Culver's Student-Athlete of the Week: Southern Door volleyball's Jackie Atkins

It takes a good defense to win championships, and Southern Door senior libero and Culver's Door County Student-Athlete of the Week Jackie Atkins takes pride in doing just that.

Atkins admits her small stature led her to the position but says she has always loved playing defense ever since she started playing volleyball in third grade. That strength has led the Eagles to their first-ever Packerland Conference championship this season, thanks in part to Atkins' impressive dig totals all year long. Atkins believes this team is special.

Atkins' favorite subjects are math and science and hopes to play volleyball collegiately after graduation. After defeating Roncalli on Tuesday, Southern Door battles St. Mary's Springs at home beginning at 7 p.m.

Southern Door football closes out 2019 season

Southern Door High School's football team ends the season on the road in a non-conference game against Bonduel. The two teams have just one common opponent in Peshtigo. Southern Door fell at Peshtigo last week 42-27 while the Bears were victorious against them in Week Two, 54-0. Bonduel is another power running team. They average 180 yards per game on the ground. Southern Door has struggled against that this season with a young defensive line. The Bears enter the game with a 6-2 record.

For Southern Door, they will look to counter with some newly found balance. Quarterbacks Marcus Marchant and Alex Daoust the past two weeks have had success through the air. Freshman receiver Jack Peterson has been their favorite target, or at least the most explosive. On the ground, running back Nick Baudhuin is always a threat. Pregame is at 6:30 with kickoff at 7 PM on More FM 102.1.

Southern Door halftime lead slips away

Southern Door High School's football team got off to a fast start Friday night thanks to three first half Peshtigo turnovers but the script was flipped in the second half. The Bulldogs pulled away late to down Southern Door 42-27. Alex Daoust intercepted Peshtigo's Will Boettcher on the first two possessions with Marcus Marchant scooping up a fumble on the third.

Nick Baudhuin had a 27-yard touchdown run off left tackle and Daoust threw a 16-yard score to capitalize on those turnovers giving Southern Door a 12-0 lead. Senior running back Jerad Jandt brought Peshtigo back. At half, it was 20-16. In the final 24 minutes, Jandt shone with several rushing touchdowns helping Peshtigo to the win. Southern Door's only score of the second half was an Alex Daoust option keeper on third-and-goal from the 14. Southern Door ends the year next Friday at Bonduel.

Southern Door football at Peshtigo on 102.1 Friday

Southern Door High School's football team wraps up the 2019 season on the road in Peshtigo and Bonduel the next two weeks. Friday's assignment against the Bulldogs is a tough one with Peshtigo still undefeated in the MONLPC Large.

Southern Door debuted an air raid offense last week against Kewaunee with Marcus Marchant taking over as quarterback. Marchant found Jack Peterson for a score on the first offensive possession and was able to move the ball for much of the first half with other opportunities fizzling out near the Storm red zone. Given the weather forecast, expect running back Nick Baudhuin to feature more prominently Friday. The Door County Medical Center Pregame begins at 6:30 with the kickoff at 7 PM on More FM 102.1.

The Eagles return to the court Thursday night at Gibraltar. The Vikings knocked off Sturgeon Bay on the road Tuesday.

Southern Door football hosts Kewaunee Friday

Southern Door High School football enters Friday's game at 3-3 needing a win over Kewaunee to remain in the chase for a postseason berth. The Eagles started slow losing their first two games of the year against Winneconne and Wausau East. The middle of the season has been a hot-and-cold stretch with easy victories sandwiching a blowout loss at Coleman. Working in the Eagles favor is the forfeit victory last week against Sturgeon Bay which acts as a de facto bye week. Southern Door has had 14 days to focus on the Storm.

Southern Door will rely on another big game from Nick Baudhuin on the ground. The Eagles defense will have to contend with a balanced Kewaunee offensive attack. Storm quarterback Ryan Carmichael can hand off to running back Owen Kudick or deliver passes to Max Hanrahan and Benjamin Heim. The Door County Medical Center pregame show starts at 6:30 with kickoff at 7 PM on More FM 102.1.

Slezewski making his comeback

Southern Door junior Griffin Slezewski never realized how much he loved to run until he stopped being able to walk. Slezewski was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia back in January, which was when he was already battling wrestlers on the mat to make a second straight trip to Madison.  What followed was six months of treatments at a Green Bay hospital where only family was allowed to see him as he fought the disease head on, walking 250 miles in the progress. Slezewski was happy to get back to normal when he returned to school slowly got back into the routine of the cross country season.

When Slezewski had his first competition since late January at the Chilton Invitational, his father Kevin admits it was emotional.

Slezewski’s mother Tracy says it was amazing to see the reaction of other athletes and their families see their son return to action.

His brother Ben is a senior cross country runner on the varsity team. He says it was great to have a familiar sight at practice.

Slezewski hopes to finish the cross country season on a high note and get ready for the upcoming wrestling season. After Slezewski's diagnosis, community members donated over $12,000 to help defray the costs of treatments along with other signs of support, something the family will not soon forget. The Southern Door cross country teams head to Reedsville Thursday afternoon for an invitational at 4 p.m.
