Zuelke resigns, Kline takes over as interim head coach

Ryan Zuelke is out as Southern Door head football coach after serving the role since 2018.

Southern Door Superintendent Chris Peterson told NEW Radio Sports Network Wednesday afternoon that Zuelke was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation. Peterson would not comment on the incident that caused investigation, only saying it was nothing criminal. After it was determined that there was no fault on Zuelke's part, the head coach still opted to resign from his post. Peterson called the split amicable by both parties.

Ben Kline will keep his interim head coach tag through the end of the season.

Southern Door finds new opponent, plays Marshall Friday

Within three hours of beginning its search for a new opponent, Southern Door will fly (more accurately drive) south for its game on Friday.

Athletic Director Korey Mallien told NEW Radio Sports Network Wednesday morning that the Eagles will head to Marshall High School for its game on Friday after Peshtigo was forced to cancel their matchup. Playing in the Eastern Suburban Conference in the Madison-area, Marshall is 6-0 after beating Dodgeland 62-8 last week. They had their game against Cambridge canceled this week, which put them in the same boat as the Eagles. Waterloo and Lancaster were also in the mix for the possible replacement game.

The NEW Radio Sports Network will cover the game with Matthew Frea and Reece Robillard on the call on 104.1 WRLU and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com.

WANTED: New opponent for Southern Door football

Southern Door football is in need of a new opponent before this Friday.

Athletic director Korey Mallien put the call out for a new opponent after 8 a.m. on  Wednesday, saying they only lost their originally scheduled game.

The Eagles were originally scheduled to play Peshtigo, which has already forfeited two games this season to Mishicot and Oconto. They most recently lost to Lourdes Academy last Friday night 42-0. Mallien could not be reached for additional comment on the cancellation as of 11:30 a.m.

Southern Door had to be quick on their feet to fill an open spot on their schedule last year when Kewaunee opted to not play last fall, instead arranging a game with Luxemburg-Casco.

We will have updates on this story as it develops.

Eagles soar over Blazers in volleyball

Southern Door visits Green Bay for volleyball matchup

The Southern Door volleyball team hopes to find its first conference win in Green Bay Tuesday when they play NEW Lutheran.

The Eagles lost to the Blazers in the season opening Green Bay East invite and have faced conference-leading Sevastopol and Oconto for some of their Packerland matchups. It split its matchups against Valders (W) and Menasha (L) at the Valders Invite on Saturday. The Blazers struggled to break 20 points in its most recent 3-0 loss to Sturgeon Bay last Thursday.

The first serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Eagles dominate to homecoming victory

The Southern Door football team put an exclamation mark on homecoming week with a 40-14 victory over Clintonville. The Eagles controlled both sides of the line of scrimmage which allowed their skill players to navigate the offense down the field and forced Clintonville’s offense into making throws under duress.

The Eagles really took flight after the first quarter, which ended with the Truckers in front, 8-6. The first score came on the opening drive on a two yard touchdown run from Jack Peterson, to put Southern Door ahead, 6-0. Taylor Schaefer was the workhorse for that drive and much of the game for Southern Door, but fell just shy of getting his first touchdown of the season. Clintonville answered the opening drive with a 32 yard touchdown pass from Sam Wegener to Kolton Barkow.

Southern Door took the game back over in the second quarter when Drew Daoust hit Jared Hawkey on a 16-yard touchdown pass, to Southern Door up 12-8. That was the first of three Daoust touchdowns on the night. With 2:38 left in the first half, Peterson scored his second rushing touchdown on a 52 yard touchdown run. Southern Door then went to halftime with an 18-8 lead.

Scoring would go silent in the third quarter until Southern Door got a 26-yard touchdown run from Daoust with 3:02 left in the period. Not even two game minutes later, Daoust returned an interception for a touchdown from around 30 yards out. Within a couple of minutes, Southern Door’s ten-point lead turned into a 32-8 route.

Derek Shinkgten scored the final touchdown for the Eagles with just under ten minutes left to play in the fourth quarter. Jonas Jandrin followed that up with an interception defense. The Truckers gave one last effort and it paid off late in the fourth quarter when Sam Wegener found Jordan Wegener for a 58 yard score.

For the Eagles, Ben Kline got his first win in his current role as Interim Head Coach. It was announced on Friday that he would be coaching the game for the Eagles. Kline was able to get each healthy player in the game and said that the reserves even preserved their goal of giving up only 15 or less points, when they stopped Clintonville’s final two point conversion attempt. The Eagles defensive line brought pressure all night, including Kody Marchant who was in on a couple of sacks.

Southern Door is now 5-1 overall this season and 3-0 in conference play. The next game they play in is at Peshtigo, on October 1st. Pregame coverage on 104.1 WRLU begins at 6:30 PM with a kickoff at 7:00 PM.

You can hear from Coach Ben Kline after the game:

Southern Door will get a chance to rebound on Tuesday when they visit Green Bay NEW Lutheran, who is coming off of a loss to Sturgeon Bay. That match will begin at 7:00 PM.

Southern Door going for three straight wins

When Southern Door hosts Clintonville on Friday, they’ll be going for a 3-0 start to the conference season. The Eagles are 4-1 overall to this point of the season, and coming off of a 22-8 win in Bonduel. The Eagles also will be led by a rushing attack that has garnered over 1100 yards this season, paved by the offensive line and driven by Jonas Jandrin and Jack Peterson, who has ten total touchdowns.

On the opposite site, the Clintonville Truckers are 3-2 overall and have a passing game that has gained over a 1000 yards this season. Eagles volleyball faced with tough Thursday task

Southern Door is coming off the Clintonville Invite on September 18th. The two teams played in the 2020 regular season and Oconto won in two different tournaments. Oconto has a 10-1 record so far this season. First serve will be at 7:00 PM in Brussels.

The Southern Door cross country team will get another meet on their belt on Tuesday when they race to Winneconne.

The Eagles will race against the likes of Kewaskum, Valley Christian, Wisconsin Rapids Lincoln, Oshkosh North, Neenah, Appleton East, Clintonville, Laconia, Ripon, Waupaca
New London, Xavier, and Iola-Scandinavia when the gun fires first at 3:30 p.m.

In one of their last meets at Chilton, Ben Grota led the boys with a 19:26 5K time, which was good for fourth overall. Maddie Finger medaled for the girls, finishing in 21st place with a time of 26.11. Three boys and four girls registered personal records in the 5K distance.

Welcome back, Jack: Peterson scores three touchdowns in Eagles win

Southern Door overcame three first half turnovers as quarterback Jack Peterson returned from injury and scored three touchdowns, including a game-sealing 71-yard run in Friday’s 22-8 win over Bonduel. Southern Door coughed up two fumbles and threw for an interception shortly before the end of the first half, but the Southern Door defense was able to stiffen up at nearly each pivotal point.

Peterson’s night didn’t start as well as it ended, as he fumbled on the third Eagles play and the Bears took advantage with a one yard touchdown run by Louis Hrabik to make the score 8-0 in the first quarter. Peterson had the first touchdown of his hat trick when he scored on a 19-yard run, in which he was running off the right side of the line of scrimmage, and reversed field and won the race to the opposite pylon. The score and conversion tied the game at 8 apiece with 6:59 left to go in the first half. The ensuing Bonduel possession, Lane Aleson recovered a fumble which set up the first and only Southern Door lead.

A minute after Peterson’s touchdown run, he found Drew Daoust who made a diving grab for a 31-yard touchdown. With 5:58 left on the clock in the second quarter, the Eagles were up 16-8 and would take that lead all the way until there was 3:01 left in the game. While trying not to give Bonduel a legitimate shot to come back into the game in the fourth quarter, Peterson took a designed option to the left, and reversed the other way en route to a 71-yard touchdown run that included multiple broken tackles. The score made the game 22-8, and Southern Door made Bonduel turn the ball over on downs the next possession. Southern Door’s defense held up well after the first quarter, as Taylor Schaefer got an interception and the defensive line kept pressure on Noah Weier throughout much of the game. The Eagles will host Clintonville next Friday, September 24th. Pregame coverage will begin for that game at 6:30 PM on 104.1 WRLU and newradiosports.com, and at 7:00 PM the game will kickoff.

The Bears one win so far this season came in a 14-0 shutout over Oconto.

The Eagles and Bears played last season in the regular season finale, and the Bears came out on top with a 39-22 victory. Friday’s game will start at 7:00 PM. Eagles volleyball season still young ahead of visit to Peshtigo

Southern Door, who has played in less volleyball so far this season than their Packerland foes, will have their second game of the season when they head to Peshtigo on Thursday. Southern Door’s lone game this season is a three-set loss to Sevastopol. Overall, Peshtigo is 9-5 this season. Thursday’s matchup will begin at 7:00 PM.

Southern Door pieces together first conference win

Despite giving up a kickoff return for a touchdown and a pick-six, Southern Door reached 1-0 in conference play in Mishicot on Friday, winning 28-20. The first quarter was scoreless as both teams exchanged interceptions. Drew Daoust, who replaced an injured Jack Peterson at quarterback, had a pass intercepted in the endzone by Logan Marqaurdt early in the game. Shortly after, Jared Hawkey intercepted a Jacob Hibbard pass in the first quarter.

Southern Door rode their backfield tandem of Jonas Jandrin and Luke Olson, with a dash of Derek Schinktgen. In the first minute of the second quarter, Olson scored from 11 yards out which put Southern Door up, 6-0. For Mishicot, Marquardt returned the ensuing kickoff 70 yards to tie the game at 6 apiece. With over five minutes remaining, Marquardt grabbed his second interception of the night at the Mishicot goalline. On the following play, the Southern Door defensive line answered by sacking Hibbard in the endzone, and gaining an 8-6 lead with the safety. Later in the quarter, Mishicot scored a 38-yard touchdown on a deep ball from Hibbard to Austin Fencl to go up 12-8.

Daoust and the Eagles got the ball back with well under a minute left before halftime, and Daoust launched a pass down to the three-yard line for Jared Hawkey, and Southern Door got a time-out off with a second left. It was enough time for Daoust to punch in a 3-yard touchdown and also get the two-point conversion on a similar play, making the score 16-12 heading into the break.

Midway through the third quarter, Brodie Overbeck blocked a punt which set up Southern Door’s offense to start their next drive at the 41-yard line of Mishicot. Daoust let Jonas Jandrin run under a 31-yard throw for a touchdown to put Southern Door up by two scores, 22-12. With seven seconds left in the third. Mishicot’s Adam Backus got a pick-six and put Mishicot within two points of Southern Door. Jonas Jandrin got the last score of the game with 1:28 remaining, when he ran in a 21-yard touchdown. On the last-chance possession for Mishicot, Taylor Schaefer broke up a pass intended for Fencl to seal the game.

Southern Door is now 1-0 in conference and 3-1 overall. The Eagles head to Bonduel on Friday. The game will be broadcasted on 104.1 WRLU with pregame coverage starting at 6:30 PM.

Southern Door thumped by Colby

Friday night was one to forget for Southern Door football, who lost 52-7 to the Colby Hornets. The Eagles fell behind after the opening drive by Colby, when running back Mason Voss had a four yard touchdown. Southern Door turned the ball over on downs the ensuing drive. The signal caller for the Hornets, Brent Jeske, took a quarterback keeper into the endzone in the first quarter and the score was then 14-0. On the final play of the first quarter, Jeske hit Caden Healy who went up the visitor sideline for a 43 yard touchdown, and after the two point conversion the score was 22-0. The play was set up by an interception by Colby’s Brandon Voelker.

Within a minute of the second quarter starting, Colby added to their lead after an interception by Voss was returned for a score. The pick-six was one of two times Colby forced a Peterson interception. With a 28-0 lead, Colby scored again on a 70-yard run from Jeske, which made the score 34-0. The Colby lead increased to 40-0 with a 21-yard Mason Voss touchdown run shortly before the halftime break.

Drew Daoust played the second half at quarterback as Peterson nursed an injury on the sideline. Early in the second half, Colby’s Grant Oelrich got a strip-sack on Daoust and Colby turned into a 40-yard touchdown run from Voss moments later, to go up 46-0. Luke Olson got his first career touchdown for Southern Door, as the freshman running back scored on a 10-yard dash. Gavin Voss ended the scoring for Colby and made the game 52-7. In a bright spot for Southern Door, defensive lineman Joe Haberli got an interception. The pick happened when Colby had a botched snap on a punt and Haberli intercepted a throw from Tristen Strange.
