Southern Door sweeps doubleheader with Vikings on U-102.1

The Southern Door Eagles used a combination of strong pitching and timely hitting to take both games against the Gibraltar Vikings on Tuesday afternoon on U-102.1, winning 8-1 and 7-4 (in 5 innings.)

Game one was the Jaden Diller show, as he commanded his way through the Vikings lineup through his 5.1 innings of work. Diller allowed just one hit on 10 strikeouts during his outing, and was treated to loads of run support from his offense. Jack Peterson and Tyler Neinas scored four of the six runs that Diller was given for his run support, and the Eagles offense added on two more runs, resulting in a 8-1 final.

Game two went just five innings due to darkness, but since the game was officially a “full game” there was no need to have to come back and play it another day. Tyler Neinas got the ball for game two and was lights out for the first few innings. Christian Counard went deep in the fourth inning for Southern Door, taking a fastball from Aaron Brey way out to left field.

Gibraltar came back with runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth inning, as Rylan Caldecott walked home after a balk from Tyler Neinas and Braden Kita scored on a passed ball, making the game 7-4. Neinas came back and got Nathan Merkel to strike out, to end the fifth inning. The game would be official after that, and would end there after the two teams ran out of daylight.

The winning pitcher of game one was Jaden Diller, and the losing pitcher was Noah Greene. In game two, the winning pitcher was Tyler Neinas, and the losing pitcher was Bennett Isaacson.

The Eagles will be coming off a 3-2 loss to St. Mary’s Catholic on Saturday, their first loss of the season as they enter the game at 5-1 overall, and 4-0 in Packerland Conference play. Southern Door’s lineup is star studded from top to bottom, but so is their opponent in the Vikings.

The Vikings are undefeated so far in the regular season, and are 6-0 in the Packerland, sitting solely in first place. The Vikings have kept their games low scoring and have used strong pitching to lead them to their wins, whereas Southern Door has outscored their conference opponents 33-2.

Gary Barta and Reece Robillard will be on the call from Brussels on U-102.1 and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com beginning at 3:45 for the pregame show, with first pitch set for 4:00 between the Eagles and Vikings.

Southern Door falls in game against St. Marys Catholic

In a game played at the St. Mary's Catholic athletic complex, the
Zephyrs edged the Eagles 3-2. Southern Door took an early 2-0 2nd inning
lead when they took advantage of a botched 2-out infield pop fly.

The error was followed by a Derek Schinktgen single and an RBI single from Alec Guilette. A walk and a wild pitch, followed by a 2-out single cut the Eagles lead to
2-1 in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Southern Door handed St. Mary's
more free runs in the bottom of the 4th inning, when 2 infield errors set the stage for a  2-out single providing the Zephyrs with a 3-2 lead. Although both teams
mounted serious scoring threats in the bottom of the 6th inning,
baserunning mistakes by both teams resulted in no runs being scored. With no additional scoring, his game of mistakes saw St. Mary's hold their lead and escape with a 3-2 victory.

With the loss, Southern Door drops to (5-1) on the season, (4-0) in the
Packerland Conference. The Eagles return to conference play on Tuesday
afternoon when they host Gibraltar in a DH, with the starting time for
game 1 yet to be determined.

The Southern Door Eagles softball team puts their winning streak on the line Monday afternoon when they head to Ted Fritsch Park in Green Bay to battle Notre Dame Academy.

On Saturday, the Eagles blew out the Algoma Wolves 19-4 blowout before dropping the second half of their doubleheader 9-8. Southern Door scored eight runs in the first inning and put the game well out of reach in the fifth inning with seven runs in the fifth in the six-inning game. Chloe Lustilla and Callie Miller each had three RBI, and five players had multi-hit games for the Eagles. In game two,  the Wolves scored in every inning by the sixth and stopped the Eagles short in the seventh to preserve the 9-8  victory. The Eagles saw Greta Gutschow and Tori Marchant each drive in two runs and Payton Gilbertson collected two hits in the loss.

Eagles sweep Wolves in baseball action

Southern Door swept a baseball DH at Algoma on Saturday. In game 1, Algoma scored 2 runs on 3 hits in the bottom of the 1st inning to erase a 1-0 Eagles lead. SD answered with their own 2-run rally in the top of the 2nd inning behind a Jack Peterson RBI double, followed by a Tyler Neinas RBI single. The Eagles manufactured a run in the top of the 6th inning behind singles from Matthew Malvitz, Neinas, and Jaden Diller, eventually resulting in a 4-2 SD victory. Hitting leaders for the Eagles with 2 hits each included Peterson, Neinas, Diller, and Jared Hawkey. Diller earned the win on the mound, striking out 11 and walking 2 in his 6 innings of work. Tyler Neinas earned the save by retiring all 3 Wolves batters in the 7th inning on a total of 5 pitches. Algoma only had 1 baserunner after the 1st inning, with that runner being removed by a 6th inning double play.

Game 2 was never in doubt after SD plated 3 runs on 3 hits in the bottom of the 3rd inning, with Hawkey, Peterson, and Neinas getting hits. Hits from Diller, Christian Counard, and Malvitz increased the Eagle lead to 5-0 in the 5th inning. A 6th inning 5-run rally started by an Alec Guilette single and a Braylon Berg double, resulted in the game ended by the 10-run rule in the bottom of the 6th inning with a 10-0 final score.

With the 2 wins, SD goes to 5-0 for the season and 4-0 in the Packerland Conference. Their next scheduled game is 4:30 Monday afternoon at Manitowoc Lutheran.

Southern Door baseball cruises past Reedsville

In a non-conference game at Reedsville, Southern Door scored 11 runs in the 5th inning to bring an abrupt end to what had been a competitive game. The Eagles scored 2 runs in the 1st inning, including a leadoff home run from Jack Peterson, then added an additional 6 runs in the 2nd inning.

Reedsville scored a 1st inning run without the benefit of a hit and then added 4 runs on 3 hits in the bottom of the 3rd inning to trail 8-5. A 2-run blast in the 4th
inning by Christian Counard made the score 10-5. The roof fell in on the Panthers when Southern Door unloaded 11 runs on 7 hits in the top of the 5th inning, highlighted by home runs from Derek Schinktgen and Tyler Neinas, and a bases-clearing double by Alec Guilette. A couple of runs in the home half of the 5th inning made the final score a very football-like 21-7.

Drew Daoust pitched 3 innings and received credit for the win. The Southern Door hitting attack was led by Tyler Neinas who went 4-5, including a single, 2 doubles and a 3-run home run, and Derek Schinktgen with 3-4, a single, double, and 2-run homer. Southern Door softball uses 12 run 2nd to dominate Tigers

The Southern Door Eagles softball team kept their winning ways against the Wrightstown Tigers going on Thursday night, capitalizing on a strong hitting performance in a 15-3 win in just 5 innings.

It was one big inning for Southern Door in the win over the Tigers of Wrightstown, scoring 12 runs in the second inning and going through their entire batting order one and a half times in the inning. Payton Gilbertson, Chloe Lustila and Sophia Counard were just some of the names who came up big in the inning, with nearly every player reaching base at some point in the 2nd.

Southern Door had 18 total hits, led by Callie Miller with 3 hits, Lustilla also with 3 hits, Sophia Counard 2 hits, Ashlyn Delfossse 2 hits, and Gilbertson 2 hits. Ashlyn Delfosse was the winning pitcher on the night with four innings pitched and four strikeouts while allowing the three runs.

Southern Door will take on conference foe Algoma on Saturday for a Doubleheader.

Eagle softball set for rematch with Wrightstown

The Southern Door Eagles fell in the first matchup against Sevastopol on Tuesday, but lead the second game that was postponed 10-4. Southern Door will have to move on for now as they have a doubleheader against the Tigers of Wrightstown.

These two teams are familiar with each other, as the Eagles upset the Tigers as the number six seed in the playoffs last season, ousting Wrightstown by a score of 5-4. Southern Door returns nearly every impact player from that win and will look to keep the momentum against the Tigers rolling. Southern Door will also resume play against Sevastopol on April 18th at 4:00 p.m. in Brussels.

Wrightstown has started their season 1-0 with a win over Waupaca. The Tigers play out of the NEC, the same conference as the Luxemburg-Casco Spartans, and will have revenge on their mind when they take the field against the Eagles.

First pitch of game one of the doubleheader is set for 4:30 p.m.

Southern Door baseball looks to continue success against Reedsville

After rolling over the Sevastopol Pioneers in both games of a doubleheader, the Southern Door Eagles will move to some non-conference action as they take on Reedsville on the road.

Between the multiple innings of more than one run scored per inning and two pitchers combining for a perfect game in five innings, the Eagles of Southern Door got off to a hot start in their regular season action. Christian Counard got the ball for Southern Door in the second for the first four innings, striking out 11 of the 12 batters he faced. Jaden Diller was on for one inning of relief striking out all three batters, resulting in the perfect game for the duo and 14 strikeouts in 15 batters faced.

The regular season for Reedsville has been a mixed bag of results so far, with their record standing at 1-2. After losing their first game 13-1 to Valders, the Panthers bounced back to beat Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah 15-0. St. Mary's Catholic defeated Reedsville on Tuesday 4-0. Levi Korstad has thrown five scoreless innings so far this season, with six strikeouts in the win over Elkhart Lake.

First pitch from Reedsville is set for 4:00 p.m.

Eagles' Diller and Counard throw perfection as Eagles sweep doubleheader

The Southern Door Eagles got off to a great start defending their crown as Packerland Conference Champs, sweeping Sevastopol in their two game doubleheader.

In the opener, Tyler Neinas got the ball for the first four innings and threw about as good as he could as he was given some strong run support from the Eagles offense. Southern Door drew many walks and had some HBP’s to help them score runs in the first few innings. Will Jandrin shut the game down in one inning of relief as the game was done in five innings.

In the second game, the Eagles did not let their foot off the gas, rolling over the Pioneers 9-0. Christian Counard got the ball for Southern Door for the first four innings, striking out 11 of the 12 batters he faced. Jaden Diller was on for one inning of relief striking out all three batters, resulting in a perfect game for the duo and 14 strikeouts in 15 batters faced.

Southern Door will matchup with Reedsville on Thursday while Sevastopol travels to Goodman/Pembine on Thursday as well.

Pioneers take first from Eagles in doubleheader; second delayed by darkness

The Southern Door Eagles and Sevastopol Pioneers doubleheader played Tuesday afternoon was everything it was hyped up to be, with the Pioneers taking the opener 11-7 in 8 innings, and the second game delayed nearly halfway through.

Southern Door came back from a 7-0 hole to tie it with 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning. Luedtke had an RBI single to take the lead in the top of the 8th. Then, Addison Schauske hit a 3-run homerun in the top of the 8th. First game stats for the Eagles included Chloe Lustila with 2 hits including a double, Ashlyn Delfosse with 2 hits and Callie Miller had 2 hits with a double (2 RBIs). The Pioneers had Bailey Rikkola with 2 hits and 3 runs scored, plus Libby Ash chimed in with 2 hits.

In the second game, Southern Door leads 10-4 before the game was suspended due to darkness in the bottom of the fifth inning with two outs and a runner on first.

Southern Door Softball opens with Sevastopol

A strong season from the Eagles softball team last year could be used as fuel for the 2023 season, as Southern Door opens up with the Sevastopol Pioneers Tuesday afternoon.

Losing just one senior from a 10-8 season could be a strong sign for success from the Southern Door Eagles this year. The power pitching duo of Ashlyn Delfosse and Chloe Lustila may cause trouble to opposing offenses which can complement the strong offense. The Eagles will look to improve from their fourth place finish in the Packerland conference last season, and build off the first round upset against Wrightstown in the postseason.

Sevastopol was one game away from the state tournament last year ultimately falling to Edgar 11-0 in the sectional finals. Much like Southern Door, Sevastopol returns the majority of their team, only losing three seniors. Many of the basketball stars that made a deep run into the playoffs could potentially play for Sevastopol such as Bailey and Naomi Rikkola, Libby Ash and Addison Schauske. The Pioneers will be playing in the second half of a back to back after taking on Coleman Monday afternoon.

First pitch from Southern Door is set for 4:00 p.m.

Eagle Baseball set to defend Packerland title

After winning their second straight conference championship last season, the Southern Door Eagles will look to chase a third beginning on Tuesday afternoon against the Sevastopol Pioneers, this time with a new face wearing the manager cap.

John Berns, the former Sturgeon Bay and Sevastopol coach will take over Southern Door for this season, looking to lead the team back to the ways of past seasons. Last season, the Eagles finished the regular season 19-2, with their two losses coming in non-conference play against Luxemburg-Casco and Winneconne. After receiving the number one seed in the postseason, Southern Door would be upset by the Brillion Lions 4-2 in round two. The Eagles will return many key contributors, as five out of the seven Packerland All-Conference nominations from last year’s team will return, including the unanimous player of the year, Jack Peterson.

Sevastopol went 4-12 overall in last season’s regular season, finishing 2-8 in Packerland Conference play. The Pioneers will also have a new coach at the helm, as Jim Smasal is set to replace Tom Ash. The team will lose its two nominations from the All-Conference list, as Carter Bieri and Frankie Ash were seniors on the 2022 team. Sevastopol was eliminated by the Gibraltar Vikings in the playoffs to end their campaign last year.

First pitch from Southern Door is set for 4:00 p.m.

Hawkey to play in D3 WBCA All-Star Game

Southern Door senior forward Jared Hawkey has been selected for the Division 3 WBCA All Star Game after his stellar season.

Hawkey was a pivotal part of the Eagles’ Packerland Conference championship this season, averaging 13.6 points, 10 rebounds, 5.2 assists, 2.7 steals and 2 blocks per game. Hawkey proved his ability to be an all-around player this year, giving him the opportunity to play in the All-Star game.

The Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association All-Star Game is the best of the best nominated senior basketball players, which includes boys and girls circuits, that compete in a game based on the division their school was in. Players and coaches must raise money in order to play in the games.

The Boys All-Star Game will be played on June 29th at Justagame Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells.
