The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans defeated the Waupaca Comets 5-1 and claimed the outright North Eastern Conference championship in the process Thursday afternoon.
The Spartans took care of business early with four first-inning runs and cruised to the victory, while benefiting from Denmark’s upset of the Freedom Irish 5-0 clinch the conference title.
The Spartans scored two runs before the first out in the bottom of the first inning and got a clutch two-out, two-run RBI single from Kate Vaness to take a 4-0 lead.
Savannah Jandrin was efficient and effective on the mound by going the distance and only allowing one run on five hits.
The Spartans will now play two non-conference games next week against New Holstein and Winneconne ( on 104.1 WRLU) to finish out the regular season.
The #1 seeded Luxemburg-Casco will then wait to see who they play on Thursday, May 25 after #9 Xavier and #8 Fox Valley Lutheran play on Tuesday, May 23 in the opening of the WIAA Division 2 regional tournament.
The playoff pregame for the May 25th game on 104.1 WRLU will be at 4:15 p.m. with the first pitch scheduled for 4:30 p.m. The game will also be streamed on New Radio Sports Network with Paul Schmitt and Reece Robillard on the call.
