Southern Door girls prepare for battle with Algoma

The Southern Door Eagles girls basketball team is set to take on Packerland conference foe Algoma on Thursday night.

The Eagles were unable to get the win over non-conference opponent Brillion last time on the court on Monday night. Southern Door started the season 3-0, but has recently struggled since, falling to a current record of 4-6. Ashlyn Delfosse has really begun to provide a spark for the Eagle offense, scoring a team high 18 points in their most recent Packerland conference game against the Sturgeon Bay Clippers.

Algoma is on the other end of a streak, winning four of their last six games, and being in play for a Packerland conference championship. The Wolves are led by a combination of players, with Ryley Zimmerman and Halle Panger being the top scoring producers. Despite their around .500 record last season, the Wolves had the Eagles number last season, winning both of the matchups.

Tip from Southern Door is set for 7:30 P.M.

Southern Door, Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol wrestling head to Bay Port for quad meet

Three of the area's four wrestling teams will head to Suamico on Tuesday for a quadrangular meet.

Southern Door, Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol, and the Luxemburg-Casco JV squad are scheduled to face Wabeno, Bay Port, and Wrightstown. No specific matchups have been announced, but wrestling is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.

The Eagles and possibly some Spartans wrestlers have already had a taste of wrestling in Bay Port's gym this season after competing in the Battle of the Bay earlier this month.

Last weekend, Southern Door's Mason Motquin captured the title at 120 pounds, collecting three pins, a technical fall, and a major decision on the day. Hayden Jeanquart just missed out on a title himself with a second-place finish at 170 pounds. Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol's Spencer Madsen nearly pinned his way to a tournament title at 126 pounds. He started his day with a technical fall before winning by pin his following four matches. Ben Roman (285, 3rd place) and Aldo Rangel (120, 5th place) each won their final match of the day as they captured medals as well.

The Eagles' next game is on Thursday at home against Algoma.

Daoust drops career high to guide Eagles to win over Destiny

The Southern Door Eagles boys basketball team wrapped up their tournament trip to Cedarburg with a 80-56 win over Destiny thanks in part to a Drew Daoust masterclass.

Daoust was able to pour in a career high 42 points in the convincing win Saturday night. After scoring 29 points in the loss to Cedarburg, Daoust raised his scoring to an impressive 29.4 points per game, good enough for 9th in the state.

Sophomore Caden Pierre scored 10 points as well for the Eagles, with Jared Hawkey, Taylor Schaefer and Jack Peterson all scoring 7 points each.

The Eagles will next take on rival Sturgeon Bay Tuesday night.

Cedarburg spoils Daoust's big night

Drew Daoust scored 29 points, but it was not enough as Cedarburg beat Southern Door Friday 68-60.

Each half ended with identical 34-30 scores to reach the fateful conclusion. Daoust's big night was aided by five three-pointers and a perfect 6-6 night from the free throw line. Taylor Schaefer added 14 points, but no other player scored more than seven points.

Cedarburg had three players reach double figures, led by 16 points by Jacob Fries.

Southern Door girls make short trip to Sturgeon Bay

The Southern Door girls' basketball team will kick off their weekend with a game against county rival Sturgeon Bay.

The Eagles fell short in their game on Monday, losing to Seymour 55-43. Allianna Dufek is averaging nearly a double-double each game, score about 15 points and grabbing nine rebounds a game.

Autumn Rass scored 14 points, but no other Clippers player could get their offense going against a tough Sevastopol squad as they lost 95-23 in their game on Tuesday.

Tip time is set for 7:30 p.m.

Eagles boys travel to state contender Brillion

The Southern Door Eagles will take on one of the best teams in Division 3 as they travel to the Brillion Lions on Tuesday night.

The Eagles are fresh off of a matchup against the Sevastopol Pioneers, where they walked out with a 94-40 win Friday night. An attempt at 100 points for the Eagles was made, but fell short in the last few minutes of the game. A matchup against Brillion will need a repeat performance from Jared Hawkey, who logged a triple double Friday night. Hawkey finished with a full statline of 29 points, 16 rebounds, 10 assists, 6 steals and 3 blocks. Alongside a strong inside performance of Drew Daoust, Southern Door may have found their recipe for success this season.

Brillion has been strong all season so far, proving their #2 rank in Division 3 so far, being 5-0. Their closest win this season has been a 26 point win over Kewaunee, besides that win every other win has been even more dominant than that. Jeremy Lorenz has had a strong showing so far this season, averaging 22.2 points per game.

Tip from Brillion is scheduled for 7:00 P.M.

Eagles girls host Thunder

The Southern Door Eagles girls' basketball team looks to rebound from their tough loss to Sevastopol last week with a game on Monday against non-conference opponent Seymour.

Payton Gilbertson and Ashlyn Delfosse each scored 15 points and Alianna Dufek added 14 points, but it was not enough to hold off undefeated Sevastopol in a 53-51 defeat. It dropped the Eagles to 3-4 on the season and 0-3 in the Packerland Conference.

The Thunder have suffered some hard luck as they have jumped out to an 0-7 mark. They lost to Menasha their last time out 45-41, their first loss of single digits all season up to this point. Keira VandeHei leads the time with 8.5 points per game.

Tip off is set for 7:30 p.m.

The Southern Door Eagles made 39 shots from the field in its 94-40 win over Sevastopol Friday night.

The Eagles led by 30 at the break as Jared Hawkey scored 18 of his game-high 31 points in the opening frame without shooting a free throw or making one from behind the arc. Drew Daoust scored 24 points and Taylor Schaefer added 14 points in the win for the Eagles.

Eagles girls set for battle with Sevastopol

The Southern Door Eagles girls basketball team will take their home court Thursday night as they host the Sevastopol Pioneers.

After starting the season 3-0, the Eagles have slipped, losing their last three games bringing them back down to .500. Overall, even scoring for the Southern Door team has kept them in games, as 5 girls on the roster are averaging over 8.5 points per game. Sevastopol was able to take down the Eagles in both matchup last season, so Southern Door will look to turn the tides on their success in recent meetings.

For Sevastopol, they’ve continued and expanded on their success from last season, as they head into this matchup at 5-0 on the year. Both Bailey and Naomi have lived up to the potential they were expected to have this season, as they have both averaged 17.2 and 12.5 respectively. The Pioneers closest win came against Shiocton, when they defeated the Chiefs by 17.

Tip from Southern Door is set for 7:30.

Eagles Wrestling posts strong outing in first duals

Our SD wrestlers have quickly jumped into the 2022-2023 season.  It will be an interesting season as we have a few first year seniors joining Jonas Jandrin our lone returning senior.  We have a good core group of juniors and sophomores joined by a nice group of freshman.  The freshman group includes 4 female wrestlers who hope to compete in the first WIAA female post season tournament.

This past weekend we opened up at Stratford with duals against Brillion, Crandon, Stratford, Wausau East and Wittenburg Birnamwood.  Still working to fill some holes in our lineup and getting everyone into the right weights but we were able to fill most weight classes by moving some wrestlers up.  We started out slow in our first two matches but looked better as the day progressed.  As a team we finished the day at 1-4.  Individually our best finisher was Hayden Jeanquart at 4-1.  Mason Motquin and Jonas Jandrin were both 3-2.  Good learning day for everyone.

Last night we had a dual at Two Rivers with Denmark.  Kewaunee was also there but we did not wrestle them.  We will see Kewaunee in a couple weeks at their tournament and again in January for our conference dual.  In our first dual we met a very good Denmark team.  We wrestled better than the final score losing 17-60.  Our second dual with with Two Rivers was a very exciting match for the team.  Trailing 12-34 we fought back to earn a 39-34 win with three pins and a decision in the last four matches.  Both Mason Motquin and Wyatt Wilke were 2-0 on the night.

Next up is the Battle on the Bay this weekend at Bayport.  One of the premier tournaments in the state with even more teams this year.

Kewaunee, Southern Door compete in wrestling quad

Two area wrestling teams will get their second taste of competitive action Tuesday night when they head to Two Rivers for a quadrangular meet.

Kewaunee, Southern Door, Denmark, and host Two Rivers will all compete in the meet. The Eagles are coming off a weekend in Stratford, where they faced Wittenberg-Birnamwood, Stratford, Wausau East, Brillion, and Crandon.

The Storm's Mitchell Thompson picked up where he left last season off with a championship in the Papermaker Invitational in Kimberly Saturday. Thompson was one of two wrestlers finishing in the top 3 on the podium on Saturday. Ezra Ducat took third in his bracket.

Two Rivers competed in last week's Watertown Tom McGarvie Earlybird Scramble and Denmark went undefeated in the Kiel Multi-Team Duals 5-0.

First matches begin 5:30 p.m.

Eagles play host to Bulldogs

The Southern Door Eagles are set to welcome in Peshtigo as they take on the Bulldogs on Tuesday night.

Southern Door (2-0 Overall, 1-0 Packerland) is coming off of a strong win over the Oconto Blue Devils, highlighted by star Point Guard Drew Daoust scoring 33 points on only 8 shots. One player who might not have been talked about enough was Jared Hawkey, who did everything on the defensive end against the Blue Devils. Southern Door split the season series against the Bulldogs last season, losing the matchup on the road, but salvaging the series at home near the end of the season.

Peshtigo (2-1 Overall, 1-0 Packerland) was able to roll over the Sevastopol Pioneers in the Packerland opener 68-24 last Thursday. The Bulldogs are led by their size in their forward position, having their center stand at 6’9”. The point per game leader is Kaine Fort, the forward mentioned earlier, who has had a strong start to the season, averaging 14.7 points per game and 13.7 rebounds per game.

Tipoff from Brussels is scheduled for 7:30.

Southern Door wrestlers start season at Stratford

The Southern Door wrestling team will face stiff competition right out of the box on Saturday when they open the season at Stratford.

The team will have a mix of new and experienced wrestlers when they take the mat against Wausau East, Brillion, Wittenberg-Birnamwood, the host school, and Crandon. Stratford has historically been one of the top teams in the state, jockeying with Coleman on who advances to the state team tournament.

Trevor Englebert was the top-performing wrestler from last year's squad, qualifying for the sectional tournament before falling in the consolation semifinals.

First matches begin at 9 a.m.

Three-point barrage leads Eagles boys past Oconto

Southern Door hit seven three-pointers to top host Oconto 64-52.

Drew Daoust drilled four three-pointers himself en route to a 33-point evening for the Eagles, which took a 10-point advantage into the break before coasting through the second half. Jared Hawkey added 13 as he hit two of the other three made three-pointers in the game for the Eagles.

Carter Koch scored 18 points, and Kadin Baxter added 13 points for the Blue Devils in the loss.

Eagles girls travel to Peshtigo for Packerland battle

After two back to back losses, the Southern Door Eagles girls basketball team will look to get right against the Peshtigo Bulldogs.

Southern Door started their season off fast, posting a 3-0 record after their opening round victory over Denmark in a holiday tournament. But, with losses by 5 and 8 to Cedar Grove Belgium and Oconto respectively, the Eagles will look to end their losing streak at two. The Eagles have been led by their seniors, as Callie Miller and Allianna Dufek have both averaged over 10 for the team so far this season.

Peshtigo has gotten off to a challenging start so far this season, losing their first three games of the year. The Bulldogs are coming off of a loss to the Sevastopol Pioneers 55-34 where they were led by Akira Smalls with 10 points on 3-5 shooting.

Tip is scheduled for 7:30 in Peshtigo.

Eagles head to Oconto for matchup with Blue Devils

Waiting for them will be the Oconto Blue Devils, who are 2-0 on the season with two strong non-conference victories so far. Kadin Baxter has done most of the heavy lifting for the Blue Devils so far this season, scoring 24 in their win over Shiocton.

Tip is set for 7:30 in Oconto.
