The Eagles came into this matchup 5-1 overall and undefeated in conference play while the Lions entered the matchup at 8-0 on the season. The Eagles trailed early on and found themselves down by 14 points at the end of the first half, 39-25. Southern Door remains perfect in conference

The Southern Door Eagles boys’ basketball program remained undefeated in the Packerland Conference on Tuesday night with a win over the Algoma Wolves, 70-47.

The Eagles and Alex Daoust propelled their way to a commanding double-digit half time lead, 35-22. Daoust dropped eight points in the first half and finished the game with 21. Algoma could not phase the Eagles in the second half of play either, even with a 14 point performance by Carter Zimmerman. Southern Door improved to 5-0 in conference and face the Brillion Lions on January 4th, 2021. Algoma declined to 0-4 in conference but will have another conference opportunity on January 5th, 2021 against Peshtigo.

Algoma takes a doozy to Southern Door

The Algoma Wolves girls’ basketball team suffered a loss to the Southern Door Eagles on Monday evening, 68-40.

The Wolves pulled ahead for an early 3-0 lead but could not hold on for long as the Eagles gathered a 15-5 scoring run led by senior Nicole Norton who had 14 points in the first half. After consecutive defensive stops by Southern Door, the Wolves were unable to gather a scoring rhythm and finished the first half down 29-11. Junior Ella Madden of the Wolves started out the second half with a swish jumper but within a matter of seconds the Eagles stopped the momentum with a basket of their own. The Eagles applied a half-court press midway through the second half to the Wolves and that was all she wrote. Norton led all scorers, finishing with 30 points on the day while Algoma was led by sophomore Emily Kirchman with 15 points. The Eagles improved to 4-0 in conference and head back home tomorrow to face the undefeated Brillion Lions at 7pm. The Wolves remained winless and are set to play next on January 4th, 2021 against Sevastopol.

The wins against NEW Lutheran and Oconto came off a pair of virtually buzzer-beater shots made by Nate Everhard, giving them two-point victories in each. Englebert recaps opening weekend versus Bay Port

While every wrestling season is unique in its own way, this season we will be happy with any season at all and it will surely be one to remember. This past Saturday we were scheduled to wrestle Coleman. Thursday afternoon we were informed that Coleman could not wrestle for Covid reasons and had to withdraw from the dual.

Current WIAA guidelines only allow a team to wrestle every 7 days so we knew if we couldn’t get another competition scheduled for Saturday we would get one less chance to compete. Fortunately, we were able to work things out with Bay Port due to a schedule change they had earlier in the week. Unfortunately, they had already told their wrestlers that they would not be wrestling Saturday so some wrestlers had other commitments and some were overweight by the time we got the times and location hammered out so they could not safely make weight.

Thankfully the WIAA changed the rules for this season allowing us to wrestle numerous matches during dual meets. Using this format we quickly wrestled the only 5 Varsity duals we could arrange. The coaches then arranged 30 exhibition matches. It was a very good experience for everyone with opportunities to wrestle up and down weights. By matching wrestlers by skill, we were able to get some very good matches for both teams.

In the varsity dual, the final score was SD 48 - Bay Port 22. Winning for SD were Alex Buhr over Trevor Finger (2-0), Kyle Conard over Colton Klimex (6-0), and Grant Englebert over Brian Priebe (fall 1:49). Also winning by FFT were Griffin Slezewski, Jonas Jandrin, Riley Phillips, Brodie Overbeck, Mason Motquin, and Spencer Slezewski.

Coming into the season we were looking forward to a strong freshman class. They did well in their first high school matches with the highlight being Buhr’s 2-0 varsity win at 126. Other freshmen include Mason Motquin 106, Spencer Slezewski and Abi Tooley 113, Trevor Englebert 120, Zach Lynch and Thomas Jackson 145, and Hayden Jeanquart 170.

It seems that moving forward the only thing we know for sure is that things will change. We’ll try to be ready for whatever is thrown at us each week. This Saturday we are scheduled to start our conference duals at Oconto. Wrestling is currently scheduled to start at 10:00.

Southern Door chalks up a win over Sturgeon Bay

The Sturgeon Bay Clippers fell to the Southern Door Eagles on Monday night, 75-32. The Eagles tallied the first points of the game while the Clippers fired right back with a three-point shot to gain their only lead of the game, 3-2. The Clippers entered this game without any previous game experience and it showed with the Eagles being able to control the tempo throughout the whole game. The first half ended with the Eagles up 36-13. Southern Door was all gas no brakes in the second half while the Clippers couldnt find a rhythm on offense. The game resulted in a 43 point victory for the Eagles. Sturgeon Bay starts 0-1 in conference and plays Peshtigo at home next Tuesday. The Eagles move to 3-0 and visit Peshtigo on Thursday night.

Southern Door hits the road for conference

The Southern Door Eagles will hit the road for a conference matchup against the Oconto Blue Devils on Tuesday night. The Eagles are coming off a last-second shot victory over NEW Lutheran and are 1-1 on the season, while Oconto has had success early on with a 2-0 start. Southern Door is trying to fill the role of Ryan Claflin who graduated last season and continues his career at UWGB. The Eagles still remain upperclassmen heavy with Alex Daoust and Devin Schinktgen leading the way. Daoust gathered 16 points for the Eagles last game while Schinktgen followed with 11 points. The first whistle is at 7:30 pm.

Southern Door outwrestles Bay Port

The Southern Door wrestling team won its first dual of the season on Saturday, beating Bay Port 48-22 in a spur-of-the-moment ordeal.

The meet was scheduled just a day prior after Coleman had to back out of its dual against the Eagles due to COVID-19 concerns. The Pirates themselves were not wrestling with a full team,  forfeiting seven of the 14 weights. Southern Door also wrestled with less than a full line-up, giving up points in two weight classes and forfeiting a common one with Bay Port. The Eagles got their first win of the season from Alex Buhr, who won a close 2-0 match over Trevor Finger. Kyle Conard won his match at 152 pounds with a 6-0 decision over Colton Klimek while Grant Englebert followed up a few weight classes later at 170 pounds with a pin. Owen Noel (pin of Trevor Englebert) and Matt Grzybowski (major decision against Hayden Jeanquart) got the only contested wins for the Pirates.

The Eagles are back in action on Saturday against Oconto.

Southern Door wrestling scraps Coleman, scrimmages Bay Port

The Southern Door wrestling team will have a shorter drive than originally planned when they host Bay Port for a scrimmage.

In the past, this weekend has been reserved for a triple dual against Stratford and two other teams, but multi-team meets have been ditched for the 2020-2021 season due to COVID-19 concerns. With teams only able to schedule one dual a week, the Eagles then scheduled defending state champion Coleman, but even that dual was recently scrapped. Now the Eagles, led by state qualifiers Grant Englebert and Griffin Slezewski, will wrestle against Bay Port after Pirates came to Brussels last year for a double-dual.  With several of its top wrestlers not making the trip, the Pirates beat the Eagles 51-30.

Wrestling begins at 9 a.m.

The teams continued to trade baskets in the second half, but a put-back shot at the buzzer by Nate Everard provided the difference.

That was Everard's first made field goal of the game. Alex Daoust led the way for the Eagles with 16 points for the Eagles with Devin Schinktgen chipping in another 11. Marshal Bukowski led the Blazers with 20 points.

Southern Door improved to 1-1 in the Packerland Conference and travel to Oconto next Tuesday.

The Eagles saw Alex Daoust (15), Devin Schinktgen (14), and Logan Jeanquart (10) all hit double figures on Tuesday night, but ultimately fell to Denmark 69-56. Southern Door came out in the second half with a vengeance grabbing the lead for a moment, 38-37. The Vikings went on a second-half run, scoring seven straight points which resulted in an Eagles loss. Southern Door boys' basketball battles Denmark

The Southern Door boys' basketball team gets their season going with a non-conference matchup in Brussels Tuesday night against Denmark.

The Eagles finished last season with a share of the Packerland Conference title in its first season under Pete Claflin. The team lost a big piece of their success with their leading scorer and rebounder Ryan Claflin now suiting up down the highway at UWGB. The Eagles still do have Alex Daoust and Nick Baudhuin, who were the second and third-leading scorers from last years' squad that saw their season end in the regional final against Kohler.

The Vikings were in the middle of the pack of the Northeastern Conference but return their top three scorers from last year's squad that actually tipped the Eagles in the season opener last year 65-62. Donavan Short returns to build on last year when he led the Vikings in scoring and rebounding.

Tuesday's game begins at 7:30 p.m.
