Eagles soar with All-Conference selections

Despite not fielding a soccer squad, Southern Door had plenty of athletes register All-Conference honors this weekend.

 

Football dominated the selections with nineteen including two player of the year honors.

Overbeck was the offensive lineman of the year and Schaefer was the defensive player of the year.

Southern Door looks to avoid deja vu vs. Kewaunee on 104.1 WRLU

The Southern Door Eagles and the Kewaunee Storm will meet again on the gridiron with even more on the line this week when they meet for Level1 1 Playoff action Friday night.

 

The Storm's defense suffocated the Eagles, allowing just 133 yards of total offense in its 33-0 win last week. As for the offense, Mitchell Thompson threw a pair of touchdown passes while Jesse Morales-Hernandez and Logan Steinhorst found the endzone on the ground to lead the Storm past the Eagles. It was the first conference loss for the Eagles all season.

 

Matthew Frea and Reece Robillard will have the call on 104.1 WRLU beginning at 6:30 p.m. with the pregame show followed by kickoff at 7 p.m.

DC United heads to Shawano

The Door County United Swim Team will head out onto the road one final time this regular season on Thursday when they face Shawano.

 

The Door County United Girls High School swim team competed in Small School State at Shorewood High School on Saturday October 16th. This meet was limited to 10 select swimmers which included: Phoebe Bissen (SBHS), Chisty Braun (SBHS), Caitlyn Hasenjager (SEV), Isabella Jimenez Seyfer (SBHS), Julia Kurek (SBHS), Julia Michalski (SBHS), Danica Neville (SDHS), Cassie Rankin (SEV), Anika Steinbach (SBHS), and Booke Strege (SDHS). The team finished 8th of 14 teams in this non-conference invitational, scoring 150 points overall. The girls swam against high schools mainly from Milwaukee and the surrounding areas. Christy Braun finished 3rd overall in the 100 Breaststroke, which scored 16 points for the team. The 200 Yard Medley Relay consisting of Julia Michalski, Christy Braun, Phoebe Bissen, and Danica Neville, finished 6th overall. The 400 Yard Freestyle Relay consisting of Julia Michalski, Danica Neville, Cassie Rankin, and Christy Braun also finished 6th.

 

The first events begin at Shawano at 5 p.m.

Southern Door opens WIAAs with Packerland opponent

The Southern Door Volleyball team will welcome a familiar foe to Brussels as they start their route to the Resch Center Tuesday night with Algoma.

 

The Eagles had the unfortunate opportunity to open the conference tournament against state-ranked Oconto before salvaging a game against Sturgeon Bay late in the day. That snapped a five-match losing streak. The Wolves are 0 for October, losing five matches in that span. That includes a four-game loss to the Eagles on October 7th.

 

Opening serve is set for 7 p.m.

Strege, Grota lead Eagles in Packerland XC championships

Brooke Strege and Ben Grota picked out good times for personal records at Thursday's Packerland Conference Championships in Fish Creek.

 

Grota's 18:08 on the 5K course was good for fourth overall and an All-Packerland First Team selection in his freshman year.  Strege finished in fifth overall with her 21:26. That helped the Eagles to a sixth-place finish with 115 points.

Southern Door, Kewaunee meet for Packerland Championship on 104.1 WRLU

The Packerland Conference title is on the line Friday night when Southern Door makes the trip to Kewaunee on Friday night.

 

Both teams are perfect in Packerland play this season with the Storm coming into the game with six-game winning streak. The Storm have had to scramble for games this season, playing Escanaba last week to a 39-21 victory and Oconto Falls by a 35-12 score the week before that. The Eagles nipped Oconto last week 18-12 with their two losses coming against a pair of state-ranked teams.

Grota, Strege pace Eagles at Fameree Invite

Brooke Strege ran a personal record at Friday's Russ Fameree Invitational hosted by Luxemburg-Casco.

 

She covered the 5K course at Northbrook Country Club in a time of 21:44. Ben Grota led the young boys squad with a time of 18:28.

Southern Door stays perfect in conference on 104.1 WRLU

Southern Door remains undefeated in the conference with a hard-fought win against the Oconto Blue Devils Friday night. Within the first five minutes of the game, Southern Door got a pick-six brought in by defensive end Aleson (#77). After stopping Oconto on their next drive, Southern Door passed the ball to Daoust (#1) resulting in another Eagle touchdown.

 

Throughout the second quarter, no scoring was made until the last couple of minutes. Oconto scored, shutting down the aggressive Eagle defense after a long hard fight. After the next couple drives Eagles fumbled the ball, Bowman (#21) corralled the ball and ran it in for a touchdown.

 

The Eagles ended the half with the ball with the score being 12-12. No scoring was done until the fourth quarter when Peterson (#6) punched the ball in, resulting in the final score 18-12.

Southern Door faces Oconto in Senior Night Showdown on NEW Radio Sports Network

The seniors on the Southern Door football team will celebrate their four years of triumph Friday night when they host Oconto Friday night for Senior Night.

 

The Eagles' two losses were against a pair of top-flight teams in the state in Colby and most recently Marshall. Taylor Schaefer and Jack Peterson combined for 182 yards rushing in the Eagles' 27-0 loss last week to Marshall. The Blue Devils has not won or lost two game in a row all season with their last game a 29-0 win over Mishicot two weeks ago. Games against Abbotsford and Sturgeon Bay were canceled.

 

Matthew Frea and Reece Robillard will have the call on the NEW Radio Sports Network beginning at 6:30 p.m. and the kickoff at 7 p.m.

Eagles volleyball takes down Wolves in four

Southern Door's Anna Olson celebrated senior night in style with a 3-1 victory over Algoma Thursday night.

 

The Eagles captured the win 25-11, 25-16, 19-25, 25-18.

 

Leading the way for the Eagles were Allianna Dufek (3 blocks, 14 kills), Kendra Shimon (17 kills, 13 digs), Anna Olson (33 digs), and Alaina Shimon (45 assists).

 

The Wolves were led by Amelia Robinson (13 Assists, 1 Ace), MyLee Jones (8 Kills, 2 Aces), and Ryley Zimmerman (8 Kills, 20 Digs).

Southern Door volleyball battles Algoma on Senior Night

Seniors on the Southern Door volleyball team will try to make things extra special when they play Algoma on their Senior Night on Thursday.

 

The Eagles soared past Gibraltar earlier this week, beating them 3-0, improving to 4-3 over their last seven matches. The Wolves lost to Sturgeon Bay 3-0 earlier this week, but are playing much better after losing seven of its first eight matches earlier this season. 

 

The match is slated to begin at 7 p.m.

Eagles soar over Vikings in volleyball

The Southern Door Eagles swept the Gibraltar Vikings in three games Tuesday night in volleyball.  The Eagles cruised to victories of 25-16, 25-18, and 25-19.  Anna Olson paced the Eagles with eight aces and ten digs.  Kendra Shimon had to kills with six aces and seven digs to help secure the sweep.  Alaina Shimon played a steady floor game with 26 assists as the Eagles prevailed in Packerland Conference action.

Eagles shut out by Marshall on 104.1 WRLU

Southern Door Eagles took on the Marshall Cardinals Friday night in an intense football game.

 

Southern Door started the game off by returning a kickoff to then shortly turning over on a rushing attempt. With seven minutes left in the first quarter, Canon Siedschlag ran it in for a touchdown. Soon after the Eagles lost the ball possession in their own territory, giving the Cardinals an advantage. Cole Denningston later rushes it in for another touchdown making the score 14-0. Southern Door then started to gain traction by shutting down the Cardinals. No scoring was done through the rest of the second quarter. Halfway through the third quarter, Bryce Frank of the Cardinals scored, missing the extra point leaving the game at 20-0. 

 

Finally in the fourth Frank wrapped up the game by punching the ball through the line of scrimmage resulting in a 27-0 score.

 

Southern Door is at home next week against Oconto and the game can be heard on 104.1 WRLU.

Eagles volleyball outlasts Kewaunee

The Southern Door volleyball team was on the brink of losing its match against Kewaunee before picking up the W after three straight set wins.

 

After dropping the first two sets 23-25 and 15-25, the Eagles soared back by winning the final three 25-19, 25-16 and 15-13.

 

Leading the way for the Eagles was Alaina Shimon (36 assists, 4 aces, 17 digs) ,Kendra Shimon (14 kills), Paige Olson (8 kills, 3 blocks), Anna Olson (30 digs), and Greta Gutschow (6 aces).

 

Southern Door ends up and down week at Marshal on 104.1 WRLU

It has been a week of change for the Southern Door football team heading into their Friday night match-up.

 

Interim head coach Ben Kline officially took over after Ryan Zuelke resigned. Athletic Director Korey Mallien was forced to find a new opponent after Peshtigo was forced to cancel their homecoming matchup against the Eagles.  

 

Enter Marshall

 

Playing in the Eastern Suburban Conference in the Madison-area, Marshall is 6-0 after beating Dodgeland 62-8 last week. They had their game against Cambridge canceled this week, which put them in the same boat as the Eagles. Waterloo and Lancaster were also in the mix for the possible replacement game.  The Eagles are coming off a 40-14 win over Clintonville that saw two different players rush for over 100 yards.
