Eagles Outlast Clippers for Overtime Win

On Friday night in Brussels, the Southern Door Eagles and Sturgeon Bay Clippers played an overtime game, with the Eagles winning 70-69 on U-102.1.

The Eagles scored the game's first points and would hold the lead for most of the first half.  On the way to the 30-30 halftime score, the Clippers fought back several times from being down as much as 8.  The second half had a similar back-and-forth battle, with both teams taking leads and then losing them just as quickly.

Ashlynn Delfosse would miss most of the second half after picking up a fourth foul early in the second half.  Things would get very interesting as things approached the final seconds of regulation.  The Eagles trailed by 2 with 15 seconds left.  Coach Alyssa Conway would call a timeout to draw up the final play.  The Clippers defended well, but Kyleigh Clafin would take a baseline shot that bounced off the backboard and in as the buzzer sounded, ending regulation 60-60.

Clafin would add 4 more of her team-leading 22 points in the overtime period.  Alyssa Bouche added four overtime points and was the second-highest Eagle on the night with 14.  The Clippers kept things close all night thanks to their success at the free-throw line.  They would shoot 21-34 from the charity stripe, including 15 of 20 out of Regan Kasten, the Clippers second highest scorer with 23. As overtime wound down, it would be the Clippers' turn to draw up a final play.  Coach Dan Tjernagel called a timeout with 9.9 seconds left, trailing by 1.  The play drawn up would get Dasha Yeltysheva a shot from just underneath the basket.  Unfortunately, she would miss the shot and end the game with her team-high 28 points.

The Clippers' next game is on Monday, when they play Three Lakes on the road. Southern Door will also play Algoma on Tuesday night.

Eagles host Pioneers on U-102.1

The final month of the regular season gets underway as the Pioneers and Eagles meet on Saturday afternoon.  Each team is coming off a win Thursday night.  This is the second matchup between these teams this season. The first matchup came December 13th with a 80-66 Eagle victory.  Daoust, Pierre and Berg all crossed the 20-point mark in that game for the Eagles.  The two leading scorers for the Pioneers were Damien Lardinois and Bo Tanck who each had 14.

The Eagles took care of The Brillion Lions 68-43 at home Thursday night. Drew Daoust led the way with 27 points, which put his career total at 2725 points which puts him in second all-time in the state. The man on the top of the list is Anthony Pieper with 3391. Lauden Berg and Tyler Neinas were the next two leading scorers with 13 and 12 points respectively.

The Pioneers are coming off a victory Thursday night in their home non-conference game in which they beat Goodman/Pembine by a score of 74-27. Zaul Valdiva led the way with 23 points, followed by Bo Tanck with 15.  Logan Schuh and Cash Kuehn added 8 each.

Jacob Nate will have the call from Brussels starting with the 1:45 pregame show, followed by the tip-off which is scheduled for 2:00 PM.

Daoust moves up scoring list as Eagles tame Lions

Drew Daoust made his history and Southern Door earned their win as the Eagles beat Brillion Thursday night 68-43.

After scoring eight points in the first half, Daoust moved to number two all-time on the Wisconsin high school basketball scoring list in the second half as he tallied 27 points in the Eagles win. He needed 26 points to tie former St. Nazianz JFK Prep star Mickey Crowe after passing former Elkhart Lake player Mike Koehler for #3 on the all-time scoring list earlier in the week. Lauden Berg helped the Eagles jump on the Lions early, scoring all 13 of his points in the first half to help the Eagles take a 35-15 lead into the locker room. Tyler Neinas added 12 points and Caden Pierre chipped in eight points in the win. Evan Krepline scored 24 points to lead the Lions in the loss.

Eagles host Clippers Friday on U-102.1

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers travel to Brussels Friday night to take on the Southern Door Eagles in the final January games of 2025.

The Clippers are coming off a 45-55 loss Monday against Green Bay East. Regan Kasten put up 22, followed by Dasha Yelysheva's 16.  Southern Door is also coming a Monday night loss to Brillion by a score 57-30.  Ashlyn Delfosse led the Eagles scoring with 17.

The early season matchup between the teams came on December 12 by way of a 53-42 victory for Southern Door.  The Eagles only had 3 scorers that night.  Ashlyn Delfosse had 19, Kyleigh Clafin added 10, and Alanah Kaye contributed 8.  The Clippers were led by 18 points from Dasha Yeltysheva, 15 points for Regan Kasten, 6 points for Cady Carlson, and Gabriella Tjernagel added a single 3 pointer.

Jacob Nate will have the call beginning at 6:45 with the pregame show, followed by the 7:00 tipoff.

Southern Door's Daoust nears next benchmark vs. Brillion

History could be made once again in the Eagle Gym on Thursday night as Southern Door plays at home against non-conference opponent Brillion.

Southern Door's Drew Daoust needs 27 points to pass former St. Nazianz JFK Prep star Mickey Crowe for #2 on the all-time scoring list in Wisconsin high school basketball history. He recently passed former Elkhart Lake player Mike Koehler on the all-time scoring list. Koehler tweeted at Daoust on Wednesday after Daoust dropped 33 on Peshtigo on Tuesday, saying, "Congrats on passing me and good luck with the remainder of your season. Best wishes to you at the next level as well." Daoust has scored at least 28 points in 10 straight games and he is averaging over 31 points per game on the season. The Eagles are on a nine-game winning streak, with their last loss coming against Mosinee in the Preble Holiday Tournament.

The Lions are 10-5 on the season, rebounding from a 20-point loss to Roncalli with a 61-30 win over Valders in their last game. They are led by Owen Krepline, who averages more than 24 points per game.

Tip off is set for 7 p.m.

Southern Door, Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol meet for final conference dual

Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol could clinch the Packerland Conference crown on Tuesday night with a win over local rival Southern Door.

SBS enter the evening 3-0 in the Packerland Conference while the Eagles are looking for their first victory of the conference season. Last week, SBS won its matches by scores of 56-23 over Oconto and 35-34 over Peshtigo. In its win against Oconto, SBS tallied nine straight positive decisions including three pins (Ethan Denamur, Harrison Schartner and Anthony Estevez) and four forfeits. In its victory over the Bulldogs, the back and forth dual fell into the hands of SBS based on criteria thanks to no unsportsmanlike penalties and accepting one less forfeit. The unsportsmanlike penalty came after Nathan Sansom avoided getting pinned, drawing the ire of the Bulldogs' Nathen Kleikamp.  Drew Propsom and Patrick Shefchik earned pins in the dual.

In that same multi-dual, the Eagles lost 51-24 to Peshtigo and 48-35 to Oconto. In their loss against the Blue Devils, none of the four contested matches went the full six minutes as Colton Krueger posted the only win for the Eagles at 285 pounds with a 64-second pin. Despite the final score, the Eagles had a little more success in their dual against Peshtigo. Lance Veeser, Chance Dekeyser, and Nora LeFevre won three of the nine matches.

Tuesday's dual begins at 7 p.m. at Southern Door.

Southern Door continues to reign on top of the Packerland Conference with an 81-64 win over Oconto.

Drew Daoust dropped a season-high 40 points in the contest, continuing a string of performances with 30+ points. He hit half of the team's eight threes, which helped the Eagles outscore the Blue Devils 52-31 in the second half. Lauden Berg (16 pts), Caden Pierre (12 pts), and Tyler Neinas (10 pts) all registered double figures. Carter Koch tried keeping the Blue Devils in the game as he scored 28 points. Fifteen points from Cooper Campsure add to the Blue Devils total that was not able to dislodge the Eagles, which remains perfect in the Packerland Conference.

Eagles soar past Clippers on U-102.1

A strong second start to the 2nd half was enough for Southern Door to power past Sturgeon Bay, as heard on U102.1 on Thursday night.

Southern Door and Sturgeon Bay faced off in Packerland Conference boy’s basketball, and traded baskets throughout the first half.  It wasn’t until late in the 1st, when Southern Door was able to creep out to a 10 point lead, which prompted Sturgeon Bay to take a timeout.  Out of the timeout, the Clippers promptly got a basket to cut the lead back to single digits.  As the half came to a close, when many thought the Eagles may hold for the final shot, Drew Daoust hit a 3 point shot just after bringing the ball across midcourt, leaving Sturgeon Bay to scramble to answer.  The Clippers were unable to get a shot off, and went into the locker room trailing 36-25.

Southern Door came out of the break red hot from the floor, going on a 12-2 run to open the game up to a 48-27, prompting another Sturgeon Bay timeout.  Once again, the resilient Clippers would fight back and answered with an inbound basket to cut into the deficit.  Fortunately for the Eagles, Drew Daoust took command, whether it was driving to the lane, or passing to open shooters and building the lead back up to as high as 25, giving Southern Door firm control of the game.

Sturgeon Bay would have one last rally, as Jackson Starr got going in the 2nd half, as well as some sharpshooting from Benjamin Ash, among others, who trimmed the lead down to 18.  Before the run could continue much further, Caden Pierre drew an offensive foul on Starr, effectively ending the late rally for the Clippers.

Drew Daoust led all scorers with 33 points, and was joined in double figures by Caden Pierre, who chipped in 17.  Tyler Neinas also was a big contributor with 8 points, 6 of which came in the 2nd half.

For the Clippers, Braden Evers led the way with 13, and Jackson Starr added 12 for the ballgame.

Southern Door continues a very busy stretch of schedule, hosting Green Bay NEW Lutheran on Saturday night, and then Denmark on Monday.  Sturgeon Bay will get a break in the game schedule before traveling to Green Bay NEW Lutheran on Friday, January 24th.

Eagles boys soar past Vikings on 105.1 The GOAT

Two fast starts to start the half made it a quick evening for the Southern Door Eagles boys basketball team as they beat Gibraltar Friday night 74-37.

The Eagles took a 10-0 lead in the opening minutes before Jeffrey Mize scored the game's first bucket for the Vikings. Caden Pierre and Liam Lindenberg traded three throughout the half as they both registered 15 points, but Drew Daoust provided the difference for the Eagles. He forced several Vikings turnovers, some of which contributed to his 14 first-half points as the Eagles took a 43-19 lead into the break.

Lauden Berg scored nine of his 13 points in the second, adding to Pierre's 15 points and Daoust's 29 points. Southern Door welcomes Kewaunee, Luxemburg-Casco for Thursday wrestling meet

The Southern Door wrestling team will welcome Little Chute and two local rivals for a quadrangular meet on Thursday evening.

Kewaunee and Luxemburg-Casco will join the festivities with the four teams focusing on their conference meets first (Kewaunee vs. Southern Door, Luxemburg-Casco vs. Little Chute) before turning their attention to each other.

The Eagles are coming off the Rocket Scramble last weekend. Lance Veeser's title at 165 pounds helped the Eagles finish near the top half of the Rocket Scramble leaderboard on Saturday. Veeser had four pins on the day, including one in the championship title-clinching match. Clark LeFevre (5th), Ethan Alexander (3rd), and Colton Krueger (5th) also finished in the Top 5. The Eagles won the girls division title with 248 points, 18 points more than second place Whitnall/Greendale. Sydney Turner was the lone champion in the group after she pinned her way through 138 point bracket. Nora LeFevre, Attyson Wilson, and Violet Jackson nearly won their own titles with runner-up performances.

The Storm and the Spartans have been out of action since their holiday tournaments.

Kewaunee's Mitchell Boeder kept his winning ways going during the weekend's On The Water Classic, taking third place at 285 pounds. Boeder's lone defeat came in the semifinals but he rebounded with a pin and a major decision in his final two matches to earn the bronze medal in his weight class. He was the only Storm wrestler to make the second day of competition.

Blakelee Bastien went south of the Cheddar Curtain to hit 150 wins in his career after going 6-0 at The FLAVIN' Tournament in DeKalb, Ill. Bastien, Carson Neubert, and Carson Blohowiak all went perfect on the weekend, including 3-0 in duals that saw the Spartans beat Rochelle (Ill.) 53-22, fall to Aurora (Ill.) West  47-24, and top Carol Stream (Ill.) Glenbard West 41-31. That was good enough to take 2nd place in Pool A and post a 4-2 dual record on the weekend.

Weigh-Ins begin at 4:00 p.m., with the wrestling beginning at 5:00 p.m.

Southern Door girls host Roncalli to kick off week

The Jets stand at 3-8 on the year, rebounding from an 0-7 start to win three of their last four games. Lauren Stangel paces the offense with 17.0 ppg and 2.4 apg while Isabella Jacky nearly averages a double-double with 8.6 ppg and 11.0 rpg.

Eagles Open 2025 With Victory Over Wolves

The Algoma Wolves started the game as the hot team, but the Southern Door Eagles would leave the gym with the win, 63-52 Friday night in Algoma.

The Wolves had not played a game in nearly a month, but you would not have guessed that jumping to an early 6-0 lead and, at one point in the first half, building an 11-point lead over the Eagles.

However, the Eagles would climb back from that point, heading into the halftime break with a 23-19 lead. The Eagles would pile things on further by opening the second half on a 9-0 run.

The Eagles' first nine points came from Caden Pierre, who finished the night with 18. He was only outscored by Drew Daoust, who used a 19-point second half to finish with 28. After the game, Wolves head coach Eric Schneider stated that "too many turnovers" cost them. The Wolves were led by Chase Romdenne's 17 points, followed by 10 points from Braeden Leist.

The Wolves travel to Denmark on Monday before returning home for Friday night's matchup with Sturgeon Bay on U-102.1. The Eagles have a week of rest before their next game, which is also on Friday night: a home matchup against Gibraltar on 105.1 The GOAT.

Eagles and Wolves Ring in New Year on U-102.1

The first game in 2025 broadcast on U102.1 will come on Friday night as the Algoma Wolves play host to the Southern Door Eagles in Varsity Boys Basketball. The teams are tied atop the Packerland Conference, meeting with identical 3-0 conference records.

Southern Door played 2 games in 2 days as part of the Green Bay Preble Holiday Tournament.  They split the games, losing game one to Mosinee 64-72, then beating Milwaukee Washington 60-71 on December 28th. The top 3 scorers in each game for the Eagle's were Drew Daoust, Lauden Berg, and Caden Pierre, in that order.

Algoma on the other hand has played 2 less games so far this season, including not having played since they beat Peshtigo 48-60 on December 13th. The Wolves average just under 70 points per game behind Parker Lischka, Braeden Leist, Cody Kirchman and Chase Romdenne.

Jacob Nate will have the call from Algoma. Pregame is scheduled for 6:45 pm, followed by a 7:00 pm tip-off.
