Eagles soar over Clippers on U102.1

A first half to forget doomed the Sturgeon Bay Clippers, and the Southern Door Eagles earned a 66-38 victory Friday night in Sturgeon Bay.

Coming into the game, if you were told the Clippers would hold Drew Daoust to half his season average points, and kept the Eagles 15 points below their team average, the 66-38 Eagle victory may be surprising.  However, when we fill in the rest of the story, the Clippers being held to just six total first half points makes the story more understandable. A Pair of 3-pointers by Ian Fruzyna and Ben Ash were all the offense the Clippers could find.  The Eagles, on the other hand, spread their first half offense spread across six players.  Caden Pierre had 10 in the first half, and Daoust would add six.

The second half of the game was much more balanced, with a score of 35-32 in favor of Southern Door. The Clippers' leading scorer, Ian Fruzyna, who ended his night with 10 points, went 5-6 from the free-throw line in the second half. Jackson Star and Ben Ash added nine points apiece, including Starr, who was 4-4 from the stripe.

Nine different Eagles would find their way into the scoring column on the night. The top three scorers, however, were the usual suspects. Drew Daoust and Caden Pierre each had 16 points, just ahead of Lauden Berg and his 14 points. Daoust and Berg each scored all their points from two-point range, and Caden Pierre hit four from behind the arc.

Sturgeon Bay's next game is a home matchup against Green Bay East on Saturday, December 28th, while Southern Door's next matchup is on Friday, December 27th, when they will host Mosinee.

Peshtigo took first place, followed by Crivitz/Wausaukee and Coleman Varsity Reserves.
Southern Door's Clark LeFevre won over Reezen Owens of Coleman in the 126-pound category with a fall.

Clark also won by a 15-3 decision in his match against Eli Camps of Peshtigo before falling to AJ Kaufman of Crivitz/Wausaukee in the third match.

Alexander pinned Peshtigo's Jack Hurley and Kallen Betka of Crivitz/Wausaukee in his two other matches.

On the season, the Eagles are winless in duals this season, losing to Two Rivers and Denmark on December 5th and falling to Crandon, De Pere, Stratford, Wittenberg-Birnamwood, and Wausau East two days later.

In addition to the host Wolverines, the Eagles will face state-power Coleman and Peshtigo. Weigh-ins are set for 5 p.m. followed by the first matches at 6 p.m.

Eagles boys can't hold off Thunder in second half

On Monday night, a tied game at halftime turned into a 10-point loss for Southern Door as the Eagles lost to Seymour at home 76-66.

The Thunder's Brett Paltzer scored 14 points and the Eagles' Lauden Berg scored 13 points in the opening frame that ended with the teams tied at 31 apiece. In the second half, the Thunder's Isaac Feske led the comeback with 12 points after scoring just two in the first half. Four other Thunder players scored at least six points in the half to hold off the Eagles' threat, specifically from Drew Daoust. He scored 25 of his game-high 36 points in the second half, but it was not enough to over take the Thunder. For the Eagles, Berg had 18 points while two other players had at least five points. The Thunder had five players score at least nine points, led by Paltzer's 22 points.

Eagles boys open week at home vs. Thunder

The Southern Door boys basketball team kicks off their week on Monday with a home non-conference matchup against Seymour.

The Eagles have opened the year 3-0, averaging over 30 points a game thanks to Daoust averaging 30 points, Berg 23, and Pierre 15 in the early going.

The Thunder suffered its first loss of the season on Friday, falling to Menasha 74-68. Thanks to Kyler Marks averaging 20 points and 10 rebounds a game, the Thunder had posted four-straight wins by double digits before falling to the Blue Jays.

Eagles Fight off Pioneers 80-66 on U102.1

If the rest of the season goes anything like Tuesday's game between the Pioneers and Eagles did, fans are in for treats. The score at halftime was 50-31, but the Pioneers came out strong constantly grabbing momentum and cutting into the Eagle lead.  Southern Door showed why they are the two time Packerland conference champions, answering each Pioneer push, and holding on for victory.

Drew Daoust led all scorers with 29, followed closely by Lauden Berg with 26 and Caden Pierre with 23.  Several of those point came form the free throw line, where the Eagles shot 18 for 22.

The Pioneers were led by Damien Lardinois' 16 and Bo Tanck's 14.  11 of Bo Tanck's points came in the second half. Three other Pioneers were within one bucket of double digits including Logan Schuh, Reid Kacmarynski, and Lucas Delsart.

Southern Door's next game is a home game against Seymor.  Sevastopol's next game is a road matchup in Sturgeon Bay Friday night, which will be broadcast on U102.1. Tipoff for both games are scheduled for 7:00pm.

Eagles Soar over Spartans on 104.1 WRLU

The Luxemburg-Casco Spartans could not overcome Southern Door's 19-0 run to start the game, falling to the Eagles 90-41 on the road.

The Spartans struggled to hit shots and break the Eagle’s half-court pressure and were held scoreless for over the first six minutes of the game.  Southern Door never looked back and went into intermission with a commanding 60-18 lead.

Drew Daoust poured in a game-high 28 points and hit four three-pointers to lead the Eagle attack. Lauden Berg tallied 24 points with most coming in the paint on nifty moves around the basket.   Tyler Neinas and Caden Pierre added 13 points each as Southern Door (1-0, 2-0 overall) controlled the game from start to finish.

Luxemburg-Casco was led by Eli Derenne and James Glampe, who scored eight points apiece, while Landon Derenne and Josh Parins contributed six each.

Eagles boys fly past Bulldogs

The Southern Door boys basketball team was in cruise control against Peshtigo in an 88-59 victory.

A big reason why once again was Drew Daoust, who paced the Eagles with 33 points for the game, including 16 in the first half to give the team a 41-29 lead at the break. Daoust is certainly alone in the scoring column, with three others also reaching double figures in the game. Lauden Berg scored 17 points, Tyler Neinas chipped in 14 points, and Caden Pierre added 12 thanks to three three-pointers in the win. Dominik Baxter did his best to keep the Bulldogs in it, drilling five three-pointers en route to a 25-point night in the loss.

Eagles fall in holiday tournament finale

The Southern Door girls' basketball team dropped to 0-3 on the young season on Saturday, losing the third-place game in the Denmark Holiday Tournament to Two Rivers 65-30.

What was an eight-point game at the break ballooned to a much larger advantage for the Raiders, which outscored the Eagles 40-13 in the second half.  The Raiders had three players reach double figures, including Vayda Sonnenberg's 18 points.
