Spartan girls' basketball stumble at home

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans girls’ basketball team fell to the Valders Vikings on Tuesday evening, 55-49.

 

The Vikings marked the first points of the game and continued the early scoring momentum against the Spartans to go up 15-8 eight minutes into play. LC stopped the bleeding with a timeout minutes before the first half closed to propel two consecutive Taylor Thiry layups to bring the game within seven points. Valders controlled the last minute of first half play to lead by 10 points, 27-17. 

 

Second half play saw the Spartans’ Thiry add the first points which were followed by an Alexandria Wech layup seconds later to bring the game within two possessions. The Vikings Kate Wagner did not slow down her offensive play by adding two baskets in a row to pace the lead at seven points. Thiry battled back for her Spartans with three consecutive makes to drain what was a 13 point Valders lead to six points. With three minutes left of play, LC’s Magdeline Hanman gathered a shooting foul opportunity in which she converted one of three free-throw shots. Valders’ Wagner sank a pair of crucial free throws down the stretch to steal a road win for her squad over the Spartans, 55-49.The Spartans (5-3) will continue their season on January 5th for a home game against Freedom at 7pm.
