The Southern Door Eagles girl’s basketball program will tip-off their season in Packerland Conference play against the hosting NEW Lutheran Blazers. Both teams are separated by only 29 miles of roadway and are conference foes. NEW Lutheran is coming off a 2019-20 season that finished with 12 wins. Blazers head coach Nicki Natzke has put together an impressive home game resume with three-quarters of her team’s wins coming at home last season. Southern Door enters this season opening matchup with nearly half their wins coming from away games last season. The Eagles racked up 11 wins in 2019-20 which was good enough for a fifth place finish in conference play. Tip-off is set for Tuesday at 7:30pm.

A newly expanded wrestling room came at the right time for the Southern Door wrestling team.

The program expanded its room to include an extra 42 feet of space to practice, something important as Southern Door and wrestling teams across the state try to make it through the pandemic with their season intact. Gone are the large weekend tournaments and multi-team duals that get wrestlers between 30 and 40 matches a year. WIAA rules allow teams to have single team duals once every seven days with the opportunity to get extra matches if the numbers allow. Southern Door head coach Jerry Englebert says practices, which started on November 23rd, also look a lot different.

For matches and practices, he says masks will be the biggest adjustment.

Despite all the changes, he is optimistic they will be able to get through the season,

The Southern Door Eagles football team won plenty of awards as the Packerland Conference announced its All-Conference teams on Sunday.

 

Brodie Overbeck won the awards for best offensive and defensive lineman of the year while Alex Daoust took top offensive player honors and Nick Baudhuin garnered best defensive player honors. The Eagles had 11 first-team, six second-team, and one honorable mention. Daoust and Baudhuin were unanimous selections for quarterback and running back respectively. 

 

The Eagles finished in second place in the Packerland Conference and finished their season on Friday when they lost to Brillion 14-6 in the first round of the WIAA Playoffs. The full Packerland Conference All-Conference Team announcement is below:

The Southern Door Eagles football team saw their comeback fall just out of reach Friday night, falling to Brillion 14-6 on the road.

 

Defense ruled the night early as both teams made big stands during big drives to take the game into the half at 0-0.  The Eagles would strike first early in the third quarter as Alex Daoust used his legs first for a long gain before punching it in from three yards out to make it 6-0. The extra point was blocked and the Lions would take the lead later in the quarter when Sam Galoff scored from a yard out and drilled the extra point. The Lions would ice the game with less than two minutes remaining in the game when Carter Stebane scampered in from nine yards out and Galoff converted on the extra point.

 

The  Eagles would make one final push towards the Lions' red zone. In the closing moments, Daoust found an open receiver in the endzone for what appeared to be a last-second touchdown. Instead, the referees ruled he was out of bounds and the game ended in disappointment for the Eagles. Southern Door ended their truncated campaign 4-4.

 

 

A chance to extend a unique 2020 season is on the line Friday night when the Southern Door Eagles travel to Brillion to take on the Lions.

 

The Eagles come into the game 4-3, falling in its de facto Packerland Conference championship game last week 39-22. The Lions finished their season 7-0, winning their regular-season finale against Kiel 26-13. Both teams won their contests against their single similar opponent with wins over Peshtigo. The Lions have used a wide cast of players to run the ball this season with at least six rushers averaging over six yards a carry. They are led in that category by Sam Galoff, who has 656 yards and 10 touchdowns on the season on just 90 carries. The Eagles counter with their senior tandem of Alex Daoust and Nick Baudhuin. Daoust led the Packerland Conference with 783 passing yards and 12 touchdown passes while Baudhuin led the conference with 870 rushing yards.

The Southern Door Eagles received a # 3 seed from the WIAA in Division III football playoff seeding.  The Eagles will travel to Brillion to take on the Lions next Friday night at 7 pm.  The winner of that game will play the winner of the #1 Amherst and #4 Peshtigo on Thursday, November 19.   102.1 MoreFM will broadcast the game starting at 6:30 pm with the pregame show.  The game will also be streamed on the NEW Radio Sports Network.

Southern Door played catch up all night long on the gridiron Friday night as they fell to Bonduel 39-22 in Brussels.

 

The Bears opened the scoring in the first quarter when quarterback Noah Weier found Carson Robiadek in the flat for the game's first touchdown. The two would team up for the Bears' second touchdown early in the second quarter. On an apparent busted play, Logan Majewski was able to take an end-around for a 40-yard touchdown to extend the Bears lead. After Weier threw his third touchdown pass of the half, Eagles quarterback Alex Daoust got the Eagles on the board with a slant pass to Marcus Marchant to end the second half. The Eagles were then able to cut the deficit in half when Daoust found Jack Peterson, who was able to break a couple of tackles and tightrope the sideline to score from 20-plus yards out. The Bears put the game away later with two more rushing touchdowns before Daoust threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Devin Schinktgen to close out the game's scoring.

 

The Eagles will now wait for their playoff matchup against Brillion next Friday night with a date against either Amherst or Peshtigo looming.

It comes down to one game for the Packerland Conference championship when the Southern Door Eagles host the Bonduel Bears Friday night in Brussels.

 

Both teams come into the game undefeated in the Packerland Conference with the Eagles shutting out Mishicot last week 40-0 while the Bears topped Oconto 37-14. The Bears rely on their Max's to run the ball with MaxMax Sokolski rushing for 593 yards and Max Marohl rushing for 396. Their quarterbacks split duties as well with Noah Weier and Cole Anderson combining to throw about 500 yards and nine touchdowns on the season. Southern Door head coach Ryan Zuelke respects both aspects of their offense.

 

Zuelke is keen on his offense too, especially after Nick Baudhuin was able to reach the end zone five times in last week's rout.

Luxemburg-Casco and Southern Door should know this weekend whether their football season is done or not.

 

High school football fans can thank the coronavirus for wiping out three rounds of playoffs this year, including the state championship games at Camp Randall Stadium in Madison. After the brackets are set on Saturday, playoff teams this year will receive a maximum of two games after being paired into four-team pods. Speaking before last week's game against Mishicot, Southern Door head coach Ryan Zuelke says the playoffs have been short details. 

 

 

With conference records being a factor in playoff eligibility and seeding, Zuelke and the Eagles look to go undefeated in Packerland Conference play when they host Bonduel Friday night. The NEW Radio Sports Network will broadcast the game on 102.1 MORE FM and on NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com
