Eagles' Englebert takes sixth at OTW

Southern Door's Grant Englebert was the only Eagle to soar to the podium at the Lourdes Academy On The Water Classic over the weekend.

Englebert took sixth place at 160 pounds, forfeiting his final match of the weekend. He had two overtime matches to his name one that dropped him out of the championship rounds to Landon Thern of Hortonville but another that sprung him to the sixth consolation round. Englebert went 5-2 on the weekend.

FROM COACH JERRY ENGLEBERT

Friday and Saturday we competed in the 2019 Lourdes OTW Wrestling Classic at the Kolf Center in Oshkosh.  This is the largest tournament in the state and one of the toughest.  This year there were 67 teams represented.  As usual all weight classes included returning state qualifiers, some state champions and many state ranked wrestlers.

Our goal going into this tournament was to get some experience for our younger wrestlers and challenge our more experienced wrestlers.  We had hoped to have a couple more making it to the second day but overall satisfied with the effort and progress we've made this year.

Our top finisher was Grant Englebert taking sixth place at 160.  Grant finished 12th last season.  After a good start Grant lost a tough overtime match (against the eventual fourth place finisher) putting him on the consolation side of the bracket.

On day two Grant bounced back with a major decision then an overtime win against Josiah Streblow of Fond Du Lac to make the placing rounds.  Streblow is a familiar opponent.  Grant ran into Streblow twice last season at this tournament losing the first match in overtime then winning the second match.  TJ Williams who helped coach at Southern Door three years ago is now one of the coaches at Fond Du Lac.  Following this win Grant earned two nice wins over ranked wrestlers but suffered an injury that slowed him down.  After losing his fourth match we decided to forfeit his final match in hopes of not aggravating his injury any further.

Next up for SD is the Rocket Scramble next Saturday at Cedar Grove.  This is an important tournament as we should match up with a couple teams from our regional.

Sheboygan Falls too much for Eagles

The Southern Door High School boys basketball team looked to make a statement in non-conference play on Saturday, but things did not go as planned. The Eagles were dropped by Sheboygan Falls, 75-40. The loss snaps a five-game winning streak for Southern Door. It was the Falcon’s sixth consecutive victory.

Sheboygan Falls was successful at keeping Ryan Claflin in check. The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay commit was held to 13 points. Jack Peterson added 10 for the Eagles. Sheboygan Falls had a balanced attack. Jamison Nicklaus led the Falcons with 14 and four others had at least nine points.

Southern Door boys, Kewaunee girls sit atop Packerland leaders

It is early, but the Southern Door boys and Kewaunee girls are off to a good start to earning consecutive Packerland Conference basketball crowns.

On the boys side, the Eagles are a perfect 4-0 while Kewaunee is undefeated as well sitting at 3-0. Sturgeon Bay sits in third place with a 2-1 record and Gibraltar are in seventh with a 1-2 mark. Sevastopol and Algoma sit at the bottom of the conference with both teams looking for their first win of the season.

The Kewaunee girls share the top spot with Peshtigo with 3-0 records while Southern Door is close behind in third place with a 2-1 record. Sturgeon Bay is tied for fourth place with NEW Lutheran thanks to a 3-2 record while Gibraltar sits underneath them at 1-2. Algoma is one game above Sevastopol with a 1-4 record.

Bonus points huge for Southern Door wrestlers

Southern Door wrestlers are not joking around when it comes to getting wins on the mat this season. The Eagles pinned their way through Bay Port in defeat and did no worse than a couple of technical falls in its win against Gillett/Suring. At last Saturday’s Kewaunee Invitational, 18 of the team’s 21 wins came with extra points thanks to winning by 10 or more points or in 16 cases, by pins. Head coach Jerry Englebert says they have been working hard on getting the most out of their matches.

The Eagles will join Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol and Kewaunee in Oshkosh this weekend for the Lourdes Academy On the Water Invitational.

Southern Door's Englebert claims Kewaunee crown

Saturday we wrestled at the Kewaunee Invitational.  This is really a great tournament for a team like ours that has a mix of abilities and experience.  The field of teams is very similar to ours which makes for a great tournament.  Some brackets can be very tough but most have many wrestlers or similar abilities.  We also get a glimpse of some teams that will be at our regional and conference.

Over the past week we worked hard to fix some issues from our last tournament and today we saw some very good progress.  We were generally in much better position.  We were also much more offensive and using sound technique.  Always things to work on but definitely moving in the right direction.

Highlights today were Grant Englebert finishing first, Kyle Conard second and Austin Farley, Griffen Slezewski and Austin Falish all third.  Nice to see Grant wrestling again in his first tournament of the year.  Hopefully, his shoulder injury is behind him.  He wrestled with a lot of confidence today and dominated his weight class.  Kyle and Austin both looked very good and Griffin is getting back to where he was before his Leukemia.

With Christmas on Wednesday, we'll have limited time to prepare before heading to Oshkosh on the Water Friday.  Monday will be review and Thursday prep for one of the biggest tournaments in the state.

Southern Door tries for fifth in a row at home

The Southern Door High School boys basketball team didn’t have a lot of time to savor their Thursday night victory. Less than 48 hours later, they’re back on the court against New Holstein. The Huskies hail from the Eastern Wisconsin Conference and are winless on the season. They are not strangers to Packerland teams. Their last game was Tuesday night against Chilton. The Tigers won 75-67.

New Holstein does not have a player averaging more than 15 points per game. Southern Door has two with Ryan Claflin (25 ppg) and Alex Daoust (17.6 ppg). New Holstein cannot match the dynamic potential of Southern Door’s best players and will look to grind out a low scoring game in the half court to compensate.

Southern Door boys speed past Sevastopol

The Southern Door High School boys basketball team proved too much for Sevastopol Thursday night. The Eagles won it running away, 75-35. With the victory, Southern Door improves to 4-1 and they round out 2019 with two non-conference games. The first of those is Saturday against New Holstein then it is a tough road draw on the 27th at Sheboygan Falls.

Sevastopol is now 0-3 on the season with all of the losses by double digits. Their next game is in a week in Lena where they match up with Stockbridge in the first round of tournament play.

Southern Door girls keep pace with leaders in the Packerland

Southern Door High School girls basketball defeated Sevastopol Tuesday night 59-41, improving to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the Packerland Conference. Sevastopol remains winless for the season so it was important for the Eagles to keep pace with the emerging conference leaders, Kewaunee and NEW Lutheran. Kewaunee was victorious as well but against a non-conference opponent. NEW Lutheran won against Gibraltar. They are the only Packerland team with three conference wins so far.

Southern Door pins their way to split on 104.1 WRLU

The Pirates were able to build their lead thanks to some forfeits and pins by Trevor Nys (195) Connor Corrigan (220), Calvin Muraski (285), Landen Heim (106). The Eagles were able get falls of their own, collecting them from Brady Tooley (145), Grant Englebert (160), Austin Falish (126), Griffin Slezewski (132), and Kyle Counard (138). The Eagles went 7-7 in its 64-0 win over Gillett/Suring. Alec Guilette (113), Austin Falish (120), Katelyn LeCloux (145), Brady Tooley (152), and Brodie Overbeck (220) picked up pins in the win. Eagles edge Vikings

The Southern Door Eagles girls' basketball team started their week on a high note with a 48-45 victory over Denmark.

It was a tight game throughout the evening with the Eagles earning its margin of victory in the first half, outscoring the Vikings 17-14. Southern Door hosts double dual on 104.1 WRLU

Two local teams will be featured on a pair of wrestling mats in Brussels Tuesday evening as Southern Door hosts Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol, Bay Port, and Gillett/Suring on 104.1 WRLU.

All four teams are coming off tournaments over the weekend with the Eagles already facing some Pirate wrestlers at the Battle of the Bay Tournament. Griffin Slezewski was the top performer for the Eagles placing in sixth place at 132 pounds while the Pirates placed six in the top six. Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol had four wrestlers place in the top six at the eight-team Brillion Invitational, led by Ben Denamur's fourth-place finish.

Eagles head coach Jerry Englebert says he has liked how his young team has responded so far this season while facing some tough competition.

Tim Kowols and Greg Letter will have the call beginning at 5:30 p.m. with the prematch show followed by Southern Door vs. Bay Port at 6 p.m. with Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol battling Gillett/Suring. Following a brief intermission, the Eagles will wrestle Gillett/Suring while Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol battles Bay Port.

FULL COACH INTERVIEW WITH SOUTHERN DOOR'S JERRY ENGLEBERT

Southern Door girls basketball host Denmark

The Southern Door girls basketball team hopes the avenge the boys' team's loss earlier this season when it hosts Denmark Monday night.

The Denmark boys team dealt the Eagles their season's lone blemish in the first game of the year 65-62.  The Eagles girls just hope to continue their hot shooting from their last game over a week ago when the snapped a two game losing streak with a 75-30 breakout performance against Oconto. The Vikings are looking to snap their own two-game losing streak, including a 50-41 loss to Oconto Falls on Friday. Chloe LaCrosse is nearly averaging a double double with 11.7 points per game and 8,8 rebounds per game. Nicole Norton and Hailey Shimon are also boasting scoring averages in the double figures.

Tip time is 7:30 p.m.

Slezewski leads the way at Battle

Griffin Slezewski got his first podium finish of the season with a sixth place finish at the Battle of the Bay Tournament hosted by Bay Port. Wrestling at 132 pounds, Slezewski lost twice on the day but earned two forfeits and a decision to led him to the fifth-place match.

From Coach Jerry Englebert:

Southern Door wrestling competed at Bayport on Saturday.  It was their annual "Battle on the Bay" tournament and it was indeed a battle.  This tournament has a reputation as one of the toughest in the state and this year was no exception.  Our inexperience was exposed but I feel we went into the tournament with the right attitude.  We wanted our less experienced wrestlers to get a chance to wrestle the best and our more experienced wrestlers a chance to see where they stand.

Congrats to Griffin Slezewski who finished 6th on his journey back and Brodie Overbeck who placed 13th in only his second year.

This week we have our Alumni Night Tuesday and the Kewaunee Invitational this weekend.

Southern Door boys show defensive mettle

The Southern Door High School boys basketball team proved they could win a different kind of basketball game Friday against Peshtigo. The Eagles locked down on the defensive end and executed in their half-court offense to win a low-scoring 60-45 contest. It is the lowest point total given up this year by Southern Door, and a full 15 points below the average allowed through three games.

The Eagles were led by Ryan Claflin’s 27 with no other player scoring in double digits. Southern Door and Kewaunee are the only teams in the Packerland left with an unblemished conference record at 3-0. Southern Door’s next game is against Sevastopol High School.

Southern Door boys win Tuesday night

The Southern Door High School boys basketball team soared Tuesday night against previously undefeated Oconto. The Eagles gave the Blue Devils their first loss of the season, 77-64. Ryan Claflin had 27 points, Nick Baudhuin netted 15 and Alex Daoust chipped in 14. Southern Door improved to 2-1 on the season while remaining unbeaten in Packerland Conference play. So far, Southern Door is winning their conference games by an average of 20 points.

The Eagles are back on the court Friday when they travel to Peshtigo.  The Bulldogs are 1-1 without a conference game so far in 2019-20. They defeated Marinette by 27 before losing by two in a tight road game against Northland Pines. Peshtigo is averaging 76 points per game while Southern Door has yet to give up 70 points in a contest so far.

Southern Door wrestling wins pair at Stratford

The Southern Door Wrestling 2019-2020 season has begun.  This years' teams consists of Freshman Alec Guilette, Jonas Jandrin, Cody Nellis, Jacob Zettle, Christian Counard, Reese Vanryzin and Ethan Rouer.  Sophomores Austin Farley, Dylan Wessel, Thomas Grosbeier, Shaun Tooley, Josh Ditello, Riley Phillips and Brodie Overbeck.  Juniors Austin Falish, Griffin Slezewski, Kyle Conard, Katelyn LeCloux, Brad Skippon, Brady Tooley, Drew DeFere and Grant Englebert.  Our only returning senior is Blake Jensen, who wrestled part of last season, and is joined by first year senior Ben Slezewski and exchange student Corentin Valette.

We are a young team again this year but with some valuable experience.  We have two returning state place winners with Grant Englebert (5th last year) and Griffin Slezewski 6th in 2018.  We also have two returning sectional qualifiers in Austin Falish and Kyle Conard.  Because we have been young the past couple years our Juniors and Sophomores have a lot of varsity time.  I expect the freshman are also going to make an impact this season.

Saturday we wrestled at the Schoenherr Duals in Stratford.  For several wrestlers this was their first high school competition and for some the first time ever wrestling.  No better way to let you know just how you stand than by wrestling a perennial power like Stratford (State runner up last year).  Like most seasons our new comers, and the team as a whole, will take some losses early in the season as we gain experience.  That said, I feel all of our returning wrestlers showed improvement from last season which was good to see.  We ended the day 2-3 as a team.  Not bad considering we were missing 10 wrestlers for various reasons.  We also moved wrestlers in an out of the line up to get as many close matches as possible.  As coaches we were able to see some of the techniques we've been working on pay off and some areas we need to re-emphasize.  We were also able to see the heart and determination this group has.

SD dual scores were as follows:
SD 36 Watoma Wild Rose 24
SD 28 Barron 51
SD 42 Crandon 30
SD 6 Stratford 58
SD 36 Phillips 39

Top individual finishers were Kyle Conard and Brodie Overbeck both placing second.

Team results were as follows:
Stratford 5-0
Phillips 4-1
Barron 3-2
SD 2-3
Wautoma Wild Rose 1-4
Crandon 0-5

Next Saturday the Varsity heads to Bayport for the "Battle on the Bay" and JV head to Luxemburg.  Bayport is another measuring stick as it is one of the toughest tournaments in the state.  Luxemburg is a tough JV tournament that can provide the mat time needed to develop skills.  Already looking forward to both tournaments.

Eagles blow past Blazers in conference opener

A big second half for the Southern Door offense led the Eagles past NEW Lutheran 77-50 in its Packerland Conference opener Thursday.

A slim three-point lead at the break, the Eagles' offense exploded in the second frame, outgunning the Blazers 48-24. Ryan Claflin scored a game-high 21 points while Alex Daoust and Nick Baudhuin each scored 15 in the win. The defense was just as impressive, allowing only Elijah Lange to reach double-digits in scoring, who scored 10 points for the Blazers.

The Eagles return to their home gym Tuesday to face undefeated Oconto.

Southern Door girls, boys in action Tuesday

The Southern Door High School girls basketball team could not find lift off in Tuesday night's extra frame against NEW Lutheran at home. The Eagles allowed the road squad to win its first contest of the season in overtime, 64-55. The girls are back on the court Saturday evening at Oconto. The Blue Devils picked up a win in their first Packerland game Tuesday, beating Sevastopol.

With the girls team home, the boys had to travel to Denmark to matchup with the Vikings. It was Southern Door's first game of the year while Denmark already had a win to its name and that could have proven the difference in a close contest late. Denmark knocked off Southern Door, 65-62. Overall, very similar games for both the boys and girls squads. The Southern Door boys travels to NEW Lutheran Thursday night.

Little Chute gallops past Southern Door girls

The Little Chute High School girls basketball team used a big second half to pull away from Southern Door en route to a 58-42 victory Saturday. The Mustangs raced to 32 points in the second half against Southern Door's 17 after leading by a lone point at the break.

Little Chute did not shoot as well from the field as one might think given the score, about 37 percent. The lone exception was Katie Joten who had 25 points while going 9-18 from the field with five three-pointers.

Southern Door's next game is Tuesday night. The Eagles host NEW Lutheran at 7:30 PM.
