Bousley prepares for state meet

Southern Door freshman Emma Bousley will take on her biggest stage yet on Saturday when she runs in the WIAA State Cross Country meet in Wisconsin Rapids.

Bousley earned her spot as one of the top five runners not competing as a qualified team member. She reached the leaderboard in 10th place at the Manitowoc Lutheran sectional with a time of 21:23. She has cracked the 21:30 barrier five times, including two times breaking 21 minutes.

Bousley and fellow Packerland runner Hannah Miller of Kewaunee will both line up in Corral 10 at the Division 3 Girls State Meet Race, which begins at noon on Saturday.

Eagles face Chilton in level two clash

Southern Door will take on the Chilton Tigers in a WIAA regional semifinal matchup in Brussels Friday night.

The Eagles, after rolling over the Brillion Tigers 49-0 last Friday, will take on another Eastern Wisconsin Conference team in Chilton. The Tigers have been tough competition for a lot of teams this year, led by their great defense. Southern Door has arguably one of the best defenses in their section of the bracket, if not their sectional in whole. The Eagle offense has been able to show their strides as of late as well, putting up 40 points in back to back weeks against the Clippers and the Tigers. They will look to put more up to get them to the regional finals.

Chilton defeated the Clintonville Truckers 7-6 in a low scoring defensive battle. The Tigers were able to pick off Quarterback Kade Rosenow twice, who was in the top of the state in passing yards and touchdowns. Chilton is able to run it on the ground well, starting with their running back Jared Gehl who was able to run for 129 yards against the Truckers. The two teams have similar strengths on offense and defense, so it should be set up for a great game in Brussels.

Kickoff is set for 7:00 P.M.

Bousley soars to state meet

Freshman Emma Bousley is one-for-one in her bids for the state meet in her young high school cross-country career for Southern Door.

Bousley ran a time of 21:23 to clinch the state berth and a 10th-place finish. The Eagles girls finished in 14th place with 361 points.

Ben Grota just missed his own bid to the state meet, finishing in 9th place with a 5K time of 17:40. The Eagles boys' took 13th place with 275 points.

Eagles fly past Lions on 104.1 WRLU

The Southern Door Eagles avenged their 2020 playoff loss to Brillion in a big way on Friday night, beating them 49-0.

Zach Lynch tallied three touchdowns on the ground while Jonas Jandrin scored two of his own through the air and on the ground. Drew Daoust was the one that provided Jandrin the toss to put the game well out of reach for the Eagles. Christian Counard even got in on the act on defense, taking an interception return for the touchdown.

A feel-good moment of the game happened late when backup quarterback Lauden Berg found his brother Braylon for a touchdown pass.

The Eagles will be back in action next week when they host Chilton in Brussels.

Eagles volleyball travels to Tigers for regional finals

The Southern Door Eagles will have to face a tall task to get to sectionals as they travel to Howards Grove on Saturday.

Southern Door was able to battle back against the Lancers of Manitowoc Lutheran on Thursday night. The Eagles faced an early deficit after dropping the first two sets by a score of 17-25 and 18-25. After some changes were made and a shift of momentum, Southern Door battled all the way back to force a 5th set after a 2-2 series tie. The Eagles would go on to win 15-13 in that last set, completing the reverse sweep of the Lancers.

Howards Grove ran through the Algoma Wolves with ease, with a sweep in scores of 25-6, 25-10 and 25-8. The Tigers are the reigning champions in the state in Division 5, and will be a tall task for the Eagles. Southern Door is rolling in with some momentum and recently some good volleyball being played, but we will see if that is enough for the Eagles.

The match is set to be played in Howards Grove at 7:00.

Eagles volleyball comeback sends them to regional final

With their backs against the wall, the Southern Door Eagles pulled off the comeback Thursday night against Manitowoc Lutheran 17-25, 18-25, 25-23, 25-13, 15-13.

Leading the Eagles back from a two-deficit to a five-set victory were Kendra Shimon (5 aces, 16 kills, nine digs), Allianna Dufek (9 blocks, seven kills), Paige Olson (10 kills), Greta Gutschow (25 digs), and Alaina Shimon (36 assists, four kills, three aces).

The Eagles will now face defending state champion Howards Grove on the road for a 7 p.m. regional final match.

Eagle runners set for Saturday's race

Southern Door will travel south to Meadow Links Golf Course on Saturday for their sectional meet in Division three.

The Eagles have had success this season from their boys team, led by sophomore Ben Grota. Grota has run fast all season, and picked up a PR at the Panther Invite on September 29th. He ran a 17:14 that day, which was good for fifth place. Every runner on the boys team has had a personal record recorded this season.

The girls team was led by Brooke Strege, until she was shut down towards the end of the season. From there, Emma Bousley, a freshman, has really taken off and impressed this season. Bousley ran a 20:55 also at the Panther Invite, where she took 12th place in the girls standings.

The runners will look to potentially make a trip to state if they run well on Saturday.

Eagles look to get past Lions in WIAA postseason

After receiving a one seed in the WIAA reveal show on Saturday, the Packerland conference champion Southern Door Eagles will be back in action as they host the Brillion Lions.

Southern Door ended their season perfect at 9-0 overall and 7-0 in conference play. A big factor of that record has been the defense, who was able to shut out the Sturgeon Bay Clippers last week, and not allow them to even reach the red zone on any of their drives. Drew Daoust and Zack Lynch have also been key contributors to the offense to keep them afloat and to make sure the team is not one dimensional. The Eagles have had some trouble with Brillion in the past, but they are looking to make things right with a win on Friday night.

Brillion had more of a challenging year than most expected, with their overall record being 3-6 and 3-4 in the Eastern Wisconsin Conference. The Lions were led to that record and the eight seed in the playoffs by play from their defense and Running Back Jaden Bastian. Brillion was able to sneak into the playoffs thanks to losing to some top teams in their conference and overall strength of schedule.

The game is scheduled for 7:00 kickoff in Brussels.

DCU swimmers continue season at Shawano

The Door County United Swim Team will take their talents west to Shawano High School for the Conference Sprints Invitational.

The team finished strong at Small School State on Saturday, October 15th. The team finished 8th overall out of 16 teams scoring 165 total points. The invitational had both swimming and diving included in the scoring, however, DCU does not have a diving team. The competition consisted of teams from Milwaukee and the surrounding area. Danica Neville (SDHS) had a phenomenal meet, finishing 10th overall in the 100-yard backstroke and 5th overall in the 100-yard breaststroke, scoring 28 points. Cassie Rankin (SEV) finished 8th in the 100-yard butterfly and 9th in the 500-yard freestyle, scoring 20 points overall. Sanya Wienke (SBHS) was very successful with her 7th-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley and 14th place in the 100-yard freestyle, scoring 15 points for the team. Caitlyn Hasenjager (SEV) and Chloe Bissen (SBHS) both had great meets as well, scoring 13 and 5 points, respectively. Despite not coming home with the win, the team swam exceptionally well and held their own against some teams from outside the conference.

Thursday's meet begins at 5:30 p.m.

Eagles advance over Gibraltar in WIAA volleyball tournament

The Southern Door Eagles will travel to Manitowoc Lutheran on Thursday after sweeping Gibraltar in an opening-round matchup in Brussels on Tuesday.

The Eagles beat the Vikings 25-11, 25-20, 25-17.

Standouts include Alaina Shimon (4 aces, 2 blocks, 25 assists), Ashlyn Delfosse (4 aces), Paige Olson (2 blocks, 11 kills), Kendra Shimon (8 kills), and Greta Gutschow (17 digs).

Manitowoc Lutheran finished its season 5-2 en route to an overall record of 15-14. They swept New Holstein 3-0 in their first-round match on Tuesday. Match time is set for 7 p.m.

Packerland conference football season ends with Eagles on top

The Packerland Conference football season has come to an end with the playoffs starting up this Friday. 4 teams from the Packerland made the playoffs, with three teams being in Division 5 and one being in Division 6.

The Southern Door Eagles were able to claim their first Packerland conference title for the first time since 2017, as they ran the table on the regular season and finished 9-0 overall. They clinched at least a share of the title, after defeating the reigning conference champions Kewaunee Storm 19-14, the week before they claimed it outright after defeating rival Sturgeon Bay 41-0.

The two other schools in the area finished second and fourth, with that being Kewaunee and Sturgeon Bay respectively. Those two teams will match up against each other in Kewaunee on Friday night, as Southern Door hosts Brillion in Division five play. The only other playoff team, Bonduel, travels to Crivitz for the first round.

Grota, Bousley pace Eagles at conference XC meet

The Southern Door cross country's final tune-up before the state series featured some strong performances.

For the boys, Ben Grota took second with a time of 18:04, but a suspect time may bump him to the top spot. The girls had Emma Bousley leading the way for the Eagles with a 5K time of 20:55, which was good for fourth place overall. As a team, the boys too fourth and the girls finished in sixth.

Eagles volleyball welcomes Sturgeon Bay

The Southern Door Eagles volleyball team renew its county rivalry during the last week of the regular season on Tuesday.

The Eagles had a great weekend in Brillion, winning three of its four matches, including its finale against Brillion 2-1. The three wins snapped a two match losing streak for the Eagles.

The Clippers beat Algoma 3-1 to snap its own two-match losing streak. It is has been a part of a theme for the Clippers, which has two winning streaks of three on the season.

First serve is  7 p.m.

Eagles take down Storm Friday night

The Southern Door Eagles were able to out duel the Kewaunee Storm, as they took home the win 19-14 in front of a large crowd in Brussels.

The Eagles delivered the games first two scores, as Drew Daoust ran one in from a yard out, and after a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, Daoust was able to find Derek Schinktgen to make it 13-0 early. That lead would last all the way through halftime, as the Eagles soared into halftime on a high note leading by 13.

Kewaunee was not ready to back down however, as Mitchell Thompson would deliver two dimes to open receivers for deep back to back touchdowns, and Kewaunee found themselves up 14-13 at the beginning of the fourth quarter. The Eagles would then put together a long methodical drive, ending with yet again another Drew Daoust rushing touchdown, but failed on a trick play 2 point conversion to make the score 19-14.

The Storm would have one last chance to score, but Christian Counard would come up with his second game winning interception of the year. NRSN’s Gary Barta was able to catch up with Counard and Drew Daoust after their performances.

The win keeps Southern Door undefeated, and in sole possession of first place over Kewaunee. Kewaunee adds a loss on their record, as they look to regroup next week before the postseason. Southern Door will take on Sturgeon Bay in the Clippers homecoming, and the Storm will host Peshtigo.

Eagles volleyball lose to Wolves

The Southern Door Eagles won the first set but could not recapture that magic in a 3-1 defeat to Algoma on Thursday night.

The Eagles won the first set 25-21, before losing the next three sets 15-25, 19-25, 19-25.

Leading the way for the Eagles on Thursday were Kendra Shimon (11 Kills), Alianna Dufek (8 kills), Alaina Shimon (31 assists).

Eagles welcome in Storm for Packerland showdown

The Southern Door Eagles with their stingy defense will welcome in the only other undefeated team in the Packerland conference on Friday, for a potential game of the year.

Southern Door (7-0 Overall, 5-0 Packerland), comes into this game off of another shutout, this time on the road as they took down the Oconto Blue Devils 35-0. The Eagles starting defense has only allowed 6 points this entire season, which came against the Mishicot Indians when Logan Marquardt was able to connect with Adam Backus for a 20 yard touchdown. Southern Door has outscored its Packerland conference opponents by a score of 157-12 so far. The defense has led this team, but so has its running game, led by Junior Zack Lynch. Lynch has put up 840 yards and 13 touchdowns this year, which has complimented Sophomore Quarterback Drew Daoust well, who has thrown for 793 yards and 11 touchdowns. The Eagles have not faced a test like the Storm however, and will look to get past the two blowout losses of 33-0 and 39-0 last season early.

Kewaunee (7-0 Overall, 5-0 Packerland), ran all over the Sturgeon Bay Clippers last week, as they were able to go to Memorial Stadium and come back with a 55-14 win. The Storm’s offense was led by the legs of Owen Carlson and Mitchell Thompson. Thompson and Carlson both ran for two touchdowns each, and put the game out of reach of the Clippers early. Kewaunee has scored 40 points in each of their Packerland conference games and have been bulldozing through teams. The Storm have also played their fair share of defense as well, led by Brayden Obry and Demardo Echols. Kewaunee has outscored their Packerland conference opponents 249-48 so far this season.

We will see what happens when the immovable object of the Southern Door Eagles defense meets the unstoppable force of the Kewaunee Storm’s offense. The battle in Brussels will be set up for a good one. The kickoff is set for 7:00 P.M.

Eagles volleyball travels to Algoma

The Algoma Wolves will play host to the Southern Door Eagles in a Packerland conference volleyball match.

Southern Door (4-2 Packerland, 15-9 Overall), is coming off of a 3-0 sweep of Gibraltar at home during its pink out night. The Eagles started out slow, losing to Sevastopol and Peshtigo in the first two matches of the conference season, but have since turned it around winning their last four matches in the Packerland, and will look to make it five after their trip to Algoma is done.

Algoma (3-3 Packerland, 12-8 Overall), fell in four sets to the Sturgeon Bay Clippers on Tuesday, but have played good volleyball this season, and have better success than they did last season. The Wolves were the ones that knocked the Eagles out of the WIAA playoffs last season, so they are a team the Eagles are familiar with.

The match in Algoma is set to begin at 7:00 P.M.

Southern Door hosts Pink Out versus Gibraltar

The Southern Door Eagles girls volleyball team will host the Gibraltar Vikings for their annual pink out on Tuesday night.

Southern Door (3-2 Packerland, 14-9 Overall), is on a 3 match win streak in conference play after starting out 0-2. The Eagles will be wearing specially made for this match pink jerseys for the Pink Out night. The Eagles are third in the Packerland conference, and are only a half game back of being tied for second as they have played one less conference game.

Gibraltar (1-4 Packerland, 5-13 Overall), has been much improved this year compared to last, already winning their first conference match. Gibraltar ended up losing to Sturgeon Bay in their most recent match, but they even took that match to 5 sets in a close finish, so the Vikings could be prone to pull off some upsets to end the year.

The match is set for 7:00 in the Eagle Gym at Southern Door.
