The Door County United swim team returns to action on Saturday when they swim at the Jaguar Classic hosted by Ashwaubenon.

In their last meet, DCU put up a good fight against  Wittenberg-Birnamwood High School on Thursday, September 3rd. Wittenberg-Birnamwood scored 87 points, and DCU scored 68 points. Highlights of the night included freshman Ashlyn Sixel (SDHS) placing first in the 200-yard freestyle, scoring six points for the team. She was aided by Quinn Sperber (SDHS), who later placed first in the 100-yard backstroke, scoring six more points for the team. DCU also placed first in the 200-yard Freestyle Relay, consisting of Sperber (SDHS), Rachel Rock (SEV), Jillian Peterson (SDHS), and Sixel (SDHS) placed first, adding eight points to the overall score.

The first events begin on Saturday at noon at Ashwaubenon High School.

For the second week in a row, the Peshtigo Bulldogs shut out a Door County team as they handled the Southern Door Eagles 26-0 on Friday night during the Eagle's homecoming football game. 

The Eagles fell behind early, allowing Bulldog running-back Cody Nesberg to escape on a 64-yard touchdown run on just the second offensive play of the game.  The Eagles would block the extra point try, resulting in a 6-0 score.  The Eagles would quickly go three and out, and on the next drive, Zac Schonfeld would rush an 18-yard touchdown to put the Eagles down 12-0 after a failed 2-point try.

The second quarter did not go well for the Eagles either.  Quarterback Caleb Delwich would be knocked out the game with and injury and the Bulldogs would add another touchdown when Zac Schonfeld would block a Kody Wagaman punt, scoping and scoring a touchdown all by himself.  A successful 2 point try put the game at the 20-0 halftime score.  One shining moment in the half for the Eagles would be an interception by William Price, but even that came with a grey cloud hanging over it as almost half of his return was wiped out by a block in the back penalty.  Freshman Quarterback Beau Schley would lead the Eagles the rest of the game at QB.

Neither team could muster much offense in the 3rd quarter.  The Eagles would open the 4th quarter on defense successfully stopping Peshtigo on a 4th down, but could not do much with the ball offensively.  The Eagles gave up a 15-yard TD run to Schonfeld to close out the scoring and the final 26-0 score.

The Eagles hit the road next week to face the Oconto Blue Devils on Friday the 18th at 7:00. 

Southern Door's Malania Veeser battled the heat and a tough field to win the Chilton Tiger Invite on Thursday.

Veeser won the 5K girls' race with a time of 20:10, just under two minutes ahead of second-place finisher Greta Martens of NEWCHAA. The Eagles were edged in the team standings by the host Tigers 25-30. On the boys' side, Colton Valley and Joel Moyer each broke 20 minutes to crack the Top 15.

Fresh off a win earlier this week, the Southern Door volleyball team re-enters Packerland Conference play with a match at Oconto on Thursday.

The Eagles cruised to another victory on Tuesday night, this time a 3-0 sweep over Coleman in non-conference play 25-14, 25-14, and 25-15. The Eagles were paced by Chloe Haberli (9 kills) and Maiya Olson (10 kills), leading the way in kills, while Harper Kramer had 21 assists.

The Blue Devils have opened the season with a 5-1 record, including a close 3-2 victory over Sturgeon Bay last week.

First serve is at 7 p.m.

The Southern Door and Kewaunee cross country teams head to Chilton for an invitational on Thursday.

Both teams traveled to the campus of UW-Green Bay last Thursday for the James Boyd Invitational Cross Country Meet hosted by De Pere. Malania Veeser led the Eagles girls with a fourth-place finish and a time of 20:21. Amber Geisel, Savannah Herbst, and Evelynne Jeanquart achieved personal bests on the 5K course. For the boys, Colton Valley led the Eagles with top 50 performance and sub-20 5K time. The Storm's Natalie Miller led the way on the girls' side with a 10th-place finish and a time of 23:02. Gage Vlies cracked the Top 40 for the boys with a time of 21:36. 

Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah, Hilbert, Chilton, NEWCHAA, New London, Wrightstown, and Chesterton Academy will also compete in the invite beginning at 4 p.m.

The Eagles won a five-set match last Thursday against Peshtigo 3-2 (25-23,25-22,20-25,18-25,15-5). After capturing the first two sets, the Eagles had swung the match back in their favor in the fifth after dropping the third and fourth sets. 

The Cougars broke an 0-11 start to their season last Thursday with a three-set sweep win against Gillett. Prior to that, they had only captured two sets total.

First serve is set for 7 p.m.

Southern Door's home opener for volleyball sent the locals home happy, winning a five-set match against Peshtigo 3-2 (25-23,25-22,20-25,18-25,15-5).

The Southern Door football team heads out to Marinette on Friday night to search for its first win of the season.

The Eagles lost to the Shiocton Chiefs 34-13 in their last game. Caleb Delwiche was harassed by the Chiefs' defense, going 6/18 for 45 yards and two interceptions, and was limited to -15 yards rushing and a touchdown. Raymond Paye provided a bright spot for the Eagles, rushing for 101 yards and a score in the loss. Lance Veeser led the Eagles defensively with 10 solo tackles.

After starting the season with a 34-22 win over Two Rivers in their season opener, the Marines were humbled by their cross-border rivals in Menominee, Michigan, losing to the Maroons 60-6. 

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Former Southern Door, Notre Dame, and NFL football player Jim Flanigan will be among those honored as part of the festivities surrounding the Wisconsin-Notre Dame game at Lambeau Field in September.

The 2016 Southern Door Alumni Hall of Fame member will receive the Determination Award for his perseverance on and off the football field as part of the Knute Rockne Memorial Society Spirit of Sports Awards in Green Bay on Sept. 5.

Before earning honorable mention All-American honors at Notre Dame and beginning a 10-year NFL career that included one season with the Green Bay Packers, Flanigan starred for the Eagles. He led the team with 215 rushing yards and had a hand in all three touchdowns in a 17-7 state championship victory over Westby in 1989.

Knute Rockne Memorial Society Executive Director and Notre Dame football historian Jim Lefebvre says Flanigan's experience served him well in South Bend.

The Knute Rockne Memorial Society Spirit of Sports Awards are part of a larger weekend celebrating Notre Dame football in Green Bay, including a history night on Sept. 3 in Green Bay and a golf event in Menasha on Sept. 4. Door County Baseball League scribe Herb Gould will be one of the three authors featured at the history night on Sept. 3. He will be discussing his book "Lambeau: The Epic Life of Earl
Louis "Curly" Lambeau, the Man Who Invented the Green Bay Packers." Lambeau
