Veeser's kick sends Eagles soaring on U-102.1

A back-and-forth fourth quarter set the stage for Lance Veeser's heroics in a 17-14 Southern Door victory over Shiocton Friday night in Brussels.

The two teams exchanged turnovers and stunted drives before Caleb Delwiche found Lauden Berg on a deep route late in the first quarter, putting the Eagles ahead 7-0. It would stay that way until late in the third quarter, the Chiefs' Kyle Bergsbaken scampered in from six yards out to bring his team to within one point. The Eagles would extend their lead two drives later, capitalizing on a Landon Vandertie interception with a touchdown run from Damontrae Meeks to make it 14-6 midway through the fourth quarter.

On the next drive, Bergsbaken engineered a game-tying drive set up on a long touchdown pass to Brodey Sleets with less than three minutes left. With just seconds left in the game, Lance Veeser put the Eagles ahead with a 28-yard field goal.

The Chiefs had one last chance to force overtime, but the game ended on Berg's second interception to give the Eagles their first win.

The Eagles are back in action next Friday night when they travel to Bonduel to face the Bears. U-102.1 will carry the game beginning at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the call of the game with Jacob Nate at 7 p.m.

Eagles welcome Indians on U-102.1

The Southern Door Eagles look to even their season record when they return home to face Shiocton on Friday night.

The Eagles' slim 15-14 deficit ballooned to a 36-20 loss to New Holstein last Friday night on the road. They leaned on Landon Vandertie to get the offense and the defense going as he rushed for 93 yards and a touchdown as the top running back while accumulating 8.5 tackles as one of the team's linebackers. Lauden Berg caugh both of Caleb Delwiche's passes, racking up 68 yards and a score.

The Indians would love to even up their record too after losing last week to Iola-Scandinavia 28-8 in front of its home crowd. Kyle Bergsbaken carried the offense, rushing for 55 yards and a touchdown while going 15-28 and over 170 yards through the air. Wyatt Hess was his main recipient with six grabs for 81 yards. Brett Singler caused problems for the Thunderbirds as he had 10 tackles (5.0 TFLs) and three sacks.

Tim Kowols and Bryan Mazur will have the call on U-102.1 beginning at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the kickoff at 7 p.m.

The other Packerland Conference of local importance scheduled for Friday night is Kewaunee traveling to Brillion for a 7 p.m. kickoff.

Eagles football hits the road for season opener on U-102.1

The Southern Door football team will open its 2025 campaign on the road Friday night when it battles the New Holstein Huskies.

Under the tutelage of Scott Mallien, the Eagles finished last season 7-4 with a 6-1 mark in the Packerland Conference. Their season ended in Level 2 of the WIAA Playoffs with a 50-8 loss to Wrightstown. After losing many of their postseason honorees to graduation, the Eagles potentially welcome All-Conference performers Lauden Berg (Offensive End, Defensive Back), Landon Vandertie (Linebacker, Offensive Lineman), and Talon Mueller (Defensive Back).

Last year, the Huskies saw their season end against the Eagles in Level 1 of the WIAA Playoffs. Tied 7-7 at the break, the Eagles scored 17 unanswered points to sprint past the Huskies to the second round. It spoiled a 6-4 season and a second place finish in the Eastern Wisconsin Conference. They welcome back All-Conference performers Logan Muellenbach, Landon Floyd, Ely Kohlman, Joseph Abrams, Jacob Schneider, and Griffin Abler.

Coverage from New Holstein on U-102.1 begins at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the kickoff at 7 p.m.
