Daoust's 45 points not enough for Preble Tourney title

The Southern Door Eagles' boys basketball team tried to get back into their title game matchup at Preble High School, but they ultimately fell short in an 87-82 loss to Mosinee on Friday.

With Indians leading 39-32 at the break thanks to each team's role players, the stars came to shine in the second half. Drew Daoust scored 28 of his game-high 45 points to pace the Eagles. He was countered by the Indians' Keagan Jirschele, who tallied 36 points on the evening, 28 of which came after the break. Landen Thamer proved to be a good sidekick for Jirschele, scoring 21 points and keeping possessions alive with timely rebounds. Lauden Berg (13 points) and Matthew Malvitz (10 pts) added 23 points combined in the loss.

Southern Door's Veeser and LeFevre make history

For the first time in 41 years, the LaCrosse Center saw all-girls divisions get crowned at the Bi-State Classic.

Among those getting crowned were Southern Door's Hailey Veeser and Nora LeFevre and Luxemburg-Casco's Kiley Georgel. Veeser was the highest-finishing wrestler from the area, losing in the championship match to Pulaski's Harlow Skenandore. LeFevre was guaranteed at least a sixth-place finish at the time of this writing.

On the other side of the state, Eagles wrestlers found themselves in 54th place overall at the On The Water Wrestling Tournament. Hayden Jeanquart and Trevor Englebert were still alive in the tournament as of this writing.

Big first-half springs Eagles boys vs. Purgolders

A 20-point lead heading into the second half all but guaranteed the Southern Door boys' basketball team's fate in the Preble Holiday Tournament, beating Milwaukee Washington 71-49.

That gap was courtesy of Drew Daoust, who scored 20 of his game-high 32 points in the opening frame to give the Eagles a 41-21 lead at halftime. Rudolph Baker gave the Eagles' defense all they could handle in the second half, registering 22 of his team-high 31 points. Each team had one other player reach double digits to complement their high scorer, with Caden Pierre scoring 11 points for the Eagles and Qashawn Huffman adding 11 points for the Purgolders.

The Eagles will now play Mosinee in the championship game after they beat the host Green Bay Preble Hornets 84-63. The Indians have three players averaging double digits, led by Keagen Jirschele's 21.3 ppg. Landen Thomer is averaging a double-double with 16.9 ppg and 15.5 rpg.

Counard prepares for life after high school

Outside of practices, games, and school, you may have run into Southern Door senior Sophia Counard, who is helping connect residents and visitors to festive fun in Sturgeon Bay.

Counard's Youth Apprenticeship this semester is with Destination Sturgeon Bay, where she has been able to explore her interest in marketing and to see if it was something she liked. She was a critical part of the organization's Moo-La-La contest, which gave out prizes throughout the holiday shopping season, including a $1,000 last week. Counard says she has been able to take a lot away from the experience.

Counard plays volleyball, basketball, and softball at Southern Door as she enters her final year of competing in high school sports. She says her favorite sport is softball, where she has been an All-Packerland Conference outfielder for the last three years, including a unanimous selection in 2023. She says there have been a lot of memories made over the last four years, including an ominous start to her high school career because of the season shuffle caused by the pandemic.

Counard's Eagles will play Gibraltar on Thursday night in Brussels before taking the holidays off from game action until January 5th.

Eagles soar over Wolves on U102.1

The Southern Door Eagles were able to fend off the feisty Algoma Wolves 73-63 behind Drew Daoust’s record-breaking 29 points on Tuesday night on U-102.1.

It was well documented that Daoust was just north of 20 points away from breaking the Southern Door and Door County scoring record entering the matchup against Algoma. Daoust started the game off for the Eagles, scoring the team’s first 7 points. The Wolves, however, would not make it easy for the Junior guard, as they matched point for point early with Southern Door.

Daoust got help from Caden Pierre from outside the arc, draining three of his four made threes in the first half. The Wolves were led by Chase Romdenne in the first half, scoring 11 of his 17 points in the first half.

Daoust missed a deep three as the buzzer sounded to keep him short of the county record after the first half, as he entered the locker room with 20 points and a 43-29 lead for the Eagles.

It did not take long for Daoust to break the record however, as a fast break layup in traffic gave Daoust 1,567 points in his career, officially snapping the long-held record of Nathan Vogel (1,566).

Algoma did not let Daoust bask in all the glory, however, as they mounted a run of their own, cutting the lead into single digits, but the closest they got was 8, and Drew Daoust closed the game out with 29 points and a 73-63 Southern Door victory.

Algoma was led by Chase Romdenne, who scored 17 points, while Parker Lischka added 13 more for the Wolves.

When asked about breaking the record after the game, Daoust talked about relying on his team and the Eagles coaching staff throughout the game and the season to get him where he is at now. What’s next for Daoust? A run at 2,000 points and another Conference Championship, the 8th championship in 9 seasons.

Eagles coach highlights busy weekend of wrestling

GIRLS RECAP

Following up from a very busy week of girls wrestling.  Starting with Tuesday night, where our girls combined with Wrightstown to Dual against Chilton/Hilbert, who combined with Elkhart Lake and Freedom.  Due to the combined teams, it does not count as a dual, but the format was fun for the teams and gave the girls a chance to experience the team format.  Our girls wrestled very hard, and each showed improvement.  Exciting first wins for Kaitlyn and Delaney on varsity.

Friday night was our first Southern Door Girls Scramble, where we hosted ten other teams.  I am very proud of our girls as they took first as a team.  With only one champion, it was a true team win as each girl earned wins and team points.  The enthusiasm and experience from Tuesday carried over.

The top finisher was Nora LeFevre, taking first.  Nora had some opportunities to work technique but dominated every match.  Delaney Wilke, Sydney Turner, Hailey Veeser, and Kailyn Neville all finished in second place.  Delaney followed up her first win on Tuesday with three more on Friday.  Getting more comfortable with the adrenaline.  Sydney lost a tough match.  Winning 2-1 heading into the third, she couldn't get off the bottom and gave up some near-fall points.  She'll learn from it and not make that mistake again.  Hailey got out of her normal style and went toe to toe with Tiani LeMieux, who is more experienced in Free Style and Greco, and it showed.  After some back and forth where it was anyones match Hailey got caught and pinned.  Next time, we'll look to slow the match down and wrestle our style.  Kailyn was surprised at the strength and speed of Georgel from LC.  Her inexperience was the difference.  Ashley Larson and Attyson Wilson earned two wins and placed third and fourth consecutively.

Next up for the team is an individual tournament at Wrightstown Friday night.

BOYS RECAP

Our SD Boys Wrestled at the Willard Schmidt Scramble at Green Bay Preble on Saturday.  Very good weekend for the boys.  The team did very well, placing third out of 16 teams despite some open weight classes.  Everyone came to wrestle and contributed.  Without any individual champions, it was true teamwork to finish where we did as a team.

Individually, our top finishers were Ethan Alexander(126) and Mason Motquin(132), who finished second.  This was Ethan's first time placing on Varsity, and he looked good.  Ethan gave up a takedown scramble near fall in the first period.  With a choice in the second, Hanke from Lomira chose bottom.  Ethan rode him out but couldn't get any near falls.  In the third, we chose bottom and earned a reversal but couldn't get a turn.  Mason had a rematch from last week with Steffens from Seymour. After a 2-1 loss last week, we knew it would be tough.  After losing the takedown, Mason quickly scored a reversal to tie the score at 2-2.  In the second period, we chose bottom, and after a few scrambles, Steffens caught us in a cradle we couldn't break.

Finishing third and making the podium were Trevor Englebert(144), Lance Veeser (150), Hayden Jeanquart (175) and Thomas Jackson (190).  Lukas Kallin and Spencer Slezewski finished fourth, and Trevin Veeser fifth.

Next up for the boys will be Oshkosh on the Water between the holidays.  We'll try to heal a few dings and bruises and get ready.

Southern Door, Algoma tangle on U-102.1

Southern Door will face a feisty Algoma squad on Tuesday as they look to keep their spot on top of the Packerland Conference boys' basketball standings.

Behind a 40-point performance by Drew Daoust, the Eagles cruised to a 62-54 victory Thursday night over county rival Sturgeon Bay. Daoust was a big reason the Eagles jumped out to a 13-point halftime lead, scoring 25 of his game-high 40 points in the first half. He kept the game at a distance with seven made free throws in the second half. Tyler Neinas hit two threes to give him six points on the night, while Lauden Berg and Will Jandrin added four points apiece in the win for the Eagles.

In their last game, the Wolves led from start to finish to defeat the Sevastopol Pioneers 54-40 at Fulwiler Fieldhouse. The Wolves used a stifling defensive full-court press to force numerous turnovers early on to build a 12-0 lead and kept the Pioneers scoreless for over six minutes. Parker Lischka led the way for the Wolves, scoring 24 points, while Cody Kirchman added 12 points.

Bryan Mazur and Reece Robillard will have the call on U-102.1 and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com beginning at 7:15 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the tip-off at 7:30 p.m.

Southern Door, Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol wrestlers head to Preble tournament

After letting the girls shine on Friday, it's the boys' turn on Saturday when the Southern Door wrestling team heads to Green Bay Preble for an invitational.

Kaukauna, Neenah, Seymour, Chilton, Freedom, Lomira, Mishicot, Ozaukee, Sheboygan South, Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol, Waupaca, Wittenberg-Birnamwood, Crivitz, and Menomonee Indian are all scheduled to be there when the action starts at 9:30 a.m.

In their last tournament action, the Eagles finished in the top 25 of the 32-team Battle on the Bay Tournament hosted by Bay Port. Trevor Englebert (145 pounds) led the way with a fourth-place finish for the Eagles, while Hayden Jeanquart and Lance Veeser also placed in the top eight in their respective brackets. Head coach Jerry Englebert knows his team is young, but he likes how they are progressing early.

In their own action last week, the Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol wrestling team finished in the middle of the pack as a team but at or near the top of the podium in several weight classes during Saturday's Brillion Invitational. Spencer Madsen led the way for SBS with a first-place finish at 144 pounds, while Seth  Laughlin (285 lbs) and Zak Wrobel (175 pounds) came in second.

Daoust, Eagles soar past Clippers boys

Behind a 40-point performance by Drew Daoust, the Southern Door boys' basketball team cruised to a 62-54 victory Thursday night over county rival.

Daoust was a big reason why the Eagles jumped out to a 13-point halftime lead, scoring 25 of his game-high 40 points in the first half. Jackson Starr and Calvin Richard did what they could to keep the game from getting out of hand, with nine points each in the opening frame. The Clippers closed the gap a little bit in the second half by controlling the other players on the court for the Eagles and Garrett Ulberg's 11 points after the break. Ulberg's 11 points were good for third-highest on the team behind 15 points from Richard and Starr.

Daoust kept the game at a distance with seven made free throws in the second half. Tyler Neinas hit two threes to give him six points on the night, while Lauden Berg and Will Jandrin added four points apiece in the win for the Eagles.

Southern Door tournament testament to girls' wrestling growth

Southern Door High School is showcasing one of the fastest-growing sports in the country on Friday when it hosts its first girls' wrestling tournament.

According to the National Federation of State High School Associations, girls' wrestling saw a massive 55-percent increase from 2021-22 – to reach a record total of 49,127. Ten years ago, fewer than 10,000 girls were in high school wrestling. Wisconsin last year became one of 36 states in the country to have a separate state tournament. Among the qualifiers for the history-making event were Southern Door's Nora LeFevre and Hailey Veeser. Along with Sydney Turner, head coach Jerry Englebert credits them with helping the sport grow to a point where they could participate in an all-girls dual meet earlier this week. Englebert says he has long advocated for girls' wrestling and believes the all-girls option allows the sport to flourish even more.

Amherst, Appleton West, Crandon, Luxemburg-Casco, Bay Port, Brillion, Chilton, Florence, Mishicot, Oregon, Oshkosh West, Peshtigo, Plymouth, Stratford, Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol, Tomahawk, Two Rivers, Wrightstown, and Wausau West are among the schools scheduled to attend the tournament, which will be set up as a four-wrestler round-robin. Weigh-ins are at 4 p.m., with the first matches starting at 5 p.m.

Southern Door, Sturgeon Bay meet for girl's basketball matchup

The Southern Door girls' basketball team will welcome their neighbors to the north on Tuesday night when they play Sturgeon Bay.

The Eagles returned from Seymour without a win last Thursday night, losing to the Thunder 56-31. Payton Gilbertson led them in scoring with 13 points, more than half of which game after the break. Ashlyn Delfosse hit three from behind the arc en route to a 12-point night.

The Clippers emerged victorious last Friday night with a 31-29 win over Clintonville. Dasha Yeltysheva led the way, scoring more than half of her 15 points in the second half to pace the Clippers to victory. Regan Kasten complemented her with 11 points.

Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.

Southern Door boys visit Brillion

The Southern Door boys' basketball team will hit the road for its Tuesday night matchup to visit Brillion.

In their last game, Drew Daoust eclipsed his highest career mark and set the Southern Door single-game scoring record of 53 in a 93-49 win over Sevastopol. Daoust had 29 of the 49 Eagles points in the first half, with 5 made threes. Daoust did not slow down, piling on three more threes in the half, bringing his total to 8, and eventually gave himself a historic 53, the most points in a single game in Southern Door Basketball history. Drew passed his oldest brother, Kyle Daoust, who had held the record for the past few years. In the postgame show, Eagles head coach Josh VandenBush talked about the ability for Drew to pass his brother, and how his teammates wanted to see him break the record.

The Tigers nipped Wrightstown 63-62 in their last game, but four of their six wins this season have been by at least 20 points. Grady Geiger is nearly averaging a double-double on the year with 19 points and eight rebounds a game.

Tip-off in Brillion is set for 7 p.m.

Eagles girls wrestle their way to Hilbert

The Southern Door girls wrestling team will head to Hilbert for a multi-team dual featuring the host school, Chilton, Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah, Freedom, Two Rivers, and Wrightstown.

The girls are coming off their first tournament of the year last Friday in Brillion. Four of the Eagles' eight wrestlers placed in the tournament won by Shawano, including first-place finishes by Nora LeFevre (114 pounds) and Hailey Veeser (145 pounds). Sydney Turner (126 pounds, 5th) and Kailyn Neville (235, 3rd) also placed. Veeser was honored by her coaches with the Talon Timber, an award given to the top wrestler from the previous week.

Wrestling begins at 6 p.m.

Southern Door girls take on Seymour on the road

The Southern Door Eagles girls' basketball team will head out of town and out of conference for its Thursday night matchup against Seymour.

The Eagles lost at Roncalli earlier this week 53-45. Payton Gilbertson (12.7 ppg), Ashlynn Delfosse (12.0 ppg), and Isabella Price (10.7 ppg) are all averaging in double-figures for the Andy Bruess-led squad that has lost its last two games.

The Thunder have split their first six games and enter the matchup on a two-game losing streak. Keira VandeHei leads the team with 11.6 ppg and is second on the team in assists with 1.0 apg.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Daoust sets Eagles single game record; beats Pioneers on U-102.1

After averaging north of 30 points in his Sophomore season, Drew Daoust eclipsed his highest career mark and set the Southern Door single-game scoring record of 53 in a 93-49 win over Sevastopol on U-102.1.

Daoust had 29 of the 49 Eagles points in the first half, with 5 made threes. Caden Pierre was the Robin to Daoust’s batman, piling on another 10 points in the first half.

Frankie DeYoung tried to keep the Pioneers close intact with the Eagles with two made threes to bring the halftime score to 49-25 with the Eagles leading.

Sevastopol had a good second half from Zaul Valdivia, who gave the Pioneers five points, and Valdivia finished with 7.

The Eagles move to 2-2 overall on the season with the win over the Pioneers and 2-0 in Packerland play.

Eagles, Pioneers battle in boys' basketball Monday

The Southern Door Eagles and the Sevastopol Pioneers will exchange pleasantries for the first time on the basketball court for the first time this season when the two meet in Brussels on Tuesday.

Six three-pointers and 34 total points later, Drew Daoust ensured the Southern Door boys' basketball team earned their first Packerland win of the season with a 65-55 win over Peshtigo last Thursday. Daoust scored 18 of his game-high 34 points in the second half. Lauden Berg also reached double figures for the Eagles, scoring 13 points.

The Pioneers ended November on a sour note, losing to Mishicot 48-36 in their last outing last Thursday. They played about even with the host Indians in the second half, but a 10-point deficit at halftime proved too much for the Pioneers to handle. Zaul Valdivia was the only player to register double figures with 10 points. Logan Schuh and Chase Haberli each had seven points, while two others collected four.

Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m.

Eagles girls soar to Jets Monday

The Southern Door girls basketball team will head south to Manitowoc for its matchup against Roncalli at 7:15 p.m.

The Eagles were outmatched in their cross-county rivalry game last Friday against Sevastopol in a 50-22 loss. Southern Door was finally able to muster a point outside of the free throw line in the second half, as Ashlyn Delfosse and Isabella Price combined for 13 second-half points. Katie Spude was the second-highest scorer behind Rikkola’s 20, finishing with 11 points.

The Jets have split their first four games but are winners in their last two contests against Two Rivers and Kiel. Lauren Stangel is leading the Jets with over 21 points and 3 assists per game, while Amber Fiecko is averaging about seven points and rebounds a game, both good for second on the team.

Tip-off is scheduled for 7:15 p.m.

Eagles wrestlers swept in duals, return to action Saturday

First recap of the season.  I'll try to shake the rust like our wrestlers did last night.  The season is more of a marathon than a sprint.  We are very happy to have 18 boys and nine girls out for wrestling this season.  It will be a couple of weeks before we get all the pieces in place, but we should improve each outing.  We have some solid returning wrestlers but also a lot of new faces.

Last night, SD hosted Two Rivers and Denmark.  Kewaunee also wrestled Two River and Denmark, but we will have our Dual with them later this season.  SD wrestled Two Rivers first, then Denmark.  Results are listed below in order of the matches.

One of the night's highlights was Lance Veeser's win over Derek Klinkner of Two Rivers.  After a few losses over the years, this was Lance's first win, and to do it on the varsity stage in front of the home crowd was a nice bonus.  Also, congratulations to Ashley Larson and Breleigh Paplham, who wrestled their first matches last night.

Tomorrow, we head to Stratford for the Schoenher Duals.  Stratford, DePere, Crandon, Wausau East, and Wittenberg Birnamwood all look like solid teams, which should make for some great wrestling.

Daoust's big night helps Eagles boys soar past Bulldogs

Six three-pointers and 34 total points later, Drew Daoust made sure the Southern Door boys' basketball team earned their first Packerland win of the season with a 65-55 win over Peshtigo.

The 10-point halftime lead would hold for the Eagles, who answered the Bulldogs' attempts to get back into the game. Dominick Baxter was a big reason why the Eagles had to work so hard to hold onto that lead, as he scored 19 of his 26 points in the second half. Daoust nearly matched him in the frame, scoring 18 of his game-high 34 points in the second half. Lauden Berg also reached double figures for the Eagles, scoring 13 points.
