Southern Door, Sevastopol volleyball battle Monday

The Southern Door Eagles volleyball is looking to celebrate its senior night on a high note when it hosts Sevastopol in the lone Packerland Conference match Monday night.

The Eagles have split their last four matches after starting the season 3-0. That includes a sweep of Green Bay East its last time out and a 26-18, 25-11, 25-11 loss to the Pioneers one week ago. The Pioneers have won seven of its nine matches this season, including the last three in a row.

Opening serve is set for 7 p.m. in Brussels.

Volleyball: Southern Door rolls in non-conference win

Southern Door built momentum in a tune-up game against Green Bay East and won in three sets. Coming off Monday’s lopsided loss against Sevastopol, the Eagles were ready to go from the opening serve. Southern Door would take the first set 25-16. In the second set, the Eagles would win 25-15. The Eagles would slam the door shut in the third and final set, 25-12. This was the first of four straight home matches for Southern Door.

The victory moves the Eagles to 5-2 this season and sets up a rematch with Sevastopol on Monday, who is 9-2 this Spring. Southern Door will be looking to avenge their March 22 loss in the first matchup between the two, when they were swept. Start time for Monday’s game is 7:00 PM.

Up and down Eagles host non-conference match

The Southern Door Volleyball team has alternated between winning and losing the last four games and will try to continue the trend when they face Green Bay East on Thursday. The Eagles are coming off a loss to the Sevastopol Pioneers. Before rematching with them however, Southern Door will have to warm up against a Green Bay East team who has faced familiar opponents. East is still looking for their first win and have losses against Sturgeon Bay, Ashwaubenon, and Clintonville.

The match at Southern Door High School is set for 2:00 PM.

Daoust named All-Star

With last basketball season having been in doubt at times, programs are thankful to have got a season in at all. But at Southern Door they have extra to be thankful for. On top of being the class of the Packerland Conference for the last several years in boys hoops, the Eagles will have a representative in 2021’s WBCA All-Star game on July 15th.

Alex Daoust, a senior who averaged 19.6 points per game last season and shot 55% from the field, will be taking the court one last time in his preps career for the game. When Daoust entered the high school’s program as a Freshman, he didn’t expect to be selected as an All-Star. Now heading to the Summer game, he notes that while the Packerland conference does have good competition, the level at the WBCA game will elevate.

The senior knows it wasn’t easy to get to this point, and said it is awesome to see the off-season work pay off. Daoust had a special 20-21 season, but also takes pride in the special program he’s part of. He called being part of the Eagles program an awesome experience, and mentioned the rarity of their seven year run as Packerland Conference Champions. The all-star also shows gratitude for the family atmosphere that Southern Door Basketball has created.

His coach, Josh VandenBush also recognized the hard work that comes with the selection. VandenBush also alluded to the grooming process at Southern Door, recognizing that Daoust had to wait his turn. Though the head coach knew Daoust prepared for when his name was called on.

Soon transitioning to life after high school,  Daoust isn’t set on what path he will take. His top two options include extending his Basketball career at Lakeland University. He isn’t sure what he would study there yet, but if he chooses not to be a Muskie, his other option is to attend Northeast Wisconsin Technical College to go into a trade such as gas utilities.

Englebert finishes national wrestling meet as runner-up

For the second time in a month, Southern Door wrestler Grant Englebert finished on the second step of the podium.

Englebert took second place at the Corn Cob Nationals in Des Moines, IA on Saturday in the Boys 15 - 18 Years Old - 163-pound division. He picked up a pair of pins over the weekend, including one in the semifinals over Lucas Wendling in the semi-finals to clinch the championship match berth. He would later fall to William Penn University's Cameron Hargrove 5-2.

Englebert took second place in last month's WIAA Division 3 State Tournament and later committed to wrestling at UW-LaCrosse.

Shimon set on St. Thomas

Southern Door High School senior Hailey Shimon put pen to paper on Wednesday as she signed to continue her Track and Field career at St. Thomas University in the twin cities. Shimon has had a decorated career for the Eagles after giving the sport a try as a freshman. Shimon has placed as high as second in the Packerland conference for discus. Shimon has mentioned that the Tommies have thought about trying her out at the hammer-throw and/or weight throw as well. Shimon relishes the opportunity to be a Division I athlete at UST, as they are in the transition from Division III’s MIAC Conference, but it was the institution that stood out to her.

Shimon still has a Track and Field season to prepare her for the college ranks. She does have goals of defeating her own personal highs in throwing the shot and discus. Shimon also has goals of leaving a lasting impression on Southern Door’s record books.

The Senior also is a member of the Southern Door’s basketball and volleyball programs, as well as a member of the National Honor Society, with a 3.87 GPA. Shimon has aspirations of becoming a dentist and will major in Biological Sciences with a Pre-Dental track. Shimon also considered post-secondary education at Marquette University and St. Norbert College but decided crossing borders and enrolling at the prestigious St. Paul university would be the best fit.
