Daoust, Eagles fly by Spartans

On Tuesday night, the Southern Door Eagles pulled away for an 82-48 road victory over their former Packerland Conference rival.  Drew Daoust led with 37 points, and Southern Door took a 49-16 halftime lead and never looked back.

Luxemburg-Casco got eight points each from Braden Schley, Mason Trimberger and James Glampe.

The Eagles converted on 10 of 13 free throws, as the Spartans struggled from the charity stripe, going 7 for 18.

Southern Door (10-0, 14-4 overall)  will get some time off, as they will not play until Monday night at home against Packerland Conference rival Sturgeon Bay.

Luxemburg-Casco (2-11, 2-15 overall)  will look to return to the winning track when they travel to Denmark on Thursday in a NEC game.

DCU United takes 14th at Small School State

The fierce squad of four from Door County United Boys Swimming brought in 66 points on Saturday to place 14th of 20 at Small School State in Shorewood.

The boys proved they were ready for the quickly approaching end of the season and for the upcoming taper as the meet showed off the strengths and assets the team has as a whole. With the entire conference at the meet yesterday, it also gave a good snapshot of what next weekend will look like at the Conference Championships.

  • In the 100 Free, Filar swam a season best of 52.96 to place 15th and bring in 2 points. Atwell had a great swim and brought in a season best time of 57.93 at 29th place.

Eagles boys blitz Wolverines, visit Pioneers Saturday

The Southern Door boys' basketball team will go for two wins in as many days on Saturday after beating Crivitz on Friday night 66-54.

The Eagles' big first half helped them weather a poor second half where they were outscored 37-16. They outscored the Wolverines 50-17 in the first half thanks in part to five three-pointers from Caden Pierre. He was the second-leading scorer behind Drew Daoust, who scored 21 of his game-high 33 points in the first half. Kade Thoma led the comeback for the Wolverines, scoring 13 of his team-high 20 points in the second half. Jackson Flowers added 12 points and Tegan Flowers chipped in 11 points in the loss for the Wolverines.

The Eagles will now play at Sevastopol on Saturday, who are fresh off a 92-37 win in Institute over Stockbridge.  Frankie deYoung had a triple-double to lead the way for the Pioneers with 11 points, 11 rebounds, and 10 assists. Lucas Delsart scored 16 points, and Logan Schuh added 14 points as the Pioneers scored five players in double figures. Gametime is set for 2 p.m.

Eagles wrestlers capture road win at Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol

Tonight, our conference wrestling dual season wrapped up.  SD wrestled Sturgeon Bay Sevastopol at Sevastopol.  The gym was full and very loud, as it always is in Sevastopol.  It's a great way to end the conference schedule.  We expected a tight match and that's exactly what we got.

The night started out with what might have been our first conference girls' dual. Both SBS and SD had two girls in the same weight class.  First up were Attyson Wilson and Lane Brauer.  This was a close match, with the lead changing back and forth for the first two periods.  Attyson had a choice in the third period with the score tied and chose bottom.  Attyson had earned two reversals earlier in the match, but this time, unfortunately, she couldn't get out from Lane's half-nelson and was pinned at 4:41.  Next up was Hailey Veeser and Tiani LeMieux.  Both girls are currently ranked in the state.  Tiani got the better of Hailey at the Southern Door Girls Tournament but this past weekend at the Wausau Challenge Series Hailey finished higher, although the two did not meet head to head.  The match started with Tiani scoring a quick takedown.  Then as Hailey was getting to her feet Tiani caught her in a throw and put Hailey on her back.  But, Hailey's a fighter and didn't give up and eventually earned a reversal and caught Tiani on her back. Hailey pressured hard and earned the pin at 1:59 to beat the buzzer.  Both matches were out-of-your-seats exciting with the teams splitting pins for a team tie.  Hopefully, girls' wrestling will continue to grow, and we will be having more duals in the coming years.

165 Lane Brauer SBS won by fall over Attyson Wilson SD 4:41
145 Hailey Veeser SD won by fall over Tianni LeMeiux 1:59
SD 6 and SBS 6

The boys' dual started tonight at 150 lbs.  After two pins by the Veesers for Southern Door, we gave up 3 pins giving the lead back to SBS.  Thomas Jackson got us back close with a hard-fought 6-2 decision.  After losing a pin at 285 we traded forfeits, putting Southern Door in the lead for good.  The night ended with a win for each team.  Disappointed that we lost five of the contested matches, but we didn't line up well in the upper weights.  The guys that did lose gave it their best effort against some tough opponents.  For the boys, Thomas Jackson had the most exciting match of the evening.   Even though he controlled most of the match he couldn't get much offense going.  His low single takedowns were the difference.

150 Lance Veeser SD won by fall over Eli Bell SBS 1:34
157 Trevin Veeser SD won by fall over Justin Gutierrez SBS 4:52
165 Ethan DeNamur won by fall over Joe McDonald SD 1:43
175 Julian Langer SBS won by fall over Jackson Wagner SD 1:07
190 Zach Wrobel SBS won by fall over Jonathan Alas SD 1:32
215 Thomas Jackson SD won by decision over Alex Andrea SBS 6-2
285 Seth Laughlin SBS won by fall over Josh Nachtwey SD 0:39
106 Nate Hasenjager SBS won by FFT
113 Delaney Wilke SD won by FFT
120 Lukas Kallen SD won by FFT
126 Ashly Larsen SD won by FFT
132 Mason Motquin SD won by FFT
138 Spencer Slezewski SD won by fall over Nathan Sansom SBS 3:01
144 Spencer Madsen SBS won by major decision over Trevor Englebert SD 15-1

With the win tonight, Southern Door finished third in the conference and SBS fourth. Peshtigo easily beat Kewaunee tonight 57-21 to claim the conference title, and Kewaunee finished second.  We were within a match with both Peshtigo and Kewaunee this year but fell just short to both teams.  Full strength, I feel we could have beaten both teams, but we just don't have the depth to overcome the injuries we suffered along the way.

Next up for the girls is a tournament tomorrow night at Shawano.  This is our first trip to this tournament, but it looks to be good competition.  The boys will be at Sturgeon Bay for the Dirk Sorenson Invite on Saturday.  There should be full brackets this year, as many of the teams have full or nearly complete rosters.  For the boys, we'll look to finish strong as this will be the last varsity matches of the season.  Next week we'll look to rest and recover before getting back on the mat and making a push to the postseason.  The girls will have one more tournament next weekend but then will have a week off before heading straight to sectionals.

Southern Door wrestler to attend West Point

Southern Door senior wrestler Thomas Jackson will see his goals realized this fall when he attends the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York this fall. The school district shared the good news Thursday morning that U.S. Rep. Mike Gallagher nominated Jackson and that he had accepted an offer to attend West Point, one of the four primary U.S. Military Service academies. Rep. Gallagher says Jackson’s quick acceptance to West Point demonstrates his achievements thus far. “I have no doubt Thomas will make Northeast Wisconsin proud as he embarks on this incredible opportunity and commits to serving our country,” said Gallagher. His last nomination was Stella Kersebet, who was from Gibraltar and was selected to attend the Air Force Academy in 2021.

While balancing a rigorous course load that included AP and other advanced courses, Jackson taught Sunday School and participated in four sports and the Youth in Government program. He also recently earned his Eagle Scout award, the highest rank in Scouts USA. You can county his wrestling coach, Jerry Englebert, among those who are very proud of what he has accomplished and the leader he has become.

Only one in ten students who apply to West Point is admitted. Jackson will participate in his final dual meet when the Eagles travel to Institute to face Sturgeon Bay/Sevastopol at 7 p.m. He will also be celebrated during an assembly at Southern Door High School at 10:30 p.m. where Gallagher will be present.

Eagles muzzle Bulldogs

The Southern Door Eagles remained undefeated in the Packerland Conference with an 81-43 rout of the Peshtigo Bulldogs on Tuesday night in Brussels.

Drew Daoust was held under his season average but still poured in 24 points, while Matthew Malvitz dropped in 21 to lead the Eagles.

The Eagles (9-0, 11-4 overall) took control with a 35-19 lead at intermission and outscored Peshtigo 46 to 24 in the second half to come away with the easy win.

Southern Door travels to Crivitz on Thursday to face the Wolverines in a non-conference matchup.

Motquin registers 100th win at Herb Tyler Tournament

A career achievement by a Southern Door wrestler highlighted a day of tournament action.

Eagles boys continue to dominate Packerland with win vs. Oconto

The Southern Door Eagles boys' basketball team knocked off two top-tier Packerland opponents in consecutive games, beating Oconto on Saturday 71-44.

The Eagles jumped out to a 40-16 lead at the break and were never threatened by the Blue Devils. Drew Daoust scored 26 points on the day, with great complementary performances from Caden Pierre (12 pts) and Matthew Malvitz (10 pts). Three others scored at least four points. Cooper Campsure was the only Blue Devils player to crack double figures on the day with 18 points. Carter Koch was held to just seven points in the loss for the Blue Devils.

Daoust leads Eagles through Storm in overtime

The Southern Door boys' basketball team took sole possession of first place in the Packerland Conference with a 79-67 overtime win over Kewaunee thanks to 41 points from Drew Daoust, including 14 points in the extra frame.

The game met its billing as it was tied at 31 at the break and at 64 at the end of regulation, leading to the Eagles to lean on its star player. Daoust's stat line was impressive, as his 41 points included no three-pointers and a 19-19 day from the free throw line. The Eagles also received help from Matthew Malvitz's 12 points and 11 points each from Caden Pierre and Tyler Neinas.

The Storm countered with Thomas Stangel's 23 points, Connor Kilgore's 21 points, and Braxton Riha's 12 points.

Saturday's schedule will have Southern Door playing Oconto at home (2 p.m.), and Kewaunee heading to Algoma for a 104.1 WRLU broadcast at 2 p.m. (1:45 p.m. pregame with Paul Schmitt and Eric Fischer on the call).

DCU swimmers win three races

The Door County United swimming team had another solid night at the pool during an away meet at Kiel on Thursday.

There were nine new high school best times or splits, a bit remarkable for this point in the season. The boys claimed third tonight with a total of 68 points. There were three outright first-place wins tonight, three second-place finishes, and two thirds. It's not too shabby for a meet's 11 varsity swimming events.

Here are the highlights:

  • A 3rd place finish in the 200 Medley Relay (Luke Filar, Jack Monfils, George Atwell, Logan Filar) with a time of 1:54.02 during which Monfils swam his fastest 50 Breast split of high school with a 28.10.

  • Atwell swam a super consistent and solid 500 Free taking 4th at a time of 6:13.08, a full 12 seconds faster than any other time this season.
  • The 200 Free Relay (Logan Filar, Luke Filar, Linnan, Monfils) claimed an easy 1st place victory with a time of 1:36.90, the season's best time (and only .16 off the 16th place state qualifying time from last year). In the relay, Luke Filar swam his fastest relay split of the season at 25.05, and Linnan swam his fastest high school 50 split at 24.24, and Monfils swam his fastest high school 50 split at 23.07.

Daoust eclipses 50 as Eagles beat Denmark on U-102.1

Drew Daoust and his second 50-point scoring total on the year carried the Southern Door Eagles back from a nine-point deficit in the second half to defeat the Denmark Vikings 83-78 on U-102.1 and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com.

The Eagles and Vikings have not been strangers to close games over the past few years, including the Vikings eliminating the Eagles from the playoffs a few years back. Drew Daoust led the Eagles off early from the jump, while multiple scorers led Denmark.

Denmark had Drake Derricks, Jack Dewar, and Brayden Jeanquart impact the first half, with Derricks leading the way with 10 points at the half. The Vikings came into the game with a 4-5 overall record while 3-4 in the North Eastern Conference. The Eagles and Vikings were all tied up at 47-47 when they entered the half, with Daoust leading the way with 22 points.

Even with the Vikings honing in on the star Junior guard, Daoust had maybe his best half of basketball this season. He splashed three three-pointers and went 11 of 12 from the free-throw line to total 28 points in the second half, giving him 50 on the night.

After battling back from a nine-point deficit, Caden Pierre splashed a few key three-pointers, and late steals from Daoust would lock this one up for the Eagles, a critical win before another tough Packerland Conference stretch.

Southern Door boys open week at Denmark on U-102.1

After ending the work week with a conference win, the Southern Door Eagles boys' basketball team will try to start another one with a non-conference matchup against Denmark on Monday.

Gibraltar tried to control Drew Daoust, but he got his teammates involved in the Eagles' 66-45 win on Friday night. Daoust registered 27 points, Mathew Malvitz controlled the paint and added 13 points, and Tyler Neinas chipped in 11 points. The Eagles have now won four of their last five games.

The Vikings have split their first nine games with a 4-5 mark. They have won three of their last four games, including a 67-66 nailbiting win against Marinette in their last game to avoid a two-game losing streak. Jack Dewar and Sean Malay are averaging more than 11 points a game.

Eric Fischer and Reece Robillard will have the call on U-102.1 and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com beginning at 6:45 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the tip-off at 7 p.m.

Today, our team competed at the Rocket Scramble at Cedar Grove Belgium. As a team, we placed 4th out of the 15 teams competing. We came in short-handed again, filling only 9 of 14 weight classes, so I felt we wrestled very well. We were much improved since our Holiday tournament at Oshkosh. We seem to have taken a big step toward fixing some technique issues. More importantly, I think the "urgency" needed to be a top wrestler is starting to show as we get into the heart of our season.

The top finishers today were Mason Motquin and Trevor Englebert, who both finished 5-0 on the day in first place. Mason started the day as the three seed, and Trevor as the two seed. Mason avenged a loss from last year with an impressive 12-4 major decision over Jace Nicklaus from Brillion. He followed that with a pin and an 8-2 decision in his final match. He started strong in each match and was in control from start to finish. Trevor started with a tech fall and followed that with three straight pins. We would have liked to work some technique and extend matches, but knowing he wasn't feeling well, we decided it best to end matches when he could. Trevin Veeser also made the gold bracket and finished in third. Trevin was 3-2 on the day and had some great matches to learn from. We were looking to work more offense.

Nora LeFevre, Spencer Slezewski, Lance Veeser, and Colton Krueger were all 4-1 on the day and placed fifth. Each lost their second match, putting them in the silver bracket, but then won three straight for fifth. Colton Krueger finished with three pins in a row, and Nora with two (and a bye).

Next up is another triple dual on Tuesday at Crivitz, along with Florence and Peshtigo. This dual with Peshtigo will not be for the conference but will certainly give us an idea for our conference dual, not the 18th. We'll likely be short-handed again on Tuesday but hope to be back to full strength in the next couple of weeks.

Viking Gameplan Not Enough to Steal Victory From Eagles

The Vikings' game plan was to force someone other than Drew Daoust to be the one to beat them.  That battle would go the way of the Vikings as they held Daoust to just 27 points, which was 7 shy of his 34.6 points per game average.  Gibraltar jumped out to a very early lead thanks to the hot hand of Liam Lindenberg who hit the first of his six 3-pointers on the opening possession in Fish Creek on Friday night.  Joining Liam Lindenberg in the scoring column for the Vikings was Braden Sitte who would match Liam's 18 points on the night.  The Eagles however won the larger battle and had several other players step up, leading Southern Door to the road victory. Mathew Malvitz controlled the paint and added 13 points, and Tyler Neinas who added 11, which was more than 3 times his average ppg.  James Fish would add 8 points, and Lauden Berg would add 6 as the visiting Eagles took the victory by a score of 66-45.  Each team heads on the road for their next matchups as Gibraltar travels to Menominee on Tuesday, and the Eagles travel to Denmark on Monday night. You will be able to listen to the Southern Door Eagles game on Monday night on U102.1 and the New Radio Sports Network.

The Eagles lost to Packerland Conference foe 39-33, local rival Luxemburg-Casco 64-15, and Little Chute 39-37. Trevin Veeser had the best night of any wrestler for the Eagles, going 3-0 while wrestling in two different weight classes on the night.

Southern Door boys soar to Gibraltar on U-102.1 Friday

The Southern Door Eagles resume conference play on Friday night when they visit Fish Creek to battle Gibraltar.

The Eagles split their games last weekend at the Preble Holiday Tournament, beating Milwaukee Washington 71-49 before falling to Mosinee 87-82. With Indians leading 39-32 at the break thanks to each team's role players, the stars came to shine in the second half. Drew Daoust scored 28 of his game-high 45 points to pace the Eagles. He was countered by the Indians' Keagan Jirschele, who tallied 36 points on the evening, 28 of which came after the break. Lauden Berg (13 points) and Matthew Malvitz (10 pts) added 23 points combined in the loss.

The Vikings are coming off a loss of their own on Tuesday, falling to Two Rivers 59-44 on the road. Braden Sitte led all Vikings players with 15 points, while Liam Lindenberg joined Maltby with a nine-point evening thanks to a trio of three-pointers. The loss snapped a two-game streak for the Vikings, including their first conference win of the season against Sevastopol. Head coach Travis Ward offered high praise for the Eagles during his post-game comments.

Jacob Nate and Reece Robillard will have the call on U-102.1 and NEWRadioSportsNetwork.com beginning at 7:15 p.m. with the pregame show followed by the opening tip at 7:30 p.m.

Coach lauds short-handed Eagles at two tough tournaments

This week some of our wrestlers were competing in two different tournaments.  With the holidays, family commitments, and some illness, we were short-handed at both tournaments but had a great experience at two very tough tournaments.

Our boys were at the Oshkosh on The Water classic in Oshkosh, with over 70 teams. It's an accomplishment to be still competing on the second day of the tournament.  This year, Trevor Englebert was 4-1 and Hayden Jeanquart went 3-1 to advance to the second day.  Mason Motquin missed losing a 3-1 decision in his last match.

On day two, both Trevor and Hayden lost hard-fought matches.  Trevor couldn't get any offense going in his 4-0 loss.  Hayden was also in a close match when he sprained his foot late in the third period and was forced to default.

Our girls were at the Bi-State tournament in LaCrosse.  Nora and Hailey advanced to the second day, with Nora going for fifth and Hailey in the finals.  On day two, Nora earned a fall and fifth-place finish.  Hailey had a tough match against Skenadore from Pulaski and finished in second.  Neither of the girls was satisfied with the places, but nice for them to make the podium.

Next week will be a busy week when we get back on Tuesday.  We have a triple dual Thursday at Little Chute with Luxemburg and Kewaunee.  The varsity boys will be at the Rocket Scramble in Cedar Grove on Saturday.  The girls and JV will be at the Neenah Qualifier.

Thanks

Jerry Englebert
