Culver's Door County Student Athlete of the Week: Southern Door's Charlie Neinas

Southern Door freshman pitcher Charlie Neinas knows there are plenty of starts ahead of him still after throwing a no-hitter earlier this month. The performance earned him Culver’s Door County Student-Athlete of the Week honors after the complete game shut-out in a 1-0 victory over Algoma on April 5th. A teammate had to tell him what was happening and his coach even had someone else warming up just in case. Neinas gives credit to his catcher that day, Devin Schinkten.

Neinas and the Southern Door Eagles hit the baseball diamond Thursday afternoon to face NEW Lutheran.

Relays, field events lead to strong Southern Door showing at Classic

The strength of Southern Door's relays and field events nearly toppled Sturgeon Bay in the final boys' tally at the Door County Classic in Fish Creek on Monday.

The boys' team came in second place to the Clippers by a margin of 92-89.5. The Eagles were anchored by a strong showing by their relay teams, taking the top spot in the 4 x100m, 4 x 200m, 4 x 400m, and 4 x 800m events. Evan Wheaton also topped the leaderboard in the shot put and discus events, throwing over 43 feet and 126 feet respectively.

The girls' team also showed some strength in its relays, winning the 4 x 400m and 4 x 800m events. Hailey Shimon's toss of 102'01 helped her capture a Door County Classic title in Discus.

Packerland golf heads to Peshtigo

Packerland Conference golfers in Door County will hit the links this afternoon in Peshtigo. Gibraltar, Green Bay NEW Lutheran, Sevastopol, Southern Door, Sturgeon Bay, and Oconto will all compete in the meet just four days after they all met at Cherry Hills Golf Course in Sturgeon Bay. The Bulldogs hope to secure their second victory after leading the field by over 20 strokes. Southern Door, Gibraltar, and Sturgeon Bay came in third, fourth, and fifth place respectively while Sevastopol currently does not have enough golfers on the team to register a team score. Tee time is set for 4 p.m. at Vernon Hills Golf Course.

Southern Door's Wery leaves Storm weary in softball win

Southern Door's Lexi Wery did it all in an 8-3 victory over Kewaunee Thursday.

Wery not only had two hits and an RBI, but also struck out five in four innings to help lead the Eagles to the win. Her partner in crime was Grace LeGrave, who match Wery on offense and earned the three-inning save while striking out a trio of Storm players along the way. Jackie Atkins delivered on a triple to drive in a run herself for the Eagles.

Wild pitch pushes Eagles to victory

Southern Door scored winning run in the bottom of 6th when Devin Schinkten scored on a wild pitch in the 3-2 victory over Kewaunee.

There was no scoring until the top of the 5th inning when the Storm scored two unearned runs to give them the late lead. The Eagles responded in the bottom half of the inning with two of their own, once on a wild pitch and another courtesy of Aiden Vandertie on his RBI single. Schinkten would come around and score one inning later on Danny Stangel's second wild pitch of the game to give the Eagles the victory. Freshman Charlie Neinas got the victory for the Eagles, going the distance while giving up four hits and three walks but striking out four.

Southern Door manager reflects on son's no-hitter

Southern Door baseball manager Dave Neinas tries to be a coach on a diamond and a dad at home, but that does not mean those lines did not blur a little bit earlier this month. It was Neinas’ son Charlie that went the distance to record a no-hitter against the Algoma Wolves 1-0 on April 5th. The freshman hurler struck out 10 Wolves batters while allowing only three to reach. Neinas says they were able to crack a small smile after a wild pitch gave the Eagles a slim lead.

Winning two close games give the Eagles a perfect 3-0 record heading into Tuesday matchup against rival Sturgeon Bay.

FULL INTERVIEW WITH SOUTHERN DOOR BASEBALL MANAGER DAVE NEINAS

They also won the 4x200 Relay with Montana, Baudhuin, Kyle Conard and Stanzel. Southern Door also won the 4x800 Relay with Sam Dean, Ben Slezewski, Grant Engelbert and Ben Kielar.

Evan Wheaton won the Shot Put and Discuss.

Southern Door softball off to solid start

The Southern Door softball team is off to a solid 3-1 start to the 2019 season. The Eagles have gotten good performances from just about everybody on the team so far. It will be extremely difficult for anyone on the roster to match the success of former Southern Door great Courtney Wautier. She broke the single-season school record for lowest ERA in 2009 when it was a minuscule 0.43. The previous record had been held for 15 years by Tracy Brauer who had an ERA of 0.44 in 1994. Tracy Brauer was the correct answer to Monday's trivia question which asked who previously held the single-season ERA record at Southern Door to Courtney Wautier.  Congratulations to Gilbert Annis who won a $25 gift certificate for answering the question correctly.

Eagles doubled up by Thunder

The Seymour Thunder went for 12 hits as they doubled up the Southern Door Eagles 8-4 in non-conference softball action.

The game was still in reach heading into the seventh inning when the Thunder's Chloe Evans hit a two-run home run to give Seymour its final margin of victory.

Tehya Bertrand clubbed a three-run homer in the loss for the Eagles while Jackie Atkins and Jessica Jacobson each added two hits.

High School Sports Trivia Contest Question of the Day 4-8-19

Monday's trivia question is, "Southern Door softball pitcher Courtney Wautier broke the school record for lowest ERA in a single season in 2009. The previous record stood for 15 years. Who previously held that record?"

You can find this question in the DoorCountyDailyNews.com E-paper. If you answer correctly through the E-paper, you have an opportunity to win a prize.

The answer will be posted at 7 AM on Tuesday.

Eagles Beat Wolves on Neinas's No Hitter

Freshman pitcher Charlie Neinas threw a complete game No-Hitter in Southern Door’s 1-0 win over Algoma Friday.

Neinas struck out 10 Wolves batters while only allowing three runners to reach.

The Eagles pushed the only run across in the 6th inning on a wild pitch that scored Tyler Kroll, who led off the inning with a double.

Zac Schmidt started and was credited with the loss. Schmidt only allowed 2 hits and struck out seven in 6 1/3rd innings.

Eagles softball soars past Wolves

Two home runs helped Southern Door power past Algoma in Packerland softball action Thursday in the 12-0, five-inning win. Tehya Bertrand delivered the big blow with a three-run homer as apart of a three-hit performance. Kendra Dantoin delivered a long ball of her own. Grace LeGrave did her damage a little differently, delivering on three hits. Lexi Wery controlled things on the mound, allowing only one hit in the contest. Senior Madeline Prokash took the loss in the pitcher's circle for Algoma.

Southern Door softball gets blowout victory

Southern Door softball had no issue with Sevastopol on Thursday winning 15-0 in three innings. The leading hitters for Southern Door were Grace LeGrave who went 4 for 4 with 3 RBIs. Jessica Jacobson went  3 for 3 also driving in 3 runs.

The winning pitcher was Lexi Wery. She threw a 3 inning perfect game with 5 strikeouts.

The losing pitcher was Allison Daubner.

Eagles Walk-Off In Comeback Win Over Pioneers

Southern Door’s Derik LeCaptain hit a game-winning single to give the Eagles a 7-6 win over Sevastopol in Packerland Conference baseball Tuesday.

The Pioneers took an early 4-0 lead after three innings in large part to five defensive errors by the Eagles.

The Eagles would get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fifth, but Sevastopol quickly extended their lead to 6-1 after Josh and Jacob Pflieger would score on a two-run double by Robby Pollman.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Eagles started their comeback. Four runs would score on wild pitches, walks and a two-out RBI double by Logan Jeanquart.

After a quick top of the seventh inning, the Eagles would load the bases, score on a wild pitch and then LeCaptain swung on a 3-0 pitch and hit a rope to center field.

LeCaptain was also credited with the win in relief of starter Tyler Kroll. Kroll went the first five innings and finished with six strikeouts.

Nathan Stenzel was credited with the loss in relief. Robby Pollman started and went the first four innings giving Eagle hitters problems. Pollman allowed just two hits and struck out five.

Jaden Sawyer had two hits for the Pioneers.

Logan Jeanquart finished with two hits and Alex Daoust was on base all four plate appearances and scored two runs.

Southern Door's Erik Cordier made it big

Erik Cordier's name is all over the Southern Door baseball record books. He is the program's all-time leader in ERA, RBI and tied for first in home runs. The talent Cordier showed on the diamond led him to being a second-round pick of the Kansas City Royals right out of high school. After spending many years in the minor leagues with three different organizations, Cordier finally got a chance in the Major Leagues in 2014 with the San Francisco Giants. He would eventually play for the Miami Marlins during the 2015 season as well.

Cordier was the answer to Monday's trivia question which asked, "What former Southern Door pitcher was picked in the 2nd round of the 2004 Major League Baseball Draft and then went on to pitch for the Giants and Marlins in the Big Leagues?"  Congratulations to Ryan Benzinger who was the winner of a $25 gift certificate.
