Southern Door Travels to Sturgeon Bay to Hand Clippers 28-8 Loss Friday Night

In a game that was going to be a true showing of who these teams are, the Southern Door Eagles proved to be the better team as they nearly shut out the Sturgeon Bay Clippers in a 28-8 win Friday night at Memorial Field.

 

It was not the cleanest game for either side, but the Eagles led from the beginning. They took the ball after winning the coin toss, and on the first drive of the game, Raymond Paye scored on a 3-yard run to put the Eagles ahead for good, 7-0, after a successful extra-point kick by Kody Wagaman. After a three-and-out and punt by Sturgeon Bay, Paye got another carry but fumbled the ball, with the Clippers' Scott Anderson recovering.

The Clippers gave the ball right back to the Eagles, however. On the first play of the drive, Rayshaun Johnson lost the ball, and it was recovered by the Eagles' Jackson Wagner. Starting with the ball inside the red zone, the Eagles looked to capitalize with a touchdown. On fourth down, Caleb Delwiche ran toward the first-down marker as a flag flew. The penalty was against the Eagles, so after requesting a measurement to determine whether to accept or decline the penalty, the Clippers got the ball back after stopping Delwiche inches short.

 

Though the Clippers got out of the shadow of their own goal post, the drive ended with a punt. They got the ball back when Sam Hansen intercepted Delwiche early in the Eagles' next drive.

 

The turnovers were not over. Johnson lost another fumble to Paye, who then fumbled on offense to give the ball back to Sturgeon Bay. Each team then turned the ball over on downs.

 

The final score of the half came in the closing minute when Delwiche had a pass tipped by a Clippers defender in the end zone, leading to an impressive diving touchdown grab by Jackson Wagner and a 14-0 halftime lead.

 

After a handful of punts to start the third quarter, Lance Veeser found the end zone on a 6-yard touchdown run, putting the Eagles ahead 21-0. Delwiche rushed for a 5-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to cap the Eagles' scoring, but the chaos was far from over.

Trygg Stuth scrambled to the left but lost the ball on a fumble, which the Eagles returned nearly 30 yards. Even though there were holding calls against each team on the play, the result stood, giving the Eagles the ball inside Clippers territory.

 

The Clippers' defense did its job, preventing the Eagles from scoring after four tries from inside the 10-yard line. On the first play of the Clippers' final drive, Stuth lofted the ball to Alex Boden, who shook off the initial defender and outran the rest of the defense for an 89-yard touchdown, the Clippers' only score of the night. Stuth found Jack Higgenbotham on the 2-point conversion to make the final score 28-8.

Each team will play Thursday night next week. The Eagles host Oconto Falls, while the Sturgeon Bay Clippers hit the road to take on Bonduel. The Clippers game can once again be heard on U-102.1 and the NEW Radio Sports Network.

DCU edges New London

The Door County United (DCU) Girls High School Swim Team edged out New London High School to secure their win on Thursday, October 1st. The team scored 85 points to New London’s 80.

 

DCU placed first in eight of the 11 events for the evening. Freshman Ashlyn Sixel (SDHS) placed first in the 100-yard Freestyle, scoring six points for the team. She also placed 3rd in the 50-yard Freestyle, which scored three additional points for the team. Shaeffer Rass (SEV) and Hazel Monfils (SDHS) tied for most individual points scored for the team with their first-place finishes in both of their individual events of the evening. They each added 12 points to the overall team score. DCU 200-yard Freestyle A and B relays went one and two as well, scoring 12 of the overall points for the night. The A relay consisted of Sixel, S. Rass, Quinn Sperber (SDHS), and Monfils. The B relay consisted of Brennan Rass (SEV), Mia Olson (SBHS), Rachel Rock (SEV), and Jillian Peterson (SDHS).

 

DCU’s next meet is their final home meet at the Door County YMCA. They will take on the Shawano Bonduel Co-Op on Thursday, October 8th, with the meet starting at 6:00 pm. Come out and support our seniors at their last home meet! 

Personal record and season best times fall for Eagles in Reedsville

Running in honor of High School teacher Erin Fritsch as she battles cancer inspired plenty of fast times at Thursday's Reedsville Invitational.

 

On the boys' side, Colton Valley ran a personal record 18:17 to take 13th overall. All four varsity runners recorded at least a season-best time in the 5K race. On the girls' side, Malania Veeser's personal best time of 19:33 helped her capture 1st place overall. Six of the seven runners on the girls' team ran a personal record with Addison Miller (22:07) recording a season best time.

Southern Door volleyball welcomes Gibraltar

The Southern Door volleyball team looks to defend its home court on Thursday when Gibraltar comes to town.

 

The Eagles used great passing and serving to sweep Kewaunee in three sets last Thursday 25-21, 25-12 and 25-19. The Eagles were led by Harper Kramer with 17 assists and 8 kills, while Maiya Olson and Chelsie Jacquet each added 7 and 5 kills, respectively.

 

The Vikings are coming off a 25-18, 25-12, 25-23 win against Providence Academy on Tuesday as the district celebrated its new digs. The Vikings were led by Ella Clarke (13 kills, 3 blocks, .556 hitting efficiency), Aileen Torres (7 kills, 7 aces, 6 digs), Isla Fagundes (26 assists, 4 aces, 7 digs), Ema Collak (6 kills, 2 aces).

 

First serve is set for 7 p.m.

Southern Door, Kewaunee cross country visit Reedsville

While the rest of the area's teams head to Sturgeon Bay, Southern Door and Kewaunee will head south to Reedsville for a cross-country invitational on Thursday.

 

The first races begin at 4 p.m.

 

LAST ACTION

It was another banner day for the Southern Door cross country team Thursday evening at the Jim Bremser Invitational. On the girls' side, Malania Veeser posted another Top 10 finish, running a time of 20:17 to finish 9th overall, while Addison Miller and Mikaya Trusova broke 23 minutes to finish in the Top 65. For the boys, Colton Valley led the boys with a Top 50 time of 19:24.

 

Jayden Reckelberg (20:44) and Gage Vlies (20:45) were on top of each other in the Jim Bremser Invitational as they both posted Top 50 performances.  Natalie Miller (21:55) and Kaylyn Martin (22:15) were close to each other in the girls' race to finish in the Top 20.
