Eagles host Oconto on Saturday

The undefeated Southern Door Eagles look to stay undefeated in the Packerland Conference as they play host to the Oconto Blue Devils Saturday night.  The Eagles had a 70-64 overtime win over Sturgeon Bay on Thursday and beat the Kewaunee Storm on the road 62-48 Friday night.  Alex Daoust scored 35 points to carry the Eagles to the win over the Clippers.  The Southern Door-Oconto game is scheduled to start at 7:30 pm in Eagle Gym at Southern Door High School.

Southern Door wrestlers see opportunity at regionals

Coming off their first conference championship in three seasons, the Southern Door wrestling team is seeing the possibilities in their regional tournament this weekend.

The Eagles will see Kewaunee again this weekend in Mishicot while also facing the host school, Reedsville, Oneida Nation, and Valders. The team enters the tournament with three of its seniors Grant Englebert, Griffin Slezewski, and Kyle Counard ranked in the state. Coach Jerry Englebert believes there are no runaway favorites in the regional and that difference between a team sectional berth and staying at home could be just a couple of points.

Wrestling begins at 10 a.m.

Eagles boys ready for Kewaunee showdown

The Southern Door Eagles can put some much-needed distance between them and the Kewaunee Storm Friday night when the two teams play each other in Brussels.

Alex Daoust scored over 30 points in Thursday's game against the Clippers to help lead the Eagles back from a 14 point deficit to a 70-64 overtime victory. They enter the match-up a perfect 11-0 in the Packerland. Some of that could be because they have not yet face the conference's second-toughest foe in the Storm, which beat the Clippers earlier this week 67-44. Alex Rohr is averaging 17 points a game and Ben Heim is right behind him with 16 points. The loser of the game will have a quick chance to avenge their defeat as the two teams play each other again on Monday in Kewaunee.

Tip is set for 7:30 p.m.

Eagles fly by Blazers

The undefeated Southern Door Eagles kept up their winning ways Tuesday night with a convincing 64-48 victory over the NEW Lutheran Blazers in Green Bay.  The Eagles jumped out to a 36-19 halftime lead and never looked back.  The Eagles were paced by Alex Daoust’s 26 points and Logan Jeanquart chipped in 12 more as the Eagles were never really challenged after taking the 17 point lead at the half.  Elijah Lange led the Blazers with 17 points.

The Eagles will now host Sturgeon Bay Thursday night in a game that will be broadcast on 103.3 FM the Clipper and New Radio Sports Network.

Eagles girls topple Oconto

The Southern Door Eagles' girls basketball team came back from a two-point deficit to beat the Oconto Blue Devils 58-51.

Nicole Norton led the way with 23 points in the win while Hailey Shimon pitched in another 12 points. Lianna Baxter countered the Eagles for the Blue Devils by scoring 20 points in the game. Hannah Moe chipped in another 12 points in the loss.

The Eagles are back in action Tuesday night when they travel to Peshtigo. The Bulldogs are coming off a slim 48-46 win over Sevastopol on Monday. The tip is set for 7:30 p.m.

Eagles girls battle Oconto Monday

The Southern Door Eagles' girls basketball team heads to Oconto to continue their recent winning streak.

After losing two straight the Storm, the Eagles have won three in a row including Saturday's 67-41 win over Crivitz. They have scored at least 60 points and have allowed less than 45 points in all three games despite being held on consecutive nights. Nicole Norton continues her stranglehold on the conference lead in scoring, averaging 25.8 points per game.

The Blue Devils narrowly prevented a three-game losing streak when it hit a pair of free throws in last Thursday's win over Sevastopol. Lianna Baxter leads the Blue Devils in all statistical categories, averaging a double-double with 19 points and 10 rebounds a game.

Tip is set for 7:30 p.m.

Eagles girls wear out Wolverines

The Southern Door Eagles outscored the Crivitz Wolverines 36-19 in the second half to win 57-41.

Nicole Norton paced the Eagles in the first half with 15 of her game-high 24 points. Allianna Dufek added 12 points for the Eagles as they stayed out foul trouble all afternoon long. They committed only seven compared to 14 for the Wolverines. Tayah Werner scored 11 points and three others scored at least seven points in the loss.

Eagles boys topple Sevastopol

The Southern Door Eagles boys' basketball team doubled Sevastopol up in the second half to win 64-42.

The Eagles outscored the Pioneers 32-15 to put cruise to another conference victory. Part of that was the Eagles' ability to get to the line, going 16-20 from the charity stripe compared to 4-5 for the Pioneers.

Alex Daoust scored 26 points and Devin Schinktgen added another 11 points in the win for the Eagles. Logan Beyer led the Pioneers with 11 points while Jack DeYoung chipped in 10 of his own.

Eagles wrestlers clinch conference crown

An exciting day for Southern Door wrestlers and wrestling fans.  Our wrestlers won the conference title in a hard-fought match over Kewaunee.  Despite missing Brodie Overbeck (285) due to Covid and Alex Buhr (126) due to injury they were able to overcome the forfeits.   As is always the case in conference duals, there were a number of weigh-in and lineup changes as both teams tried to get the best matchups.

Kewaunee won the coin flip prior to the dual and choose to step on first in the even-numbered individual matches.  In the first match at 145 SD sent out Alec Guilette and Kewaunee sent out Jack Severen even though both wrestlers weighed in at 138.  WIAA rules allow wrestlers to wrestle at the lowest weight class they qualified for or one weight class up.  At 152 Kewaunee choose to forfeit allowing Thomas Grosbeier to step in and Hayden Jeanquart to move up to 160 where he and Logan Steinhorst had weighed in.  Grant Englebert who normally weighs in at 160 bumped up to weigh in at 170 where he picked up a big pin over Mitchell Thompson who is ranked at 170 for Kewaunee.  At 182 Drew DeFere started out giving up the takedown but after Kewaunee choose bottom in the second period Drew was able to work an armbar and earn a pin.  Brad Skippon weighed in at 182 but bumped up to wrestle at 195.  Brad fought hard but couldn't keep pace.  Next up was Riley Phillips who weighed in at 195 but bumped up to cover 220.  Riley lost the fist takedown and was behind 3-0 heading into the third period.  Riley chose bottom looking to get an escape and a takedown to tie the score.  Instead, he hit his favorite move to get a reversal and pin.  285 and 106 teams traded forfeits.  At 113 Kewaunee had Matt Wery and Spencer Slezewski bumped up from 106 for SD.  Unfortunately, Spencer got into a position that could have gone either way and came up on the short end.  At 120 Trevor Englebert stepped on first and Keawuanee put out Gina Augustian.  Trevor wrestled a very solid match getting the pin right at the end of the first period.  126 was a forfeit to Van Goethem.  At 132 Austin Falish worked hard and really had Max Severen off his game but ran out of steam in the last minute..  Kewaunee chose not to bump up at both 126 and 138 which left Griffin Slezewski to earn a forfeit in the final match and seal the win.

Hayden Jeanquart provided a spark by not giving up the pin at 160 even though he lost.  Then, after Grant's pin, both Drew DeFere and Riley Phillips getting come from behind pins were huge momentum swings.  Truly a great team victory from the guys who filled in and bumped around to the practice partners to the wrestlers who competed.

Eagles sink Clippers, sail to Crivitz

The Southern Door Eagles could make it three wins in three days when they play the Crivitz Wolverines on Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles soared to a second straight win as they defeated Sturgeon Bay on the road 67-34 on Friday night. They will face a Wolverines team that is an even 7-7 on the season after losing their last two teams. The Wolverines have failed to score at least 40 points in seven of their games and have cracked 50 points only three times.

Tip is set for 3:15 p.m.

The Eagles will next play Friday night at Sturgeon Bay.

Daoust scores 29 as Eagles top Vikings

The Southern Door Eagles were able to hang on to a Boys Packerland Conference victory over the Gibraltar Vikings Tuesday evening in Brussels.  Leading by six at halftime, the Eagles were able to prevail despite only going 16 for 32 from the free-throw line.  Alex Daoust had a monster game for the Eagles with 29 points while Nate Everard and Nick Baudhuin scored in double figures as well with 14 and 10 points respectively.  Gibraltar was led by Luke Steebs who poured in 26 points in the loss.

Eagles wrestlers stay perfect in conference

We started with our conference dual against Peshtigo.  Peshtigo is short numbers this year but have several freshman which will hopefully lead to a strong team in a few years.  Brodie got us off to a good start and Spencer followed up with a nice win as well.  Unfortunately Alex Buhr injured his shoulder and Riley Phillips is still in concussion protocol from last week.  We hope to have them both back next week.

Our second match was against perennial power LC.  Spencer and Mason started out with tough hard fought matches but couldn't get their offense started.  From there we took some hard losses before Grant Englebert was able to get a third period pin for our only win in the dual.  Nice win for him over a ranked opponent (#8 Division 2)

Our last match was against Oconto Falls.  Starting out down 24-0 we couldn't recover despite some nice bounce back wins.  Looking over the matches this is one match I wish we could wrestle again.  We're a better team than we showed.

Next up on the schedule is a quad at Denmark with Brillion and Kewaunee however the WIAA just announced they area allowing up to 6 teams this coming weekend and 8 teams for regionals the following weekend so we'll see what happens.

Eagles boys host Gibraltar

The Southern Door boys' basketball team will try to figure out how to cool off a hot-scoring Gibraltar when the two teams meet in Brussels on Tuesday night.

The Eagles are coming off a 67-48 win over Algoma last Friday night. They had three players score at least 12 points, including 17 from Devin Schinktgen. The win continued a streak of seven in a row in the Packerland Conference while carrying a game advantage over Kewaunee in the standings.

The Vikings had two players score over 30 points in their 94-69 win over Sevastopol last Friday night. Playing without the conference's leading scorer, Spencer Krause knocked down eight three-pointers in the game to finish with 34 points while Luke Steebs scored 32 points. It snapped a three-game losing streak for the Vikings.

Eagles boys tame Wolves

Southern Door stayed perfect in the Packerland Conference with its 67-48 victory over Algoma.

The two teams were impressive behind the arc with the Wolves knocking down eight three's and the Eagles knocked down 12 of their own. The Eagles also did a good job limiting their fouls, collecting only nine all night long and limiting the Wolves to just one free throw.

Devin Schinktgen led the way for the Eagles with 17 points while Alex Daoust (15 pts) and Nic Pierre (12) each reached double figures. Carter Zimmerman paced the Wolves with 14 points in the defeat.

The Southern Door Eagles boys' basketball team look to continue their roll when they play at home against the Algoma Wolves.

The Eagles beat the Wolves already this season to the tune of 70-47. In that game, three Eagles players reached double figures, led by Alex Daoust's 21 points. Eagles girls look to continue soaring versus Pioneers

The Southern Door Eagles girls' basketball team hope for a little less drama while keeping their perfect Packerland season alive when it hosts the Sevastopol Pioneers on Thursday.

The Eagles had one of their biggest threats to that mark on Tuesday when they narrowly defeated Gibraltar 68-67. Behind 23 points from their leading scorer Nicole Norton, the Eagles erased an eight-point half-time deficit to earn the victory. Norton leads the entire Packerland Conference in scoring with 26 points per game.

The Pioneers are 4-0 against teams not named Kewaunee in the Packerland Conference. They piled up wins against Sturgeon Bay (twice), Gibraltar, and Peshtigo during the streak, only to be bookended by a pair of losses to conference-leading Kewaunee. Zoe Kuehn has helped key the run by averaging over 16 points and eight rebounds a game.

Eagles wrestlers head to Quad in the 'Burg

The Southern Door Eagles wrestling team will not have to travel far for its quadrangular meet Thursday.

The Eagles will visit Luxemburg-Casco where they will first wrestle conference foe Peshtigo at 4:30 p.m. before taking on the host Spartans at 6 p.m. They will close the evening out at 7:30 p.m. with a dual against Oconto Falls. The Eagles are coming off a perfect 3-0 night at Bonduel, winning those duals 75-6 over Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol, 45-36 against Bonduel, and 57-22 against Amherst. Southern Door also has four ranked wrestlers with Griffin Slezewski and Kyle Conard at 145 pounds, Grant Englebert at 160 pounds, and Brodie Overbeck at 285 pounds.

Peshtigo has no ranked wrestlers and lost all three of its duals last week, including a 42-30 decision to Kewaunee.

The Spartans won its last dual against Freedom 44-20 thanks to a key eight weight class stretch that saw the Spartans get pins from Travis LeGrave, Jake Jandrin, and Tyler Derenne. The Spartans are currently ranked third in the state in Division 2 with eight wrestlers in the top eight.

Oconto Falls has four ranked wrestlers in Graeson Pankratz at 113 pounds, Luke Trepanier at 132, Aidan Stary at 170 pounds, and top-ranked Clayton Whiting at 182 pounds.

Southern Door girls dominates Gibraltar

Gibraltar could not hang on to a halftime lead Tuesday night, as the Southern Door girls nipped the Vikings 68-67.  The Eagles were led by Nicole Norton who scored 23 points, while Natalie Jandrin chipped in 16.  Karlee Kita had a game-high 27 points for the Vikings and Maggie Moroney added 16.

Southern Door keeps Packerland slate clean with win

Five players reached double figures in Southern Door's 79-69 win over Gibraltar on Monday night to stay perfect in Packerland play.

Keying the offensive output for the Eagles was being able to get to the basket and shooting the three well. Nick Baudhuin and Nate Everard drained three of the Eagles' nine three-pointers and the team was able to shoot 29 free throws, making 19 of them. In comparison, Gibraltar's Sam Lindenberg hit three of his team's threes and the Vikings only took seven shots from the charity stripe, making four.  The top four scorers were clustered together with Everard and Alex Daoust leading the way with 16 points apiece while Baudhuin and Devin Schinktgen both scored 15 points.

The Vikings kept things competitive despite the lack of free throws. Lindenberg led the Vikings with 17 points while Luke Steebs and Will Friedenfels scored 15 and 10 respectively.

Southern Door boys looks to stay perfect against Gibraltar

The Southern Door boys' basketball team hopes to keep their perfect Packerland mark intact when theyplay the Gibraltar Vikings Monday night in Fish Creek.

This marks the first game the Eagles will have played in 2021 after having non-conference games against Brillion and Crivitz postponed. Alex Daoust scored 21 points to lead two other Eagles players in double figures as they beat Algoma 70-47 on December 22nd. Daoust in the top five in the Packerland Conference in scoring (16.1 ppg) and assists (5.4 apg) while Devin Schinktgen is top three in rebound (9.7 rpg).

The Eagles will have to figure out a way to stop Sam Lindenberg, who currently leads the Packerland in scoring at over 20 points a game. The Vikings have cooled off as a team as of late after losing to Peshtigo and Oconto in consecutive games. They last lost to Peshtigo 60-59.

Eagles wrestling stays perfect

Finally back to wrestling last night.  After a long break, we were finally able to get back on the mat last night.  With the recent WIAA change allowing quad duals, we were able to wrestle Sturgeon Bay, Bonduel, and Amherst at Bonduel.  Our first dual was against Sturgeon Bay and was our conference dual originally scheduled to be hosted by Sturgeon Bay.

Overall as a team, we wrestled very well.  We came out strong and kept the momentum right to the end.

Our first contested match of the evening saw Grant Englebert pick up his 100th varsity win.  Sitting at 97 wins at the end of last season we would have thought the milestone would be quickly surpassed this season but with the pandemic, we were just happy to get matches.  Congratulations to Grant.

Eagles wrestling to battle Bonduel, Amherst, Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol

There will be plenty of matches between ranked wrestlers Thursday night when Southern Door travels to Bonduel for a quadrangular meet.

The Eagles are coming off a pair of dual meet victories against undermanned Oconto and Bay Port teams before having to quarantine for two weeks due to COVID-19 protocols. Head coach Jerry Englebert says his biggest worry is his team's conditioning after not being able to get quality work in on the mat.

The Eagles feature eighth-ranked Griffin Slezewski at 145 and fifth-ranked Grant Englebert at 160 pounds. Kyle Conard (145) and Brodie Overbeck (285) are listed as honorable mentions.

The first dual will be a conference match-up against Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol, which lost to Kewaunee 42-30 earlier this season. Hidden in that score is the fact the Clippineers captured three of the contest matches that night thanks to pins by Nick West, Ben DeNamur, and Drew Barganz.

Amherst also has a pair of ranked wrestlers in 11th ranked Taylor Armatoski at 113 pounds and fourth-ranked Mason Haas at 170 pounds. They are also coming off a season where they won their regional before falling to Coleman in the team sectional semis.

Bonduel boasts four ranked wrestlers and one honorable mention. Luis Lagunes is an honorable mention at 132 pounds. Jayson Toellner is ranked eighth at 138 pounds, Max Sokolski is ranked sixth at 160 pounds, Donovan Vigueis 10th at 170 pounds, and

Kaden Bergsbaken is ranked ninth at 195 pounds.

The first match begins at 5:30 p.m. with subsequent matches taking place on the hour after that.

Southern Door combines duals into quads

The Southern Door Eagles wrestling team is taking every opportunity to wrestle as many matches as it can this year.

COVID-19 has caused them to scramble for a dual once this year and postpone another, so the WIAA's decision to allow quadrangular and triangular meets was welcome news for the program according to head coach Jerry Englebert.

The lack of matches has been frustrating for Englebert, who has three seniors, a talented class of freshmen, and the fullest roster he had since he took over the program.

The Eagles will wrestle at Bonduel this Thursday with Amherst, Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol and Amherst. It also has a quad meet featuring local opponents Denmark and Kewaunee on January 23rd. Englebert says they are still working on the details for a quad meet next week featuring fellow Packerland Conference team Peshtigo.
