Spartans win regional volleyball championship

The Luxemburg-Casco volleyball team added more hardware to its trophy case on Saturday night, sweeping Notre Dame Academy 3-0 to win the WIAA Regional Title.

The Spartans never allowed the Tritons to get close, dropping the sets 25-19, 25-6, 25-14. Leading the way for the Spartans were Alayna Deprez (28 assists and 13 digs), Aubrey Frey (15 kills and 18 digs), Ella Vander Velden (12 kills, ten digs, and two aces), Claire Schleis (9 kills and two aces), and Rylan Kaminski (22 digs and four aces).

Head coach Jeff Frey expressed his pride in the team after the match, saying that they played as one. "We came out ready to play tonight. It started on the defensive side of the ball. We were scrappy, and that filtered into our offense, and we just got rolling."

The Spartans are slated to face NEC rival Freedom in the sectional semi-final on Halloween. The Irish clinched their spot in the match by beating the higher seeded Fox Valley Lutheran in four sets (20-25, 25-17, 28-25, 25-17).

Spartans bit by Panthers on 104.1 WRLU

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans saw their season come to an end as the Plymouth Panthers pulled away late to claim a 49-21 victory in a Division 3 Level 1 playoff Friday night at Finke Field.

The offensive fireworks started early as the Spartans scored on their first drive on a 42-yard run by Andrew Klass with 9:23 left in the first quarter.

The Panthers tied the game up on their first possession, converting on a fourth and 13 from the Spartan 14-yard line on a pass from quarterback Augie Eigenberger to Kayden Schultz.

Plymouth then took the lead for good on an 11-yard touchdown run by running back Brett Shutter to make the score 14-7.  Shutter would score again with a 20-yard run to open the second quarter to make it 21-7.

Brayden Loritz then scored on a three-yard run with 7:30 remaining in the half.

Shutter came right back with a 51-yard touchdown run with 3:14 left in the half to make it 28-14.

Not to be outdone, Loritz hit Klass on a perfectly designed screen pass that went the distance for a 57-yard connection to make the score 28-21 with 1:45 left in the half.

The Spartans had one more opportunity to score when Jacob Chervanka intercepted an Eigenberger pass and set up L-C inside the Panther territory, but a 41-yard field goal attempt by Wyatt Bailey came up short.

The game slowed down in the third quarter as neither team could crack the scoreboard.

The Panthers put the game away in the fourth quarter as running back Devin Miller scored on runs of 14 and five yards, and also ripped the ball out of Tatum Klaubauf’s hands on a kick off returning it 25 yards for a special teams touchdown.

The #5 seeded Spartans finished 4-6 and Plymouth improved to 8-2 and will face #1 Grafton next Friday.

Spartans soccer season ends on the road

A win against Algoma in the finale was not enough to spark the offense in Luxemburg-Casco's opener in the WIAA Soccer Tournament on Thursday, losing to Ripon 3-0 on the road.

The Spartans did not get a shot on goal across 80 minutes of action, giving the Tigers' netminder Cody Kamin an uneventful clean sheet. They chased the Tigers all night long, who led 2-0 at the break and tacked on a third in the second half. Carson Kaiser registered the brace for the Tigers, which also got a goal from Ray Ellis.

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans dropped a tightly contested and hard-fought road game 7-0 to the Little Chute Mustangs Friday night in a North Eastern Conference “Battle of the L-Cs.”

Defense was the name of the game, as the Spartans overcame two turnovers early on by turning away the Mustangs offense in the red zone three times in the first half.

Little Chute did hit a 21-yard field goal in the second quarter with 2:51 left in the half, but chose to take a roughing the kick penalty to make it fourth and goal at the two-yard line.  The Spartan defense came up with the goalline stance to keep the game scoreless into halftime.

The Third quarter saw both teams miss field goal opportunities as Jackson Czarnecki missed from 32 yards out with 7:39 left in the quarter.

The Spartans drove late in the third quarter and had Wyatt Bailey attempt a 35-yard kick that bounced off the left upright and kept the score 0-0.

With 8:54 left in the fourth quarter, the Mustangs finally broke the scoreless tie with a two-yard touchdown run by Brock Gardner after a 66-yard pass connection from quarterback Cooper Effa to Reece Josten to set up the score.

Luxemburg-Casco had one more opportunity to score but came up short. The Mustangs took over and ran out the last five minutes of the game, converting on two huge third-down plays.
