Southern Door High School Archives for 2019-06

Southern Door baseball coach proud of great season

Southern Door baseball was young and very successful in 2019 according to the manager. Dave Neinas was very proud of his team for the way they performed going 10-8 overall and 10-6 in the Packerland Conference. That was good for a third-place finish only behind Sturgeon Bay and Peshtigo. The Eagles had two First Team All Packerland players and four on the second team. All but one of those will be back for next season. Neinas says he’s really excited about almost the whole team coming back for next year.

Neinas says he greatly appreciates the accomplishments of the two seniors from last year as well. One was Derik LeCaptain who was one of the two on the team on the First Team All-Conference.

Eagle Gymnasium to get new scoreboard

Eagle Gymnasium will get an upgrade unlike any other in the region in the near future thanks to new venture announced by athletic director Korey Mallien last week.

Southern Door School District is looking for sponsors to upgrade its current scoreboard with one with a video board. The video board would give students a 21st-century learning opportunity by allowing them to work with the A/V equipment necessary to produce a game.

Culver's Door County Student-Athlete of the Week: Southern Door's Lexi Wery

According to Southern Door softball coach Courtney Renard, Lexi Wery’s work to start the state semifinal game last Friday at Goodman Diamond in Madison began in the offseason. Wery worked hard to get stronger and work on her location prior to this year’s campaign. In the playoffs, she shut out two teams before giving up three runs (one earned) in Friday’s 3-0 loss to Campbellsport in the state semifinal game. Playing softball since she was eight years old, the state semifinal was the culmination of a lifetime of memories with many of her teammates. Speaking before the state tournament, Wery reflected on her favorite thing about softball.

Wery will have more opportunities to make memories in Madison this fall when she attends the University of Wisconsin to study molecular biology where she hopes to begin a career in cancer research.

Tehya Bertrand wins Packerland Outstanding Achievement Award

Tehya Bertrand was outstanding for Southern Door on the field and in the classroom. She was awarded with a Packerland Outstanding Achievement Award. Southern Door Softball falls short in state semi-final

The Southern Door Eagles Softball Team saw their season end Friday at Goodman Diamond on the campus of the University of Wisconsin Madison, on 102.1 Fm WRKU. Playing in the WIAA Division 3 state semi-final, the Eagles could not break through against Campbellsport pitcher Alyssa Muench in a 3-0 shutout.

Muench struck out 12 Eagles batter to earn the win. Her control was spot on all game. Muench did not walk a single batter and only allowed three hits to lead the Cougars.

Lexi Wery allowed just one earned run and struck out three. Wery pitched her best ball of the day in innings two through six.

The Eagles and second-year varsity coach Courtney Renard ended the season (21-4) and had an incredible postseason run.

Eagles stick to routine before state softball tournament

Pitcher Lexi Wery graduated well over a week ago and the last day of classes for Southern Door was last Friday. That being said, do not expect a change in the routine that helped lead the Eagles to its first state appearance in close to a decade. Coach Courtney Renard will still host practices at its usual time until they head down to Madison later this week. Renard, who participated in the state tournament as a pitcher herself, says it is important to keep things as normal as possible.

The Eagles will battle Campbellsport at 10 a.m. on Friday at Goodman Field on the campus of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Southern Door State Seed

We received the #3 seed for the State Tournament. We will be playing Friday, June 7 at 10:00 am at Goodman Diamond in Madison vs the #2 seed Campbellsport.
