Southern Door boys get revenge at Kewaunee

The first matchup between Southern Door and Kewaunee High Schools in boys’ basketball was arguably the game of the year, a 44-43 win for the Storm in Brussels. Thursday night’s rematch was an excellent encore. The road team won again, the Eagles edging the Storm 53-48. The teams split the season series, and both finished at 14-2 in Packerland play. There is a tie for the conference championship. First place is a familiar result for Southern Door, they repeat after winning the conference outright in 2018-2019. Kewaunee’s championship is its first in decades.

Southern Door and Kewaunee both have byes in the first round of the postseason tournament. In Division 4, the Eagles will play the winner of (11) Algoma and (6) Cedar Grove-Belgium. The Storm gets (5) Kiel or (12) North Fond du Lac next Friday in Division 4.

Englebert, Slezewski fall in state wrestling's opening round

Southern Door's Grant Englebert and Griffin Slezewski overcame challenges just to make the state tournament.

Englebert, who opened the season with an injured shoulder, lost his first-round matchup to Stratford's Jacob Heiden 8-7. Slezewski beat cancer to return to the mats in Madison for the first time since his freshman year. He saw his season end with a major decision defeat to Ashton Miess.

Slezewski, Englebert return to state wrestling meet

Congratulations to Griffin Slezewski and Grant Englebert.  Both qualified for the State Tournament by finishing third in their respective brackets yesterday at the Bonduel Sectional.  Both will compete in the opening round Thursday night at the Kohl Center in Madison.

Griffin started the day with two very close wins to make the finals.  In his first match, the score was tied 2-2 late in the third period when his opponent gave up a point for illegally locking hands making the score 3-2.  At that point his opponent gave him the escape to make the score 4-2 and look for the tie with a takedown.  Griff was quick to get on a leg attach and hold on for the 4-2 victory.  In his second match it was a similar situation.  Up 4-2 late in the third period, Griff gave up an escape to make the score 4-3.  After the escape, Griff quickly got on a leg attack again to end the match with the 4-3 win.  With the win Griffin secured a spot in the finals and a trip to State.  In the finals, after a scoreless 1st period, Griffin was caught in a cradle and gave up 3 point near fall in the second period.  While fighting the cradle he injured his ribs.  He then gave up a reversal in the third period to make the final score 0-5.  In his wrestle back match, his ribs didn't hold out and, he couldn't exert any force.  On site trainers were thinking either a deep muscle bruise or possibly cartilage bruising between his ribs.

Grant gave up an early takedown in his first match but then quickly earned the reversal and 3 near fall.  He then gave up an escape to make it 5-3.  The score stayed close until the third period when Grant had a nice leg attack.  He then worked through a scramble, and caught a tight cradle to earn the pin.  In the semifinal, Grant just couldn't get his offense going.  After giving up two high C takedowns and a reversal, he was down 4-6 midway through the third.  From there he pushed the pace and earned a stalling point but just couldn't get in close to get the needed takedown.  At this point Grant needed two wins to earn a trip to state.  In his first consolation match he was able to get the quick takedown and turn.   In the third place match he controlled the match from start to finish but despite a few tight arm bars couldn't get the turns or pin.  The 6-1 win was enough to finish third and he did not get a wrestle back.

Brodie gave his best and gained some valuable experience.  Unfortunately, a couple costly mistakes cost him the matches.  For only his second year in wrestling he's doing well.  His attitude, desire and work ethic will help him to improve quickly and steadily.  We'll be looking for big things from Brodie next season.

The first round of the State tournament for Division 2 & 3 starts at 7:15 Thursday night.  Griffin and Grant will start with wrestlers that took second in their respective sectional tournaments.  Sectional champions get a first round bye and wrestle the winner of the 2-3 match up on Friday morning.  The loser of the first round match is done for the season.  Griffin's first match will be against Ashton Miess, a 23-6 freshman from Riverdale.  Grant's first match will be against Jacob Heiden, a 39-8 junior from Stratford.  Both are uncommon opponents.  We have not seen Riverdale this season and Grant was still recovering from his shoulder injury when we wrestled Stratford earlier this season.  We'll work on the couple mistakes from this week but at this point in the season, its mostly working on what we do best and being mentally ready that makes the difference.

Thanks,

Jerry Englebert

Southern Door boys dominate Algoma

The Southern Door High School boys’ basketball team was truly dominant on Friday night as they made the trip to the shores of Lake Michigan. The Eagles defeated Algoma, 68-25. To put into context how good Southern Door was defensively, the 25 points allowed Friday night was the lowest point total for Algoma this season, by a hefty margin. If you take out the beginning of the year, Algoma has scored at least 40 points in every game since the New Year, until last night.

The Wolves play three games this upcoming week beginning Monday at Sturgeon Bay. Southern Door begins to look to a rematch with Kewaunee. The Storm edged the Eagles by a point earlier this season.

Coach celebreates successful regional meet

SD Wrestling started the state tournament series yesterday at the Brillion Regional. Congratulations to Griffin Slezewski 126 and Grant Englebert 152 who both earned Regional Championships. Brodie Overbeck also qualified for sectionals with a second place finish at 285.

They will be competing in the Bonduel Sectional next week Saturday. Due to gym space, the tournament will be held at Shawano High School.

Griffin has been working tirelessly to regain his strength and stamina since being cleared in August. Today that work paid off as he was ready to compete. Complete control from start to finish, easily earning the early pin in the finals. For Griffin, just making this years tournament was a great achievement but his goals won’t stop there. After missing last season’s tournament, he has himself in a very good position to earn a return trip to State next week. His first opponent will be Brett Palubicki from Crandon who is currently honorable mention in the rankings with a 27-7 record.

Grant also had an early season scare with a shoulder injury. He worked hard in physical therapy to rehab and strengthen his shoulder to avoid surgery. After a slow start in his semi final match he earned a second period pin. He then dominated a much better opponent in the finals also earning an early pin. Grant will be looking to defend last years sectional title and earn his second trip to State. His first opponent next week will be Blade Niewiadomski from Rosholt who is currently ranked #9 with a record of 36-5.

For Brodie we felt his best shot was at 285. After wrestling 220 all year he worked hard to adjust to the extra weight and difference in wrestling 285. Brodie wrestled a really good semi final match. He also started the finals with a beautiful double leg takedown showing is athleticism. After almost getting a few half Nelson’s he tried an arm bar and got caught in a roll. Still happy with advancing but, knowing there is opportunity to do even better. Brodie’s first opponent will be John Farkas of Amherst who is currently ranked 11th with a record of 34-5.

For the rest of the team this was the end of their competition season. Tough ending, and certainly disappointing for some but this is a special group of wrestlers. I know they will be supporting their teammates and working together to help in practice. We’re a fairly young group with desire to be better which will propel them into next season. With great effort will come great reward.

Our lone senior this year was Ben Slezewski. After years of being asked, Ben finally decided to give wrestling a try. Bens work ethic in the weight room and wrestling room benefitted the team even before he officially joined. He’s one of those hard working kids all coaches look forward to having. I think if you asked him he would say he wishes he would have joined sooner. I know I wish he would have. He is the type of person we all want to know and the type we all want our kids to be with.

Three Eagles soar to sectional wrestling

Southern Door was able to push three across to the Division 3 Individual Sectional Wrestling meet next weekend. In Brillion, Southern Door's Grant Englebert and Griffin Slezewski won regional titles and Brodie Overbeck took second at 220 pounds to clinch his first sectional berth in Division 3.

Southern Door and Sturgeon Bay go to overtime

Sturgeon Bay and Southern Door High Schools clashed Tuesday in girls’ basketball in a contest that took overtime to decide. Southern Door walked away with the hard-fought 50-45 victory, coming from as many as 14 points down. Nicole Norton had 20 points for Southern Door. Sturgeon Bay got 14 points from Morgan Reinhardt and Greta Meleen added 11 but it was not enough to pull past the Eagles.

Southern Door improves to 8-5 in the Packerland Conference, keeping pace with Gibraltar for third place. Both teams are a game back of Peshtigo. The Bulldogs’ next game is against undefeated Kewaunee so a logjam for second place is possible by the weekend. The Eagles host Algoma Friday. Sturgeon Bay’s next game is also against Algoma but that doesn’t happen until Monday.

Eagles clipped by Lions

The Southern Door girls' basketball team fell behind by nine in the first half and could not recover in its 57-44 defeat to the Brillion Lions.

Down 27-18 at the break, both teams were able to open up the scoring a little more. The Eagles did not fair much better in the second half however, getting outscored 30-26. The team plays again Tuesday night at home against Sevastopol for a 7 p.m. tip.

Southern Door girls' basketball visit Brillion

The Southern Door girls' basketball team hopes to secure their third non-conference win of the season when they travel to Brillion for a Monday night tilt.

The Eagles have split their previous four non-conference games this season and their last eight games overall. After winning their previous two games, the Eagles hope to rebound from Friday's loss to Peshtigo. Brillion has split their last six games, which includes a 41-24 loss to Sheboygan Falls. The Lions are led by Megan Schuman, who averages 16 points and seven rebounds a game.

The game tips off at 7:15 p.m.

Culver's Student-Athlete of the Week: Southern Door's Grant Englebert

Southern Door's Grant Englebert has not run away from a challenge this season, but rather has embraced them at every turn.

Englebert started his senior campaign nursing a shoulder injury, but a brace has allowed him to continue to compete at a high level without having to change his style. A state place winner last year, Englebert has followed it up by placing at every tournament this season including first place at Hustisford on Saturday. Competing at a high level means facing the best of the best all season long, like a close loss to defending state champion and nationally ranked Matty Bianchi of Two Rivers. Englebert says he would rather face the top-flight competition rather than cruise through the season unchallenged.

Englebert says he is undecided about what his next steps will be after high school, but added his current favorite subject is biology. The Culver's Student-Athlete of the Week will have two weeks off before his next action, the WIAA Regional Tournament at Brillion featuring Brillion, Mishicot, Oneida Nation, and Reedsville.

Claflin gets 1000th point

Southern Door's Ryan Claflin made the record books Saturday to highlight the local slate of boys' basketball action.

Claflin scored his 1000th point as the Eagles soared past Peshtigo 61-37. Claflin registered the feat on the same night Nick Cochart and Kyle Thayse were inducted into the Southern Door Booster Club Athletics Hall of Fame, Picture courtesy of Southern Door County School District Facebook page.

Southern Door successful in Hustisford

Yesterday was the last regular season tournament of the season for the Varsity.  We had some wrestlers that had already met their WIAA maximum number of tournaments but anyone that had missed a tournament for illness, injury or other commitment was able to wrestler at Hustisford.  The teams in this tournament seem to be different every year as teams look to make up meets missed due to snow cancellations or other issues.  The core group of D3 teams continues to be the draw for us to take the long ride.

Top finishers yesterday were first place Grant Englebert.  Second place Austin Falish and Kyle Conard.  Dylan Wessel placed Third.  Grant looked very strong with two pins and then a dominating finals match over Steven Johnson of Lake Country Lutheran who is ranked honorable mention in D3.  Austin Falish battled hard all day beating higher seeds to make the finals.  Kyle Conard also looked good and cruised into the finals.  In the finals match he looked to have earned a pin early in the second period before getting injured and getting caught.  Dylan Wessel earned three pins on the day and dominated all three of those matches.

As a team we continue to improve and extend matches but we area still not capitalizing on opportunities.  We looked better in neutral today and more aggressive which was great to see and something we can build on.  With two weeks before regionals, practice this week will be spent trying to recuperate and clear our minds in order to be ready for the post season.  This coming Saturday the JV will be at Green Bay Preble and February 15th we'll be in Brillion for Regionals.

Regionals will include Brillion, Mishicot, Oneida Nation, Reedsville and Southern Door.  Brillion is the favorite as they are ranked #8 but Reedsville is honorable mention and Mishicot is also looking better all the time.

Coach Englebert
