Eagles wrestlers capture third at Kewaunee

Saturday our Southern Door wrestlers were at the Kewaunee Invitational.

Everyone wrestled well and showed marked improvement.  We worked hard at practice last week getting out from the bottom.  At Kewaunee, everyone was much quicker getting up and stringing moves together.  We also focused on scoring in many different situations.  After getting outscored in the first two tournaments this season we turned it around this week outscoring our opponents 213-150.  Despite missing three varsity wrestlers we were able to place 3rd as a team.  Good tournament to learn from and build confidence as we get ready for Oshkosh on the Water.

Individually Spencer Slezweski and Brodie Overbeck won their brackets.  Both Spencer and Mason Motquin were at 120 and both made the finals.  We chose to double forfeit so neither wrestler earned a win or took a loss and Spencer won by criteria.  Very good day for both Spencer and Mason with 3 pins.  Brodie also wrestled very well with 4 pins to earn the title at 285.

Second place finishers were Wyatt Wilke, Trevor Englebert and Hayden Jeanquart.  Nice start for Wyatt in his first individual high school tournament after coming back from injury.  Trevor looked good but let a match slip.  Hayden continued to wrestle well and had an early lead before losing in the final.  We'll look for a rematch in our conference meet.

Third place finishers were Cameron Robinson and Thomas Grosbeier.

Eagles boys pounced by Lions

The Southern Door boys' basketball team lost its pace against Brillion on Monday night in its 65-46 loss.

Down by only seven points at the end of the first half, the Lions put some distance between the two teams as they outscored the Eagles 32-20 in the final frame. Leading the way for the Eagles was Drew Daoust, who scored 21 points in the game including nine points in the second half. The Lions were led by Jeremy Lorenz and his 18 points. Two other players scored in double figures for Brillion is they kept their undefeated record intact.

Eagles boys host Brillion

The Southern Door Eagles boys' basketball team look to have their first winning streak of the season on Monday when they host Brillion.

The Eagles captured their first victory of the season on Friday when they beat Sevastopol 77-64. Drew Daoust scored 20 points in the victory while also getting double-digit scoring performances from Jared Hawkey (17), Taylor Schaefer, and Logan Jeanquart (12 apiece). The Lions are 6-0 on the season after avenging their sectional final loss to Wrightstown on Saturday with a 64-50 in a tournament hosted by Kaukauna. It was the Lions that ended the Eagles season last year in the regional final.

Tip is set for 7:30 p.m.

Jeanquart leads Eagles wrestlers at Battle on the Bay

Saturday we took part in the "Battle on the Bay" wrestling tournament at Bay Port. The weather provided a tough start to the day. The snow prevented a few teams from participating in the tournament which cut the field to 24 teams. Thankfully, we made the trip without any difficulty. Despite missing a few teams the tournament kept its reputation as one of the toughest. Each weight class was well represented with some of the best wrestlers in the state.

As a team we lack experience and last year's limited season didn't help. That inexperience showed and led to missed opportunities. For over half of the team this was their first individual tournament of their high school careers and it showed. We wrestled hard and showed improvement but need to improve quickly to reach our goals. The match experience is greatly needed but each wrestler will need to reflect on the video and notes from this weekend to maximize the opportunity.

Congratulations to Hayden Jeanquart who was our top finisher placing 4th at 170. Hayden started with three pins, including a comeback win, to make the semi-finals. Hayden has been working hard in practice and it is starting to pay off. Looking for more good things from Hayden.

Attached are some photos from Bayport taken by Stacy Motquin. Also attached are results from Tuesday's duals.

Eagles wrestling goes 3-2 in opening weekend

Wrestling is officially underway! It is great to be back to normal tournaments again this year. Yesterday was our first competition of the 2021 - 2022 wrestling season and the first varsity tournament for over half of our wrestlers. We competed in the Schoenherr Duals in Stratford along with Baron, Crandon, Phillips and Wausau East. As a team we finished 3rd of the six teams with a 3-2 record. Attached are the results.

The duals this weekend provided a great starting point to learn from and gauge where we stand both as a team and individually. There was a wide range of skills and mix of experience on the opposing teams. Stratford won the tournament, and showed again, why they continue to be ranked so highly with several returning state place winners. Teams also had new inexperienced wrestlers which gave our wrestlers a chance to wrestle some of the best and also matches where they could work on their skills.

Our numbers are down a little from the past couple years but we are fortunate to be able to fill most of the weight classes. With only 3 seniors on the team we are young but hard working and eager to learn. This year's sophomore class saw very limited mat time last year due to the pandemic and the freshman are just getting started so we are looking for rapid improvement as both groups gain needed experience.

As a team we came out a little flat in our first dual with Crandon. Nerves, anxiety, conditioning and inexperience all played factors. As coaches we felt we looked better as the day progressed. As a team and individually we made some mistakes which we need to correct but overall it was a good day. Congratulations to sophomores Mason Motquin, Spencer Slezewski and Trevor Englebert who each went 4-1 and placed second in their weight classes.

Next week is a busy week with a double dual Tuesday at Gillet Suring with Crivitz followed by, Battle on the Bay, Saturday at Bayport. Battle on the Bay is one of the tougher tournaments in the state and is a stiff challenge for everyone attending.

Eagles girls look to get win vs. Peshtigo

The Southern Door girls' basketball team look to get their first win of the season when they welcome Peshtigo to the Eagle Gym.

The Eagles fell to Oconto 68-31 earlier this week. Behind a 22 point performance by Sydney Lund, the Bulldogs topped Sevastopol earlier this week 58-45.

Eagles boys face Oconto at home

The Southern Door boys' basketball team hopes to get their Packerland slate started on a happy note when they host Oconto in Brussels on Thursday.

The Eagles are 0-2 so far this season, dropping their non-conference games to Sheboygan Falls and Denmark. Packerland play is where they have shined in years past including a 15-1 conference mark last year. The Blue Devils won its first game of the year last week against Wabeno Laona 74-60.

Tip is set for 7:30 p.m.

Eagle girls topped by Oconto

The Southern Door Eagle girls ran into a buzz saw Tuesday night as the Oconto Blue Devils pulled away from the Eagles 68-31 at Oconto.  The Blue Devils jumped to a 35-15 lead at intermission and cruised to the easy home victory.  Addisyn Viestez took game honors with a team-high 16 points, while Leah Allan added 12 and Kyanne Wusterbarth contributed 11 more for the Blue Devils.  Southern Door (0-5) will now play host to Peshtigo on Friday night in Brussels.

Eagle boys fall to Denmark

A balanced scoring attack by the Southern Door Eagles was not enough, as they dropped a non-conference game to the Denmark Vikings 72-63 on the road.

The Eagles were able to hang in with the Vikings with a high-scoring 40-35 deficit, but could not overcome Denmark in the rivalry between to old Packerland Conference opponents.

The Eagles were led by Nic Pierre and Logan Jenaquart with 13 points each, while Drew Daoust and Jared Hawkey each chipped in 11 more.

The Eagles were able to stay close with some great shooting of 7/13 from the three-point arc, but Denmark pulled out the victory at home.
