Spartan Volleyball sweeps Oconto for sectional championship on WBDK

For the third time in four years, the Luxemburg-Casco Spartan girls’ volleyball team will be heading to state.  The Spartans swept the Oconto Blue Devils in the sectional final Saturday night 25-12, 25-20, and 25-20.

After Oconto jumped to a 5-2 lead in the first set, the Luxemburg-Casco ran off seven consecutive points to take a 9-5 lead and never was seriously challenged in winning the first set.

In set two, the Spartans scored 11 consecutive points after Oconto scored the first three points.  Oconto could not get any closer than four points and L-C closed out the scoring to claim the 25-20 set.

The Spartans came out in set three and jumped to an 11-5 lead and saw the Blue Devils close in at 21-19.  After a timeout by Coach Jeff Frey, the Spartans rolled and close out the sectional match with a 25-20 decision.  The Spartans have not lost a set this season.

Hannah Derenne had a huge match with 14 kills, five digs, and 2 aces.  Emma Johnson had a strong floor game with 33 assists and seven digs.  Kenzie Hanson chipped in nine kills and ten digs while Jillian Lynts contributed eight digs and two aces.

Luxemburg-Casco (13-0) will now wait to see who they will play in the state semi-final in Kaukauna next Saturday for the one-day state tournament.  The Spartans will play St. Croix Falls, Lakeside Lutheran, or Edgewood. The WIAA seeding will take place Sunday afternoon to decide who and what time next Saturday the Lady Spartans will play at Kaukauna High School for the Division II state semi-finals.  The match or matches will be broadcast on WBDK 96.7 FM and the NEW Radio Sports Network.
