The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans dropped a tightly contested and hard-fought road game 7-0 to the Little Chute Mustangs Friday night in a North Eastern Conference “Battle of the L-Cs.”
Defense was the name of the game, as the Spartans overcame two turnovers early on by turning away the Mustangs offense in the red zone three times in the first half.
Little Chute did hit a 21-yard field goal in the second quarter with 2:51 left in the half, but chose to take a roughing the kick penalty to make it fourth and goal at the two-yard line. The Spartan defense came up with the goalline stance to keep the game scoreless into halftime.
The Third quarter saw both teams miss field goal opportunities as Jackson Czarnecki missed from 32 yards out with 7:39 left in the quarter.
The Spartans drove late in the third quarter and had Wyatt Bailey attempt a 35-yard kick that bounced off the left upright and kept the score 0-0.
With 8:54 left in the fourth quarter, the Mustangs finally broke the scoreless tie with a two-yard touchdown run by Brock Gardner after a 66-yard pass connection from quarterback Cooper Effa to Reece Josten to set up the score.
Luxemburg-Casco had one more opportunity to score but came up short. The Mustangs took over and ran out the last five minutes of the game, converting on two huge third-down plays.
The Spartans (4-2, 4-4 overall) will finish the regular season with a home game against the undefeated Freedom Irish next Friday.
The pregame is set for 6:45 p.m. on 104.1 WBDK, with kick-off at 7 p.m. Paul Schmitt and Eric Fischer will have the play-by-play of the game, which will also be streamed on New Radio Sports Network.
