Vikings halt Eagles' season on 103.3 The Clipper

The Southern Door Eagles boys' basketball team struggled to get their offense going Friday night as they saw their season end against Denmark 51-34.

Both teams took aim at each other's top players as the Eagles' Drew Daoust and the Vikings' Donovan Short were held in check for much of the game. Hayden Konkol was able to pick up the slack for the Vikings though, scoring 12 of his game-high 18 points in the first half. Daoust was able to score eight points and Taylor Schaefer added seven, but the Eagles found themselves down 24-19 at the break.

The Vikings would see their lead grow by as much as 11 in the second half with Cayden DeGrave scoring all seven of his points after the half and three others scoring at least six points. Jared Hawkey helped keep the Eagles close at times in the second half, scoring 11 of his 13 points after the break.

The Eagles' season ends with a 15-11 record including an 11-5 mark in the Packerland Conference. Head coach Josh Vandenbush praised his young squad for the resiliency they showed after starting the season 0-4.

Southern Door battles Denmark on 103.3 The Clipper

The Southern Door Eagles boys' basketball team look to advance to a second straight regional title game Friday night when they host the Denmark Vikings.

The Eagles were given a scare by the visiting New Holstein Huskies, but were able to pull away late in the second half to win 61-52 in the first round of the WIAA Division 3 Playoffs Tuesday night. Drew Daoust scored 26 points to lead the Eagles while Nic Pierre added 16 and Taylor Schaefer chipped in 10 in the victory. The Vikings earned their spot with a 78-38 thrashing of Two Rivers in their opening-round matchup. UWGB recruit Donovan Short leads the Vikings with 23.5 points and 8.6 rebounds a game while Hayden Konkol serves as a great complement as he averages 16.2 ppg and 5.2 rpg. Konkol is also second on the team in assists with just over two a game.

Short and Konkol combined for 46 points in the team's earlier matchup on November 30th when the Vikings won 72-63. The loss occurred at Denmark's tournament and was a part of the Eagles' season opening four-game losing streak. Four players scored in double figures in the game, led by the since-departed Logan Jeanquart and Nic Pierre's 13 points. A win for the Eagles would not just send them to their second straight regional title game but also break a three game losing streak to the Vikings.

Tim Kowols and Jacob Nate will have the call on 103.3 The Clipper and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com beginning at 6:30 p.m. followed by the opening tip at 7 p.m.

Eagles outlast Huskies on 104.1 WRLU

The Southern Door Eagles were given a scare by the visiting New Holstein Huskies, but were able to pull away late in the second half to win 61-52 in the first round of the WIAA Division 3 Playoffs Tuesday night.

The Eagles were hitting shots early, but the Huskies traded twos for threes to take an early lead in the first half. Jaden Braun and Henry Schnell each hit a trio of three-pointers as the Huskies would pour in nine shots from distance. Drew Daoust would keep things as close as he could, scoring 14 of the Eagles' 26 first-half points as they would find themselves down by seven at the break.

The Huskies would extend their lead by as much as 11, but the Eagles would begin to turn the tide with less than nine minutes to go in the game. With the Eagles down by three, a mishandled ball by Daoust made its way to Nic Pierre, who buried one of his three second-half threes to make it 46-46. With the Huskies in the bonus, Daoust, Pierre, Taylor Schaefer had their opportunities to end the game from there on a 14-6 run to secure the victory. Daoust scored 26 points to lead the Eagles while Pierre added 16 and Schaefer chipped in 10 in the victory. Braun led the way for the Huskies with 25 points with Schnell scoring 14 points and Keaton Wagner adding 10 points.

The Eagles will now face off against Denmark on Friday in the regional semifinal at the Eagle Gymnasium. The Vikings earned the trip by beating Two Rivers at home. Denmark beat Southern Door in one of their first few games of the season. The Eagles will seek vengeance on 104.1 WRLU with Tim Kowols and Jacob Nate on the call beginning at 6:30 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the opening tip at 7 p.m.

Southern Door hosts playoff opener against New Holstein on 104.1 WRLU

The Southern Door Eagles boys' basketball team hopes to start a streak of a different kind Tuesday when they open the WIAA Division 3 Playoffs against New Holstein.

The Eagles hit a speed bump in their final week of the season, falling to Kewaunee last Tuesday 61-40 before losing 70-60  to NEW Lutheran on Friday. Led Drew Daoust (19.5 ppg, 3.4 ppg), Taylor Schaefer (10.1 ppg, 6.5 rpg), and Jared Hawkey (9.2 ppg, 8.9 rpg, 4.0 apg), the Eagles had won eight of their previous 10 games with a chance at claiming a share of the Packerland crown in the final week.

The Huskies only have two wins to their credit this season with their last one coming against Saint Lawerence Seminary on January 22nd by a score of 68-55. They are led by Phil Casper, who averages 12.6 points and 8.1 rebounds per game.

Tim Kowols and Jacob Nate will have the call on 104.1 WRLU beginning at 6:30 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the opening tip at 7 p.m.
