Southern Door wrestling battles, falls to Kewaunee

Battling sickness and a tough opponent, the Southern Door wrestling team came up shy in its attempt to win the Packerland Conference, losing to Kewaunee 51-24.

The Eagles won three of its contested matches with Cody Nellis also picking up points as a forfeit. Riley Phillips picked up an exciting 10-8 decision at 195 pounds while Kyle Conard and Grant Englebert picked up pins in the loss. The Eagles head to Hustisford this weekend for their final tournament ahead of regionals in two weeks.

Southern Door, Kewaunee battle for Packerland crown on 104.1 WRLU

It is down to two teams for the Packerland Conference wrestling crown when Kewaunee welcomes Southern Door Thursday night.

Both teams are undefeated in Packerland Conference duals this season with the Storm still having to face Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol next week at home to close out the dual season. The Storm and the Eagles also each competed at Saturday's invitational at Sheboygan North. For the Storm, Jack Severin won his weight class while Logan Steinhorst (2nd place), Matt Wery (7th place), Max Severin (4th place), Mitchell Thompson (5th Place), Jason Reinke (4th place) and Jacob VanGoethem (7th place) also reached the podium. The Eagles brought an abbreviated line up to the tournament with Grant Englebert pacing the team with a 3rd place finish. Brodie Overbeck (5th), Kyle Conard (6th), and Griffin Slezewski (6th) also placed. This is the second straight year the conference title has been on the line heading into the dual with Kewaunee winning last year's match-up 53-18.

Tim Kowols will have the call from Kewaunee on 104.1 WRLU beginning at 6:30 p.m. with the prematch show followed by the first whistle at 7 p.m.

Southern Door boys strong in win over Oconto

Southern Door High School boys basketball rolled Tuesday night, including 42 in the second half, as they knocked off Oconto 71-51. Ryan Claflin was kept quiet in the last game against NEW Lutheran allowing Alex Daoust to go off. Tuesday was the opposite. Claflin shined with 30 points. He was backed up by Nate Everard’s 13 and Daoust’s 11 points.

Southern Door has bounced back from a tough one-point loss against Kewaunee to win their last two contests by 20. They will need every bit of that momentum as they head into a grueling stretch. In addition to games against Peshtigo, Sturgeon Bay and Kewaunee still on the calendar, Southern Door gets Roncalli and Luxemburg-Casco in non-conference play. The Eagles take the court against the Jets Thursday in Brussels.

The win improves the Eagles’ mark to 7-2 in the conference, a game back of Sturgeon Bay and Kewaunee. Southern Door has games against both those teams later in the season. Ryan Claflin was held to only 15 points but the Eagles made adjustments and Alex Daoust took advantage netting 29, a season high.

Eagles set up for possible wrestling crown after sweep

Next week's dual meet against Kewaunee officially got more interesting after Southern Door swept Peshtigo and Oconto in a pair of dual meets at Sturgeon Bay Thursday night.

Brady Tooley pinned Kyle Rupert in just over a minute while Grant Englebert and Drew Defere were able to pick up bonus points in their victories.  Jon LaForce and Kody Klimek picked up pins for the Bulldogs. Southern Door topped Oconto 72-0 with Brodie Overbeck and Cody Nellis picking up pins for the Eagles.

Southern Door travels for Packerland duals on 104.1 WRLU

Southern Door will have a short trip Thursday night as it travels to Sturgeon Bay for a double dual against Peshtigo and Oconto.

It has been well over a week for since the Eagles last wrestled on January 14th at Two Rivers in a 45-27 defeat. Oconto and Peshtigo have struggled to field full squads in recent years with only five Blue Devils wrestling at January's Manawa Invitational and four Bulldogs getting matches at December's On The Water Classic. Last year's matchups were lopsided affairs due to forfeits.

The double dual meet has been moved up from its original start time to 6:30 p.m. Tim Kowols and Greg Letter will have the call of the Southern Door matches beginning at 6 p.m. with the prematch show followed by first whistle at 6:30 p.m. with Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol matches being called as time permits. The matches can be heard on 104.1 WRLU and streamed worldwide at DoorCountyDailyNews.com, DoorKewauneeHighSchoolSports.com, and the DoorCountyDailyNews.com mobile app.

FULL INTERVIEW WITH COACH JERRY ENGLEBERT

Southern Door boys fly past Gibraltar

The Southern Door High School boys basketball team took flight against Gibraltar Friday night in Fish Creek, 71-48. Ryan Claflin put up video game numbers. Number one in powder blue had 29 points, 13 rebounds, and five assists. The secondary statistics were even better. Claflin was 12-16 from the floor, 75 percent. Luke Steebs was the leading scorer for Gibraltar with 11.

Tuesday night will see first place in the Packerland on the line as undefeated Kewaunee travels to Brussels against Southern Door (6-1). Gibraltar visits Sturgeon Bay.

Southern Door drops dual to Two Rivers on 104.1 WRLU

Southern Door battled but came up short in Two Rivers Tuesday, losing its wrestling dual 45-27 on 104.1 WRLU.

Raiders' 195-pound wrestler Anderson Kopidlansky won the first contested match of the evening, winning by technical fall over Riley Phillips 16-1. After Southern Door got their first points via a forfeit, Blake Jensen was pinned by Connor Sanford at 285 pounds. Alec Guilette got the first contested win for the Eagles with an 11-4 decision over Isaiah Massman at 113 pounds. The Raiders would score points in six of the final weight classes, highlighted by two-time defending state champion Matty Bianchi capturing an 8-2 decision over Grant Englebert in a battle of two of the best wrestlers in the state. Griffin Slezewski and Brady Tooley got the other two wins for the Eagles, each registering pins at 132 pounds and 170 pounds respectively.

The Eagles will have one of their longest breaks of the season before they wrestle again next Thursday night against Oconto and Peshtigo at Sturgeon Bay High School.

Southern Door travels to Two Rivers on 104.1 WRLU

The Southern Door Eagles wrestling teams will hit the road for a dual meet for the first time since December when it travels to face Two Rivers on 104.1 WRLU.

The Eagles went 2-3 at a quintuple dual hosted by Stratford in December before going 2-1 in recent weeks at home, including last Thursday's win over Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol. Grant Englebert and Griffin Slezewski continue their strong starts to the season including being the top place winners for the team at last weekend's Cutler Classic in New London. Two Rivers are coming off a week layoff after topping New Holstein last Tuesday. The Purple Raiders are of course led by Matty Bianchi, who won his second straight state title last season after playing spoiler for Luxemburg-Casco's Bryce Bosman's perfect career in WIAA state matches. Tim Kowols and Greg Letter will have the call on 104.1 WRLU beginning at 6 p.m. with the pre-match show followed by the first whistle at 6:30 p.m.

Southern Door successful at New London Wrestling Invite

Saturday our full team (varsity and JV) competed at the Cutler Classic Invitational wrestling tournament in New London. Thankfully snowstorm Charlotte took a different path. It's always nice when we can travel and compete together.

As a team we were very up and down Saturday. We pulled a few upsets but were also upset a few times. We are seeing some good improvement at times but still way too many mistakes. We seem to be struggling to find consistency and hit our stride. We wrestle at Two Rivers Tuesday night. After that we will have a weekend off which might be perfect timing for us to regroup and heal up for the home stretch.

Top finishers were Grant Englebert and Griffin Slezewski. At 152 Grant earned a first round bye then scored a quick pin in his second match. Grant then faced Hunter Mashl of DePere. Mashl is currently ranked #11 in division #1. Grant earned a first period takedown then gave up a stalling point in the third period but held on for a 2-1 win. In the finals Grant faced Wyler Lubeck of Wisconsin Rapids currently ranked #3 in Division #1. Lubeck earned a takedown right at the end of the first period to go up 2-0 and was able to keep Grant on his heels the rest of the match. Both wrestlers were close to scoring on numerous occasions throughout the match but Lubeck was just a bit better today.

At 132 Griffin also earned a first round bye. He was in control of his second before winning by injury default. In his third match he ran into Cade Schmitz of Oshkosh North. Schmitz is currently ranked #3 in division #1 and also won the Oshkosh on the Water tournament. After the loss to Schmitz, Griff bounced back with two wins to earn a third place finish. Griffin has been working extremely hard all season to re-build his endurance after his illness. Several times this season Griffin had been leading matches going into the third period but wasn't able to stay strong to the end. Since Christmas we have made wrestling specific endurance a focus and it was nice to see it pay off today.

Tuesdays match at Two Rivers will be another good test. They are lower in numbers than they have been in the recent past but they still have several solid wrestlers. They are lead by two time state champion (junior) Matty Bianchi.

Southern Door girls scratch out win

The Southern Door High School girls basketball team improved to 6-3 on the season by scratching out an ugly, low-scoring win against Algoma Friday. The Eagles topped the Wolves 38-34 as they erased a five-point halftime deficit by cranking up the defense. Algoma managed only eight points in the second half.

With the loss, Algoma falls to 4-7 this season. The next game for both teams will happen Tuesday night. Southern Door hosts Gibraltar and Algoma travels to Sturgeon Bay.

Southern Door wrestling tops Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol on 104.1 WRLU

Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol won more matches but it was Southern Door picking up the dual meet win by a score of 54-21 on 104.1 WRLU Thursday night.

Only seven of the 14 weight classes had contested matches with the Clippeneers winning four of them. Nick West pinned Brodie Overbeck in the second period and Wyatt Coburn registered one of his own against Dylan Wessel to break up a string of forfeits given up by Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol. The Eagles' Griffin Slezewski and Kyle Conard got pins of their to clinch the win for Southern Door but even up the contested matches at two wins apiece. The most exciting match of the night went down to the wire as Clippeneers senior wrestler David Condra got a two-point reversal as time ran out against Eagles newcomer Jonas Jandrin to secure the victory. The Southern Door's Grant Englebert and  Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol's Drew Barganz closed out the evening with pins for their respective teams. Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol pinned their way through the exhibition matches with Sam Abel picking up two wins while Julia Gregory and Ben Roman each picked up one.

Both teams head to New London for a tournament on Saturday. Southern Door's next dual at Two Rivers will air on 104.1 WRLU Tuesday beginning at 6 p.m. with the prematch show followed by the opening whistle at 6:30  p.m.

Southern Door, Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol wrestle on 104.1 WRLU

Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol and Southern Door will renew their rivalry on the mat Thursday night when the two teams wrestle on 104.1 WRLU.

There have limited opportunities for the two sides to battle head to head so far this season with the two teams both competing at last month's On The Water Classic in Oshkosh and sharing the gym for double-dual against Bay Port and Gillett-Suring. Despite what the score may dictate, last year's 62-18 Eagles win offered some of the most exciting matches for both teams with two of the four contested matches going down to the wire. Ben Denamur and Nick West have been two of top wrestlers for Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol as of late with both getting at least three wins at least week's Manawa Invitational. For Southern Door, Griffin Slezewski and Grant Englebert each took 2nd place in their weight classes at the Rocket Scramble hosted by Cedar Grove-Belgium, but Shaun Tooley also had an impressive 4-1 record at 145 pounds.

Tim Kowols and Greg Letter will have the call on 104.1 WRLU beginning at 6:30 p.m. with the prematch show and the first whistle at 7 p.m. The match will also stream worldwide at DoorKewauneeHighSchoolSports.com. Other wrestling action Thursday includes a rematch of last year's Division 2 sectional championship when Luxemburg-Casco visits Freedom at 6:30 p.m. and Kewaunee travels to Peshtigo for a 7 p.m. first whistle.

Eagles soar past Little Chute

In the only local boys' basketball action on Saturday, Southern Door flew past Little Chute Saturday night 66-43.

Ryan Claflin scored 26 points and Alex Daoust added another 15 as they staked the Eagles to a 16 point halftime lead against the visiting Mustangs. That was thanks partly to Claflin's ability to hit the three-point shot, who hit as many (3) as the rest of the Mustangs. Kade Van Asten paced the Mustangs with 16 points in the defeat.

Southern Door girls falter in second half

The Southern Door High School girls basketball team looked poised for a nonconference upset on Friday night. They led the Sheboygan Falls Falcons 21-16, but the visitors shook off the holiday hangover in a big way in the second half. The Eagles managed only eight points to Sheboygan Falls’ 35 in the last frame. When the dust settled the final score was 51-29. Both varsity teams at Sheboygan Falls are on long winning streaks and both have defeated Southern Door in the past week. The Eagles girls team returns to the court Monday against Sturgeon Bay.
