at 7 p.m.

Spartans cross country teams qualify for sectionals

The last time this season on its home cross country course proved fruitful for the Luxemburg-Casco Spartans as both squads qualified for Saturday's sectional.

The girls qualified with a second-place finish in the six-team field, four of which had enough runners to challenge for a title. The Spartans' 37 points finished behind the 25 points scored by Two Rivers despite having four of their top five runners finish in the top 10.  Sophia Mleziva edged out teammate Megan Vandermause for the top spot on the team with a time of 00:21:13.06 on the 5K course. Vandermause came in just a half-second later. The full L-C results are below with the full subsectional results available here.

Spartans tested, but prevail in volleyball championship

The Luxemburg-Casco volleyball faced their toughest test of the season on Tuesday night but still walked off the court as the newly crowned NEC champions.

The Spartans won the match 25-14, 25-23, 26-24. The team went 28 straight sets without giving up more than 20 points. Defense was key in the match with Kenzie Hanson (23), Grace Holschuh (10), Jillian Lynts (18) and Emma Johnson (14) all registering double-digit dig totals. Johnson had 38 assists on the evening while Holschuh led all Spartans with 10 kills. Kennedy Schmitz had 37 digs and Sam Kempinger scored on 12 kills for the Foxes.

The first set was even until L-C pulled away midway through. Fox Valley Lutheran pushed back to start set two, building a 13-7 lead before the Spartans roared back. Luxemburg-Casco was able to win three of the last four points for the 25-23 edge. The third set was defined by runs. Just when it looked like one side or the other was set to pull away, the score tightened again. L-C squeaked out a two-point win.

The Spartans will have a few days off before they play in the regional championship against a to-be-determined opponent. The match will be carried on the NEW Radio Sports Network.

Spartans soccer fall in tournament tune-up

Peshtigo scored two unanswered goals in the second half to put away the Spartans 3-1 at the Luxemburg-Casco Sports Complex Tuesday night.

The match between two of the region's better teams started with Ryan VanVooren scoring in the eighth minute to give the Bulldogs the early 1-0 lead. About 10 minutes later, Griffin Saldana was able to find Cody Arendt for the equalizer to tie the game at one for the Spartans. The Bulldogs were able to find the net twice in the second half, first by Johnny Conn in the 68th minute and Adam Bauman four minutes later.  Spartans goalie Garrett Zuleger and Bulldogs keeper Seth Davis each had six saves.

Head coach Cory Romdenne said the Bulldogs were an impressive team to face and he hopes the match served as good preparation and a test before the teams start their playoff run this weekend.

Spartans prepare to host subsectionals

The Luxemburg-Casco cross country will carry a slight advantage when they run in their subsectional meet on Tuesday.

The Spartans will host Chilton, Denmark, New Holstein, Two Rivers, and Valders at Luxemburg's Northbrook Country Club in two waves. Chilton, New Holstein, Two Rivers and Valders are scheduled to run at 2:15 p.m. while the Spartans and Denmark will toe the line at 3:30. Head coach Katie Waege says it should be interesting how that affects how the kids run.

Despite the quirk, Waege expects her team to still run well. Qualifiers will run in Saturday's sectional meet.

Spartans win heading into final regular season test

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans girls volleyball team could clinch the NEC volleyball championship Tuesday night after another three-set victory on Monday, this time against Freedom.

The Spartans topped the Irish 25-17, 25-18, 25-18 to improve to 9-0 on the season, continuing a trend of not allowing 20 points in a given set. Outside hitter Grace Holschuh registered 11 kills and 13 kills and middle blocker Autumn Flynn added seven kills and two blocks. Setter Emma Johnson had another strong night giving her teammates opportunities to score, collecting 36 assists and eight digs.

L-C soccer adds Peshtigo match for Tuesday

The Luxemburg-Casco soccer team has added one of the Packerland Conference's best teams to its schedule ahead of Saturday's regional final.

The Spartans will host the Peshtigo Bulldogs at the Luxemburg-Casco Sports Complex at 6 p.m. Tuesday night. The game comes after the Spartans tied Fox Valley Lutheran 1-1 on October 15th thanks to a late goal by Johan Amador. The Bulldogs won three games in a row two weekends ago and have earned the number one seed in their own regional.

Spartans volleyball look to get back on track versus Irish

The sprint of a fall season got a lot shorter for the Luxemburg-Casco volleyball team.

It will have been approximately two weeks since the Spartans last took the court for a match when they host the Freedom Irish on Monday. They have only recently been able to get back onto the court after COVID-19 concerns forced them to cancel about seven matches. The team returns to face the conference's top two teams in Freedom and Fox Valley Lutheran with the NEC title on the line. Prior to their play stoppage, the Spartans had run the table not just with matches but with sets as well. Speaking on October 8th, head coach Jeff Frey explains why his team has been having so much success this year.

First serve for Monday's match is 7 p.m.

L-C volleyball back on the court

Luxemburg-Casco High School’s varsity girls’ volleyball team returned to practice this week. They have about a week to shake the rust off following a COVID-19 quarantine period before finding out their opponent in the WIAA postseason tournament. The regional hosts will face either (2) Denmark or (3) Two Rivers at home in one week.

Spartans dominate Eagles 49-14 on WBDK

A career night for running back Isaac VandenBush led the Luxemburg-Casco Spartans to an easy victory over the Southern Door Eagles Friday night in Brussels.  VandenBush scored six touchdowns as the Spartans turned a close 21-14 game into a second-half blowout victory.

The Eagles struck first with a 17 yard run by quarterback Alex Daoust with 4:09 left in the first quarter to take a 7-0 lead.  Luxemburg-Casco responded with an electrifying 83-yard run by VandenBush to tie the game late in the first quarter.  After another Vandenbush score, the Eagles tied up the game again with 2:11 left in the half on a seven-yard pass from Doaust to Nick Baudhuin.  The Spartans then scored a crucial touchdown with only 27 seconds left in the half on a three-yard run by VandenBush.  From that point on the Spartans scored 35 unanswered points to cruise to victory.  The Spartans' first offensive play in the second half was a 60-yard touchdown strike from Owen Deprez to Ryan Routhieaux.

Luxemburg-Casco (2-1 overall) will return home to play the Seymour Thunder in a non-conference game next Friday.  Southern Door (3-1 overall) travels to Sheboygan Falls in a non-conference game next week.

The Battle of the Booster Clubs came down to the wire as Luxemburg-Casco collected $445 in donations and Southern Door came in at $420.  Luxemburg-Casco will receive a $500 bonus check from NewRadioSportNetwork and the radio stations of DoorCountyDailyNews.com as well.  Donations can still be made over the weekend online.  Moolah the Cash Cow (aka Tim Kowols) will be delivering the check to L-C next Tuesday and make a few laps around the track at the Luxemburg-Casco Sports Complex.

Spartans cross country look to run strong at conference

The Luxemburg-Casco cross country team will have one last tune-up before they host sub-sectionals on October 20th.

The conference meet will feature Clintonville, Denmark, Fox Valley Lutheran, Freedom, Little Chute
Marinette, Oconto Falls, Waupaca, and Wrightstown with the varsity boys running at 4 pm and the tentative start to girls' race scheduled for 4:40 pm at Winagamie Golf Course in Neenah. Waege says times are hard to gauge in cross country due to the differences they experience on courses. Spencer Thiry (18:34) and Megan Vandermaus (21:52) posted the fastest 5K times on the boys and girls' teams respectively at their last meet held at Northbrook Country Club in Luxemburg.

Luxemburg-Casco football cancels Friday's Freedom game.

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartan football program has decided to not play Friday night against the Freedom Irish in a Northeastern Conference home game.  Coach Neil Seering announced Wednesday evening that the team had met after practice and voted not to play Friday since only eight healthy varsity players would be able to suit up.  Seering says he was informed earlier this week that an additional six starters would miss the game due to being quarantined and concerns arose of having mostly freshman playing in the game.  Freedom was able to schedule a game this Friday with Waupaca after being informed and agreeing with the decision by Luxemburg-Casco.   The Spartans will continue to practice and hope to play next Friday with an unknown opponent.  The scheduled game against Denmark on October 16th has been already canceled due to Denmark football being in quarantine.  Luxemburg-Casco Spartan football games are broadcast on the New Radio Sports Network and 96.7 FM WBDK.
